For the last 5 years on my own I've been taking an OTC antihistamine just to stay decongested ; PCP knew this. At 70, my PCP also knew I was having some urination issues and BHP. She never told me the antihistamine might be a problem! Since hearing Dr. Rena in this topic, I stopped the antihistamine and my urination has improved. Thanks! Dr. Rena! I have no other health issues; 5'10", 156, good BP, etc. My PCP means well, but she gives me my 15 minutes once a year, her head in her computer and almost never looks at me and says, "hey, how are you"? State a medicine today; she means well, but you have to be your own medical consultant.

@ssa8479 5 ай бұрын
That's become typical in the past 15 years or so. The doctor talks to the computer, not to you. And you're lucky you get 15 minutes. At the clinic I go to, you're in and out in under 15 minutes, including 7-8 minutes with the doctor. The nurse takes your weight and BP, doesn't care if it's winter and you're weating boots and a winter coat, or it's summer and you're in shorts and a T-shirt. I go twice a year, in June and December, and for the latter the doctor says "you've put on weight." The nurse takes BP with me sitting on the examination table with my arm sticking out because they have done away with chairs. All of that is against what the American Heart Association advises, and I've pointed it out to the doctor, but he doesn't care. Ever since corporations have taken over what used to be a doc or two sunning a family practice, it's all about efficiency, quick turnaround, treat the symptom, write a prescription and move on to the next patient. Remember, the doctors are now employees, not independent practitioners. Educate yourself, and don't hesitate to say no to a med if you feel it's wrong for you.

A lot is outdated information. The right fed is what our body and especially our Brain needs ! Cocosfed and flaxseed for cooking and Virgin Olive Oil on salad. This is what it’s best for us. The rest is oil we should avoid 2:17 . Tomato is still correct. Meat from wild animals or at least grassfed organic meat is totally different for our body then from supermarked. You have to update your knowledge. This old believes we did learn on University before, actually makes people more sick. We know today, there are no fruit or vegetables who can cure us, but we get sick because we get far too much poison in our food and environment, and too little minerals and vitamines. The absence of minerals and certain bacteria in our gut is making us sick. Illnes is not something falling down from heaven. We create our illness with wrong industrial food. In my early 40's I went vegetarian and insisted on lots of dairy for the protein I thought I needed. Over the years my prostate symptoms grew worse and worse with slow stream and "multiple voiding" my dominate symptoms. About 10 years later I went 100% plant based and stopped the diary. Unexpectedly, my prostate symptoms began improving somewhat and multiple voiding faded away though slow stream (slower than my youth) remains. I was pleasantly surprised to have no further prostate symptom increase over the following 20 years, now at age 74. I'm convinced it was growth hormones either in or produced by the dairy consumption that caused my prostate growth.

I cannot be sure whether it was the drugs given to the cows or cow milk in general. Since cow milk is designed to rapidly grow a calf into a cow, diary simply has more growth factors than I care to ingest. I don't consider myself as "vegan" but choose to eat very simple starch based foods. Until recently, my garden provided about 25% of all our calories in the form of potatoes, sweet potatoes, field corn and dry beans. I certainly enjoy the benefits of great health with no hint of chronic disease nor any required medications - unusual for an American man at age 74. @@danwipper

My Father made it to 86. Had an enlarged prostate in his 60's. They operated on it. Granular tissue developed later. In his last 3 years needed a catheter because of not holding his urine. After 2 UTI's with recovery he said no more. Before the 3 rd UTI he fell and broke his hip. I use his experience as a reference. Only other issue was high BP of which he did not really die from. Kidneys, Liver, Lungs, Stomach, Heart, Brain all in good shape upon death. He was quite a Gardener and loved vegetables, and Burger king to.👍 Great video. It is important to track family history.

Whole carbs are what the body needs for longevity. Animal products shorten lifespan. Science. Food intake patterns and 25-year mortality from coronary heart disease: cross-cultural correlations in the Seven Countries Study. The Seven Countries Study Research Group -A Menotti et al. Eur J Epidemiol. 1999 Jul. Baseline surveys were carried out between 1958 and 1964. A number of individual characteristics were measured in 12,763 middle-aged men belonging to 16 cohorts in seven countries (USA, Finland, The Netherlands, Italy, former Yugoslavia, Greece and Japan). Population death rates from CHD showed large differences, ranging from 268 per 1000 in East Finland to 25 per 1000 in Crete, Greece. Animal food-groups were directly correlated, and vegetable food-groups (except potatoes) as well as fish and alcohol were inversely correlated with CHD mortality. Univariate analysis showed significant positive correlation coefficients for butter (R = 0.887), meat (R = 0.645), pastries (R = 0.752), and milk (R = 0.600) consumption, and significant negative correlation coefficients for legumes (R = -0.822), oils (R = -0.571), and alcohol (R = -0.609) consumption. Combined vegetable foods (excluding alcohol) were inversely correlated (R = -0.519), whereas combined animal foods (excluding fish) were directly correlated (R = 0.798) with CHD death rates.

