I'll confess, seeing this movie so soon after my parents kicking me out was... emotional. I cried in the theater. I thought I was reaching thinking she might have been trans, and.. was willing to accept she was an amazing ally. Art is amazing.

The thing I love about the idea of Gwen being trans is that it makes all of the sad moments sadder, such as her losing Peter, who would have been one of the people who was likely to accept her, and it also adds more reason for her to have gone to the spider-society, and for her to become closer with Hobie (spider-punk), because let's face it, Hobie don't care about things like gender. This video also expanded my understanding of the film making behind across the spider-verse. So thank you, Yukko!

Small thing but, when Gwen is in Miles' room, she grabs one of his action figures and says she used to have them as a kid. She used a gender neutral term to refer to herself as a child and she indicated she had boy's toys. Like most other things, it doesn't have to mean anything, but it always stuck out to me as a possible indicator that she could be trans.

Came down to the comments to see if anyone else had mentioned this! Another small thing that I love is her wearing Hobie's shoes. It's the little details scattered throughout the movie that really make this reading of Gwen as trans ring as genuine to me.

@@celesteenglish8916 interesting! Obviously we all know she was wearing his shoes but I didn't read anything into it, other than "lets give Miles reasons to be insecure". One time I found a comment section that was denying this theory and all the comments were like: "Just because her uniform is the trans colors doesn't mean she's trans" "Just because she has a trans flag doesn't mean she's trans" "Just because X doesn't mean she's trans..." Every single comment was some iteration of "this one thing doesn't mean she's trans" but also each comment was pointing to a different thing. I mean, there's no evidence. There's things that could be used to theorize, but the reality of the situation is that marvel owns spider Gwen and she's canonically a born female woman. Head canon is okay as long as you don't run around claiming it's the truth.

I love it so much...even if it hurts so very much. My parents wont accept me they refuse, they hace been nasty, transphobic and horrible. Coming out to them was the most difficult thing i have ever done. I was 32 when i came out, i knew i was trans since i was 11 and i hid who i was because i was terrified of loosing them and now when i was on the verge of ending my life i had to transition and the thing i feared most...happened, i loat them... I may not be trans, But I know what it's like to be invalidated. I go by they/them and am afab. My dad *REFUSES* to use the pronouns I want to go by and still calls me a she/her. After trying to get him to understand or at least use the pronouns I want to be called by, and failing at every turn *ex, I started calling him a she/her, talked with him MULTIPLE times, Took him into a therapy sesh I had, Well quite a few. (my therapist doesn't use they/them when addressing me either.) and explaining how that makes me feel invalidated and that it feels like he's disrespecting me* I decided to buy a shirt that says "I'm just a They/them causing May/hem" to correct him for me. IDC if I have to wash it daily, I will wear it everywhere we go, he'll either be called a bigot, or he'll call me by they/them just so he doesn't get called a bigot. Either way, I've done all I can to get it across to him. He doesn't accept me, hell, he BARELY accepts I'm aroace

All of these hints flew over my head while watching the movie and I have to admit I went into this video expecting that people were just saying Gwen was trans because they wished for more representation and I was pleasantly surprised how much validity there was to the idea that Gwen was trans. I never identified with Gwen’s struggles but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. I’m a cis ally and I’ve always tried to understand what it’s like to be trans but it has always felt like I was out of reach from understanding. Right now I realize that it’s bold of me to assume that I could fully understand it, like assuming I knew what it was like be poor when I’ve been wealthy all my life. I suppose this makes me like Gwen’s dad, someone who dosen’t understand what the person they love is experiencing but still wants what’s best for them. Love the video Yukko, and to everyone else keep fighting for LGBTQ+ rights in anyway you can.

There's the common argument that you shouldn't change existing characters in media to different orientations and/or gender identities, and while I agree to an extent, this film is an easy exception since it's not in your fave lile with most shows and films where the intent is to cash out on it. These films are based around so many alternate dimensions with characters that are so obviously about taking their existing character and having them break out of their usual conventions, or in the words of Miles Morales, do their "own thing". Another aspect about Gwen being trans here is that it's, again, not in your face and not trying to be something to make money off of mentioning like a lot of other shows and films. In this film, it's something that's only really there if you relate to and/or notice it. The people complaining about it never would've noticed it if it was never pointed out to them since they would've been focused on other aspects of the film. God, I fucking love Gwen and this movie (and the first one too!).

