Is Shonen Jump Cancelling Too Many Manga?

Has Weekly Shonen Jump been cancelling series too often and too quickly? With series like Neru: Way of the Martial Artist and The Hunters Guild: Red Hood dropping left and right and barely making it to 20 chapters, it seems hard for anyone to have success in the magazine. But is this outside of the norm, or is this just the magazine being as cutthroat as it's always been?

Maybe. But was there as many series at the top as there are today? The "top 3 voting system" they implement basically makes it so when there are 3 great series of the same type, a new one that is similar gets much fewer votes. *For example: Phantom Seer.* being a supernatural shounen battle manga directly competes with Jujutsu Kaisen and also clash with other popular battle manga like One Piece and BHA. It's not too far-fetched to assume a lot of the shounen battle manga fans would vote for One Piece and BHA, and those who are also fans of supernatural genre would vote for Jujutsu Kaisen before Phantom Seer. Meanwhile, a comedy series like Witch Watch gets votes from people who would vote for comedy before battle manga, which might even net them plenty of "first" votes. Basically, the more big series clash with yours, the less chance you get to receive one of 3 votes, and even less to receive "first" or "second", which are worth more. Being the fourth pick of the majority of people doesn't give you any votes from them. Meanwhile, series that clash less get those stray niche votes, that are enough to put them ahead even if the majority wouldn't pick them over the fourth best battle manga series if given only the two as options.

Most series that end at 19 chapters are actually canceled at around 10 to 13. Jump authors are generally 3 weeks ahead of the magazine, and are told of a series calculation normally 4 to 6 weeks prior. So if a series ends at chapter 19, there's a good chance the author was informed around the publication of chapter 10 or 11.

The thing unfortunate is, many of these series that got cancelled are actually not "bad", some are "decent"(of course, not good enough to Shonen Jump's standards. But after getting stopped by Shonen Jump, the series didn't go into making it as their stand alone manga that is simply not on Jump. This I think is very unfortunate. Many of those mangas I would like to see continue.
@jimjimson6208

As someone who reads lot of webcomics I agree that these series are far from "bad" (I have seen plenty of bad comics lol), they just aren't outstanding either. I agree that it would be cool if they could continue as an independent manga or something but from a business perspective I can kinda see why they don't want that. I also imagine that a lot of authors would want to continue trying to get a publication with a different series rather than continue working on a less financially appealing indie comic, although I obviously don't speak for everyone. Definitely an interesting discussion though, because for a lot of these series there is nothing glaringly 'wrong' with them, they just don't stand out enough and it's a shame to see them disappear.

Half of the old manga are already shit tier after being forced to rewrite and stretch the story, instead shonen editors decides to keep killing new works with potential by forcing their overused shonen formula on original ideas. There is no Jump standard, just old ideas rotting with time.

I'm fairly certain all the editorial staff cares about is whether or not it is popular, not whether it is unique or generic. YES, I'm glad we have the same train of thought. it's because Shonen Plus app exists now. -BEFORE Shonen plus We all only read what the english publishers licensed, which most of the time is already a success train. Even scanlators won't bother scanlating EVERY manga that's currently in the magazine. -NOW AFTER Shonen plus We got ALL manga in the magazine translated for us. ALL, including one shots and limited runs. So now we experience what the Japanese reader feels when they are reading Shonen Jump. Getting invested into new Series, to suddenly getting the news it was getting the axe. Also, while yes statistically, One Piece was more likely to get axed, but IMO I don't think it's in any trouble of getting the axe. By Chapter 10, it's vs Buggy with Luffy, Zoro, and Nami pulling the weight. By Chapter 20 vs Buggy is resolved. IMO, the recently cancelled series has similar issue. They are mostly too slow to get to the real action or plot. Kowloon ball parade : NEVER did a proper baseball game until the later chapters, spent way too much time recruiting. Candy Flurry : PLOT where, spent too long on trying to join the organization Red Hood : Spent too long on the hunter exam Neru : There was never a real fight until the later chapter.

