I get the impression that him and the guy doing the video are often asked to try to help a gaming company limit the spread of negative word-of-mouth. Hence all the "D4 is a good game for a casual dad" parsing. Honestly most gamers are better off just saving their money instead of trying to find something to like about the latest scam AAA release.

Asmons said this before, but before the internet, before influencers and social media and score botting and other hyped up bs, people played games in vacuums, and their opinions werent influenced by anyone else, and that could mean that for one person a 6/10 could actually be their best game ever, hitting all the right buttons and just a perfect game that they enjoy. All this extra crap is layered on top of actually purchasing a game sitting down and enjoying the heck out of it

I never understood the whole "it gets good after x amount of hours" thing. I had fun right away. It's a Bethesda game and anyone with experience on a Bethesda game knows to do the stuff you like and avoid what you don't like. For example, I got bored with the main quest line so I decided to mess around. I ended up getting arrested and then I was coerced into going undercover in a pirate crew by the government. I then backstabbed the government every chance I got and started a smuggling ring. That was fun and it was wayyyyyy before 20 hours of playing the game. People are just used to games with linear story telling and short uneventful side quests. They're used to games like RDR2 and not Bethesda games. Don't get me wrong, starfield is not an objectively good game. RDR2 is better by far but there's still plenty of fun in starfield.

This game just didn't live up to the massive hype plain and simple. It is just a sign we need to take space sim games from AAA with a grain of salt. Most developers can barely fill a continent with meaningful content so expecting them to fill a planets let alone multiple planets is naive. They need to stick to how mass effect did it, make the worlds in lore but then concentrate it into a smaller selection of planets.

Thing is with No Man's Sky, I love the game and played the shit out of it (long after release and all of the improvements were made), but at the same time after a while all the content once you get to a certain point feels all the same due to procedural generation, nothing actually feels like there is care and attention put into it. No planets are really catered with things to do, like there are no real good curated experiences aside from the main questline (which is also arguable i think). However with Starfield, yes the exploration is lacking, and in a space game that really sucks, but for what is there in terms of content with the side/faction quests I think is really, really good. I feel like a lot of the complaints I'm hearing are from people who really bum rushed the main storyline, which I'd agree is pretty mid, but much like my experience with Oblivion I feel like i am doing everything except the main story, I do one thing and 3 others open up, I talk to an npc i think is random and it leads me down a whole questline, etc. Tl;dr is I think a lot of the complaints are totally valid, but people are acting like the game is an absolute dumpster fire which i haven't seen, performance has been fine for me, I think the art is pretty visually striking, and the side content has kept me really interested. Like considering Bethesda's last outing was Fallout 76, I'm pretty happy with Starfield, and it is nowhere near that level of broken and incomplete

We were doing it together, and at the end she told me she’s proud of me despite she didn’t like our faction. It really made me feeling things when I was playing it. But I guess most people didn’t care about that? @@grayfarron5077 It's about setting your own expectations. So, since I'm tired of playing the drawn out storyline stuff (whether it's fascinating and engaging, or lukewarm nonsense) it just doesn't appeal to me. I saw the new Baldur's Gate game, I'm so happy that it did well. But I didn't get it.. I know what I'm looking for. So I know that this game (Starfield) isn't for me. If it's best feature is an aspect of gaming that I'm actively avoiding, and it won't deliver a good experience on the rest, then that is the BEST review that I can get for it: I can be informed, and know I should pass on this game. It would likely sit there and gather dust in my games library forever.

