Is Shiba Inu really difficult? As a first time dog owner, a common question was asked "Is Shiba Inu a difficult breed?" As a Shiba Inu owner myself I'd like to share some of my observations about this unique yet sometimes difficult breed.

We have a shiba and he is seriously the best dog ever and has been so perfect for our family. I don’t know if we just got lucky but he is not difficult, he’s super low maintenance, clean and loyal to his family. He isn’t super affectionate but gives kisses and likes to hangout near us. He’s 15 and has had absolutely no health issues for the first 14 years, earlier this year he had geriatric vestibular syndrome but made a full recovery!

One thing that doesn’t get mentioned is how low maintenance the Shiba Inu is. Of all the dogs in the past that I have had the Shiba is truly the best in no health or reoccurring problems. Just vaccines. I even question that for a breed that survived 10,000 years?

@@albertorolamo2383 The Shiba inu was bred with other dog breeds to save it from extinction. Thats how they have many advantages from different types of breeds while also keeping their natural appearance. Its hard to explain.

To be fair, as someone who only had cats, a shiba inu is basically the closest to having a cat-like dog :D

I just got a shiba inu, I was frustrated in the beginning when it wasn't affectionate like my previous dogs, but because I love cats and know their behaviour, I chose to work with my dog like a cat. And it is rewarding. I just have to not mind the lack of affection first.

I think all dogs are a challenge when you do not bring them up right. All dogs need rules, boundaries and respect. First dog, name, and then breed. With some dogs you need more patience, and many people don’t have patience.

I have a 2 year old Shiba, named Ellie. She is amazing. She loves absolutely everyone, especially humans. Ellie loves to cuddle and is super smart. She knows every trick in the book. Training went really well. The only "issue", is that I can’t let her go free in areas outside, because she would run off to meet and greet everyone😂😂 She is so calm and great inside though, and great with our newborn baby. Really recommend this dog for anyone who wants a smart and beautiful but stubborn breed!

It depends on what you want out of a dog. Shibas are very self sufficient, so typically aren't lap dogs, licking your face all the time. My shiba would occasionally jump on my lap as to say hello, maybe sit a few minutes, then would find a more comfortable spot to sit (often in the same room though). He slept on the bed and was very adaptable to my schedule, often away for work for 10 hours or more. He was only destructive once, when he was still in a crate (actually got out of the crate and tore up the house, trying to get outside where my father was working on the yard). Maybe I got lucky, but he was my first dog and I really didn't have issues other than medical expenses (luxating patellas within the first year), so be careful to get your puppy from a reputable breeder for some protection from the most common health issues (patellas, hips, eyes).

My Shiba, Kenji, is definitely independent, but we've taught him to cuddle - when he feels like it. He takes turns cuddling me and my husband every night in bed. However, he does need his space and sometimes sleeps on the sofa! He is a very sweet, loyal, and affectionate companion. I wouldn't want any other breed.

As a former loving companion of a Shiba Inu I always told people that they were getting a small wolf in the house. They are an old breed and love their pack, but everyone outside of the pack is treated with suspicion. Also good to know is that vets (at least in the Netherlands) tend to be terrified of the breed. Even when my pup was completely limp with illness the vet wouldn't touch her without a muzzle on. Even with the muzzle on they are still so afraid that you have to pay attention that they actually do their best to treat your dog!
@SuperShiba
@SuperShiba 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I did hear some horror stories about Shiba screams at the vet. They are like an ancient mini wolf in the house and I absolutely love them. I do think early on socialization is really important for this breed since they do tend to get suspicious with strangers and can get aggressive if not train properly.

@@YarnluvinLizzy1 good to hear. I don’t know if my experience is generalizable. I’ve had four vets being terrified of my dog even though she was muzzled. So that’s what I based my comment on. I’m glad to hear that there are vets that aren’t afraid.

I am a first time dog owner and my first pup is a shiba inu. Had him since he's 8 weeks. He is extremely loving and friendly, either to human or another animals. He is extremely affectionate and obeydian as well. My training was honestly way easier than what these videos said. I'd say it's case by case; sometimes people just love exaggerating. I dunno, maybe it's a difference between owning a dog since baby or since adult.

Hi Squall183, welcome to my channel and thanks for the comment. It might not be the answer you want to hear but I do not recommend to have Shiba Inu off leash. The reason is they were originally bred for hunting and will chase anything that moves even if you told him not to during a walk. Also of course they are stubborn as hell and have a mind of it’s own. I have not seen anyone letting their Shiba off leash unless at a dog park.

I have had mostly small dogs in my past, Papillons and Yorkie but now thinking about getting a somewhat (bigger) dog and was thinking about a Shiba Inu. I do have some questions that I hope someone can answer. In the video, you say that they are both independent and affectionate (loyal) are they cuddly since that is something I love to do with my dogs, which is an important trait for me. Another thing that struck me was about their stubborn nature. I think you said that makes them harder to train but I also picked up that giving a new trick to learn might give them their need for a mental workout. Something of a paradox or maybe just harder for the owner. Have I understood correctly?

