Bobbi Brown's message since the beginning is that for her, makeup is just about looking your best, not changing you in any way. She's always been about natural-looking, neutral makeup. Before Estee Lauder bought the line it was much simpler. Her books are still available that she wrote in the early days expounding on this philosophy.

totally agree with you. From my understanding of Bobbi Brown motto as a makeup artist, her latest message isn't new. From day one her makeup line and the aesthetic the brand strive for has always been refinement of your own natural features. The makeup looks always leans towards earthy tones, always classy and sophisticated , not avant garde like what we see on runway shows. When i was young i have seen a video of her demonstrating how to use her makeup line where she would apply makeup on the model and remind viewers to use makeup to enhance once natural beauty. So, I would say she has not deviated from her original message.

“Gifting” a nose job to Jewish girls was a popular thing in the 70’s & 80’s (one of the many ways minorities are told to surgically remove any features that don’t fit a euro-centric idea of beauty.) Bobbi Brown is kind of a rock star for refusing it and then going into the beauty industry. Her line has always been about emphasizing natural beauty instead of blending out unique features.
@Jw4be2 жыл бұрын
Lets be realistic: nose contour was created for the stage to create shadow, when the lights eliminates shadows. It’s there for an illusion, when you’re through a specific point of view or under certain lights. It’s not meant or even useful for a regular day usage. Under sunlight, for example, you look like you have something on your face. It doesn’t look realistic. And I’ve seen good contour. But the method isn’t made for regular usage. That’s just an addition to what Bobbi said. And I trielt agree to her. And if you’re feeling compressed under the beauty standards to have your nose look the certain way: contouring it to mimic that look only manifesting that norm you have in your mind, and probably in the society. Let the nose be a nose.

I am old enough to have actually attended a makeup teach-in at Neiman Marcus by Bobbi herself. Even when she started her business the emphasis was on natural looking colors and not the blues and greens of eyeshadow and the reds and orange lipstick. But the best was the soft toned blush. Over the years the color palette may have shifted darker or lighter but it basically stayed within that natural, your own face but better philosophy. I don’t think she’s changed much at all from that original idea.

Nice! I like Bobby Browns message. Some people feel pressured to look a certain way and its nice that someone in the beauty world acknowledges self-love. Yes some people contour their nose because they feel better about themselves when they change the shape of their face with makeup, but others, especially young people, may appreciate that an icon like Bobby Brown is saying its okay not to, and to love the nose you have.

Just like Scott Barnes once said about her, & if you ever watch a Bobbi Brown makeup tutorial "we are essentially doing the same thing, just going a completely different way about it, let's not lie to ourselves here" You had Bobbi Brown Slatthering models in makeup while she was talking about a natural look... layers upon layers of product isn't exactly no makeup is it? I don’t think what Bobbi Brown said was anything odd or unusual for her or her line, at least the way the line was initially meant to be. Even five or 10 years ago she had very little to do with her line, as Estée Lauder completely took over it’s direction way before that. Bobbi was always promoting natural and neutral makeup, encouraging using as little of it as possible.

I always have such a complicated relationship when it comes to conventional beauty standards. As a WOC, my features have never and most likely will never be considered ‘beautiful’, and that’s fine. I always hesitate contouring my nose because as someone who’s Asian American, my nose and my eyes are typically what’s pointed out as ‘ugly’ or ‘undesirable’. It’s hard for me to separate wanting to contour my nose away from the fact that the reason why I want to do that in the first place is to make it look more Caucasian. There’s the part of me that’s like, ‘so what? If it makes me feel good, then great’ and another part that’s like ‘how freeing and empowering would it be if I did the internal work to unlearn that self hatred so I never feel like I SHOULD contour my nose (and specifically a feature that’s common for my race) vs masking that insecurity with makeup’. I appreciate Bobbi Brown’s take on it and from what I know, that’s all part of her makeup philosophy anyway. Also, it’s interesting that people on TikTok are giving her crap for it when the new trend in beauty is to be more ‘natural’.

I have been a gamer since the late 1980's so here was my thoughts to the OPI/XBOX collab. Women in gaming has steadily been on the rise, but I initially couldn't imagine that the collab would be financially a good avenue for either company. It's too niche. I don't see there being enough real interest. However, the moment "unlockable in-game content" was mentioned I knew that part of it was getting the male audience to purchase these things for the codes and giving the polish out as gifts. Clever and devious. There is a subset of gamer that cannot miss out on a limited edition in-game content items. Soooo they seem to marketing not just towards the obvious audience but found a hook for the non-polish wearing brethren as well. Sneaky.
@samp95812 жыл бұрын
Plus OPI already has a fan base so they would get sales from their normal customers who would possibly buy an extra bottle (you have to spend $20) to give the code to their gamer friends. And personally they did make some nice shades, so thats what I would do if I knew anyone who played.

