My #1 reason to play it is because it's comfort food. Doesn't matter how bad or stressful life is, you can boot STO up and wrap yourself up in it like a warm blanket with no stress or feeling of demand or concentration needed.

DOwnside of the game is that it's most fun for Star Trek fans, as casuals who jump in will very likely have no idea what the fuck is even going on or why conflicts or plot threads occur, I'm getting my Uncle who's a long time Trekkie into it and I've made him a list of just essential episodes to rewatch, ones I can think of that ties into each major plot thread. For example the Delta Quadrant arc is the hardest one, as most people who get into STar Trek can quicklly get informed about the major Alpha and Beta Quadrant factions as they play centeral roles in STar Trek across the entire series. But the Delta QUadrant is rarely touched on outside fo Voyager, and I doubt anyone would want to binge the entire thing quickly just to understand the Delta Quadrant arc, for example the Vaadwuar and Kobali, there's 3 major episodes that tie together through this arc. THe one where Voyager and another Voyager end up in some quantum bullshit and one needs to be sacrificed so the other survives, well in that episode the real Hary Kim dies and his body is left in space, while his duplicate lives on as the new main Harry, then we get introduced in 2 other episodes to the Kobali and Vaadwuar, these 2 races come into conflict in the Delta Quadrant arc of STO, and as a sub plot for a mission the original Hary who died was picked up by the Kobali, so when he wakes we get en interesting small mission trying to help him adjust to what's happening. People who havn't seen these 3 episodes wouldn't know what's going on.

@@drumguy1960 Yeah but its like those super predatory mobile games that suck you in with free stuff, then offers you a bunch of new shiny things that will take you a crazy amount of time to earn... or you can just pay money for. In fact it is far more efficient to pay money than it would be to grind it in game, you're effectively being paid many times below minimum wage to do that, and they know that ofc, thats the whole psychological strategy. Then there is the gambling angle on lots of things in the game, like upgrading rarity and re-engineering. Once you're out of dilithium, well, you can wait to "refine" more, or spend money. Its really a spiteful, greedy and shameless little game at its heart, but also kind of decent in its gameplay and attention to detail. I would definitely discourage anyone from playing it who is prone to overspending in these kinds of games.

The Star Trek franchise was always my personal favorite, especially in my childhood. Star Trek Online does not seem like a toxic ex-girlfriend. This online game is more like Aunt Jackie !

Regarding the DS9 anniversary arc, you neglected to mention that chapters 7-11 of the arc were never released to be played. They posted the roadmap of the first six chapters up front, with the promise of the other half to follow. Then it was time for Cryptic to shill for Discovery at the expense of advocating anything remotely reminiscent of actual old school Star Trek, and the DS9 anniversary arc got skipped right to the grand finale. In which the characters in the story act upon information they had not yet acquired by the end of chapter 6, "Tenebris Torquent". Without showing the episodes in which they acquired the information utilized in the planning of chapter 12, "Home". And all that Kael would say about it was that it ended how it was supposed to, no matter how many times he was asked how much was skipped to get to the ending. Cryptic's shilling for Lens Flare Incorporated at the expense of actual Star Trek is also why the story arc of Ambassador B'vat and Miral Paris got deleted except for just 2 missions, so as remove all content contradicting Discovery when they insisted that Klingon religious structure is that strapping coffins to their spaceships will give them a magic bonus to armor class. Lens Flare Incorporated is the reason number zero to not want to dive into the new content still being made. Sadly.

I've been playing since Beta, with some long and short breaks now and again, and I'm going to keep playing till I can't play no more. In all the usual complaining about things that happen in and too *EVERY* other MMO as they've aged people forget about a lot of the small things that game holds. Bugs and Lag happen, welcome to online gaming. Like for example, and probably one of the most important is that game holds the last acting jobs of René Auberjonois and Aron Eisenberg before their deaths. Voice acting only sure, but I feel that is something, we as fans, should at least care about and want to preserve.