This is exactly what I’ve been telling people. Series aren’t cancelled for no reason (some cases are a little baffling but that’s rare). If a series is axed they almost always have some type of major flaw. They are slow , I reread Naruto and Bleach and they already hit at chapter 10, while nowadays , it's normally a hit before chapter 10 , then it's calm for the rest of the series . This first due that Naruto and Bleach started without 100% plan and the authors was dedicated to put everything they have in their series without any regrets if they get cancelled ; while nowadays authors want to plan 100% of their work , using foreshadowing and other storytelling tools and finishing their series like 3-5 years after starting it , then making another series, etc.

As someone who was absoltuely devastated by the death of Time paradox Ghost Writer and Zipman, I think it's important to consider that, at base, WSJ is catering specifically to Japanese Audiences and the West continues largely to be an afterthought in their calculus as to what should stay or go. People HATED TPGW in Japan because of the main character's plagiarism and it ate shit immediately. I tend to think you can tell when series are not long for this world because there is a certain it factor that's missing. Most of the series that have been cancelled in the last 3 years I found unengaging, hard to follow, or just kinda flat; even ones I enjoyed. There tend to be some self-evident failings which hamstring the series. But I also think given the limited number of slots in the magazine - and a bevy of staples that Jump has kept running recently I think just over Half of the magazine has series in excess of 60 chapters which I haven't seen in my time reading - the burden to be good at the start is increasingly on the newbies who, as you point out, areas statistically less likely to survive. I don't envy Jump having to balance out giving opportunities to new writers, catering to long terms staple series, finding a good genre balance, and maintaining circulation which evidently decreased to 1.4 million this year in paper copies, not to mention reusing well known mangaka who pull numbers. Interseting video, and interesting perspective. All th best

Putting something on the app means it represents the company and is the company’s property. This means they’re gonna have to keep editing, paying the author, and in general spending a lot of money on something that won’t give them much return. Both your points stand strong, and are quite true. I'd say that putting it online IS different, though: the reason why Jump has a limited amount of series at a time is due to the magazine's pages. Without it, there's little reason to prevent it due to "page limits". On another note, it's true that the editor is required. They could, though, get inspired by how other comics apps do things (I'm thinking of webtoons) and allow them to just make the series as they like without the supervision of an editor, but it would be on a dedicated section of the app. I just feel like it's a waste of potential for many series that could have been great but they're tied to the liking of a relatively small amount of Japanese readers.

I feel that most of the series that get cancelled you kinda can see coming when do get cancelled. I find if the main character doesn't really stand out in a crowd then it ends up getting cancelled early on. Look at Luffy, Yugi, Senku, Naruto, Deku, Asta, Mashle or Ichigo. Each of these characters look pretty unique. Compare that to the main characters of Phantom Seer or Our Blood Oath with characters that kinda don't stand out in a crowd visually and you already have an uphill battle. Jump right now feels like they're just throwing grim edgy monster fighting manga at us to try and get us a new Demon Slayer. And I don't know, it's just not working anymore. Sure we got Chainsawman and JJK but I feel we've had so many other not so great ones along the way. For me I loved Red Hood, but from day one I always felt that it focused on the wrong main character. Should have always been about Grimm because Velou just wasn't an interesting protagonist. (I also like Nine dragon ball parade, it's just I know why it failed) Eyeshield 21 did a better job of building a team from zero. They didn't spent chapters to recruit one character. They just added Everyone that's available from Hiruma's blackmail book. Sena's Bullies the 3 Hey brothers, and 3 other club members to quickly build a team and do proper matches. Then after a few time, they started to develop these characters. Like the Bullies became strong Linemens and became important players in the team.

Guardian of the Witch I feel was "OK", I can't remember the exact plot since it has been a while but I remember feeling like it kind of lacked direction in how it was getting to its end goal. TPG had a banging first chapter but IMO it chose to focus on the complete wrong aspect of the story (him making manga) rather than the actual mystery of why his microwave turned into a time machine and who was on the other end. It also never really felt like there was much tension IMO although I guess that is subjective. It felt to me like an interesting time travel mystery that just turned into discount Bakuman for some reason. I also really like Phantom Seer, especially the art! Candy Flurry was on my reading list, I only read the first couple of chapters and told myself I would come back and read it later when I was less busy with work, sucks to hear it got cancelled :(