Honestly I'm kind of with Bobbi on this for a specific reason - I see way to many people with "ethnic" noses are contouring them to make them look as thin and European as possible. This is something I struggle with a lot as a Black woman - it hurts me to see a lot of other Black women trying to erase their wide noses. But on the other hand I don't want to judge what feels good to others when it comes to makeup. But I understand what she's trying to get across, especially considering her own experience with her mom offering her a nose job. It's hard to see people constantly trying to make their noses look less like yours.

My cat scratched me on my eyeball once, and while it was painful, it was a pretty quick heal after seeing an eye doctor-but I am SUPER loathe to even consider any eye stuff 😳 I’d never put air pressure like a hairdryer near my eyeballs, and I don’t even wear contacts lmao I am part of the Xbox x OPI target demographic, and I think it’s cool, if a little out of the blue 😭👍 I’m not super interested in the shades you showed in the video, but I’d be interested in buying them for a chance to get free Halo Infinite content 😳 It’s not pay to play, but it is achievement-based, and it’s so awesome that they’re having special content for the collab!! And you’re right, I do really appreciate more feminine presentation in the gaming community 😤 Most people find it really hard to reconcile my love for makeup and fashion and “traditionally feminine things” with my love for video games, and I often feel alienated among my friends when I pursue some of my interests, but I’m glad that gaming has become a little more accepting about non-male gamers. I do feel like female streamers like Valkyrae, while she often receives lots of criticism from her peers and got lots of flak for her RFLCT launch even before things went south, have paved the way-although I wish there was a more varied spread of female gamers for young people to look up to than just the ones that mostly-male-audiences think are hot 😐 No hate, they’re just a minority of female gamers, and it’s a little alienating. I’m still a very young lady (I turn twenty in a month lol), but I’m very happy to know that the young people after me will be a part of a much more varied and encouraging audience :)

Gaming (and especially game dev) has always been a varied space, but the marketing (especially in NA) has always been more tailored to boys and men, for some reason. That's what has pushed the idea that women don't "belong" in gaming, not necessarily because they're not already there. The kinds of games that tend to be more male-heavy spaces are the ones that allow those kind of male-centric echo chambers, because most women in those spaces don't want to have their play totally halted to "debate" their right to exist in those spaces (understandably). But we've always been around, I promise you. 🥴

I am a huuge gamer and I am such a fan of the opi collaboration!!! You are totally right about "feminine" coded things rarely being allowed in gaming related products and circles. Companies like Xbox would have never been caught dead 5 years ago with anything even being the colour pink let alone officially collaborating with a nail polish brand. Even now the loudest voices in gaming are probably going to be loudly opposing the collab saying it's ruining gaming or some other nonsense. But it's a great move, makes me feel more included as a woman gamer, I even work in the gaming industry and I'm the only woman at my company of 30+ employees, the industry has a long way to go and I'm happy to see an official collab like this!!
@keyholes2 жыл бұрын
I actually really dig the OPI/xbox collab. The gaming sphere often feels like an unsafe place to openly be a woman (playing online games with voice chat, oof), so it's nice to see them breaking down traditional gender roles. I feel like male celebrities wearing nail polish is opening the door for it being more mainstream to enjoy polish regardless of gender too, and I'm really enjoying it. Long may it continue!

Marketing wise and strategically I find it genious that there is a voucher that you have to go in-store (or maybe online) and redeem a product, in this case a perfum. Bobbi Brown was never into contouring. From the conception of the company to now, her stance on beauty and the role of makeup has been the same. She hasn’t just adopted this since leaving the company. Her tagline has always been “be who you are”. To say that she “went too far” with her opinion in her short video is surprising. She expressed feeling insecure about her nose in her youth. So those who contour in every video and include it in every routine aren’t going too far? Lol. It’s just an opinion, and one she’s had forever. As someone who’s worked for Bobbi Brown, it’s cool to see her sticking to her approach and, even as a makeup artist, rejecting the idea that everyone MUST contour. It doesn’t always suit everyone. Her style as an artist has never been about trendiness in techniques but, rather, tried and true techniques that work for everyone.

I really appreciate the idea of integrating gaming culture with what is more traditionally considered "feminine" (ie, nail polish...) but that collab could be done much better. If you look at the full collection of polish colors, it's basically a rainbow polish collection that has cheeky, gaming-inspired names for each color. Why isn't there a color featuring XBox's signature green (not the pastel green in the collection)? Why isn't there a black? What about the primary colors on the A/B/X/Y buttons? Not to mention that CTRL is leaning more into PC gaming (not console), but I won't go down that rabbit hole... (and yeah, I know that PCs have an XBox app, but seriously who is even using that...) XD

Once I started learning about how to care for wavy/curly hair I learned I had been using conditioner all wrong and that’s why my hair was always so dry and frizzy and why my scalp was always so dry, because I thought conditioner on the scalp would make my hair get greasy sooner. Now that I know better I have to wash my hair less often, hence using way less water. When I do condition my hair I do turn off the water bc it’s a few minute process to squish it in and get it rubbed into my scalp, but that means I need to wash it off my scalp too. I think it is an advert in the NYT to publicize herself and her brand. Her employees would prob rather her spent $150,000 to improve quality of life within their jobs to thank them or monetary bonuses or gifts OR actual charitable donation like to a women’s shelter which would improve quality of life of others. This is not selfless or charitable.

