l liked the original Star Fox. The game play, believe it or not, totally new and iconic for the time. Nothing like it had ever been seen before. I remember feeling like it was really space-age and cutting edge. The music was also really cool and made you feel like you're on an epic space adventure, fighting to save the galaxy. I used to hold a tape recorder up to the tv because the music was so awesome and l had no other way to listen to it on the go. It doesn't hold up quite so well today with the bad framerate, but it's still playable and enjoyable, and remains an important piece of video game history.

Looking at this game now as an adult and designer, I really like the art direction. Back when I was a kid I looked at the ships and buldings and monsters as if they were made of paper. It really worked out to me. And I used to love the puppets on the cover art too. I guess good design is about dealing with the limitations and I believe they did a great job.

The relative scale and depth of this game and environment in the context of the sega and snes libraries at the time cannot be overstated. This game felt giant, complex, even fast and overwhelming. We just weren’t used to seeing that many objects in 3d rotating, firing, changing directions and speeds. Star fox felt like a giant, open world game If that can make any sense to you. Even if you’re literally on a rail. It just felt massive.

I replayed it recently and right before I turned it on I was terrified to find it aged beyond playability. Instead I still found it perfect. I was astonished to see it hasn't, at least for me, aged a day. The same applies to Ocarina of Time: I was scared shitless going back to it, but it's still perfect.

Regarding the disclaimer at the beginning: I can totally understand it. I'm a little older than you, but for political reasons (GDR) I didn't really get to know video games until the end of 1990, but then I really got to know them straight away. In any case, I noticed the primal slime, monochrome games with beeping sounds, the development of the NES and GB, Mega Drive sorry Genesis and then the SNES right at the beginning (here April 1992). Back then they thought Actraiser had good graphics, something like F-Zero and Pilotwings were absolutely mind blowing, but then came Starwing (yes, I'll call it Starwing). I didn't play it nearly as intensively as you describe, but I was still fascinated. The graphics, the music and the game itself were great. While I'm not a fan of rail shooters in retrospect, the fascination I had back then still remains. Yes, today's children can only be scared away, but whatever. I also have to say that I found Lylat Wars (yes, that's what I'm going to call SF64) pretty boring. For me as a hardcore Nintendo fan, that's quite an announcement. I found it boring back then. So when it came out I was excited too, but of course it didn't have the same impact as Starwing. That's why the enthusiasm quickly disappeared. What was left was a technically fascinating shooter with the voice acting, but then I'd rather stick with something like Ikaruga. If it's rail, then really straight.

The deal breaker is the third route being broken due to the misscoded vulnerability on the boss from Venon air space. That's really bad. Your only hope is to reach the boss with 5 bombs, kill all the vulnerable spots you can, then try your luck by burning your bombs on the remaining 1 or 2.

This is such a great series. Sadly, I was born in 1992 and didn't get into gaming until after the SNES was done and I was drooling over the ps1. However in 2003 I played an SNES and really loved it. The games I played were a link to the past, Aladdin, Mario is missing (eek) and Starfox. Much later, I picked up an SNES and a few games for it and REALLY got into collecting. This series has really been great to seek out games worth checking out and playing. Thanks SNESdrunk and keep making these awesome videos.

Man when I was little the SNES was my VERY first game system. My dad had bought one on launch day and to this day we still have all the classics and boxes in near mint condition (Star Fox, Pilot Wings, Street Fighter 2, Tetris 2 etc.) Super Mario World was the first game I ever played but Star Fox was my childhood obsession. It’s funny because now I think if I played this game the frame rate would probably bug me as well as the stages where huge chunks of scenery come in out of nowhere, but back when I was little none of this came across to me as a “technical limitation” I just thought that’s how the game was designed and that you had to replay the same levels more and more to anticipate what scenery was gonna jump up next. There’s a challenge to not knowing what’s in the distance. While we wouldn’t accept anything like that these days, to me back in the day these limitations gave the game the most replay value. Great review as always, this was a childhood favorite of mine so it’s easy to be biased, yet at the same time if I played this for the first time today, I wouldn’t view much as a “limitation”. To me games have to be viewed with context of what was barrier breaking in that time period. Looking forward to more videos, Drunk!

