Collecting sneakers in your 40s is only stupid if you’re spending money you don’t have. If you can afford it, and you like it, age should not be a factor. I’ve noticed that as I’ve gotten older, I’m more aware of the types of sneakers I end up wearing so I focus on those rather than buying hyped pairs.

I'm 48. I remember as a kid in a low income family looking at all my MJ posters on my wall. I knew I'd never own those Black Cement 3s. But who knew they would retro those things almost 4 decades later! I have most of the shoes right now because A. I love them & B. Because that little boy in the 80s deserved more than Payless shoes that disintegrated in a couple months time. I'll keep collecting them until they put me in the ground. That being said, I have a bout 50 sneakers and thats about all I need. As I get new ones I give a pair away I haven't worn in awhile or sell them on the cheep.

Exactly, capping around 50 is good! For me though, the number is roughly 10, I have felt. I will probably go upto 20, if I fall in love with something in the way. But again being 34 and an Indian all sneakers don't suit me and so I consciously avoid buying the pairs which I won't wear. I do have a two cheap sneakers for being complete beaters but for the rest, I keep them healthy. 😅😅

It’s not stupid at all. We the over 40 crowd are the original buyers of these of Jordan’s. We lived it and experienced it live as it was happening. So to see Jordan brand continue to release those of classics and being able to buy those now is something truly special. Special to us because we weren’t all able to buy those when we were young. Jordan’s are still a staple in the culture and remains trendy in some form or fashion for even the young heads. So if anybody should be getting their hands on some it would most definitely be us. Not to mention life is short . Buy what you want . Live, love , laugh!

From a 45 year old with about 150 in current collection, I agree with your thoughts. People collect coins, comics, cards, cars, etc. Ultimately things that bring joy. If you're financially stable, who cares about what others think on how you spend your "fun" money. I went out with the Mrs last night and we dropped $200 on a fancy dinner. I'll poop that out later tonight. Friends will judge me for spending $200 on "another" shoe I'll have for years in great condition but will not judge as harshly a fancy dinner that costs the same

I love this video - such a great and balanced take from someone who really gets it. With every hobby under the sun there will be people who don’t get why in the hell you’d do that. Some people run marathons, some people cover themselves in tattoos, and some people by infinity sneakers. We have a saying in my my family “don’t yuck somebody’s yum” and so if people think sneaker collecting is stupid they should keep quiet, move on, and not collect sneakers. Like what you like, and leave people alone!

I'm 44, been into Basketball sneakers since highschool (90s) as I hooped back then, but only really started collecting since 2015-16 (Thanks to the Ultraboost). I look around my sneaker-room/office nowadays and, like you said, the sheers numbers of boxes in there is starting to bum me out abit. I am working on thinning out the herd, and focus only on Reebok (those were my aspirations back in HS) and Ultraboosts, as I usually wear nothing but. Thanks for being the sounding board for us old sneakerheads mate! Keep up the amazing work.

I feel it's good for people to have a passion for something, and I generally don't pull punches if someone tries to mock me for being a 40 year old with a home studio and a semi expensive gaming PC. £550 on a graphics card? You betcha! I love having a space that I can let go of the daily monotony and tough stuff (young child, dealing with work). Whether it's a wall full of sneakers, a room full of video games or DVDs, drilling holes in your walls to stick panels to make your space not sound like a cave, or racks of synthesisers, having something that isn't a person that brings you joy is fucking delightful.

Sneakers help me complete my look and gives me a new sense of confidence; clothes, shoes, cologne… are all investments into yourself and I’d say absolutely worth it if you can budget it without being irresponsible. I only have a single pair I won’t wear, simply because I plan on wearing it for something specific due to the value it holds for me. Not money wise but both in what the shoe is, and my own history with it and how I was given it. 😊 Edit: I seriously recommend investing in custom insoles for your feet, ones that are custom made and formed to your foot. I just take out my insoles and rotate the custom orthotic to whatever I wanna wear, it completely fixes 90% of shoes being uncomfortable and upgrades comfortable ones to a new level!