My biggest issue with the game, is that they took all of the warring factions, (Federation/Klingon/Romulan/Dominion/Cardassian) and for the most part, put them all on the same side. Sometimes you want your Romulan and Klingon character to be the bad guy, and attack the Federation. And there is little of that in the game.
@Travybear1989
@Travybear1989 4 ай бұрын
Yeah, it'd be cool if there were a "warmode" where you and your friends can assault enemy space-ports and stuff but they'd have to introduce an opt-in phasing system so the PVE players could get their quests done. Also, the game needs more evil options in general and the only times you can be truly evil is during the "old era" missions where you attack the Federation directly but those are very rare.

I don't mind the ground combat, its just more chill than space, but its not bad. Its pretty fun if you track your DPS and try different builds. A lot of people who play ground do bad damage, usually I do 2000-4000 DPS depending on the map, and most other people are doing 100-300. Bearing in mind ground DPS numbers are way lower than space DPS numbers. But if you're doing 200 dps in a group of others doing the same, then I can see why it'd be drawn out and boring. There are some fun ground maps too. Another good thing about ground is its easy to try different builds, its not super time consuming like space, where all kinds of things have to be changed.

OK as far as the monetization. Seriously? It's a business!!! Nobody is forcing you to spend money, it's a TOTALLY free game and you can get a LOT of good stuff if you just learn how to play. I make TONS of money in game from the exchange but crafting and selling item from the crafting mechanics and they cost me NOTHING but playing time. I have made BILLIONS on the exchange selling crafted items and flipping cheap ships. Most of my ships have come from the exchange. You get free ships to play up to level 40 so it's not like you're in a level 1 ship your whole time playing. There are events that you get free ships and I mean GOOD ships. You can make money on the exchange and buy ships and equipment plus you get good equipment sets from some of the missions as well. Are there things you can drain RL money on, of course there is BUT you don't have to. The game is VERY functional w/o spending a penny.

I'll put a positive spin on it and reason to play, from a former and newer players perspective(I played it once before years ago briefly, was overwhelmed by the content and stopped. Reinstalled it now... 6-7 years later, really enjoying it. I guess I got more patience and "chill" with time)). 1. I ignore gambling boxes tbh. Every game has em, get over it, they're not going anywhere. If you have no self control, then it's a problem and I certainly don't like them, but the only escape at this stage is to play games that are offline since seemingly most all big game companies and popular online games have adopted loot crates or gambling boxes etc. 2. You don't need to care about ANYTHING to play this game lol! Seriously, one of the most attractive aspects of STO is you can go at entirely your own pace, watch all the mission and storyline vids, listen to the character chat or simply skip them. So no, you don't need to be a Trekkie to play this game since the main storyline seems to be accompanied by the who, the what, the where etc. 3. The STO world is big, spacious and very relaxing to play for hours. Space stations, even the corridors and bridges of ships themselves are hilariously oversized. One would expect such constructions in space to be tight and claustrophobic, rather uncomfortable to play but no, to give the game devs credit(whoever they were originally), us players feel like we're standing and walking throughout absolute airport sized everything and tbh, it's very nice. There's no doubt this was purposefully done and kudos to those that gave it the green light. 4. There's an absolute LIFETIME of content! Whether it's story content, Trek lore, crafting, upgrading, amount of alternative items to play around with, builds etc, all of those things are in this game. Originally, as mentioned, that was off-putting because I was overwhelmed by it, but actually, you don't need to get stressed about it and as also mentioned, STO is a game where a player can go entirely at their own pace, and imho slower is actually better tbh, as not to miss out on the lore and story modes and just make STO a chillout game where you can kick back and enjoy the journey rather than making it a hard-grind to get to the destination. As is often the case with most games, when you get everything you want or think you want, the game interest suddenly plummets and imho I've found games are at their best and most appealing during the "early days" phase. 5. You genuinely don't need to spend money. PvP is a different matter most likely(as tends to be the case for all PvP games), but like I said, I play STO for chill and I'm not going to ruin that but to each their own. For PvE, yes, it's nice to have that upgrade and items carrot to chase since it's just fun to work towards a goal but it really doesn't matter and won't hurt you as a player for not having the absolute best of whatever it is. PvE missions seem to scale to a players character level, so you don't need a top level piece of equipment and in fact you can't even use it until you level up. This is good and bad. Good because it keeps the NPC enemies at your current level which means it really doesn't matter and prevents missions from being idiotically easy(instead of just one-shotting everything that seems great but quickly gets boring), and yet, it does make investing in such low level items pointless since ultimately you'll be replacing them with higher level variants as you level up. This is fine too tbh, since you're character will level up quickly anyway and overall it won't cost you much of the in-game free credits you'll accumulate enough of anyway. 6. Some of the best equipment is entirely free. Yes, in most all cases I've encountered so far it was possible to obtain a really REALLY good piece of equipment or set just from completing story missions. If a player needs several of that same piece of equipment, that's ok because you can simply replay that mission and get another of the same reward. Rinse and repeat. Like I said, you can skip all the story vids and chats if needs be, which means you can get through most mission replays pretty quickly(by STO standards anyway lol). 7. Unlike some game alternatives, You don't need to pay money to transfer equipment from one ship to another and there's an in-game option that automatically saves an ships equipment loadout so you can apply the same sets between ships without having to grind out a set of each and every ship in your collection. I'm not sure it always works well, but then again I'm a bit of a noob so it's probably a me thing lol. 8. There seems to always be event marathons running for good/great/amazing items including top tier premium style ships. So ya, overall, it's a pretty good deal. Play it entirely for free like me, or splash some cash. Play PvE and chill, or go full whale or grind like a lunatic. Either way, STO seems to cater for all walks of life, ages and styles. It's not perfect, no game is, but it's certainly very decent in most areas. That entire change around of staff and ownership is a bit of a concern, but tbh even if you spent some money you'll still get good value out of it since most things don't cost much in gaming and wouldn't even cover the price of a night out in town tbh.

