I’m in my 60’s and began sitting at home to urinate. Mostly this keeps the area around the toilet cleaner. Less splash. Also, sitting allows me to be more efficient.

I have the opposite issue, I guess it's a personal body shape issue, but if I sit sometimes the pee flies too high, hits the bottom of the toilet seat and that makes a lot of mess.

As you know, urination is a conditional reflex, if someone has the habit of peeping in standing position, he will get urgency and may dripple while walking to toilet On the contrary, when used urinates while sitting, on standing and walking to toilet, the desire becomes less, so giving him the chance to go safely avoiding urgency and dripping. Got my idea

I’m in my 30’s, and have been urinating while sitting since probably my mid 20’s. It started as an effort to keep the toilets cleaner for my female housemates, and I just never stopped. It’s also a nice little break to sit, as I’m on my feet the majority of the day. I typically only use a urinal when I’m in public for hygienic reasons.

I’m in my late 60’s and have been sitting to urinate for decades simply because it’s easier to keep the toilet cleaner. Splitting chores around the house and having to clean the bathroom taught me fairly quickly to make less of a mess. When you clean your own toilet it becomes very obvious how messy standing to urinate is. The other benefit is it’s more comfortable.

I began sitting instead of standing in my early 20's when I was living and sharing a bathroom with several women. I started doing it at first just to be courteous and ensure the seat was always down and free of drops of urine. Their appreciation encouraged me to continue to do it after we went our separate ways. I tried to teach and encourage my sons to do it with little success. Now in my 50's, sometimes I stand and urinate in a urinal if I am in public, otherwise I always sit.

If I could up-vote this a hundred times, I would. I am 68 years old. For the past few years, I most often urinate sitting down. I have BPH. This video is 100% accurate per my experience. At a younger age, I had issues dribbling and incomplete emptying. Those symptoms progressed until I began sitting to urinate. That helped. Guys, we hear about the effects of aging on women (menopause), but we don't hear about the effects of aging on men. Guys, it is not an assault on your masculinity to sit down to pee!!

Reducing the mess is biggest motivator because it doesn't matter how perfectly one aims there's always splashback up & out of the bowl, even when trying to minimize that by aiming for 'the beach' area. The other thing is reduction in the noise of it when others are trying to sleep.

There's another reason for sitting rather than standing. My wife brought this to my attention probably about 40 years ago. When you stand your pee hits the water at a very high rate of speed. That causes your pee to splatter not only in the bowl but outside of it as well. She showed me the wall next to the bowl with a ultraviolet light, and just like blood or semen leaves a stain on the wall your pee also leaves stains. That flew right over my head I had never thought about this. So I've been sitting almost just as much time as we've been married. 43 years married this year 😅.

I agree. It can be a little inconvenient to have to take your pants down, but it will save you from cleaning the pee off the walls. You can scrub the toilet and the floor, but until the walls are wiped down the bathroom will never smell clean. It’s really kind of gross and unsanitary if you really think about it.

I'm 75, had the TRP at age 52 for enlarged prostate. Symptoms returned about ten years later. Urologist recommended I drink a bottle of red wine every night, which I do, greatly reducing my symptoms. Sometime in the last eight or ten years I started sitting when convenient and always before going to sleep and after getting up. I found, and this was confirmed by the urologist when I had a visit a few months ago, that I can completely empty my bladder sitting. One benefit is I almost never get up at night to pee. Note that at home my dad always sat to pee because as a young man he was a merchant seaman, where the drill was to sit, to avoid missing the head due to the motion of the boat.

Also, I will freely admit, "I am a clean freak when it comes to my bathroom and my home in general." Everyone knows that if you stand (which is not a problem), you better ensure that the seat, rim, and bowl are clean after you finish, or I will bring it to your attention. After defecating I always feel an urge to pee; however, the urine doesn't flow immediately, it needs some time. My theory is that the passage of stool puts pressure on the urethra or the bladder and therefore stimulates peeing, but since the urethra gets constricted it needs time to relax and dilate. For this reason, after defecation I usually have to come back soon to expel the remaining urine.

I think the only places where I pee standing today are restaurants (mostly because people are dirty), public toilets (ditto) and outside in the wild of course, nitrogen being so good for plants and vegetable gardens ;-)...I'm teaching my kid to pee sitted as well out of respect for my wife and my older daughter (when you're a kid, it's kind of fun to just go nuts in the toilets (no pun intented). It doesn't make him less of a boy...just a more polite and cleaner one.

