Starfox 2 is actually one of my favorite Start Fox games. One of my favorite things about it is how the difficulty setting completely changes ALL of the levels. It's like playing three different games. The only downside is that the overall game is actually a bit on the easy side, even at the maximum difficulty level. The difficulty setting doesn't actually make the game harder, just longer. But I suppose that would have been fine-tuned in the final version.

SNES drunk: "Man Nintendo did some really dumb things in the mid-nineties." SEGA of Japan: "We screwed up so much worse we don't make consoles anymore."
@voidstrider8014 жыл бұрын
Between the failure of the 32x and games that required both the Sega CD and 32X extensions to run (when already available on the CD), they screwed up hard. Sega Saturn famously struggled with 3D graphics and was a pain to make games for, Quake had to be completely re-done from the ground up to work on the console just to give an example. The Saturn clearly needed more development time before release than they put in, they also announced the Dreamcast too early, halting Sega Saturn sales. The Dreamcast would have lived for a few more years without those poor choices putting Sega in a financial pit.

An interesting add to the comments on how features from this game would later reappear is that the walker from Star Fox 2 is actually a big part of Star Fox Zero for Wii U with the player able to transform into it at will. Furthermore the Fox amiibo even grants the player an Arwing skin from the original Star Fox and when the player transforms into the walker the skin is the same as Star Fox 2's walker. I thought it was pretty cool myself.

that 3d argument is ridiculous especially considering it was donkey kong country with its 3d modelling but 2d gameplay that gave the snes a huge boost in its later years.I doubt many would have held it up negatively compared to the ps or Saturn based on that.

Star Fox Zero got a LOT of it's ideas from this game. I didn't even realize they had already thought about the Bipedal Arwing such a long time ago. I wonder why they never implemented the idea until the Wii U version. Here's hoping for a Star Fox game for the Switch!

Now would actually be a perfect time to release Star Fox 2 on Virtual console, to celebrate the launch of Star Fox Zero, which seems to be paying homage to it. I believe the issiue has to do with the copyrights to the Super FX chip tho. Hence, why we haven't seen the SNES version of Yoshi's Island on VC.

Is there any legal stuff regarding this chip? I heard something about it, explaining why Nintendo released the GBA version of Yoshi's Island on the Virtual Console instead of the SNES version. Maybe they can't release this game because of this legal problem with the chip technology, but regarding Nintendo a lot of decisions just don't make sense (see Mother 3).
@guspaz8 жыл бұрын
+Cyrus Annihilator Nintendo hasn't released any games with the SuperFX chip at all, as far as I can tell. I suspect this has much less to do with legal ramifications and much more to do with the extra effort required to emulate it. Nintendo has had emulation software for most of the hardware in the SNES dating all the way back to the lifecycle of the console itself (although it didn't run in real time back then), and the SNES CPU is from the 6502 family that was also used in the Atari 2600, Apple II, Commodore 64, and even the NES: the 6502 series was super popular, so there are lots of emulated CPU cores available to license for it. In fact, the SNES and the Apple IIGS use virtually the same CPU The SuperFX chip, on the other hand, is pretty complex, and was probably never emulated in-house. On the other hand, the SA-1 chip used in games such as Super Mario RPG is basically a much higher clocked version of the SNES's own CPU, so most of the work there is already done.
@CyrusAnnihilator8 жыл бұрын
Adam Zey I don't have much knowledge on the subject, but if amateurs could emulate these games a decade ago, I'm sure Nintendo can do it (or, at least, hire someone capable). If you "unlock" your Wii or 3DS, you can play any SNES rom on it. So, it's not a technical limitation.

Hey SnesDrunk nice video. Just wondering what your thoughts are on Star Fox Zero, which Miyamoto has said that it borrows a lot of elements from this game. Also, I know this is kind of out there, but would you ever consider writing a book about the Super Nintendo? I feel like you know a lot more about it than most people and I would definitely read it. Thanks!
@SNESdrunk8 жыл бұрын
+BigMacOpossum Thanks, I don't really follow gaming today (there's too much stuff to discover that already exists), so I doubt I'll get around to playing it when it's released. And yeah I've thought about making an e-book type thing with re-written reviews.

I've played the rom of this game, and while it doesn't feel as epic as the first game, it does feel like you're in the same universe, and adds just enough new content to keep it feeling fresh while familiar. It's too bad we didn't get this back in the day, and I agree that the reason it was canceled is total bullshit. Oh well, at least the rom is here.
@adesignersperspective8 жыл бұрын
super FX games run too fast on most emulators, so while star fox 2 is indeed a lot more advanced than the original star fox and does generally have a smoother framerate, in your video here you're still getting a hyper-fast hyper-framerate version of it due to the emulator you're using. if you want to run the game as it was intended to be played and at a speed closer to what the actual SNES hardware would run it at - without running it on a repro cart on an actual SNES - you're gonna need to run it on the higan / BSNES emulator - the only emulator available that accurately runs super FX games at the same speed the actual super FX and SNES processor ran them at. just a note. (:

marathoning snes drunk during my commute i was pleased we both agreed on many many things. specifically ff6 insiginficant opera being grandious masturbation and star fox 64 being a better more accessible game than the original. point of contention here though but not much of one, you seem to be overly fixated on this game for its graphics and how nintendo felt that was what was holding it back from being the 3D experience they wanted to deliver, with alot of pressure from competition ramping up their consoles. my take on it from reading Shigerus interviews at the time the graphics were a small detail. The "feeling" of flight on the analog stick is leagues ahead of using a d-pad. miyamoto said it had a "floaty" quality to it a dpad just could not replicate. On the subject of "feeling", it was the focus. thats why the rumble pak was pushed so hard with it. youre also neglecting the sounds. the sounds of ships crashing, buildings breaking, arwings gliding along water, and explosions. its all so much more immersive than the originals beeps and boops. to a lesser extent radio chatter of enemies and your allies gave the battles a greater sense of being a part of something greater than yourself, even though it was more of a trick cause there was literally nothing happening outside of foxs view. i believe nowadays graphics is gonna be what turns people off from trying snes star fox and appreciating it for what it is, but i feel youre neglecting a larger part of the equation when you make it the practically full reason Star Fox 2 wasnt what they wanted to push as the next star fox experience, cause it was more than that. other than that, we can agree its pretty shitty star fox 2 didnt see a release for what it was sooner for the people who wanted it for what it was.

I would love this to appear on Virtual Console as well but I am afraid that will never happen. It seems very unlikely that Nintendo will ever release an unfinished game on the service and even if they would, the technology of the chip it uses (like the original Starfox and Yoshi's Island) belongs to Argonaut. That company isn't around anymore so er ... yeah. It will forever be a pipe dream. That being said, there should be an english patch available that turns one of the beta roms into a more complete game with english translations.

Wouldn’t Argonaut being defunct actually make it _easier_ for them to release it? They don’t need approval from them since they no longer exist lol. Which they proved when they eventually released Star Fox 2 on the SNES Classic/Mini, which u wouldn’t have known about 6 years ago when that comment was made lol

just finished it on the snes classic...aaaaaaand it kinda sucked. it’s painfully easy (at least on normal mode) and if you know what you are doing, you can finish the game in less than half an hour. in addition the footage of the ROM shown in this vid looks waaaaaay more fluent than on the snes classic. on that thing the framerate is just as bad as starfox 1. i can totally see why nintendo held back the release. in hindsight it was kind of a wise choice, i think.