@@jimjimson6208 Guardian of the Witch wasn't the greatest thing ever, but I loved the designs, and thought the fights were cool. They reminded me of Xenoblade Chronicles 2, where one character has the power and the other wields it. Time Paradox Ghost Writer only had 18 chapters, they were probably going to get into why he suddenly had a time machine, but cut it out because they would rather give the characters a satisfying ending instead of explaining how the world works. Same, when you see the mouth of the girl open and those arms come out, it gave me shivers with how great it was. Another special moment was Yayoi and Iori's combo move. Yeah, it had a strong start but after like chapter 10 it felt the brunt of being forced to end early. I kept telling myself that having a big fight in 13 chapters was to make later fights even bigger, but I was only fooling myself.

For TPG you are probably right, I am just mad that they (if I recall correctly) hit us up with the "I don't have time to explain" when he actually got to communicate with the person in the future during the ending. I would have preferred closure on the mystery than the characters but that is just my personal preference lol

This was such an informative video! Thanks for backing up your claims with actual data. I was thinking that WSJ was canceling things way too frequently cause this year I've decided to be up to date on all their manga, and they recently canceled Candy Flurry, Red Hood, and Neru, however your analysis of the numbers makes sense of why this happens. It's something frequent, and if anything (like you showed in your video) WSJ seems to be giving new manga a bit more of a fighting chance with the average chapter length being 19ish in lieu of the 13ish average from a couple decades back. It's also refreshing to read new stories like Ayashimon which just debuted, or like staying up to date with Sakamoto Days, Elusive Samurai, and Blue Box to see how the stories develop. I like that it's cutthroat! I'm curious to hear what you think of all the new series since your last vid about it, Blue Box, Candy Flurry, Red Hood, Neru, PPPPPP, and Ayashimon. The average manga reader started reading the cancelled Jump series when the two big scanlation groups, Mangastream and (to a lesser degree) Jaiminisbox, closed down and stopped translating Jump series, respectively. Before then, most people's exposure to Jump series was basically whatever these two groups liked and translated, and as far as I can remember they didn't translate every single series, only the ones they happened to like (mangastream was like that, at least. I didn't follow JB until shortly before they closed down too). Few people cared about Jump's whole catalogue, they just wanted to read Naruto or Bleach or One Piece and they got the series from mangastream and maybe picked up some less popular but still going strong series like Assassination Classroom because it happened to be where they read manga. However, now that the go-to places for reading the popular Jump series have the whole magazine instead of just a select few titles, people are actually reading these series that get cancelled, and noticing that they're getting cancelled. Like you said in your video, the impression that Jump is killing more series than usual is just a byproduct of us actually noticing unsuccessful series only in the last couple years.

I get a physical copy of the magazine very week, and it's very clear over time that there are certain genres that they're trying to have represented, in order to court a wide audience. (Romance, horror, comedy, and sports are just as important as the usual battle manga we're used to in the states.) So when I see Red Hood or Phantom Seer get cancelled, even if it's sad, I get it. The fight to be the next big battle manga is WAY more intense than the fight to be the next big, say, sports manga. In 2021, the biggest sports contenders were Nine Dragons' Ball Parade and Blue Box, and that was pretty much it. (Blue Box handily won that battle.)

I mean... Shonen Jump IS the world's #1 manga magazine, it would make sense its editors have to be very stringent and selective of what continues in its pages and what gets the ax. WSJ NEEDS series that can go the distance like Naruto or One Piece... cause the series it currently has can only last so long. Heck, I love UndeadXUnluck and it hasn't even hit the 100 mark and you can see the final climax looming in the distance. It's the burden of being #1; you have to keep churning out stellar content because if you let anything that's just good stick around... that means one less spot for a series that could have been the next One Piece not getting serialized OR WORSE getting serialized by a competing magazine like Monthly Shonen Jump or Shonen Sunday.

They are editors, a LOT of editors, when the new series are in disscusion before they got serialize you can see new gems that can be good enough and what are good and need TIME to be a big name in the magazine. Its really sad read some new works and they got axed bcs they cant competed with one of the longest and atractive manga of all time. You cant compete with One piece in 10 episodes, and if you can maybe they can do a better job and see that coming before serialize the new manga.

