Matt must be a BMW driver at heart. If he's getting Lane Keeping Assist feedback as he changes lanes on the motorway it is because he didn't bother to use his indicator.

Thanks for the Corolla test. I am a long term VW/Audi customer and always dismissed Toyotas as being boring and unstylish. Well our car was written off while parked and Direct Line (excellent service) loaned us a new style Yaris hybrid, and much to our surprise we loved it - funky looks, nice high crossover style driving position, comfortable and quiet, but as you found with the Corolla, the fuel economy is almost unbelievable - high 60s edging into low 70s. The thing is so darned clever, harvesting the power usually wasted from braking or coasting downhill and giving you back miles of battery quiet travel. It is mostly used in and about London, but cruises happily on motorways in the 70s. The old Yaris looked a bit lacklustre, but the new one is everything one needs in a small car - can’t understand why you don’t see more of them! Thanks for all the entertaining videos.

I have a 2022 Corolla Altis 1.8 saloon (no hybrids were available due to the chip shortage). Over the years, I've had all sorts of cars, new and used from LandCruisers and Pajeros to BMWs and Golf GTIs. What you can say for Toyota, while not the most exciting, is that they are comfortable and have fantastic air con. The extra initial outlay will be recouped as they simply don't go wrong. I think as you get older, you start to prioritize other things in a daily driver car - relative comfort, reliability and economy. On a long run at 110kmh (70 mph ish) it uses about 4.8l/100km with 3 people and luggage on board, which I think is about 49mpg US or 58mpg UK. I have nothing to complain about with the car.

The estate version of this was on my Wife's company car list a few years ago. Nice car, a black Excel model is quite eye catching. The 2 litre has the 12 volt battery in the boot, hence the boot is smaller! Good review, I am currently toying with one to replace my Seat that is coming towards the end of its life. I also wanted to point a few things out from a Toyota Employee point of view. 1. The lane keep assist will not let you change lanes unless you use your indicator. You can turn it off when you start the car but it will turn itself back on each time you do start. Don't be a typical BMW driver and indicate ;) 2. I personally wouldn't recommend buying one as your Spain car. If you leave it sat for a week or two. The 12v battery will drain and you'll have a car that won't start. You can always charge the battery via a trickle charger but that can take anywhere between 8-12 hours to charge. Most hybrid cars aren't made to stand, they're made to be driven on a daily basis. Other than that, they are cracking cars! Look really stylish now that Toyota are attempting to appeal towards a younger audience.

My parents both owned Toyotas, a Camry and a first generation Yaris, both great cars. She is great to drive, my first automatic so the CVT gear box took little while to get used to. Great for cruising on the motorway giving me on average 55 to 58 mpg, increased to 64mpg around town. Eco mode most of the time and surprises me when EV kicks in when cruising at 70mph. I can't fault these new Corollas at all. In fact I consider Toyota above most other brands for reliability and value for money. Plus they hold their value very well. I bought a new Landcruiser last year with 10 years unlimited kilometres and fixed price servicing for the first sixty thousand. I believe Mitsubishi now offer 10 years warranty as well now. Something that was unheard of until Kia came along. Cars have really improved in leaps and bounds over the last ten years. With the lane assist I have found it to be problematic on roads where there are roadworks and they have some of the old/temporary lane markings still showing.