i started having BPH systems in my late 30's...and I totally blame it on ant histamines. I was taking allergy medicine regularly since i was a child because my seasonal allergies are pretty bad. I was taking claritin and Zyrtec almost throughout the year. At one point, i started to have RLS-like systems (restless leg syndrome), and the BPH systems at the same time. My doc at the time thought i was just diabetic, but i wasn't then, i'm not now, and i don't have hypertension, but the cholesterol could be lower. But at the time, i was told to get off the allergy medicine, and that immediately stopped the RLS systems. But the BPH issues remained. Learning years later that antihistamines interact with the prostate was upsetting as i do believe they were cause of onset of BPH for me.

Plant based diet here. I started eating or drinking 1/2 cup twice a day of Hunt's pasta sauce and my PSA dropped from 4.18 down to 3.20 a 23% reduction in less than 2 months. The only issue I have is the 4 gm of sugar per half cup serving so I recently bought a 50 mg lycopene supplement to cut back on the sugary pasta sauce. My urine flow did seem to improve.

What brand supplement? I was looking in Vitamin Shoppe and all they had was 10mg concentrations and it was quite expensive! I had seen a study that used a whopping 500mg of lycopene so I was looking for a high concentration product. However, Im thinking such a product may not even be cost effective if 10mg was ~$45.00.

No word yet on carnivores having obstructive urinary symptoms. There is a huge and growing community and they do little else but report on their health status. One of the many problems with dietary studies -aside from what you already mentioned - is that they dont control for all the variables. They compare plant based to omnivore but never include a carnivore cohort. So red meat is added to plant based, but plants are never excluded from the experiment. Much has been learned and disclosed about the toxicity of the plants in our modern diet, both natural and that introduced by farmers and geneticists.

Diet and exercise always seems to be the key. Living in Florida/The South, one almost has to mainline 'antihistamines' to be able to breath. I have an upcoming visit with my Urologist, I'm going to suggest he watch this because he's never given such good information for preventive medicine.

Sadly, doctors can earn more by prescribing something rather than suggesting lifestyle changes. Then you also have the problems that patients think they are ”customers”. Fat acceptance people don’tlike doctors that ask about their weight. Should you mention BMI, they will go elsewhere. That acronym is very taboo

Dr. Malik Can you discuss PAE? I had this procedure done over a year ago with great success. I'm aware of all the other procedures available for BPH. I know the urologic community is slow to adopt this treatment. Can you discuss this treatment in a future video. Thanks
@herrickinman9303
@herrickinman9303 5 ай бұрын
PAE is performed by an interventional radiologist, not by a urologist. There is no procedure that cures BPH. Your prostate will continue to grow after the procedure, and you eventually need another procedure in about 10 years.
@garyyencich4511

I agree. A urologist may not perform this procedure but would certainly be expected to be familiar with pros and cons of all available treatment methods, providing referrals as appropriate. Since this is an educational channel (and a pretty good one) such a discussion would be welcome.

I agree, and had the same. Unfortunately she was off on her meat aspect. It was insulin resistance (from sugar, carb, processed food and seed oils) that caused the enlarged prostate, and once you get that reversed so will the prostate issue.

Similar story here. I eat fats and lots of protein and veggies but almost ZERO added sugars (almost three years now) and exercise every day, all the metabolic risk factors disappeared. Fats and healthy red meat are not a problem without empty carbs/added sugar. It’s kind of annoying that medical professionals always lump fats/red meat in with sugar, and the studies never seem to account for sugar. Just eliminating sugar resulted in the best health of my life at over 50 years old.

I have the same experience. Carbs are the issue, over time leading to insuline resistance. Solution is to get your energy out of fats instead of carbs. The doctor mentioned diabetics and blood sugar level, but missed the link with carbs.

Also my testosterone level is good for my age, I am 35, not too low or too high just perfect. I do not know what to do. Regarding diabetes as a risk, at what A1C level does the risk begin? I'm a 69 year old man who has been a diabetic for about 30 years. I maintain an A1C of from 5.0 to 5.3. I have no symptoms of diabetes. No neuropathy. No retinal damage. No heart problems. No kidney problems. I'm still sexually active and have a normal sized prostate gland. This indicates to me that there is a threshold below which no damage is done. What is that number or range of numbers?