The Shonen Jump magazines belief is that if you’re not growing you’re dying. If one piece was as popular as it is and ranked last they’d cancel it just to see if they could do better. This is why they are so successful but it’s also a shame. Red hood and Neru would’ve succeeded if not thrived in other magazines. Some artists need to stop beating themselves up for not making it in jump and maybe give up on it too. It’s not worth it for some creators. Some of you might be old enough to remember how unbelievably stacked the lineup of jump in the 2000s was and how any new series struggled against the 10+ concurrent juggernaut series at any time. Butt know this, i think the comment that One Piece would not make it past a year if it started now may be true the more i think about it. in the last couple years i have been feeling that WSJ series are become less traditional shonan in the sense that many of the series are getting darker, and more violent. But this increased maturity is most likely due to the increase in the average age of those buying the magazine to continue reading longer series like one piece that they started when they were younger.

The reason for the shift is that they are chasing the trend and finding their own Attack on Titan. World Trigger was a kiddiefied answer to it, but that momentum was unfortunately halted. They did finally get what they wanted with Demon Slayer so hopefully they'll finally move on. I do think they're keeping their eyes out for something more light - Mashle somewhat shows this even though I don't care its humor. I think One Piece could survive simply because there would be a nostalgia factor like Toriko had. The problem is whether people would bite. When I think of the timing, OP was greenlit as a series of its era - early One Piece reminds me of a Toriyama shonen series so the magazine would risk it during those days, plus Dai no Daibouken ended so greenlighting a series with a fantasy world was logical.

While I understand the industry is super competitive and it makes sense from a business stand point to only give a series 20-30 chapters to get an audience, I can't help but feel like we're kinda missing out. The majority of series that get big on Jump are stories that have a great hook and fast pace, but also doesn't it kinda feel like a lot of creators fumble the ending? Maybe I'm totally off the mark, but I've always thought Jump's method favors creators that can come up with cool concepts over everything else. A lot of them then struggle once they need to start fleshing out their world and characters, and especially their endings. I mean, that's not true across the board of course, but I personally feel like a lot of Jump series have pretty shallow characters that never develop past one or two traits, especially the action and comedy series. I do think the pressure for every single chapter to be fast-paced and easily consumable plays into that. Shallow isn't always bad per se, but I do wish creators got more time so maybe we could get a few more series that built tension and atmosphere at the beginning instead of just rushing into the action every single time.

It's important to notice that many series get axed AFTER being out for many years. A lot of "fumbled" endings happen because they get axed. For example, Bleach, Katekyo Hitman Reborn, Shaman King, Shokugeki no Souma (this one I'm not 100% sure, but I'm pretty sure it was axed). They weren't meant to be ending where they did. They ended because they were forced to. Basically, doesn't matter how long the manga has been out, if both their ranks and their volume sales drop and can't recover, they get dropped just like any other series.

From what little I know about the inner workings of the manga industry, there is also a reverse version of this problem where highly successful titles don't get to end properly BECAUSE they're selling so well. Higher ups don't like to end a cash-cow series, so those titles are forced to carry on long after the creator's original conclusion point was reached. Eventually, the "zombie franchise" title jumps the shark and gets unceremoniously cancelled. If that's true, then it's no wonder the "Final Boss Fight" of the series "Bakuman" was the characters trying to end their own in-universe manga when they wanted to.

This is why a lot of manga have either gone through independent publishing(doujin works for the none stupid), to other publication companies(japan has more than 100 jump isn't the only one, try reading something other than shounen), webtoons or even just started posting things on their twitter and having a fanbox. Shounen jump's standards are still very high despite them loosening up a bit more through the years. It'll eventually bite them in the ass but right now they're a little too up in it to notice. I think instead of declaring manga as "dead", manga readers need to broaden their horizons on where to find manga rather than just looking at jump and their other sub publications. The industry is thriving and I find it extremely hypocritical that people are chewing shounen jump out for not having a wide selection of publicized works then ignore other publications, be it a company or indepdent unless it was a recent anime or the big new fad. Also, just a bit of an opinion, but just cause another manga had top spot for a year or two, doesn't mean its now more successful than one piece. 11 years as top and still rarely leaving the top 10 within the recent years, is not easy to beat and I'm not even a fan of OP.