But I’ve always enjoyed collecting art you can wear. Over the past 4 years I’ve shifted more of my focus to NFTs aka digital art. But I’m always gonna be a sneaker fan. And it’s been cool to see these two hobbies intertwine and NIke being at the forefront of an emerging technology. I say if you like it and it makes you happy then go for it regardless of age. I don’t have a massive collection but still a collection and I wear them all. It brings me back to when I was a kid getting the new Allen Iverson sneaker every year, and I cherish those memories watching my favorite players growing up. If my collection gets too hefty I’ll sell off some ones I don’t use as much. I buy sneakers because I like them, not because I’m searching for compliments, but I have gotten more compliments than I would have expected and had quite a few nice interactions with people just based on the sneakers I was wearing. It’s a nice feeling when you discover you share a common interest with someone. Personally, I wouldn’t want to give up on something that brings positivity to my life just because I got a little bit older. Love your videos brother, keep doing your thing

I keep my collection under about 175 pairs and I know how ridiculous it feels at times. I go through every emotion in this video. I really only rock a few pairs these days but I’m still stocking like an idiot. I still love it though. It’s made me money as much as it’s cost me. Well, maybe not as much as it’s cost me. Haha.

Such a relatable video and articulated where I’m at perfectly. I’m 48, can’t see myself stopping buying shoes and I always grab the beaters when popping out especially if I haven’t looked at the weather forecast 😂

48 year old here. This episode hit 100%. Wifey is going to laugh her ass off at the truth. But for real, if we weren’t in an okay position in life I might be tripping a bit. I’ve pulled back over the years, but I’ll never stop. I love the game!

i think the biggest factor is your motivation- are you genuinely passionate about the art of sneakers or do you just want popularity from classmates/coworkers/strangers online. most of the people that are tapped into sneaker youtube/reddit/forums etc. genuinely care... however its rather easy to tell when someone just wants it for the clout

I'm closer to 50 than 40 and the number of pairs that I own (and wear) is closer to 50 than 40. I feel like this brings a sense of balance to my life 😊 Great video. I think you've hit the nail about collecting in general.... sneakers are 'just' another thing to collect that can bring joy - it just so happens that you can wear 'em and sell them on if you want.

42. It's all about the chase. Sweet dump of endorphins when you snag a hard to cop shoe... Then it just sits with the rest. That said, I've noticed that my patterns have changed as well. I enjoy the comfortable functional stuff but still enjoy having exclusive stuff. So it's a lot of collab NB, Solomon, Saucony, Adidas, and Asics stuff. If I don't hit on retail, I never chase. It's become easier for me to let go of shoes I don't get a W on. Slowly fading out of the game and I'm okay with it. Just like most of you guys, I have enough shoes to last me 2 lifetimes before I'd actually "need" a pair.

Great post. At 51 years old I definitely have moments where I ask myself "What the f*ck am I doing?" The thing is, I still truly enjoy the process, the community and the joy I get from acquiring a new pair. It doesn't stop being fun just because you're a bit older. These days I just focus on tracking down grails and trading away multiple "mid-level" pairs to build a more curated collection.

Being 49 years and going through major life changes for about a year does put a lot of perspective on things. Sneakers to me still catch my eye but no longer excite me. My shoes I’ve collected in the last 25 years is just a constant reminder of who I’m not anymore. The same goes with all the other hobbies around that time it’s just the reality of it all. I’m about to hit 50 and I want to be mobile, I don’t want to be bound to materialistic things.

Regards everyone! During my late 30’s early 40’s I achieved to complete a 400+ pairs sneakers collection and it took me 6-7 years to sell each and everyone pair… now I’m 52 and for the last three years I’ve started again a very small selective collection that is now around 65 pairs and there’s a few that I haven’t wear in months. A very basic collection I must say, runners (air max 1 the most) and J’s from 1 to 13… and I feel satisfied because I can sell some to my friends and give away to my elder boy who is now 11 years old and just one size smaller than myself… I do wear most of them but honestly, having even 30 pairs is a bit absurd… well you can wear a different pair the whole month every day but you are obligated to care about the rest of the outfit and, living in Finland, most of all, the weather 😅 thanks! Blessings!✌🏽😎

Thank you for articulating the sentiments of sneaker collecting. It was spot on and felt objective. We understand it could be impractical. For the pairs I don't actually wear, I view similarly to art collecting. The shoes make us feel something by just looking at them.

My grandmother is one of the most economically sensible women and is constantly scolding me for my purchases. The one thing she never bother me about is buying sneakers because she says “you have to wear them everyday and you want to be comfortable so you don’t have problems later on”. That’s the only justification I’ve ever needed. To be fair I’m only early 30s but since I’ve been doing it since a teenager definitely starting to feel more like and OG even in what I choose to buy lol.

