I wouldn't rush the main but I will tell you that depending on how many playthroughs you do certain things will start to change. On my fifth time, I think that was first time something really different happened after using the artifact to start my new game, on the 5th time or so around you will notice something when you get to the headquarters. And what happens depends on things you did through your first 4 plays. There is also some special things that happen when you max out certain things in the game on your next playthrough and the 9th or 10th round you'll run into something extremely cool trying not to put spoilers. So this is probably why he was hearing you needed to rush through because all you have to do is get the artifacts do those missions only and then you can go to New game Plus, most people that are in the know play 1st time normally and then speed through 2nd 3rd and 4th playthrough to see what happens on 5th and then rush 6 7 8 and slow on 9 and 10 I don't know anyone past 10 yet to see what happens

NG+ is like death, you die alone and you don’t know if you’ll be alone afterwards. Once your in the NG+ everything feels dead and not worth it, and constantly feels like everything you had continued without you, takes away the homely feeling of the game and makes you not care as much. If you choose to fight both the hunter and the emissary you will also get two COOL ASS guns from them when you beat them to play through the rest of the game with. So just enjoy the game for what it is. I tried ng+ and as he said it just isn't worth losing everything for a fraction of beneficial gain. Another thing I think people overlook with NG+ is that it’s a vehicle for role playing your character. Usually with new games I have a feeling that I need to just consume all the content and see everything. That was really true for this game and there is a ton of content. After going through the unity a few times you realize it’s about doing things in a new way and playing the contents/stories you enjoy the most. My ultimate goal is to just get my character to level 100. I mained the story and naturally consumed the rest of the side content in NG+ 2. After 180 hours I’m deep into NG+4 but I’m only doing the things I want to do and where I started as a goodie two shoes, I’m now a murdering psychopath that has a million dollar bounty on my head with the UC. I’m a straight pirate and this gave me a different way to approach the game, seeing how I’m going to side with the pirates now it’s letting me role play in an entirely different way to my road to 100. And it feels... sad. Not grindy, not bad... just sad and insignificant. Which is from a writers point very well done, but if doing things in a game feel insignificant, there's a slight problem. I mean, as certain characters also go through unity with you, I hoped to meet them again, I mean "my" companions from "my" original universe. But that hasn't happen and so the only stable companions are the hunter and the emissary. For the writing this is brilliant, if it were a movie I'd totally be into it. But for an RPG this feels... devastating almost. It's close to the fatality of Cyberpunks ending. And I admit, I am a big softy loving my happy endings. I just wish there'd be at least an option to at least take one companion with you, even if it would be hard to achieve. - Also, I hope there will be someday a "cataclysmic" universe, in which humanity is almost entirely wiped out and only the spacers remain.
@Rust·Spencer·Cohle Жыл бұрын
If only we had the emissary or hunter as an 'basic' companion, it would make the journey venturing out into the multiverse feel less 'lonely' but I suppose that is the point :( Once I get to NG plus 10 I'm going to settle on a 'good' universe seed and try to rebuild those 'connections' again, even if that means starting over.
@TraceguyRune Жыл бұрын
I think that's the whole point, and pretty much why The Hunter is the way he is. After a certain point, murdering people becomes second nature. Why should you care about them when there are unlimited universes. Just seek the quickest route to power and Unity
@VulpesChama Жыл бұрын
@@TraceguyRune I both agree and disagree. But the Emissary is the counterpoint to that the Hunter is not the definite result of the journey. It is fair to assume that we have no idea whether the Hunter is longer on this journey, even though it seems likely, but it doesn't need to be. Starborn-Cora is also a counter example for that journey to be fixed. The good thing is, this whole Starborn-business is still open to interpretation and anything goes. Which gives Bethesda the potential to throw out some really, really good story-dlcs. Potentially. And I hope that there's a companion-related dlc somewhere waiting that is build around a ... reunion.

