The online gambling industry has closed the books on another record-breaking year of regulated operations in the US.
In preliminary 2024 totals, licensed sportsbooks across 33 reporting markets combined to generate nearly $150 billion in handle and more than $14.2 billion in operator revenue. This report includes all published results to date and projections for months not yet reported.
Tax payments to state and local governments came to $2.90 billion, while the federal excise tax skimmed an additional $375+ million for Uncle Sam. More than 95% of all legal online sportsbooks for the year was conducted online.

Florida Hard Rock restarted Sport Book betting on 2023. Fan Dual and Draft King's are excluded. The Study you shown is disappointing for Florida. Brodie can I say this. There are a number of International Sports Books run by Government Licensed International Casinos. I used to use Bovada.l which is based in Canada. Since it is 100% legal for any person to make a sports bar legal gambeling. What makes it illegal is that the State can out-law it by making the booking illegal but it's not a crime if a person makes a sports wager. No matter your view for the States don't allow Sport betting it is still legal for State residents to place wagers on International Sport books. I know are people will always refer to the person making a legal bet illegal gambling but this isn't true. There are huge currency fees that go along with International Sports Books. When a person makes an International Wager that money leaves the country and never comes back. It doesn't get taxed by the IRS or State taxes. It doesn't come back to State or local Coffers either. It stays in the Country that hosts the Sports Books. No one knows how much International Sports takes in from the US. Again a person making bet isn't criminal and 100% legal so there is no transparency on what International Sports books make just from USA sports bettersand how much US currency is transferred out of the US to foreign countries that legalize sports books. I did the math. If just 1 million International Sports gamblers betted $25.00USD for 52 weeks thats $1.3 Billion dollars out of the USA. Nobody knows just how many gamblers there are from States that still outlaw it. Take 40-50 million betters on making $25 wagers for 52 weeks and its in the Trillions. How many bet $50 to $100 or more for 52 weeks? The sad part is State Governments that think that banning by Sport betting for the better good have no clue to the staggering amount of legalized betting on International markets.

Legalized sports betting has definitely impacted my ability to simply enjoy a broadcast without constant reminders about odds, props, etc. The constant bombardment has commoditized and tainted competition. I am especially sickened when a player is individually targeted on social media as a result of a miscue. Case in point was a recent photo of Mark Andrewa on a Barstool Sports FB post with the word “A$$” scrawled across it. Want to bet that wasn’t related to sports betting?

What is especially concerning to me is that so many outlets, channels and podcasters are now sponsored by online gaming companies. There are so few avenues where people can still analyze this trend critically because it affects their bottom line. Kudos to Brodie to talk about this and I hope you can avoid relying on their sponsorship so you can continue to do so.

In a word, yes. I would have found it inconceivable just 10 years ago that podcasts, for example, would have ad breaks sponsored by betting platforms. Money is already a challenge to hold on to, and now we're bombarded with ads inviting us to play with our hard earned, yet inflating, dollars.

Gambling can easily become an addiction. If you can't walk away, if you are chasing your losses, you need help. The average person does not advertise how much they lost out of shame, but that same person will tell everyone what they won out of pride when they win. If you are ever tempted, remember that you're only hearing one side of it. Gamble only what you can afford to lose, and don't expect to win. Casinos and sports books are built on the losers, not the winners.

Betting has become uncontrollable. Watch any sports channel and observe how sport betting is being pushed by advertiser. In the Bay Area it’s better bet that is being pushed. The issue is that underage youngsters are getting involved in betting, which can have serious consequences. There are videos on KZbin that address this problem in detail.

I find it nauseating. I know the income from these betting sites ads on sports podcasts helps the podcasters, but in the past year it has become almost impossible to listen to a podcast without the accompanying exhortation to patronize a betting site: complete with podcasters offering custom prizes for those listeners who sign onto their bet site advertisers. These betting sites have completely invaded any football media or broadcast.

It's very unlikely a prominent athlete would be involved because (unlike the Black Sox scandal) they are (rightfully) compensated way more fairly. The issue (as it was with Porter on the Raptors) is those borderline guys who don't make as much. The solution to match fixing (as experts like Dr. Declan Hill have pointed out) is paying athletes a fair wage.

