The term “social justice” has varying modern connotations, both good and bad. But where did the concept come from, and what did it originally mean? Mary FioRito explains how social justice originated in Catholic social teaching as a way to describe the optimal balance of individual liberty and the common good for society.
* * * * *
As always, the Federalist Society takes no position on particular legal or public policy issues; all expressions of opinion are those of the speaker.

The government already does, believe it or not. The DOT enforces 10-30% of the work/jobs be given to “disadvantaged” companies aka minority-owned companies. That is government-enforced discrimination! Not only that, it doesn’t solve racism, it only creates a handful of wealthy minority individuals. (And, why are minorities “disadvantaged”? Are they less capable? Or is the presumption that white People won’t hire minorities? BOTH premises are prejudiced!)

Social justice can be good of course. The problem with SJW's is the "warrior" mindset. Social justice can be debated on the merits, causes for discrepancy, and how or if to solve the issue. Once you interject the "warrior" into it is when everything falls apart. The warrior isn't interested in others views, only crushing them. The warrior is not interested in compromise, only inciting the mob. The warrior wants not only to win the argument, but to destroy you, your livelihood by getting you fired, your feeling of security by doxing you, your social life by harassing anyone who would interact with you in a friendly manner. There is no common ground to be found, no reason to be appealed to, only raw feelings that will lead to escalating violence and suffering for all.

Oh No no no no. You dont get to claim Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr King was for Justice, not social Justice. Infact, social justice goes against Dr. Kings core ideas of judging based on content of character rather than color of skin, this is something social justice not only doesnt do, but actively fights against. Dr. King would rail against social justice if he could, because he is for justice without any stupid add-ons or asterisks.

@Hellig Usvart the video itself is irrelevant. I just wanted to correct them on Dr. King because I absolutely hate when privileged millenials tarnish his legacy by claiming he would support social justice. Dr. King gave many speeches where he actively railed against race based equity.

It isn't justice if it requires an adjective to distinguish itself. And only injustice masquerading as something good would need to do that.

SJWs do not merely disagree with the Church's social justice concept. They oppose it. The two different views of social justice are chasms apart and mutually exclusive. Side with SJWs at your liberty's peril.

First off, there's nothing wrong with fighting injustices. If there's one thing good about SJW's, they're fighting causes we all should be fighting. Unfortunately, many of them lean very liberal. But where's everyone else who should also be advocating for social justice? That's the problem, we're letting the far left and the media dictate the conversation. And now many just want to say "shut up you SJW!" To move forward, we need to define what social justice is, which unfortunately the commentator left out a lot, and see it as something that's good. Then advocate for change where it's needed. There are so many unjust laws in the US, but what social justice does is it corrects those laws that'll make recognizing individual rights and practicing individual justice possible.

@@Montfortracing The ability of men to identify injustices is not lacking. What separated the Good Samaritan from other passersby was that he righted the wrong done to a traveler. Similarly, while there are groups who identify & take up worthy causes, I will refuse to label their remedy efforts "justice" where the outcome is the exact opposite. Explicitly, any so-called SJW program whose goal is the marxist dismantling of liberalism, capitalism, and individualism is working for the opposite of what Americans call "justice."
@Montfortracing
@Montfortracing 4 жыл бұрын
@@josephalbatross5961 well, we don't want to have Marxism creeping into our American polity, you are right about that. Yet, I think it's that time Americans need to re-examine those three values you mentioned because those three values are some of the reasons we've had many injustices in this country. As one British writer once said "the reason there's socialism is because of capitalism". We can still have an America without the three values mentioned above, and they desperately need to be replaced. I'll try to provide a replacement value for each three, even though there're several. Liberalism needs to be replaced by a philosophy that actually respects the dignity and whole of all human beings, and not just only focus on individual rights or just the presumption of liberty. Capitalism needs to be replaced by a more cooperatist economy where the most ownership of capital exists. This is not socialism because socialism dismantles private property in place of government action. And individualism needs to be replaced by a more holistic communitarianism, not like the ones of the old stupid Fabian societies.

@Velokid93 I did see that Verdict episode. Let all men *welcome* any sensible, left-leaning voices to join in social justice causes. That is, temperamentally, the benefit of having a "Left." Still, the holy triumvirate of Equality, Inclusivity, and Diversity. Such things are a clue that a rogue, radical agenda is being pursued that will cannibalize justice, not increase its social reach.

@@Montfortracing I appreciate your thoughts deeply, thank you for engaging. I wouldn't be opposed to hearing much, much more on the counter-culture you are suggesting. I delight in duty, charity, and sacrifice at the personal level, but certain assumptions have to be baked-in, e.g. private property. Do you believe righteous living can be advocated for at the systems level?

2:47 is basically saying "All Lives Matter"... That's not what SJWs, Antifa, BLM, and Leftists agree with. I don't like the video because it starts with SJW rather than only speaking on social justice as a topic. If you seek to educate someone on the matter but can't delineate between the two that is problematic.

The problem with language is, no matter how you interpret something, there is always another interpretation. It's not as surface level as the name. Many bad things have been done in the name of good. You have to look at each individual situation, not just an overarching phrase.

People conflate fairness and justice. Justice is the hard line, ruthless application of fact to mete out consequences and rewards. Fairness is taking into account circumstances and human elements like intent, to judge APPROPRIATE consequences and rewards to each case. As we currently live in pre-civil societies the world over, it's in our interest to recognize that we have never seen a society that can deliver justice or fairness. That we are working our way through this problem is an indication of growth and progress. Social justice is a code word for the deep and true intuition that there are things that are wildly unjust about all the systems in the world that deliver consequences and rewards. Accidents of birth are by far the most common way societies distribute these. That is utterly irrational and as unjust as it is unfair. If you have a brain and a heart you can't fail to notice that these systems need to be investigated and re-invented. That is both fair and just. If you have only one and not the other you will fall into one of the erroneous camps being argued in the comments below.