I'm on my 6th NG+ and have decided to stop until mods. Really hit the nail when he said, "You begin to develop this detached mind set..." I usually feel this way when I make multiple characters in past games, but with Starfield it's more appropriate. A neat little roll play idea I came up with is when I start to feel detached and treat everyone around me as they really are (NPCs in a game) I remind myself that even though they are different people with the same familiar faces, they are still people. I should treat them as if I'm meeting them for the first time. Sure, I could kill Vladimir just to see what would happen, but I would still be killing an innocent person. The idea is to retain your morality while doing different things through the different universes. Think of a constant pull between the Emissary and the Hunter. Both the Emissary and the Hunter are in my opinion immoral extremities. Instead of choosing black or white I prefer to fall somewhere in the gray. Yes, I want as much freedom as the Hunter has, but I also know how important it is not to abuse my power and use it for evil. I also can't help to feel like I'm constantly looking down on others. Magic powers aside. Not necessarily a "holier than thou", but more like in a literal sense. The main character in a video game. I love immersion in beathesda games, but the more I tried to immerse myself in this game, the more detached and evil I began to feel all because I was getting too impatient when talking to people and had to ward off the intrusive thoughts from taking over and start killing people just because it was quicker. *spoilers ahead for anyone who wants to be surprised by the NG+ differences* In my third NG+ all of constellation were replaced with children. I was very surprised and thought it was so cool. Up until I realized I wasn't able to have my buffs for my ship. (So, about 5 seconds) In my fifth and most previous NG+ I ran into Andrja in the Lodge telling me that she has hunted down and killed every other member and that I'm the final kill to be made. This really tore me apart. Andreja is my favorite character and the one I usually romanced. Having her not only tell me that she's killed everyone else, but having to kill her to progress the story with my bare hands (the other zealots were too tanky for me to kill and take thier weapons) really got to me. Think of Rick and Morty meme when they come back from their 20 minute adventure. "Let's go. In and out. 20 minute adventure."

He had living parents, the adoring fan and the only “special” thing was the belief in the great serpent. I decided the best background was the long hauler one since it isn’t anything special and makes sense since you would be grav jumping a lot to see your serpent god. My character is a goodnatured Diplomat, who De-escalate conflict and bloodshed throughout the system: Diplomat, empath, dream house, kid stuff. Diplomat, because my character is soft with words and as an empath they can tap into the hearts of the people. They're good natured because of the empath trait, so they linear more towards the hearts of the people more than the mind. That means talking down a trigger happy spacer by being persuasive by having no more bloodshed etc. Dream house, well because all that time spent winning over others they're bound to find a way to get a big house, either by talking or a parting gift by some spacer noble who they've helped persuade along the way. For kid stuff, I see it as a means to pay back the parents for the initial support for that diplomatic education during prior years. As you could tell, doing an evil playthough doesn't make sense for my character, so they're good all the way. Maybe once I get further and further into NG plus, my character might become an 'neither black or white' good vs evil but a grey all around type person due to the twisted reality my character would have experienced along the way. Very true. I think every player has more or less a bit of a dilemma at the campaign ending, but since i found out you can get all the different types of powers within the first playthrough I really don't think i need to play 9x further just for the power fantasy. On the other hand the powers aren't even remotely balanced and seem like an afterthought during development. I mean this game is easy enough on very hard. Though that hunter suit is looking sick... Basically I just wanted to go through that portal to become starborn, get the ship and suit and I really liked that for the story reasons. Then again reaching higher levels will be a slog if i stay in one universe as well (currently only 36)... I would love for a way to travel back to the first game as well, maybe that's a neat idea for a DLC or mod.

Did you talk to the Hunter in New Atlantis, and again in Akilla before doing the main quest? There's some special dialogue you can get at least the first iteration, where he talks about "All the things I've been in life." It implies every time he goes through the Unity, he tried being a bit different, living a different life. To me that's where the NG+ appeal is rooted. Starting over, and living a different life. Rushing to NG+ quickly on my first playthrough really made me face how I play video games and left me with a really deep sense of sadness and longing for a universe I would never be able to return to. The Hunter seems, to me at least, to be the perfect representation of the power gamer who has lost the joy that comes with playing the game. "Playing the game" simply to be the strongest player when, ultimately, it really doesn't matter. I used Enhance to change my NG+ character into an older version of themselves and just named them "The Imperator" thus effectively stripping the remaining bits of their humanity. I'm saving that character, but likely won't return, it's just too depressing.