Agreed. The completely side part of the game that is completely optional and you have to go out of your way to even engage with it, is not as good as the other games that do that, but none of those other games also have 100+ hours of a BGS RPG as the meat and potatoes of it's content either. The game keeps me entertained. specially that one mission with the Teramorphs? And how they're made? I find that story really good. The Spy for UC to infiltrate the Crimson Fleet is great too. And looking for super power "skills" are fun to do. What im trying to say is that everyone have their own cup of tea when it comes to gaming, we might get upset from their "takes" and how they view the game but that is alright. TL;DR: I'm just ranting/frustrated below. Basically, I think Asmon is just entirely too broad in his criticism. Yes it has flaws, but IMO it's not a bad game, it's a _highly_ flawed great game. It's the difference between eating sugar-flavored shit and eating a platter of food with some great and some terrible parts. Honestly, while I agree with the criticism of Starfield when it comes to many individual points, I'm super frustrated with Asmon's general take on the game. It has a _lot_ of flaws, yes. Having said that, it's also my favorite game in a while. I didn't care for BG3 in the slightest, it's just not my type of game. And while Starfield has features that feel fully undercooked/etc, I still really like many other aspects of it. Asmon's take, from what I gather, is that the game is a steaming pile of shit that has a few grains of sugar. I'd instead say that it's just a prepared meal where half of the things on the plate taste terrible. You don't, for the most part, have to eat those things. Does exploration suck? Yes, but that's optional. Do faces look like crap? Eh, I think they feel very Bethesda-y in a good way (but otherwise yeah a little crap lol), and tbh I thought Asmon didn't care about graphics looking stellar so it's weird he brings this up often. Is there waaaaaaay too much fast travel in the game? Yes/no. I don't mind the fast travel _exactly_ , but you spend far too much time in menus for fast travelling. TL;DR BGS needed to find a way to let the player get from A to B without needing to open a menu to fast travel, or something. Other notes: Enemies are spongy late game; the perk system, while cool, ends up being a pain late game when you need a ton of xp to level up just to get access to features locked behind perks. I have ideas on how to fix this but w/e; the game takes like 15 hours before it gets fun. Not an excuse, that's 100% on BGS and entirely their fault. And even then it's not for everyone; the outpost system has IMO a critical flaw that makes the whole thing a waste of time until it's addressed (not worth explaining here) As for the good: Many quests are 10/10 in my opinion. Wow. I never care about quests in BGS games but this one it's practically all I care about. Combat feels great. After those 15 hours I mentioned, you _really_ start to feel immersed in the game. Sooo much. Far more than other games I've played. Sucks that it takes so long to get there, I really didn't care for the first 10-15 hours, but now I love it. The main quest line is, somehow, a really good one from BGS this time around. New game plus is cool (it's not just the usual new game plus) and changes some dialogue in minor ways, and not just for the main quest dialogue. Side quests too. Related to immersion, I like the dialogue. Probably not for everyone, but I like lore, so I enjoy hearing people in game just talk casually about stuff without having to be funny or whatever. Shipbuilding is incredibly cool, though I wish there was more to do with ships than dogfighting. Probably will get more love with mods or DLC though. Edit: spelling lol

The game is fun if you ignore the space travel and ship related exploration. As usual Betheseda and Todd tell me sweet little lies Howard set an expectation that they cannot meet. Flying the ship is boring, space travel and exploration sucks. The ship is much better as a fast travel mechanism that you forget about. The quests, "dungeons", settings, etc are what is fun. Betheseda creates worlds that players get lost in and mod to their knees and they did that for the most part. It would be cool if NMS and Starfield could do a fusion dance. NMS does space travel and exploration well, at least surface level for the most part. NMS gets repetitive af and every planet is still super similar as far as just being different color scheme and slightly varied animals and plants. The exposition dump quests are boring too, imo they are weak where the other is stronger. I feel like if Betheseda did not try to hype the ship and space exploration to the same level this would have been received differently. Plus mods, modding is fun af, the scene is already going wild. Procedurally generated planets suck too, they could both do away with those. I would rather a smaller hand crafted universe like outer wilds than a bunch of empty boring planets, realistic or not. No one wants to explore a boring rock in space 1000 times, they want to find different worlds with things going on.

Put it this way, all of Bethesda's current IP before Starfield was either created by someone else or by Bethesda themselves back when they actually gave a damn. A lot of creativity went into The Elder Scrolls' world building with an entire pantheon of gods, different civilizations with complex histories. Fallout is dripping with style that's justified by an interesting post apocalyptic history from a universe where 50s Americana persisted for decades before the bombs fell and centuries afterwards in the post apocalypse. It also has a lot to say about human nature. Starfield is just bereft of any style or substance that might carry the many blemishes nearly all Bethesda studios games have. And hamstringing themselves to create many planets to explore means they all have to be bland and soulless or the game will never finish.

It is a good game, not a revelation, if you just experience the many convoluted levels of complexity with its flaud systems and all, while letting yourself lost in its world, allowing yourself to be surprised in many moments along the way. It is in many ways similar to Skyrim and yes mods are making it better as we speak. It has that nature of trying to capture a world where anyone can find their own personal story, quest, experience etc. so in many ways kind of ambitious, and an RPG at its core with everything this involves. It is a game with a certain style that may not be suited for some people. calling it a "piece of shit" because you don't like it doesn't make it a bad game. It has many things that need fixing and are totally anoying? Yes. There is also another similar game in that regard. I for one played WOW for a some time and I still don't get the appeal or passion people have for it. So I stopped playing it. Doest that make it a "piece of shit game"? No. But I could certainly call it that and would have many arguments in favour of it. I can also appreciate what it does so good and why so many people like it. In my opinion Skyrim was even more flawed at start but at the time there was no comparison, expectations etc. so people were just more willing to just experience it while mods made it such a long lasting game. I for one played a quarter of it at start, stopped and started again after about 2 years when it was a completely different experience after all the mods. Calling it a bad game while not playin it and experiencing it for yourself is an internet trend and I feel people playing games have also changed a lot. Different expectations and reactions, not entierly from deep passion for games but rather just being associated with some group.