Within weeks I found and now own a Ghost Spider suit modeled after her updated look from this film. I am proud to cosplay as Ghost Spider, although it has led to a handful of awkward moments. The best of which was at Dragon Con (Atlanta 2024) when I was waiting sans mask for a bathroom stall (suit reasons) near the signing hall and mutual shock occured as Danny Trejo vacated the one I was standing in front of. No words were exchanged.

A bit of nuance i feel is worth talking about is the fact that spiderman as a concept, is VERY easily paralleled by queer people. Highschooler/young adult villanized by media and police while either liked or indifference by the local community IN NEW YORK of all places... its very easy to see ourselves (queer people) in this character. Weather it be gwen, miles, peter... doesn't matter. As a kid who only knew he was different from everyone else, without a way to even conceptualize this, watching spiderman was an incredibly comforting thing. Back then it was the (absolutely perfect btw) Raimi spiderman, now i get to see myself in both gwen and miles. This is explained very textually in the first one, the mask is there for YOU to BE spiderman. Not to put yourself on their shoes. But to BE. Textual, or implied. Gwen being trans is canon for me. And honestly that's all i can ask for. Its not every day we can relate so freaking much to a character.

You don't need to make a character something to tell the story of that thing. She could be trans or not but it does tell the story of one regardless and that's more impressive.

I believe she is trans, yes there's all the allegories, but to me her character is proof enough. Throughout both movies she is confident in herself, in who she is, and what she can do, especially when compared to Miles and Peter who aren't sure of themselves. But in the second when she meets people more confident than her, she seeks acceptance from them. We see that while she knows who she is, she is concerned with how others see her and wanting to be accepted. This is a great allegory for the want to pass and be accepted as trans. Trans people can be so sure of themselves but still need the outside world to see them that way too. She feels the need to prove herself believing that if she doesn't than she isn't who she claims to be. Adding to the line of Gwen falling for spider man, she wants to prove that she isn't just a love interest, and is spider woman. I could go on but point is her character and character development is identical to a lot of trans people's personal story of wanting acceptance and wanting to be seen as their true gender. To not be misgendered and not seen as just some fetish. If she isn't/wasn't meant to be trans, than the writers unknowingly made a character and story that are a perfect representation to the trans experience, and I find that hard to believe. I only recently watched the movies and went into them thinking she is trans, and i found all the allegories and colors. But what struck me the most was her character, which I related to the most. Especially at the end where after the talk with her dad she realized she doesn't need the acceptance of others so long as she knows who she is, and she doesn't need the acceptance of everyone just the support of her friends and confidence in herself.

Trans, ally, whichever it is what is just as important is the message that pain is universal and all who experience pain need love. Gwen was experiencing a lot of it, her viewers do every day in their own ways, but at least she got some love from her father. A shame her viewers, her fans, even the folks that hate watch her, sometimes can't get those healing hugs. Wonderful breakdown of these scenes but I'll admit I got distracted because I swear to god I was hearing some Genshin music in the background. The music at 8:15 sounded like the "I pulled a QiQi" melody (yes I know its an actual melody in the game, but the fan song will always win out in my head) so it was a fun whiplash to hear your excellent breakdown of such a emotionally raw scene only for my own brain to say "I pulled a QiQi, lost 50/50, at 90 pity..." Then again that form of pain, anguish, and dealing with results would mesh well with the moment you're commenting on so there's that. Those that play Genshin will have a "If you know, you know" feeling right about now.

Love this, cutting it all together hits like a truck. All the other things going on in the movie let you take in these things slowly as you process everything else as well. When hard focusing on Gwen's story arc through the film, it really does remove any doubt. Almost feel like you should take all the shorts and videos and compile it all into a feature film. Hell, that's basically how the entire RWBY franchise started after all.

my ADHD wouldn't let me focus on the words you were saying after the "father accepts daughter" bit because of the faint Genshin Impact music playing in the background. She could also be questioning herself and not fully within that decision of if she truly is or isn't as well. Gwen seems to have a lot of support systems in the movie verse so she could be exploring it as a possibility. Her body shape is something that ballet and gymnast tend to look like in their teens as girls or she could be a smaller framed male as well, further blurring the line. The flash back as well showing all the previous looks she had also supports that Gwen is very much discovering herself and has the room to try to do so. Personally I do think she is fully female and the writers and artist who worked on Gwen's parts put a bit of themselves in the story as a personal easter egg to anyone it could resonate with and in the end that it's not concrete either way is why the writing is so damn good in the movies so far.

