It's a need for most people, both men and women. Ask prison guards what happens in male and female correction facilities. Ask soldiers about what they see married people do in foreign lands and then ask what the spouses do at home. Observe celibate communities and how often violations occur. Notice how often people violate laws with tremendous consequences despite feeling unhappy about it, because they fail to control the need driving them. See how often a married person cheated and then confesses because their values are at odds with their actions, and yet they succumbed to the need. Look into how often people pursue sex despite it being lethal to them if caught (homosexials in certain communities, for example). There are people who can overcome the need with various techniques and perhaps some who have hormonal traits that temper the need, but these are exceptions and not representative of what one should expect when answering this question.

No, you can either control your urges or let them control you. Physically, sex is not a requirement to live/survive. You can go without sex your entire life and suffer no physical ill effects because of it. Based on what information we have, before the sexual revolution of the 1960’s, sex was seen and treated as a private and thrilling activity with one’s partner in a marriage. Women’s attitudes of the day demonstrated that most felt and treated as something between just them and their husbands alone. Sex before marriage for both men and women was discouraged, but women still received the brunt of the consequences if they chose to enjoy it outside the confines of a marriage. Sex was seen as an expression of love and care for a permanent partner, and this sentiment based on many accounts, seemed to be the prevailing belief amongst the majority of society. Self gratification and a wide range of partners was not seen as an achievement, and it was not encouraged. Innocence was valued in children and even adults before marriage, especially in young women. The majority of women in those days went into a marriage as virgins, as did most of their husbands though there is evidence that it was to a lesser extent then their female counterparts. Now on one hand when it came to class in society, the working class was the worst offender for sex before marriage, yet even if that took place, there was still an obligation in society and it was a practice to marry the one for whom you had sex with. So once again, this idea of the need of multiple sexual partners just doesn’t add up when you look into the historical context. This attitude, belief and practice that men need sex is relatively unique to our day and age, as based on the research we have today. Most men before the sexual revolution, would remain virgins till marriage or remain celibate till the day they died if they couldn’t find a partner. It was not common for men before then, to “need” sex to the extent we see today.