Skyrim was much more interesting when it came out than Starfield, just the exploration there are already 10 dimensions of difference. And I can't even say that Starfield is even just "good" honestly. And frankly I find that we are doing too much with mods, soon my games will only be 10% complete and my devs will let the mods do the rest and the players will work for them, have compatibility problems, etc. 'updates, etc. Personally I'm not someone who spends hundreds and hundreds of hours on a game (I don't know how people do it). If I play a game when it comes out then I move on to something else, I'm not going to play it again 2 years later and go through lots of things I've already seen just because certain mods have changed little things. I'm not against mods, it's good that it exists for those who want it, but seriously if it's so that the games are less and less finished I find it really bad. Mods are really not a miracle or perfect solution, and if I buy a game it's not to tell me that maybe in 2 years if I manage to install mods without having problems then it will eventually be fun. .. I'm trying out the side quests now but I cannot say I'm feeling the magic. You might be right, it feels safe, not urgent or threatening. I feel mostly sad because the one mechanic that I enjoy, the ship building, it largely pointless. Ships are basically portable player homes and the space battles begin to feel routine after a while. The bar is low now for AAA games that "gamers" find ways to find what is good about a game and completely ignore the bad. I do not know about you BUT if I spend $70 on a AAA game not just any game but AAA game with millions of budget, with hundreds of people working on it and in years of production, that game should JUST BE GOOD ON LAUNCH DAY! Here's a thought, what if you just pay a percentage of what the game is worth then pay them the remaining balance per patch they release to polish their game. Games being produced today directly reflect the gamers = TRASH GAMERS DESERVE TRASH GAMES

If you are looking for wide open empty spaces, bugs, stoic faces? Who would be looking for that? What is he smoking? Sure there is positive stuff. But let's be honest. Bethesda did NOT evolve. They build the exact same game as FO3 and 4. They also build it in the same engine, with the same bugs, the same glitches and the same old-fashioned look and feel. It's just extremely lazy and they focussed on the wrong stuff to add to their engine. Now they just wait for the modders to fix their broken game. I think they would've been better off creating 5 FO4 sized worlds.

It's funny, you are the exact opposite of me. When I play Videogames the story is the most important thing to me. Things like looting and leveling, it is ok and can be fun, but in general it is really just secondary to me. I want that games bring me into another universe with interesting characters and intriguing backstorys. Of course the gameplay can't suck, but I can forgive gameplay flaws much easier if the story is good, a bad story on the other hand I can't forgive. If the story is bad, after a few hours I just stop playing. That's the reason why I never cared about Diablo as well. The whole point of that game is to loot new gear and level your character, but looting and leveling, just to get stronger, isn't motivation for me. I need the story to give me the reason to get stronger so that I can progress the story and ... idk ... save the Universe or something. Or another example, if there is an open world I don't wanna just walk around and raid some lame ass camp of bandits in the hope that somewhere is a weapon with slightly increased DPS. I wanna walk around to find some hidden quests, little or big sidestorys that make the world feel alive. The only games that had such a good gameplay that I finished them even though the story ... actually almost didn't exist ... were the Souls games. But apart from that, always story first.

@@aedanryan Yeah, I know that they have a lot of stuff hidden in item descriptions etc, but 99% of players will never read them. I think it is not a controversial thing to say that almost noone plays these games because of the story, they might watch a 40 Minute lore video. For me at least the descriptions and this stuff doesn't make a difference. That's why The Souls games are the one exception, regarding my initial take.

I sincerely wonder how it's possible to like games for the story, and aside from saying that only Souls attracted you without the story... I mean apart from the story the only thing What do you like to do is just hit mobs and bosses all the time? There are still MANY games with much more diverse, original and less repetitive gameplay, which do not put the story first. You do what you want of course but I have a hard time understanding, Souls is literally always the same thing for over 10 years now... And I will pass on the fanboys who dare to say that the history of Souls is interesting...
@t.muller825
@t.muller825 Жыл бұрын
@@nawack2774 Well, I'm not here to argue about Dark Souls. I would disagree and say that it isn't always the same, that the gameplay always approves and with games like Bloodborne and Sekiro even changes completely, but whatever. Regarding your point about story, it is as I layed it out. Even if the Gameplay is good, usually I get bored after a short time if there isn't an interesting story I follow by playing the game. I, on the other hand, don't understand why you don't understand me liking storys in Videogames. Well made storys are in general interesting, that's why people watch movies, series or read books. Games are in my mind the logical next step. You don't just watch some story in another universe, you go through it yourself. You fight the enemies, decide what to say to NPCs and make choices that change what happens. It takes something that people always liked and elevates it by giving the player the opportunity to interact directly with the story. If the story isn't good, the gameplay feels obsolete to me at some point. If I don't fight the enemies to stop the bad guy, to save this character or to solve that intriguing mystery, I have no reason to do it at all. I'm happy for everyone who likes to play just for the gameplays sake, for me it just doesn't work.