@SuperShiba
@SuperShiba 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ashley, thanks for the comment and welcome to the channel. If I were you I would get a second dog at least 5 years apart from each other, one reason for that is you want to make sure your current dog is very mature and well trained and also you don't want all your dogs to pass away at the same time. I don't think it matters if you introduce Shiba Inu first or second as long as you introduce them gradually with each others and introduce them from a neutral territory(for example on a leash during a walk first). Those are my own opinion about getting a second dog. Good luck👍

"What you Should Know Before getting a Shiba Inu":kzbin.info/www/bejne/nWe4ZX1sl9Sngqc Here is another one that mentioned about training:kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnbOf2SQad2tb5Y But most importantly, enjoy and have fun with your new puppy👍

I also found shiba an anxious dog breed I got mine when it was 6 months old and two years later he still has anxiety when it comes to certain things. He is scared of children people playing sports, hates the vet and getting a bath with nail trimming, I have to sedate him :/ Get it desensitized to everything you can imagine. Take the puppy shopping with you put it in a sling. If you don't want to cut his nails every 2-3 or bathe him regularly find a groomer. Like the video said you have to be very firm with them since day 1 don't spoil this dog breed at all! I made that mistake and they are stubborn and willful enough to get their way.

I have a five months female Chiba inu puppy of that is too friendly and like to jump on all people. Any tips for correcting this behavior?
@SuperShiba
@SuperShiba 3 жыл бұрын
Hi David, thanks for the comment and welcome to the channel. if you want to correct dog jumping on you you can simply turn your back on her whenever her jumps. Or loudly say "NO!". Keep in mind all household members need to have the same negative response whenever the dog jumps. By repetition the NO commend or turn your back on her your dog should be able to associate jump means no play and she will jump less. I hope this helps👍

what's a shiba inu's diet? also, how do you get it to continue walking when it stops
@SuperShiba
@SuperShiba 3 жыл бұрын
Just like any other breed, you want to provide your dog high quality balanced diet whether it is dry food or can food. We give our dog Jimmy dry dog food and occasionally add some egg yolk, salmon and fruits. Make sure you look at dog food ingredients and select the one with more natural ingredients without too many additives. Follow the feeding portion on the bag as a general guidance. With stopping in the middle thing that is a typically Shiba move unfortunately. You can either wait it out or pretend there are super excited things going on in the front to encourage him to move. I sometimes also try to move him to different directions to see if that will keep him moving. Unfortunately, I don’t have a magic cure for dog stopping in the middle of the street and you need to understand that it is part of Shiba nature. Good luck!

If you are still a kid or young teenager who lives with parents. Check with your parents if getting a dog is a good idea because you likely is going to need help to raise a dog. I also recommend you watch this video series that should give you a good idea of how to take care of a Shiba Inu - kzbin.info/aero/PLYagEnH2NyM9PmuO22MdVWW24wXOSjrud Good luck👍

My neighbor friends own a young shiba. He play bites me, as I’m not the owner just a visitor, how can I keep from being bitten. I have a concern when shiba gets older...
@SuperShiba
@SuperShiba 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff. thanks for the comment and welcome to the channel. it will be harder to train because it is your neighbor's dog, not yours. the same training technique should still work even if it is not your dog. When you get bit, you can either loudly tell him no or create a yepping sound like it hurts, this should send him signals that his bit is hurting you. You can also immediately withdrawn yourself from all activities if he bites, this will tell him biting means game over. good luck 👍

@@SuperShiba Hey great! thank you kindly for your reply. I will utilize your suggestions. He is a very smart dog, he is a master escaper and ends up in our yard at least once per week+! I played with him today as he came to the fence, he gnaws on my hand so will no longer give him that option. Thank you.

i grew up with 2 shibas, and sadly we were poor trainers, and my god are they stubborn in their own ways, they want to go somewhere you're on the leash not the dog, and if they wanna fight a dog 3 times its size it will to, one of my shibas (dont have it anymore) decided to fight a dog which was a giant compared, the shiba managed to wrestle it and win, these dogs are pure muscle. also i agree, dont get a shiba as a first dog, he/she requires enormous dedication, so only get one if u have the time to make it your n1 priority, especially as a puppy. TLDR: Don't underrestimate the pride, stubborness and strength of this lovely doggo, he'll make you its bitch.

Hi thanks for sharing, indeed Shiba Inu is not a regular dog, for those who don't understand its personality it can be a pain in as*. BUT like you mentioned if you dedicate your time to the dog and put him as your priority at least the first few months the journey of raising one can be extremely rewarding.

LADIES and GENTLEMEN Last year in October 2020, Shiba was sitting on ten zeros 000000000076. This year in October, Shiba is sitting on only 4 zeros 000026. This has happened within a year. Do you need God to come down to tell you my daughter, my son invest in Shiba because you're about to become a millionaire? No, it's clear. Next year October by this time, the 4 zeros you see will be a thing of the past. If mathematics is needed in Shiba, why within a year 6 zeros have disappeared? If you don't become rich with Shiba, your ancestors will be laughing at you because they didn't have this opportunity. There's always Judas Iscariot in every good opportunity. Don't listen to negative comments from the enemies of progress. Thanks you. Long Live Shiba. Long Live us all.🙏

I had a kangal dog that died last month and this dog gave new meaning to the word " stubborn" . She would not come when pulling on the leash but i discovered that if i got on her side and gently pushed with my leg and knee , she would respond immediately and move in the direction of the push . this might also work for a Shiba .

Can confirm this does work. I'll often even stand in front of mine when he sits and refuses to move. When he gives eye contact, we can continue the walking lol. Also tossing a treat/stick/ball works, too. Or... acting interested in something else.
