Is Seminary Necessary for Ministry?

Seminary is not the only place where leaders can be trained, but there are essential skills and knowledge that those in ministry must have.

Seminary is right if that is where God has called you. A call to ministry is not necessarily a call to seminary. There are are many avenues to ministerial education. If you do decide to go to a seminary, God bless you. Pray often. Choose carefully. MikeinMinnesota

Books in seminary are available outside of seminary too. Libraries. Amazon. Book stores. A preacher should be familiar with the main subjects that are taught in an mdiv program and purchase those books for his personal libary if he is not to attend a seminary.

Matt would be a good example why one should finish. Even tho I wouldn’t typically be supporting seminars. Art type people and emotional lead ones, most certainly should to define the box they can color in. Matt is a good presenter. Lacks in sound doctrine.

I believe I excel in every area except, developing a balanced and strong hermeneutic regardless of the type of biblical literature. I definitely am challenged differently with the writing than I am with the prophets.

If you are a man who feels the call to preach/teach in pastoral ministry, seminary is a must, especially if you’re planning on doing it vocationally in the US. Most churches are looking for a formally educated leader. You will have more opportunities if you get a seminary degree.

I agree. Pastors have an absolute obligation to gain as much theological education as they can. Ignorant is not the same as stupid. What I am saying is seminary is not necessarily the next step. I’ve attended seminary and now I am distance learning at my denominational school and getting the same level of training with very similar courses. I’ve learned Greek and will be taking Hebrew shortly. I’ve elected to answer a call to ministry as a senior citizen and I’m not going for an Mdiv but I think I’m doing my homework and will be prepared to serve God effectively. Thanks for listening. Let me add .... I cringe when I hear people say things like, “all a pastor needs is to be led by the Holy Spirit.” A ministry without the Spirit is doomed but a disciplined mind trained in the basic truths of Christianity is also necessary. My church is in the process of choosing a new pastor for the first time in 22 years. We could choose a pastor with a Bible school education right up to the PhD level training that we are used to. It will be an incredibly difficult choice. Please pray for us as we enter this challenge. Mike.

What happened to becoming a new creature and quit sinning? Thought that was enuff because we are in a spiritual war according to Ephesians 6. I thought we overcome Satan by the blood of the lamb and the word of our testimony. Jesus didn’t go to seminary, Paul didn’t! You can go to cemetery school and die and go to hell. Last o checked the power of the Holy Ghost to walk Right and talk right was enuff

Mel, Jesus didn’t need seminary. He is God. Paul was an extremely well educated man steeped in the Scriptures, a Pharisee among Pharisees and taught under Gamaliel (sp) at the best of rabbinical schools. Education is not a bad thing just be careful about what you are learning. MikeinMinnesota