Sounds like another good, honest review Matt, I think your spot on about brand appeal. It's a very powerful emotion and one the German badges use to the fullest, although I do think it's possibly on the wane.
@bonzobanana12 жыл бұрын
I personally don't see the German badges as quality engineering anymore, I see them as low quality high cost cars and so their badges have no appeal to me. Japanese cars are typically made to tighter engineering tolerances and with higher quality components and that is what matters to me. I do feel cabin quality often fails Japanese cars but I guess the money is spent elsewhere and the current Mazda's actually look super stylish inside and out. The sort of people who buy German cars especially secondhand don't seem that clever to me, they seem obsessed with brands and pay through the nose to get them and put up with high cost servicing and repairs. Also the type of people who buy German marques seem to have the lowest skills on the road and the least patience. The German brands just seem to attract the worst possible people. As a cyclist you always have to be wary of German marques and white van men more than other vehicles it seems. It seems often people buy performance German cars and then get very frustrated when they are in traffic queues and are prevented from going fast, they seem the most keen to overtake at risky times and put the safety of others at risk. Just making the point that people that buy German marques can be perceived very badly by others. Of course I realise that is a terrible generalisation but I feel strongly there is a huge amount of truth to it based on my experiences and what you read in the press regarding drivers who drive recklessly and cause accidents. Even the police have a joke name for car incidents/accidents where they call it an AAA incident which basically mean's 'Another Audi Arse-ole' rather than the Automobile Association which you might think it meant. I just feel its weird how cars are perceived because most products people want quality and reliability. However I guess cars are really more about fashion and how people want to be perceived by others and perhaps German marques nowadays present a slightly more dangerous and reckless persona that many like.
@alankeyes82672 жыл бұрын
@@bonzobanana1 I strongly agree with all your points. Japanese brands do seem to just not care about the cabin styling and nicities that the German cars do. By contrast I find the German cars dull, expensive, unreliable and driven by arse holes.

Hola Matt. I might have said that 1001 times before: I am a Corolla petrol 1.6 110bhp 2003 owner for the last 10 years. The car never failed to me. Its 19 years old already. Yes it has been beaten up (city parked) and on the exterior is not the best looking car ever but on the inside it is well maintained. It has some kayaba suspension that suits it well. I am a low milleage driver. I tipically do 5K kms/year. I love cars, don't get me wrong. But it's just I don't need to drive daily. And even,I probably would drive the Corolla. Because it makes me save money to put in other things as you explain in your video. Now about the new version: I find it way too long. I hope they do a similar one with the Yaris. I found myself I like cars 4 or 4.2 meters long. Other than this it's too much for me and for Barcelona parking. I rather have the same engines in a smaller car. So definitelly yes, a Corolla would probably not fail to you. And it's a great workhorse. At least the E12 or also named E120 I believe. It's a cheap car to buy and maintain usually. And allows you to save money on the meantime. And it's kinda "fun" to drive somehow if you rev it up to 4.000rpm. As stated before: I don't need to worry about consumption. Of course, the lower the better. But it's just a few times a month that the car is driven, so.... Well, all the best!

that 10 year warranty is awesome. I bought a used 7 yo Verso 2 years ago that has been always serviced at Toyota. And I continued doing that for the sake of the resell value and it's like 200- 300 euros a year. Then the horn broke and I got a new one for free. I did not even know that.

Good review, seriously considering moving over to a hybrid before I make move over to EV in the future. I personally think that the new Corolla is a great looking car. I am looking getting a Lexus IS/GS hybrid. Anyway, keep up the great reviews, keep them coming.

Very concise review. Nice scenery for sure. Enjoyed your take on a very capable car. If fuel prices get any worse…we’ll all be driving one of these autos. Thanks again.

Probably one of the best all-around suburban and city drivers car. If you care for reliability and safety, and not appeal, then this is the car that you want.

Good review, and the Toyota / Lexus hybrids are getting better all the time. Just to point out, the relax warranty doesn’t cover everything the main 3 year one does, so have a look at the fine print. For example, it doesn’t cover the infotainment screen should it fail. Then again as you say, these are so reliable that you’re hardly going to need it, but it’s good to know it’s there to cover most stuff.

I was looking at a sporty estate version of this car a couple of months ago in a friendly Toyota dealer and thought it was a great looking car with a really nice interior.