I think Starfield focused more on scope than on intimacy because it is a space game, that's understandable. But I don't think that scope really plays that well into the NG+ mechanic when the focus is on making the game wider instead of deeper. If they focus on making subsequent playthroughs more meaningfully different from one another, even at the cost of slightly narrower experience, I think NG+ suddenly becomes much more interesting and worth investing into. Imagine a whodunit questline where the suspect is actually random every playthrough. That is just one example, but nearly every size and type of questline could conceivably be altered from playthrough to playthrough, but I can understand that it would be difficult to balance creating entirely new content vs iterating on existing quests to add replay value. It's their first implementation of it and it's an ok feature as it is now, but I hope that they refine and improve it for their next game, assuming they bring it back at all.

Considering that the biggest problem with Starfield is exploration and once you land on one planet, you've seen them all give or take biomes and lifeforms. What incentive is there to continue into NG+ other than the armor, ships and powers? The only thing that changes between universes is Constellation. The story is exactly the same, the quests are exactly the same, every New Atlantis is the same exact carbon copy of the one in universe 0 or whatever. ESPECIALLY when there's no limits on joining factions in Starfield, you can be a legendary space pirate, a militia ship captain, a space ranger and corporate rat all in the same universal playthrough so there's no real reason to try something different (except maybe siding with SYSdef in case of pirates, but the outcome is more or less the same.) You either learn to play the game at your own pace, or you flat out ignore the game until you get to NG+10 for the best rewards AND THEN enjoy the game. It's just strange to ask players and even design a game like this.

I got to level 55 before I did NG+ and for a while, I contemplated just reloading an old save. I felt detached, and worried I wouldn't connect as well with the characters the second time around. But I realized I was looking at it wrong. It wasn't like I'd lost anything, I can rebuild the friendships I had with the characters over time and this time do stuff different- hear all their dialog, get to know them better. One thing I regretted in my initial playthru is not flirting with Sam until the very end, since a lot of the flirt options it'd given me were pretty poorly timed, he'd be opening up about his past, present, and future dreams and you're like "Oh I thought I was the subject of your dreams, hot stuff?", I couldnt bring myself to do it the first time around. I missed out on a lot though since you dont really get another chance to experience those lines... unless you NG+ or reload. So this time around I'll get to save everyone, and I'll get to experience the lines I missed. I'll befriend the companions I didnt in my first run, and spend time doing the stuff I like ingame~ and if I even progress the story at all, I wont be going thru the Unity again. Mods will come out to make that ng+10 crap buyable eventually. I just wanted the chance to save all of my friends, thats enough for me.

I definitely felt the cynical vibe with my second universe and that's pretty cool for rp. That said, I got really sucked into the main quest the first time so I wasn't that attached to my first universe, other than Andreja. I'm on the third now and am doing all the factions and stuff. I want to hit all the temples but that is such a boring grind that I have to do other stuff in between. I'll probably do the full main quest again for the rest. I think it's fun to slowly build the ultimate character and to do that by doing nearly everything before moving on. It's also probably the most ethical way to be a starborn. Each universe has it's own people and struggles. You can be a good force, a bad one, or an absent one. But when I'm ready, I'll leave it all behind and meet another Andreja in the next one.

Sadly once you spend some time in a single playthrough, you realize the only thing rushed was the game. Lame companions, terrible missions, and 0 depth basically sums it up. Oh, I hope you like the abandoned mine and abandoned cryo-facility, because that is the layout for EVERY mission. Oh, have it on very hard and finding no point to use cover, or even really do anything except walk around and casually kill the enemies, and then leave the loot because it is such a hassle to sell. Make a bunch of money and design a ship, just to for some reason start and do it again while you lose everything? Oh, you want to play again? Want to start a new character? Nah, you better just do the NG+, in fact we discourage you from making a new character. Lol this game is such a drag. Maybe in 5 years they will fix it and can come back and buy the game of the year edition. With Fallout 4, Fallout 3, Fallout: NV....it just felt so rewarding to play the game, make new characters... On Starfield I am around 120, with over 10 skill points banked, and I don't even have anything to spend them on. I have more money than I can spend, a bunch of ships, 100s of items I dont want to sell because it will take me hours of my life just waiting around for merchants to refresh.

I also found the shift in attitude after you go through multiple times to be very interesting. It is a feeling I have never experienced in a game before. Also worth mentioning is to save the game just before going through the Unity. This allows you to go back and play each version of yourself at will. You could in essence be living all your muliple selves at once. Just like Barrett.