Sometimes the seat position thing flares when I don't,. But I think making things convenient for women also makes them vulnerable to always thinking nature was put here for them. Like looking where you are putting you feet may be good for your continued health. If it is up. Probably the cleaner position. Yes I always check before I sit. I also have seen women miss the bowl. I'm a retired primary care physician with prostatism - currently weighing up which of the surgical options is best. Almost certainly there is no fixed answer to peeing posture - its every man for himself. Without doubt sitting to pee does not work for me, there is always a significant residual that emerges after standing. OTOH I have discovered a few tricks to minimise problems - whether others will find them useful or even if there is any anatomical or neurophysiological validity to them I cannot say. Privacy - use a cubicle in a public loo or close the door if at home. Patience - if it takes 2 or 3 minutes and several passings of a few mls - so what. Take your time and relax. Orbit the bathroom/bedroom/landing for a few minutes and try again. Legs astride and lean forward whilst resting on the wall behind the wc (if possible). This will relax the pelvic floor, taking the pressure off the urethra and somewhat straightening it too. Don't push and strain. This simply impedes flow and may have adverse effects on the bladder. RELAX!!! If you're aware of some residual that does not want to emerge on its own try what is, in effect, the same action as an ejaculation - several times. The innervation of the male urinary tract and the neurophysiology behind urination is complex but significant influences come from the sacral roots. For many years I have noticed benefit from light stroking/scratching of the sacral dermatomes at the top of the natal cleft. Visualisation of a waterfall - Skógafoss in Iceland works for me. Running a tap or the shower. Drawing myself up to my full height and very slightly extending neck and torso whilst tightening any actual or imaginary 'six-pack' - bit like having a stretch. Deep breath in helps too. Perhaps you could do a piece on the anatomy/neurophysiology of urination in men. Few will have considered it in depth. A comparison of the effects of the common surgical options on the situation would be good too. Something I have not seen discussed is the physical, psychological and, possibly, social effects of disruption of ejaculation after surgery. For almost all men this will be important and may be something they hesitate to discuss - you'd be hard pressed to find a man that does not enjoy ejaculating...

At 68, and having a debilitating hip injury, I began sitting (at home only!) at 50. I began having problems when urinating several years ago and after a terrifying experience of standing up and seeing blood and tissue in the bowl (turned out to be an infection from failing to completely empty my bladder), I vowed to find a way to empty my bladder. Remembering what a physician’s assistant told me, “people get older, and things move” (paraphrasing), I tried many things to get the urine moving better. By accident one day, I had pushed down with my left heel and suddenly felt a substantial increase in flow! I am guessing that that combination moved something out of the way or off of my urethra, and after years of no feeling due to low flow, I could not only feel the urine moving, I could hear the stream against the side of the bowl! Not that my story will solve anyones problem in this area, it makes a lot of sense to keep trying everything until you find the right combination.

For a second I thought holy cow, something else is going wrong! Then, wait a minute, I remember that feeling! My doctor is going to love this story at my next appointment. Have a good week!

As a male nurse I can assure you that nurses in the hospitals in the US wish more men would be willing to sit to pee. We often have to help patients that are unstable on their feet either from anesthesia or old age. Some men refuse to pee sitting down and trying to help them stand is difficult and dangerous for them and the nurse. Trying to keep someone upright, with the urinal correctly positioned is no easy task. Walking them to the toilet is also not safe and you’re guaranteed to have to clean the toilet and surrounding area afterwards.

Anyway, I can definitely say it's better for me 😁

Hey dude...mind if I ask you a question? I have some of the same issues you have. I've had kidney stones multiple times and even had surgery to remove a stuck one 4 years ago. I also had a huge bladder stone that I had to be operated on to remove 2 years ago. I also suffer from inflamed and tight pelvic floor muscles (which can be agonizing in a flare up) as well as other muscle issues which leads to burning and painful peeing. Why do you find it easier to sit? For me, I find it easier to stand because obviously, you have to kind of push it down to urinate when sitting but more important it's as if sitting for me puts MORE pressure on the pelvic muscles. It's kind of like when I'm standing I also need to use my leg muscles which alleviates, to a degree the pressure and use of the pelvic floor muscles.

Like some other commenters, I sit down because it makes less of a mess around the toilet. I lived alone in a house with two toilets, and I used to sit down in the master toilet when I got up to pee in the middle of the night. but stood up in the downstairs toilet. When I cleaned the floors one day, it was obvious that a lot of pee splashes out on the floor in the downstairs toilet, but the upstairs toilet area was much cleaner. So I began to sit down all the time at home, and now I only pee standing up in restaurants or other public toilets. And as I'm now in my mid-70s, I do find that it is easier to empty my bladder when sitting down.

