One of the main disadvantages of sulfate-free shampoo is that it lacks foam, since sulfate is responsible for the thick foam and clean feeling that accompany the use of classic shampoos. That is why we often think that the more foam, the better the shampoo washes the hair.

...But what about the benefits of microstresses on the body in relation to small amount of SLS exposure in the average soap? The only reason I've seen so far not to use products containing SLS would be the adverse effects they have on people with dry skin conditions. I'm on the other end of the spectrum; the natural oils in my skin and hair clog my pores on a regular basis, and in my experience with sulfate-free products I'm left with extra oily skin/hair.

SLS completely destroyed my scalp. I've been suffering most of my life with itchy, flakey, inflamed scalp. Went to dermatologists, tried countless expensive shampoos, treatments... thought I had an autoimmune disease or seborrheic dermatitis. Then one day I randomly bought a shampoo bar because I needed to travel and had limited liquids allowance. And BOOM, after ONE SINGLE wash, my scalp wasn't itching anymore, my hair didn't need ANY extra products to detangle or smooth them. I was shocked. So I checked the ingredients and the only thing that this shampoo didn't have, were SLS. Checked all my old shampoo bottles and ALL had it. So for me, SLS is the worst ingredient that caused me years of suffering, bleeding scalp and destroyed and friend my hair. It's a perfect thing too - 95% shampoos use it, so you need to buy more products to counteract the damage (like hair masks, anti-dandruff shampos, hair treatments, etc...). Won't be using anything with SLS ever again!