Recently got into this.. About a month ago. Be advised this title is not new player friendly.. The obscene reputation grind was obviously set in a timeline for the whole player base to progress slowly. This task will keep you time gated from competing on any level playing field for months. If that wasn't enough, you will soon discover the endeavor system. Which will update you on being nerfed for literally three years should you decide to play that long. People are into 600+ points, where a point might happen every two days. KDF fleets are on life support or mostly not developed. If you get into a good one, good luck on the admin's ever allowing you to buy from stores. Spent a month with 200k credit as Bekk/cadet with no benefits for fleet gear. It's a tiny little club for psychos if you ask me. The fed side is better if you want to actually improve.

Even most TFO I'm fine, ofcourse I not single shot kill most of the enemies, and I can't tank out the whole TFO alone, but I can hold my ground just fine. So those things are not much of a disadvantage, if you don't want to compair your D size to other players.

Commenting further on this post... I do suggest as far as reputation goes that you focus on one character to max level (65) and max out as many reputations as you can because once you max a rep you can make it easier for all of your other characters to level any reps you have maxed out. Some of the best gear you can get is from the reputation system BUT you can get some pretty good gear just from doing the missions as well.

I TOTALLY agree stay away from the lock boxes AND the Phoenix Prize Packs. You have a better chance of being struck by lightning twice on the same day than getting a ship from one of those. Other than those the game is great you can get PLENTY of good ships by doing events and making money on the exchange. This years event allows you to (if you so choose) to acquire up to 5 ships. 1 free premium ship, 2 free C-Store ships and enough Lobi to buy 2 more ships, all from just doing the year long event that costs you NOTHING. There are 6 parts to the year long even and the last one I just completed netted me another free ship of my choice. We just finished part 4 of this event.

I would NOT recommend anyone else ever play this game, its barely even a game anymore, its just a big bullshit cash shop and if you don't spend either thousands of hours, or thousands of dollars, OR in most cases BOTH, you have no chance at having the nicest things in the game. Every meta build uses multiple LEGENDARY ships, their traits, and their consoles, and the only way to get those is to bust out your credit card and swipe for like $350.

Seemed to be the best MMO to me for Star Trek. It updates with more content continuously and there is no reason it can't evolve with better graphics with all this technology. The problem is the people who run games like this and only concerned with profit from their greed! I have seen so many great games ruined by people like them like Aion and others! These scum suck people into spending money because there is not enough treasure in the game! Then after a few years they change the equipment, so people have to start again despite spending hundreds of dollars beforehand! Yet they give no compensation to veterin players who spent this money! Star Trek online doesn't have these problems yet as much, but if you want a better Starship, a better interior, better equipment, better staff and other advantages that free to players don't get so much then real money is needed! Is a sad world!