I have heard that urinating while standing increases the risk of prostate cancer, but I do not know if that is true. I think it will be safe to use the urinal sometimes when it comes to the prostate. Every time I ever heard a male talk about standing verses sitting, it was painfully clear that he associated sitting with women and being gay. Therefore, My assessment is simple. A man that fights for the right to satand at any cost with real vigour is likely insecure with his masculinity, sexist or homophobic or all three! REAL men don't leave a dirty toilet! and adult men don'tcreate a make work project when it's totally avoidable!

I am 28 years old and honestly can't remember when or why i transitioned from peeing standing to sitting, but its a 100% better peeing sitting, keeps the area clean, you don't have to lift up/down the toilet seat lid, and flow is really nice and uninterrupted.

I think it depends on your environment. As I prefer to pee either outside in the back yard or in the shower, I found sitting down more awkward than just standing.

I'm 60 and I started sitting to pee many years ago while on vacation staying with friends. Having to pee half asleep at 2am made it difficult to not miss the toilet. I didn't want to leave a messy bathroom. Then I realized how much pee you can't see that splashes out of the toilet onto the floor. So I pee sitting down at home too for cleanliness. However, I see a urologist and he keeps an eye on my prostate (or should I say a finger lol) because I take a long time to pee and don't fully empty my bladder when I do. It's more comfortable to sit down when you're going to be there for a while. So, I pee sitting down at night and in the day I sit and stand sometimes to avoid hemroids. I always stand when using public toilets. Hope this wasn't TMI.😅

Great videos. Having an over extended bladder, I find I need the extra help from gravity to fully empty my bladder. So standing is the only way to pee for me. Sitting seems to prevent me from starting or emptying my bladder. Thank you for what you do.

The only time I sit is if I have to poop the same timed as I pee. Occasionally when I relax the muscles to pee it relaxes all the control muscles so I have to sit to avoid a problem. This doesn't happen often but it happens.

I am a male in his mid-40s. I have been sitting to urinate since my late teens mostly for hygienic reasons. I have never had any kidney or urinary issues save for one isolated kidney stone episode. I only stand to pee when I am in a very busy public restroom, and I definitely notice that peeing while standing NEVER gets all the urine out no matter how long you shake, wait or squeeze. Sitting is truly the best way to do it. It’s a shame that some weak-minded men think it threatens their masculinity to pee while sitting. Grow up!

I leaned to pee-seat in my early 20s, decades ago, for sanitary reasons. During the short time that it takes me to empty, I acquired the habit of deep breathing (about 3 to 5). Pee-standing, compared to this is idiotic and useful only when out in the bushes. Thanks, Doc. Malik, for confirming my manly habit.

I learned a long time ago if for no other reason A - it keeps the bathroom and toilet cleaner to sit B - keeps the wife and daughters happy because the toilet seat is always down and C - I am a guy and I don’t have to prove anything to anyone by standing to pee except for when I am out in the woods. 😂

Tried squatting on my toes on floor catching in container (great fruit tree fertilizer) , yesterday first time. Excellent for thorough emptying bladder, no dripping. . Happy and dry, thank you. Rena - I agree. I was having issues peeing. I thought it was a prostate issue, but it turned out to be a plevic floor issue, where my Pelvic Floor muscles were too tight causing me to trickle pee as well as have the last of the pee escape as I got up from peeing. Turned out a few simple stretch exercises solved my issue. However, when I was doing research nothing I did a search on told me it was a pelvic floor issue and everything seemed to tell me that either I had Prostate issues and/or bladder issues (which isn't true). Most of the issues towards men with pelvic floor are directed at erection issues when you may have zero issues with erection but still have pelvic floor problems like I did. BTW - I sit to pee unless at a public bathroom with a urinal. Mostly because I clean the toilets in my house and it is more sanitary to sit down to pee.

I can say that it is actually way more difficult to pee in the plank position. I was in a confined space once and needed to pee in a bottle using gravity so had to plank while peeing. I am not sure if it was physiologically more difficult to pee but I am guessing it is harder to pee when your muscles are contracted.

@@balancedactguy I was in a confined space its the only way. Peeing sideways will result in the bottle filling and leaking out as there often insn't much room between your thigh and the ground. peeing while planking is easier than peeing on your side if you are peeing into a bottle and you need all the bottle you can get for bladder volume.