*Shortest & simplest reason not to rush into NG+:* You should get unlock all of your _special abilities_ in NG. Why: In consecutive playthroughs, you'll be able to upgrade the ones you've already found, but any you hadn't previously found will only be unlocked that playthrough, not upgraded, so it'll lag behind. You want to acquire *every* _special ability_ in each playthrough, so that they can all be fully upgraded by NG+9.

While playing Game Plus, every time you level up elite mobs will scale up with you and their dps and armor increase while their loot doesnt improve. So have fun get weaker as you level up. Great design.

Personally, I didn’t want to commit to so many questlines, characters, bases and ships when I knew there was more to come after NG+. I ended up getting there and I’m very happy I did. I know you said from a RP point it’s lacklustre but I don’t agree to be honest. I didn’t have a set background for my original character so maybe my opinion is different, but I ended up finding I liked the RP of being a Starborn a lot. Constantly cycling between universes, destined to always leave loved ones and friends behind every time as I knew there were universes out there being targeted by the Hunter and Emissary. I have done varying quests every time I’ve jumped into another universe, always feeling like it’s my duty to keep pressing on and never settling to ensure numerous universes are saved and free to make their own choices. I became the arch enemy to the Hunter and Emissary in a way. Either way, I understand why some wouldn’t like NG+. For me though, it added a whole other element to the story and experience of Starfield.

I'm actually doing the opposite. I'm a power hungry pirate who just wants all the power. He grinds out NG+ until maxed out before finally starting to get a heart and seeing the true beauty of the universe. He starts using his powers for good and doing all the other factions. He starts exploring and settling outposts all over the place. And then he finally settles down and gets married to live happily ever after until the DLC gets released.

Thanks Scott, I was looking forward to something like this and you said exactly what I wanted to hear, that the Starborn ship #6 and the armor "felt like a downgrade" as they were weaker than your actual gear and that was my main concern, like I have limited time and dont wanna go through all that grind and you just persuaded me to skip all that hassle and just focus on NG+1 just to get the cool looking ship but then do my own ship as usual and enjoy the game that way.

As someone who is going to ng10+ (i have to go higher to max everything) i just want to point out how long a run can take for those like me who want to get all powers to level 10 as well as get the final armor. Rushing the main story and getting every temple done in a single cycle is like 3 to 5 hours of time for me. Depending on if i get decent weapons dropped by enemies and enough ammo. I also scan every planet in each system that has a temple for xp as i go adding time that you could skip. The big annoyance is that in 3 of my cycles not every temple was available for some reason. In my original ng i had every power but 2 and scanned every planet not being able to find the last 2 and not getting a quest from vlad to find more. In my other two instances this happened a single power was not available in the cycle via just rushing to get all fragments then doing vlads quests (im not scanning all planets again.) Honestly, i feel like it is either a glitch or just a fault of procedural generation. Because many of my runs have all 24 powers. So, its possible that the quest from vlad messes up and doesnt reaquire itself or that every (maybe just some) temple has a procedural component and may not spawn. As a side note im currently in ng+7. So 4 of my cycles had every power no problem. Just saying that in case people start to get freaked out by my experience.

@@Skalli10Spoilers... There's supposed to be alot more but it's random from what I seen. As for the main story, there's new starborn dialogue like calling out characters because you already did that event once. I stopped at ng+ 4 and decided to settle on that universe, I encountered 4 new dialogue options but I haven't progressed to far into the main story so there's probably more. Planning on doing the faction quests to see if any new dialogue pops up as well but we will see. The reason you might not have encountered these events is due to a low probability of them showing up, if someone decided to settle on ng+ 6 and they have to kill Walter or anyone else, it would kinda suck to grind for 90 minutes to collect all the artifacts again, i haven't seen the events either, while Some people seen 3 by the time they reach ng+6, so just bad luck.

Me personally, what I did was go through to NG+, then I immediately started to just skip the campaign and do the relics and rush through all the new games. In my head I was sort of building a story for my character, where at the end he did end up becoming like the Hunter, but by NG+ 10 he had enough and is settling down in this universe. I feel like I'm different when it comes to NG experience, because I feel more attached to my NG10 save than my original save (but then again, this is the only NG save where I actually bothered to do the story again and am doing the starborn options.)