My guess, she's an ally but not trans herself. Even with the evidence presented, I personally feel the allegories may be coincidences, perhaps happy accidents. Unless it's confirmed by the creators or Gwen herself, my interpretation shall remain as Gwen being an ally, and a very spectacular one at that.

I dont know if you read these. but I love your content, I also love spider-man and spider-gwen (ghost-spider). my gut reaction looking at your thumbnail was frustration because I didn’t agree. but I watched the whole video and I can see your points. I personally believe its an allegory but you can argue for or against. I think that the color themes of Gwen were their reasoning for the color palette they gave many of her scenes. her first comc and many after use the same style and colors. I think you can interchange her secret with any secret it doesnt need to be her being trans. I think this video was really refreshing because your not preaching to your audience that it is a fact that she is or isnt but its left to interpretation. I view it as an allegory but I can still appreciate a good video. great content as always 😊

I saw this movie with my best friend about a month I told my mom I'm trans. That conversation at the end hit me like a ton of bricks. After having discussed the miles side of the story, I turned to my friend and said, "So, Gwen is trans." And he said a simple, "Yep." We both love to write. He likes to lean towards characters, I lean more towards themes. We both understood the metaphors instantly. And the fact it's seemingly still "open to interpretation" infuriates me Thank you so much for this video. It felt vindicating

So I only cracked recently but hearing about how Gwen is hiding her identity from her parent because she’s the monster they hunt is honestly something that made me cry for how real that is for me with my mother, the only parent I know, being hyper conservative. “I don’t know who I am anymore. I just know I can’t lose another friend” hey maybe don’t quote my literal breakdown before my egg breaking? You’re not wrong to say Gwen is hyper relatable because at least for me it almost felt like you were just reading off my feelings on being trans. She’s fantastic and so are all of you. Yall stay cute and valid :3

Honestly, even if Gwen turns out to canonically not be trans, you could still argue that on a meta level, she is. Spider Gwen, as a character, is the result of the writers making Spider Man into a woman, of creating a female version of a male character. Call it a transition, if you will. And then they slapped the trans flag colour scheme on her.

An allegory is something like _Animal Farm_ where there isn't intended for there to be any "room for discussion" about what the story means. The farm is Stalinist Russia and that exactly what Orwell intended for it to be. Without that context, it's an obtusely told story about a tyrant who's a pig. Where there's supposed to be interpretive flexibility, that when a story is _applicable._ The _Matrix_ is a movie that has both of these things. It's a trans allegory, bit it also makes commentary on more things than just being trans so you didn't watch the movie wrong somehow or fail to understand it if you come away with it assuming it was about capitalism, post-modernism, cybernetics, etc.

I went through an identity crisis at about the time this film came out. Due to personal reasons I hadn't seen the film until a good long time after it had released. I had heard about the possibility that Gwen's story was an allegory for the trans experience, but paid little mind to it as I wanted to avoid spoilers. Just before this, I realized that I was transfemme and nonbinary, and came out to myself and select few friends. While questions about "should I come out to my family" hovered in my head, I went on avacation and by happenstance ended up watching this film on the plane. Gwen's scenes destroyed me. I picked up on the trans allegory instantly. The predicament she finds herself in presented direct parallels to the questions I was desperate to answer about my family's support, and the worst-case scenarios I was afraid of were illustrated in parts of this film. Luckily, when I came out to my family, they turned out to be fairly supportive, but all the while beforehand I was considering every possible scenario, and Gwen's story just happened to vividly portray both the best and the worst of what I could've expected from my experience with my own family. So I'm here to say: yes, to me, Gwen is trans, and the arc her father goes through might just be one of the best models for (potentially) prejudiced parents to adopt, assuming they pick up on the references.