I'm (41) from the Middle East so sneaker culture (for the most part) wasn't and still isn't a thing over here, I never had sneakers growing up. However all of that changed once I started making my own money, and with apps like stockx (pre-selling fakes) and Goat, it made buying sneakers a lot more convenient. I've slowed down a lot over the years, today I've got a healthy collection of around 30 sneakers and shoes ranging from Jays to Adidas to Maison Margielas, MSCHFs and other brands.

At 56 I was around when Adidas and Pony’s were far superior to a company called Nike. We didn’t even know how to say it. It was a one syllable word to us. Then this guy from my hometown who was 4 grades ahead of me got his own sneaker line on Nike and that company took off. In 1985 those first shoes in his line, simply called Air Jordan’s ( no number) took off and my friends and I on my college campus were wearing them. I don’t double up and I try to wear as many of my 300 pairs as I can.

Sometimes its enjoyable to just own things, and know theyre there. We're simple creatures and it doesnt have to be any deeper than that. As long as youre able to collect without casuing yourself financial issues, go for it. We aren't here for a very long, so find your hapiness where ever it may be.

But I’m still buying shoes cause I love it. Sneaker collecting is a hobby. It is what it is! 🤷🏾‍♂️

I’m 49 and have a healthy collection. And I 100% agree that the shoes that are my go-to’s are usually the comfy dad shoes and the Jordans, Foams, Air Max 1’s usually sit, still in the box. Like others in the comments, I grew up poor and couldn’t afford many of the good sneakers as a kid. Also, my sneaker collection has helped me financially, whether to get me through rainy days or to supplement on leisure and umm…better sneakers. Sometimes, people need to shut the hell up and mind their own damn business. Besides, there are worse hobbies to have. 😂 Love the vid and keep holding it down for us old(er) sneakerheads! ✊🏿

I'm almost 44, so I grew up with MJ and the rise of sneaker culture in the 80's and 90's. I still collect sneakers, mostly Jordans, but I'm selective with what I buy these days. Too many models and too pricey. I've been a sneaker head since the late 80's, having gotten my first pair of Nikes in 1989 and my first pair of J's in 1992. At this point in my life sneaker collecting is just childhood nostalgia.

I'm 43...a few years ago i sold any and every pair i rarely wore. In recent years I've changed from a sneakerhead to a sneaker enthusist. I buy whatever I like heat or not. And once I don't feel the same love I once did for a pair and I rarely wear them...I sell them. So I went from hundreds of pairs to now maybe 15. Once they leave the rotation I sell.

Sneakers at a young age was all about not being able to afford much. That's why comparing shoes with friends was fun. But as an old man, sneakers are easy to attain, and it's weird af when an old dust is trying to relive their youth and even try to compare the latest drop with the youth. It doesn't work anymore. But most of yall will go on in denial and will never admit what it is. But everyone wants to feel important so there you go.

I began collecting more than a few pairs of sneakers at a time more because it was outside the norm back in the late 90’s, early 00’s. I connected with a smaller community of people who enjoyed them and the culture behind them and to see where everything has gone today, 20+ years later is a bit sad. I’m commenting on a video commenting on two people 20+ years apart, arguing over whether I’m an idiot for having a ton of sneakers. I worshipped the athletes I grew up watching as a kid, and those were the first athletes with signature shoes and a culture of consumerism. I’ll never stop collecting, and my bigger take away is that we’ve micromanaged the culture to the point that “Not Tripping” has an audience to start this conversation. Wear, collect, do what you like! As long as it isn’t harming others or putting you and your family in a disadvantaged position (that’s a debilitating addiction lol) then enjoy yourself! The world needs more people ENJOYING their lives instead of using the internet as a giant fence to cast aspersions over 🙄

I have a little bit of a different take on all this as i see it being every ds pair is pure joy and happiness just being owned and viewed visually as you stated very well, when you want a super concentrated dose of joy or are in need of inspiration you can actually wear whatever pair you decide and can repeat this process as many times as wanted, as needed , as possible.

I decided that im done with sneakers a few months ago (actually found out through therapy that i literally have a shopping addiction). Got it down to less than 20 pairs. I realized that i really only wear crocs and boots at this point. Getting old sucks, as your body just gets too demanding and staying healthy is more important than flossing