Starwing my favourite version of the game I loved the simplicity of the game choosing 3 different paths easy normal and hard mode which meant through perseverance I was able to see all the levels. I don't have any issues with the framerate to be honest it looks and feels just like how it did back then. Starfox 64 was great too but because of the way the game was designed I wasn't able to see the whole game at the time I had no guide and much of the game was like secret routes and medals I had no idea how to obtain. So in every way I preffered the structure of Starwing SNES however with all that said Starfox 64 or Lylat Wars was a worthy sequel.

It's an all time great game. Never before had there been such a cinematic 3D shooting game. I was there when it was released and it was a revelation and there was nothing like it on any other console. Sure, there were some PC games that could rival or beat it on graphics or 3D worlds, but they lacked the overall excitement of the accessible gameplay and the kinds of PCs that could run faster than this were so expensive they were not accessible to the kids who were the target market for Starfox/Starwing. It was groundbreaking and it is still a great experience.

Generally agree. I absolutely adored this back in the 90s; it was as if the old vector graphics Star Wars arcade game had come home to my SNES and was amped up in every way. But now, sad to say, I find it borderline unplayable. I guess I'm spoiled, but the slow framerate and input lag really are deal breakers for me.

If Nintendo would release a version of this that simply output the polygon visuals in full HD (so no jaggies) running at a solid 60fps and with no visible pop-in, just like M2 did for the recent version of Virtua Racing on Switch, I honestly think it would be one of the best 3D shmups out there. The atmosphere, gameplay and music and still as brilliant and compelling now as the ever were imo, and all we really need now is a version of it that displays and runs the game basically how were see/remember it in our mind's eye.

I appreciate this game for the amazing innovation that it was. As a kid, however, I hated the graphics, and even playing it now as an adult on the Switch Virtual Console I find it difficult to understand what I'm doing or looking at. Still, if one can get used to that, then it's a solid SNES title that's still different enough from later counterparts. The 64 version will always be one of my favorite games of all time, too, and we wouldn't have that without the SNES version paving the way!

Same. Love this game very much. It was a VERY smooth playing style. The music was amazing. Ya the graphics dated poorly but it was a semiole game for Nintendo. The slow down is annoying but you learn how to use it to your advantage! My only gripe was on the hard level set Venom attack when you take on the orbital battleship it gets VERY hard to attack, and nearly impossible if you have no powerups to hit those annoying small target cannons.

Such a polarizing game. The people I run across either universally love it or don't understand what the fuss is about. I'm somewhere in the middle. The 3D didn't do a whole lot for me and stuff like Wing Commander and X-Wing on the PC fulfilled my star fighter requirements. But the game is still simple and fun and the Tron-like style of the graphics is more aesthetically pleasing to me today than the roughly textured polygons of the Playstation era.

I honestly like the feel of playing og star fox just a tiny bit more than 64. Don't get me wrong, I freaking love 64 to bits. But somehow the first game feels a bit faster and a little more zippy. I like the feeling of performing fast maneuvers with lightning quick reactions and the higher difficulty spike you can only get with an old game like this. And even though people don't seem to like the graphics and dismisse them for "being old," I have a deep fondness for the sureal and beautifully simplistic art style. It goes to show how you can truly do a lot with very little.

I'm not really a fan of flying games but I love Starfox and keep coming back to it. The first few levels are addictive. My advice is to practice the final levels on emulation with save states and then enjoy the satisfaction of a full playthrough. In fact, that's my approach with most non-saving games. Unlike others, this doesn't ramp up the difficulty to become brutally awful later on.