Skyrim had a certain magic to it that Starfield simply lacks, and I could get lost in the game for hours on end just exploring. I don't feel compelled to do that in Starfield. I find myself bored of it now and probably won't finish it, but I have put a good amount of time into it already. The game's various narratives keep pulling me out of the experience Not really spoilers but recently happened upon a generational ship who missed the FTL boom and was adrift for 200 years The premise was clear, the land they were wanting to settle was already occupied by people who had stayed behind and went into space when warp drive was a thing Pretty cool no? Well, it's about to smell like sour milk once you bite into it... The generational ship ppl are just like, "Stranger, you are our liaison to ask this settled colony to move out" not cohabitate or work on integrating themselves into modern society, kicked out Pretty shitty people, even if they've been cooped up in a tin can since their grandparents left earth So you're like, "Okay, let's go check out the settlers..." IT'S A FUCKING CASINO So now you're being put in the most cliché dilemma of "Immigrants goooood, rich people baaaad." like it's not even trying to sugarcoat it, it's modern daying you right in the face Anywho, it's a whole f-ing planet, and they want a casino to shove off prime real estate, yeah right And while I'm complaining that it's pulling me out of a good experience for some lameduck california yuppy's wet dream story, I go exploring the gen ship, trying to see how well they did the whole "This place could sustain people for centuries" schtick: Three tree garden... THREE..! A control deck that takes up half the living space, a mess hall that looks like a prison cafeteria, and everyone's just all like, "Yup, this baby's been our home since it launched off earth" -- The thing is hecking MASSIVE, ain't no way that ship's getting off earth raw launch, much less support a functional colony for 200+ years, immersion was broken And just to kick me in the nuts while down and crying over such a cool encounter being royally ruined, I go to Engineering, notice a PC and guess what? F*CKING STARWARE "Oh We've been adrift for 200+ years, no communication, we had no idea humans leap-frogged us into interstellar travel" Well they sure as hell either got the software updates from microsoft in the middle of the void or none of the PCs in Starfield have been updated since the 2100s!! Why why why... 7 years, seven f*cking years, I'm mad because this isn't rocket science (pun intended), how did they go that long and say "Yep, this is ready for print" It's frustrating because I know mods will fix a lot of issues, hell, even remake the experience from scratch at some point, but this isn't even trying... In Skyrim, vanilla had garrisons, dungeons, caves, dunmer ruins, falmer colonies, wizard towers, abandoned settlements, BLACK REACH, oblivion tours of all sorts In Starfield, you get the same mix of 3 types of settlements, maybe a cave or two which aren't elaborate or just are dead ends. Copy and paste frozen laboratory with the same loot boxes so you're practically able to predict where the good stuff is every time, and miles and miles of space DESERT. It's not fun, it's not inspiring, it's bone ass dry. Yes, there are elements that are fantastic and slick like the ship and base building/snap together stuff, the borderlands-esque loot system... maybe a few other things, but they could easily be added to an existing title and it would blow Starfield right out of the water Thanks for reading my rant, it's just like... the biggest issue is this took seven years and hell, week 2 and modders already have a more efficient UI, basement gurus are able to do in days what these companies milk publishers for years to do, they're gaming the industry bigtime, it's not just having high standards, it's that from a consumer perspective, I'm telling you, I'd be pissed if I found out a studio I published their game, took this long to make this, such a waste of time for everyone

If you're someone who's into RPG's and heavily into the roleplaying part, you don't need Asmon's validation on your RPG games. Asmon never play these RPG games for the roleplaying aspect, he plays them for the action and the 'wow' factors as he keeps mentioning. Which basically means that he's the last person I'm going to take into account when judging if a RPG game is good or not, honestly. Nothing against Asmon, but I think that from the way he plays Starfield he's one of the least qualified people to judge if a RPG is good or not. His arguments for the game being bad, like Sarah talking about her life or whatever just validates this even more, how is that even an argument to the quality of the game. If you're looking to shoot stuff you can just go do that, nobody is forcing you to listen to any dialogue that you can simply skip or ignore. He haven't finished the game, haven't done most of the side content and is already giving the game a score. If you wouldn't take anyone's opinion seriously based on these criteria, then don't take his either.
