Sentinel killed the primes so that he wouldn't have to serve under them, which is pretty much what D-16 ends up doing to him. While Sentinel did it for personal glory, D-16 felt it was justified and wanted to reform the system by extreme methods so that they wouldn't be second-class citizens. Nevertheless, there's a cycle of violence that Orion tried to stop his friend from perpetuating, and he failed, leading to Megatron becoming a potentially worse (albeit more understandable) monster.

It didn't get brought up in the movie, but I think there's two reasons he secretly started having t-cogs removed from new forged Transformers. First is because it makes them smaller. Thus, they need less energon to function and tgat means more he can give the Quintessons. Second is it creates an easily marginalized group that has to earn their place yet is also too weak to actually fight for change.

I think Optimus and Megatron were both right on how handeling Sentinel. Megatron is right that Sentinel needed to pay, but Optimus is right that Cybertron needs to be united and that by exposing the truth Cybertron can take down Sentinel and rebuild. I leaned towards Optimus a bit more. When making or remaking a society you need to construct some order to quell the chaos. Megatron just wanted the chaos. If he sided more Optimus, Sentinel still would've been tried for his crimes and most likely been executed or exiled. Remember Optimus said rebuilding Iacon can't start with an execution it doesn't mean it can't lead with that.

You gotta appreciate how Transformers live for millions of years. So at one point, all the Transformers alive had cogs, knew it was standard to have cogs. Then all the primes die, Sentinel is promoted to Prime without the matrix, and suddenly cogless bots are being created and then shamed into working in the mines. And nobody questioned what Sentinel was doing or where the cogless bots were coming from.

The big twist was his point of no return came because he critically wounded Orion and then dropped him while Sentinel's death more or less cemented his path.