Any business that can make 10% on selling or offering a service Always wins, Sports betting is not casino gaming, the house takes there 10% on avg per $1.00 bet, that's how the house wins, not because people lose ther bets, the house wins when people win also, seldom does the house take a hit on a win bet, thus why odds fluctuate,

Yeah, imagine trying to quit gambling in this gambling advertisement landscape with a bet just a few clicks away. It's one thing if you have to go somewhere to bet, it's an entirely different beast when all you have to do is pick up your phone. You don't even need to talk to anybody. I think it'd be nearly impossible to quit gambling, if you're addicted to it, and still enjoy watching your favorite sports. The temptation is so astonishingly strong and there's really not that much help. You'd have to constantly tell yourself no and all it takes is one weak moment and boom, you're back on the gambling train. With all of this gambling advertising it's almost assured that whenever an addict is feeling weak or impulsive there will surely be an ad for gambling that they'll see at that weak moment. Furthermore, all of the odds and gambling talk doesn't add much entertainment to the broadcast for people who don't gamble. I would definitely support stronger restrictions on gambling advertisements, though I wonder how much that would help. I didn't think gambling companies need support and protections for their business. Even if you think it should be legal, it's still a business model that takes money from people at an startling rate and the ones who primarily profit are the owners and tax collectors.

I've said it time and again, gambling is a dirty business, it always has been, and it makes everything it touches dirty. 150 billion...with a B. There are countries that don't have operating budgets that high. There will be a major scandal, most likely in football since that's the sport people most enjoy betting on. I've seen the damage a degenerate gambler can wreak on a family, worse than booze in my opinion (and yes, I am intimately familiar with how the bottle destroys lives). As Brodie points out, that's not even touching the off-the-books cash that's exchanged every week. These sports franchises have all made a deal with the devil. I used to bet through bookies and such, but I gave that up a long time ago. What these cozy relationships between leagues and gamblers does is bring the integrity of the game into question. That's a natural waste product like feces or any other digestive discharge. I'll continue to watch the games but when that scandal breaks, will there be a Babe Ruth to put Humpty Dumpty back together again? Or will the public simply stay away and look at it all as something akin to pro wrestling? Hard to say. But there is a special place in Hell for people who make a living off of the misery of others. And that's not just my take this time. Keep asking the right questions Brodie. Someone needs to point out the hypocrisy and question whether or not a tipping point exists somewhere out in the off-shore ether.

Maybe you're right. People will bet on how far a flea can jump if there's nothing else going on at the moment. There were times when I would show up at the golf club I was a member of and get paired up with strangers. Mostly folks were okay but there were times I had to decline because the other players would insist I play for money, skins, individual score, whatever. People love to gamble and as long as they have that itch someone will be around to scratch it. And the house always wins in the end. Myer Lansky pointed out that reality years ago. He said eventually the government and corporations would take over gambling because there is just too much easy money to resist.

It is not just sports betting that has caused such an expansion in betting. As states legalized casino gambling it became more socially acceptable to bet in casinos. As that market began to mature and other states made it legal states expanded the market by allowing on line at home or anywhere in their state legal to play casino games. So of course they wanted even more revenue and sports wagering fit that spot. So today we are bombarded by gambling advertising and shows about gambling on both TV and on line sites. This does cause problems with compulsive gambling just like any other issue like excessive drinking or drug abuse or other activity. However little is said except those quick notes at the end of commercials about compulsive gambling hot lines. States and gambling companies need to do more to help compulsive gambling programs exist to help or risk more restrictive controls on their gambling sites.

Here in New York, online sports betting was "late to the party" so to speak. Legalized online sports betting starting in January 2022, so 2024 was only the second full year of it in New York. The two states that are within $1Billion "Handle" of New York are New Jersey, which started in 2018, and Illinois, which started in 2020. So, a "newness factor" might explain some of why New York is so much higher than the nearest 2 states. Also, the NYC and Long Island areas have HUGE populations and, in some areas, are super wealthy. I am a casual observer BTW, never having participated in the online sports betting phenomenon. I would rather just enjoy the games. 😎

I don’t have any statistics to give you at the moment, but I can give you personal anecdotes that I think are fairly indicative of gambling in North America. I’m 28, and I teach at a major university and I coach high school boys, so I have a pretty good pulse on young men. Sports gambling is absolutely endemic amongst men aged 18-30 right now. The majority of men my age seem to do significant amount of gambling, and maybe about 5% are borderline addicts, including my best friends. The majority of college guys seem to bet on sports, and even a ton of high school boys use someone else’s account to bet on games. I think a lot of young men don’t have much hope for their futures, and are happy to gamble away at sports to achieve some element of thrill in life. It’s already been a huge problem in Europe and Asia, and now it’s becoming a huge problem here. I fear gambling addiction is skyrocketed for Gen Z.

Until pretty recently, it was much easier for the average person to bet on sports in England than in the US. There are Ladbrokes all over the place in England, whereas physical sports books are less common in the US, and many states outlaw them entirely. But in the last 5 years, a huge chunk of Americans can now bet on sports from the convenience of our phones, which has really changed the game. Gambling is absolutely skyrocketing among North American men aged 18-30. I see it in my own friends, for sure. I think it’ll only get worse.