I was sat behind one of these this morning, grey paint in GR trim. Looked pretty decent, I think I'd go for the touring model as it's way more practical 👍🏻

I’ve just bought a 20 month old excel with only 1433 miles, (yes, that’s right! 1433 - the previous owner died shortly after buying it 😢). I traded a Volvo xc60 T8 as a straight swap. The Volvo was a great car with phenomenal performance for such a big car, and all the toys so why the change? Well, the xc60 averaged just 44 mpg using the plug in every day, (36mpg when we went to France and couldn’t get an ev app that worked), nearly £600 for a service, £127 for a set of wiper blades, (yes, really - look it up!), £300 each for tyres 😮 and the seats were like sitting on a park bench, (very un-Volvo like). So far the Corolla is averaging 57mpg, no electricity to pay for, service is about half the price of the Volvo and wipers from Halfords and tyres about £120 for premium brand, (never compromise on what goes between you and the ground!). The Corolla is comfortable, quick enough for today’s traffic, fun to drive, (yes really!), and much easier to park. Okay, so the sound system is not Bowers and Wilkins and the cvt drones when you need to get a move on; I have to open and close the boot myself and no memory seats but other than that I have no complaint.

Interesting. I drove a corolla 1.8 hatch last weekend and I loved it, if I'd tried one 18 months ago I might have bought the 2.0 version instead of my Kia Proceed GT, which isn't very relaxing in comparison! However my girlfriend would like me to get a Rav 4 as it suits our outdoor lifestyle better, is yours the current shape hybrid? Oh, and I'm also a member of the MX5 crowd too, I've owned a 2 litre 2011 NC for a few years...

2.0l boot is smaller because the 12V Battery is stored there. Also the high voltage battery pack is slightly larger I believe.

Great cars these, well developed and engineered, drive way better than you think, but the Japanese cars have often done this. Great reliable alternative to the European choices. Loved the tour around sunny Malaga Matt, more of that please! 😎

About three years ago at a Toyota showroom, I sat in a Corolla not knowing it was a corolla. I thought it was an Auris. I instantly fell in love with the interior. It felt very intimate and beautifully organised. I had the first generation Prius and at about 80K the CVT turned to blancmange and Toyota wanted £1800 for a new set of lithium batteries. The body, engine and interior were like new but I had to give it to the breakers yard. What I waste. That taught me a lesson. Never buy a hybrid again. Toyota will screw you over if anything goes wrong. Eg My friend's 2nd generation Prius, they want £680 to change a front wheel bearing and a warning not to get it done by a non Toyota garage. His mechanic did it for £150.

Why do they have a 100k/10 year warranty then? And up to 15 year on the hybrid powertrain in many cases? They seem to work amazingly well for taxis, just not you.

I've always been annoyed with petrolheads but now that the prices of petrol are going through the roof I'm just glad I'm not one of them. Have fun with your V8 fuel bill. I'll be driving my Toyota hybrid with LPG, the ultimate postapo vehicle.

Excellent video review. Totally agree with the points made about the Golf, Astra, Focus & Ceed. None of those cars are reliable imo. However, does the Corolla Hybrid hold 100% of its value (within or after 3 years) or not? 🤔

Hello Matt, excellent review. saw 100’s of them in Australia when we spent a year there 2019-2020. Seems as though the hire car companies use them. We decided to get a 2.0 litre CH-R when we got back. It’s nearly two years old now and is a great car. Thank you for taking the time to upload another video. Ged

Sensible advice Matt and all the reasons I’ve bought myself a 2019 RAV4. Roomy, comfy SUV daily driver which is giving me 50+mpg Top spec low mileage one owner which, (as you said), will be under manufacturers warranty up to 100,000mls…. what’s not to like? Oh and it offsets the V8 SL500 perfectly lol 😆

Used to drive Honda and Ford, then moved to Toyota for a reliable hybrid system with rising fuel prices and daily commuting distances. The only issue I had with my new Rav4 Hybrid after one year usage is, the front collusion warning that gives me even there is no vehicle in front of me upon taking bends with bumps. On the inner road to the home, I am driving through a 50Kmh road and there is a very small bend that straight line road with 180° corner becomes 150° with around 30° degree deduction. There are vehicles which have parked roadside but this is a road that is established with future development goals, practically six lanes could be marked (3 lanes for both sides with no medians) but only one lane for each side. even those parked vehicles are far away and along the curbside while leaving another whole lane size area empty between the driving zone and the parked cars. Not sure what the exact reason is but nothing disappointed me through its specs and features except this point. This could make you a bit stressed especially when someone comes behind you very closely during busy hours...🥴 Still, planning to buy a Corolla hatchback hybrid for personal and home errands.