I can see why everyone got into contouring when heavy, matte foundation was the trend. It completely blanks out the face. That heavy makeup look never looked good in person or in natural light anyway. We have so many good lightweight foundations now, time to move on.

I love how most of this comment section is digging Selena Gomez for her thank you as, saying that she should have given them money instead. How do we know she didn’t do this as well? It’s not your money, don’t worry about it. Don’t spend your money on her brand if you think this was a publicity stunt and she didn’t actually do anything else for her employees. She probably did and isn’t blasting it from the rooftops. Sometimes it’s nice to be told as an employee that we are doing a good job. I don’t need extra money every damn time. I want to hear it straight from my boss. That actually means the world to me when they tell me things like that. Sounds like you all need to find a job like that.

i feel like the people in her company are probably being paid a livable wage anyways, so i don't see a problem with a nice gesture and no bonuses. (which she may very well have still given bonuses also, like you said). either way, who really cares how much she spent on an ad. company marketing budgets can be hundreds of millions of dollars and could be considered less ethical, so why are we freaking out about a hundred grand(give or take)......if anything it is a creative add.... 🤷♀️

Tula!!! NOOOOO... As a Discaloid Lupus erythematosus soul, Tula has been a gift(expensive one) but a good one. Selena is also a Lupus warrior, so I have a big hear for all things her.. I get what you're saying about the Garnier when it comes to getting people to think about their shower habits, but my issue with that is that it places the onus on fixing climate change and taking care of our environment on the individual consumer, when its big companies, manufacturers, and corporations who are using up the most of these resources that we're worried about. The Garnier thing just feels cringe to me because youre right, it's just a leave-in conditioner, and my question is: what is Garnier doing on a corporate level to ensure that we are taking care of our earth? Are the profits supporting politicians who are focused on climate change? Direct action from Garnier would help way more than Garnier making a product so that we use 30 seconds less water.
@eiremerald2 жыл бұрын
Totally. Notice they said in their research that it was only on the consumer-end? The majority of water waste is on the manufacturer side. It’s like trying to stick your finger in a hole on the side of the bucket when the whole bottom is blown out. If you really want to reduce the amount of water waste, buy a solid conditioner or a locally owned product from a small business.

I completely get the POV that the employees would rather have the $150K, but I want to throw a different perspective into the mix. As many have already stated, we don't know she didn't give out bonuses. So, giving her the benefit of the doubt on that: By publicly declaring appreciation for her team and also advertising with one ad, she could increase her profits which provides more capital that can go back to employees. That's actually a large reason why people get bonuses at all. It keeps morale up, but it also takes out some of their cash to decrease profits and take the tax break that follows. So, if she is truly doing this thoughtfully, she's doing it to better everyone in the long run.

Companies always pretend to care about their employees. I've worked for one company that actually cared about their workers by offering a fair salary--before the Great Resignation. They also offered retirement benefits for PT workers.

If they just came out with a new line of products and called in leave in conditioner, I would have just thought it was an additional product step, like you use regular conditioner in the shower then add leave in conditioner after, so changing that marketing does make sense to me since they want you to kind of skip the in-shower rinse out conditioner step.

Hmm, what about contouring your cheeks, Bobbi? Is that ok? When I watch people do contouring in videos, they say that if you use full coverage makeup, it's good to use a little contour and bronzer to bring in some depth back in, instead of having just a fully blanked out face. I think some people use it to minimize bumps in their noses or whatever, and I'm sure that makes them feel more confident! But most people are just bringing some life into their skin through depth and highlights. In my opinion, do whatever the fuck you want. Your body, your choice. Period. You love that contour? Honey, you do it.

I'm a gamer and the Xbox opi Collab would be cool to me if it was PlayStation...and like, that's gonna be the thing with a lot of people. Xbox vs PlayStation is a huge thing so there's that, but also, I don't play either of the games mentioned, and even if it was PS4 I'm not gonna pick them up just cause of this collab And the rare beauty ad, dude. I'm sure she has a TON of employees, but if I worked there I'd be upset that she didn't use the ~$150,000 directly towards her employees, a bonus, or just SOMEthing rather than an ad that's gonna get tossed