The game is fine but you need to know what to expect. YES there is a LOT to learn but the fun of the game is getting in there and learning it. What fun is any game that you can just start playing and be GREAT at it. Curb your expectations....If you want a plug and play game STO is not for you

The negatives list included a lot of 'out of game' stuff that really may / may not have any impact on next year . On the other hand, my main gripe with STO at the moment is just Devs going off the deep end and just (from the looks of things) saying "fuck it" . From the (at least) 4th update to the Galor/Keldon -- the ship now fires torpedoes to the side -- and because there's no mechanic to support that, the torps now fly sideways and then forward to get into that 90° torp arc that the game does support . Why ? And why now ? Because fuck it . Also, because of Thomas Marrone . Fuck it also goes all the way to their idea of "improvement" on Borg content (the most played content in the game) . So you boys like the Borg eh ? So how about red tractor beams ? Antiproton weapons ? Sure ! Red is the Borg you all know and love ! No "cool / canon" playable Borg ships ? Well how about this one that was never in the shows, but it's from this other game you see ?! Hell yes the Borg are (now) about non geometric shapes ! Borg !!! Woo-Hoo !! Are you seeing red by now ?!? Is that anger or just the game ?? Who cares ... because fuck it . Because fuck you . With that type of "care" by the Devs , an Executive Producer that came up from the worst department @ Cryptic (QA) , a persistent bug (4-5 months now) for a portion of the players that crashes the game every 5-15 minutes (there was a supposed attempt at a fix two patches back that reset a bunch of stats 4 players, brought back an old but, but didn't fix the crash bug) -- all in all I'd put these things down to the Negatives list . This isn't a game, but more of a balance between a perpetual endurance test and troll asylum ... among other things , with half the Devs (some of whom are now likely trolling) ready to bail from Cryptic . So ... yes, this game is totally worth playing in 2024 . Unless you're a Borg fan . Then it's strongly recommend that you put on some green shaded sunglasses ... at least until your head explodes when you get to "portable Vinculum's" . /EndRant

What is the experience like on Consoles? .. I have an Xbox Series X but I’ve been told this MMO is not exactly a quality port.. I’ve never watched Star Trek and am completely unfamiliar with the universe.. but I do love Sci-Fi and I’ve been looking for a Social Gaming Experience here lately.. So this game is capturing my attention atm..

Were I to start playing today, could I play through the original content,, and work my way forward in time, or does it follow a broken timeline, like WoW - where once Cataclysm expansion happens you can't go back.

The game is free flowing. They even have a place where you can go to old missions. Beauty is it's totally free if you choose to go that route. Now that will slow down your ability to get new ships but honestly I have TONS of ships, some I don't even use anymore and I have probably spent about $1000 over 10 years. I didn't have to but the option was there if I couldn't live without the ship.

Not until they FIX the camera zoom issue FFS. 7 weeks and nothing.. still broken. 1 TFO it auto changed every 3 seconds. That's 300 times in a 10 minute mission. Unless they fix game breaking bugs it will be dead inside a year. Monthly maintenance maintains nothing. It adds more bugs and the servers lag even worse. Great game but ruined by mismanagement, greed and poor upkeep.

I think...the writing for STO may be on the wall. The layoffs were a telling sign and key personel are just gone. Plus I think more cuts will be coming next year. In all honesty STO probably has about 2 to 3 years left before it goes into maintainence mode. Content will be slowing down considerably than it is nwo. And of course, Kael will be failing upwards like he always does.

I left because of how they dealt with Cardassians and Romulans. We knew where this was going just a month into the release. When Federation fans were complaining that Klingon cloaking devices actually worked, suddenly those devices broke and weren't fixed. Anyone who brought up the issue was banned (prior to going free to play). Those issues were never fixed.