Starfox & Starfox 64 probably got the most attention on my SNES & N64 respectively but I still go back to the SNES version more often. This is mainly because my N64 no longer works from a faulty power supply and emulation of Starfox 64 is okay at best when compared to the real thing, I've seen the video up-scaling + high res textures that modern emulation can achieve but it behaves differently than the original hardware. Plus, if I want a nice Starfox 64 experience, I reach for the N3DSXL. One thing to also note, a complete run through of Starfox snes looking for 100% hit is about 28-35 minutes and only gets longer with how much you suck, with Starfox 64 without warping is about 50 minutes if you're a speed runner and up to 3 hours of causal play. Although I enjoy longer games, I need something to quickly beat and move on with the rest of my day. Also running it with a MiSTer or SD2SNES (FxPak) has overclocking options however it slightly speeds up the rate that the game plays at, which is fine if you're good at the game. It adds a layer of difficulty & the game runs much more smooth. The other thing that it does break is the timings for the credit roll, the music no longer ends with "The End" appearing ~20 seconds too soon. Oh well. Also, don't get me started on Starfox zero... I'm still bitter, it's a beautiful game that I want to like so much but when I play it I hate the controls so much that it basically ruined everything else for me. I also had the many builds of Starfox 2, but maybe I'll share that story another time. I like mainline Starfox, if you can't tell. Other little tid bit, did you know? The garbled transmission voices Fox, Slippy, Falco, & Peppy is the same sample of "Wing Damage" just played with a different pitch, speed, & different parts of the clip in order. I also found their death transmissions to be disturbing as a child lol.

But in the case of the graphics in Star Fox, it can’t be overstated how amazing it looked seeing it for the first time as a kid in the 90’s. It was absolutely mind-blowing. I never had an SNES as a kid, but I never forgot how awe-struck I was seeing my friend play Star Fox for the first time. Thankfully the gameplay is amazing, and holds up after all these years. AND on an SNES. I mean in 1991 when the SNES was released, NO ONE would believe that an SNES (or ANY console available at the time for the matter) was capable of pulling off a 3D/polygon game at all. TECHNICALLY 5hat is still true because without the SFX chip then this game would not exist. At the end of the day, who cares if graphically it looks prehistoric AND the frame rate can be slower than a snail on the back of a sloth walking uphill in molasses at Christmas during a huge blizzard, it's still fun as hell and easily a pick up and play game while waiting for your girl to finish getting ready for a trip to the movies.

This was the first Nintendo game I did not fall in love with. I was twelve at the time, and was not impressed by the graphics (maybe thanks to Wolf 3D?), indeed hated the framerate. But most of, it didn't have the Nintendo-way, i.e., games with choices and adventure. The Genesis was for these kinds of games, meh, I thought video games had evolved beyond '3 lives and see how far you can get' design. Come to think of it, this was one of the last huge mainstream games that did.

Dude I just introduced a brand new retro gamer to Starfox with no vintage experience. Hated it at first. Re introduced it a week later. Warmed up to it. A month on, and with the whole Genesis and SNES library available, it was the ONLY retro game they liked enough to beat. That frame rate though. This is a game that needs 120fps. Native render. Wish that source code was public. Hope it still exists.

Though the addition would have bumped up the cost by like $100 to the SNES, imagine if the SFX chip would have been included in the original design for the SNES as opposed to a cart add on. I mean the games we could have gotten with that extra power could have been amazing and the SNES would have easily taken over the 16 bit era. Actually, it could have been the catalyst to having near full 3d games in the SNES which never fully came to fruition until the 32 bit era Basically what I am trying to say is games these days could have gone in a radically different direction then what they did Sorry if this is making not much sense as I am currently pretty damn drunk and high but I hope that the just of what I am thinking is at least getting through to some degree anyway.

The first Starfox should be remastered. To me it is the best and most nostalgic. Remastered, I think it would make money.

I dunno how controls are unplayable. I love this game so much. Yeah the frame rate low. But come on. It's nearly 30 year olds.

Even back then I thought the graphics and limited framerate were crap. To the point it became unplayable for me. The same with Mario Kart.

The graphics and frame rate are pretty much unacceptable by today's standards. Granted, on a standard def TV it was harder to tell.. at least with the graphics. The frame rate has always sucked even back then! However I'll never forget the day I got Star Fox, fired it up; and was blown away by how cinematic it was. And whats this!? All sorts of voice clips too. (a real rarity back then) sure they sounded like crap, and most of it was complete gibberish. However my 11 year old mind glossed over the glaring flaws of the game, and just enjoyed the experience! The music is what still stands out to me even to this day, I think it's really what made the game so enjoyable. Star Fox 64 is certainly a good Star Fox game as well, but it just didn't capture the feel of the original for me. Despite all it's improvements over the original.