Many of these manga simply seemed to know what they wanted to do with their stories, but as they kept going it was more than clear that what they wanted was too ambitious for their skills. That's why I value the same authors coming back like Yuki Tabata. And many more.

@@daitairikka Don't know anything about the series since I haven't read it, but there had to be some issues otherwise it would have gained enough popularity to stay. Either it wasn't interesting within the first ten chapters (150-200 pages roughly), was too similar to other series, was generic, etc. I can understand people loving series, but there definitely has to be flaws if it doesn't survive. If it got overshadowed by other series in the same genre, that's because it didn't stick out in designs or in it's first chapter or two. It sucks, but this is how it has to be. To my knowledge, we never really got details about exactly what happened. It's entirely possible that something happened in the author's personal life right when the series was coming to a close and that necessitated condensing down the ending a bit to take care of business. I'm still holding out hope for an anime adaptation which could potentially see a slight tweak to bring the ending back in line with the original vision.

Great video, lines up with what I found from the 90s/00s/10s. I think the biggest change Jump should make now is factor in the overseas market. I wouldn’t be surprised if Red Hood and Phantom Seer were significantly more popular outside of Japan, but we don’t have a chance to really give any input. I remember before Viz revamped the Jump app, they would give subscribers a weekly survey to rate series like the one in Japan. No idea if they really factored in our opinions, but it could be good to have something similar.

There's no "overseas market" yet, western manga sales are still irrelevant to Japan and it will probably never change, manga is a cultural thing in Japan while is just a hobby here in the west and it will never be mainstream enough, a "niche" manga in Japan has better sales than a popular one here, Shonen Jump has no reason to take western opinion when keeping something alive specially when the west love mediocre battle shounen that sells nothing as much as they love McDonalds. Shonen Jump would probably be done in some years if they start catering to western shallow taste in new series over japanese audience.

I remember when Viz went digital in 2012 and experience Barrage being cancelled. It was sad to see that series go but to see Horikoshi find huge Success with MHA shows that it definitely helps creators move on and create something that can become hugely popular. I also feel like Samurai 8 was the first time I've seen a mangaka fail at gaining a huge audience and creating another popular property. When you see too many successful series out there for so long it's hard to see what isn't getting far and I'm glad we get to see that a lot more since Viz started publishing every new series in english.

I remember back when I regularly read manga, the amount of anxiety I would get every time I'd find a new manga I liked because I never knew whether or not it would get canceled. It was especially tragic when a series I liked would get a poorly implemented rushed ending due to an unexpected cancelation. There's also the inverse problem, when a publisher pressures a mangaka to prolong a series, making it overstay it's welcome. I think 90-150 chapters is a sweet spot.

I think something many people dont get is that Weekly Shonen Jump isnt meant to be producing just "decent manga". It is meant to be producing "the next big multimedia hit" for Shueisha. They dont want something that just sells ok. They want something that might succeed as an anime and sell merch. As such, keeping a good artist producing a decent but very flawed manga is counterproductive for the interests of the magazine. Not only is that flawed manga taking the spot of a title that might be way more successful, but by cancelling that title, the artist might return later with a more fleshed out idea. Also, I never ran the numbers but I've been saying "50% of Shonen Jump titles are cancelled around chapter 20, 75% around chapter 40" for years and I am glad I was ALMOST right.
@frenchbaguetteoui
@frenchbaguetteoui 2 жыл бұрын
20 chapters should be enough to hook people. It only seems to be manga where the mentality is "chapter 637 is when it gets good, bro!" Every other storytelling medium, you never need that long to know if something is worth your time or not. Maybe manga needs to learn to get to the point quicker instead of meandering for chapters with little to say. So many series either start off slow as shit or are really episodic until the mangka finally finds what he wants their series to be about and that's not what hooks people. Know the story you're telling before you start. It's simple, really.

It just sucks that a story can be lost forever when a manga gets cancelled we never get some kind of goodbye article where a mangaka details what their plan was and possibly give us a rundown of what they’re specific ending was going to be. I say this because not every cancelled series has at least a thrown together ending to at least give us a bittersweet sort of conclusion, some series just disappear never to be mentioned by the creator or anyone in an official capacity.😥🤷‍♂️ but I digress