Number one reason not to play: It's NOT really a Star Trek game. It's a kill-everything-that-moves game with Star Trek branding. Mission 1: Diplomatic Orders -- kill everything. Mission 2: Rescue the Azura -- kill everything. Mission 3: Doesn't really matter -- kill everything. Number one reason to play: The duty officer and admiralty systems are neat. You can pretty much do those 24/7 if you're not into the genocidal side of things. You can even farm marks for reputations doing non-violent events like Summer Monkey Tags and Winter Epohhs. So you can sort of make the game more Star Trekky, it's just that no one actually does. It's all "How quickly can I make those living beings into dead beings?"

Absolutely not!!! If you want a fun space exploration experience that takes skill not money from your wallet try elite dangerous horizon a game where you have to actually earn your ships. Without all the bugs. But hey some people like gambling so remove the actual gameplay and just go full loot boxes and stop would probably do better.

The Star Trek franchise has a massive fan base, and, sorry to say, that fan base deserves much better than this. The game is dire. The loading times are awful, the ground combat is ugly and clunky and the bug fixes are left behind by the constant need to create even more new lock boxes to steal money. The 'events' are boring, overly long and frankly not worth the rewards. Until the community vote with their feet and demand something way better, nothing will change. The game is crap. Face up to it.

I don't care so much about the gambling. It's your choice to gamble or not. Just like if you have a problem with gambling, then that's your issue, not everyone else's. My biggest problem with the game is the combat. It's far, far, too easy.

95% dissatisfied with STO for 2023. Honestly borderline disgusted with STO. Almost no worthwhile ships most of 2022 and all of 2023. The best of course being lockbox insanity. ALL far too expensive. Not even ½ worth the grind... Devs 100% focused on everything NOT what invested players want and have been vocal over all decade. The devs doing what THEY want ONLY, NOT what ANY communities I hear are CLEALY VOCAL about wanting. Illustration of leaning towards uninstalling: Going to run the Q's winter wonderland race>>> but sudden pop-ups to Kramperie stupidity block player input got me disqualified off the course. Options settings have no actual effect on popups stopping game input. Attempt # 2 'Not Responding' freeze-up and then lag throw me across the map = disqualified [ I have 100GB bandwidth and ZERO issues with ALL other online everything ]. Attempt 3 I make it but barely due to snowman fight animations and stupidity for the periodic timed event content... So embarrassingly JarJar binks stupid... Should I touch on over a DECADE'S Worth of GAME CRIPPLING BUGS that NEVER get ANY dev attention? Seriously NEVER. Should I touch on the obsessive compulsive attentions to all everything involving the rainbow community at the expense of the other 98.7% of all other players globally? EARTH gets it, STO is 100% devoted to the 1.3% of the population devoted only to pronoun slavery. It shows in EVERYTHING STO constantly. Should I touch on the total lack of incentive for long term players to even log in anymore? Because adding almost ZERO worthwhile/NON vendor trash --ANYTHING--- for all of 2022 AND 2023 have left me wondering why I don't uninstall for a few years. There is NOTHING worthwhile, nothing honestly new to play or play for for us lifers. Should I touch on the Devs BAIT AND SWITCHING every New ship/weapon/console? We pay real world $$$ for the nice ship/weapon/console ONLY TO HAVE Devs NERF it within 60 days. Every time. You know, to balance things [ their checkbooks ]... Disgusting and unprofessional. Should I touch on the bugs again since the Devs do not and are not qualified enough to ever do anything ANY bugs? Should I touch on how LAME and embarrassing the idiotic 'Missions' have been, and that the vendor trash they offer as rewards to play are NOT worth 2 pixels? Should I touch on the BROKEN DIL MARKET WITH ITS WORTHLESS INGAME CURRENCEY THAT TAKES 3 WEEKS to TURN in for WORTHLESS Zen? I think EVERYONE STO should be FIRED. CLEAN HOUSE! Then what assents that are worth ANYTHING whatsoever should be transferred to a MODERN game engine to a Corporation that KNOWS WTH they are doing for once and who actually CARE about the game and us players. Because these STO devs and owners do NOT. Yeah, and this is the nice and short version.☺ ANYONE who listens to ANY of the STO communities will hear this and far, FAR worse.
