I have asked permission from the Chiefs of familial clans for permission to wear that clan's tartan. Wasn't needed but it was a fun little project. And as the queen is officially over the Stewart tartan I sent a letter to Buckingham Palace where a correspondent responded officially denying me permission from wearing it 🤣🤣 she said officially, no because I'm not her subject. But she's well aware it isn't going to stop a thing. I think the most scottish thing is to be told no by the queen of England and doing it anyways 🤣🤣🤣🤣

My first kilt was actually a regimental one ( Gordon Highlanders/ Gordon Modern ). A really heavy one ( 22 oz ). Military often sell surplus stuff. I think as long as one is not wearing the whole uniform it should be fine. If you wear a uniform jacket with no isignias combined with jeans you are not passing yourself off as military. And with tartans worn by military they are often clan tartans…so worn by entire clans anyway ( like the above Gordon ). If the tartan is exclusive for a regiment/ branch or what have you, it would be another thing.

A Google Search yielded the following: “Despite its royal associations, the Royal Stewart Tartan can be worn by anyone, a status confirmed by the Scottish Register of Tartans, who state: ‘In the same way that clansmen wear the tartan of their chief, it is appropriate for all subjects of the Queen to wear the Royal Stewart tartan.’” I think the “everyone” is in the context of everyone who is a British subject. I was once told by an Aussie that Americans really shouldn’t wear Royal Stewart as they are not subjects of the Queen.
@USAKiltsOfficial4 жыл бұрын
Good points! The only thing we would say is about the Aussie that said Americans shouldn't wear it: Unless they held some position of authority within the Tartans Authority and had just reason why someone shouldn't do something, their opinion (whether British, Australian, German, Japanese or Chilean) is just that... an opinion. :-)
@geektome47814 жыл бұрын
@@USAKiltsOfficial He wasn't telling me what to do. He was explaining that, if one really should not wear a clan tartan if not a member of that clan, then one should not wear a Royal Stewart if not a subject of the Queen because Royal Stewart is only a "universal" tartan for subjects of the British Commonwealth.

Royal Stewart was concocted long after the Stuarts were succeeded by the Saxe-Coburgs. Like BW it's widely and commercially available, have a ball. Black Stewart is the best looking Stewart. Only Balmoral and Lord of the Isles are reserved for the members of the rf. The latter to only 1 member.

Civilian pipers and pipe bands have been imitating military fashion since the 19th century, so naturally once the Royal Stuart (or Royal Stewart, one sees both usages) sett became identified as a "musician's tartan" for pipers and bandsmen in the Scottish regiments, it was widely taken up by organizations who wanted that same smart look and identified with those military traditions. The British monarch has in the past "bestowed" the "honor" of wearing the Royal Stuart tartan on various bands or units as a symbolic mark of favor (the Royal Scots and Cameron Highlanders pipers were so blessed in the 20th century; previously, they'd worn the same tartan as the other ranks) but this custom has no legal standing or weight. The Balmoral tartan is a special case, as briefly noted in this video. That one does seem to belong exclusively to the Royal Family; I'm not sure outsiders could get the material easily or obtain a kilt made in this without jumping thru some very small hoops.

PS: The Black Watch tartan (aka Government tartan; Universal tartan) seems to derive from an old Argyllshire pattern widely worn by Clan Campbell, hence Campbells to this day will wear this tartan as a clan tartan, as well as the other setts now named "Campbell". The Duke of Argyll typically wears the "Black Watch" tartan in a lighter hue ("ancient" or "muted" or whatever they now say) as his personal tartan. And I believe some clans wear the Black Watch sett as their official "hunting" tartan.

it's a complicated question,Bob,it was not banned to wear a kilt to everyone,just allowed to be worn if you was in a army regiment,and even then,it was completely disregarded by people that had more money,they could get away for wearing something that was restricted.

I don't get why people get offended by wearing different clans. I don't think the ancient highlanders would have family tartans. I am willing to bet that you got your 9 yards of single width fabric from the mill, chopped in half, and sewed the two pieces side by side to make double width and 4.5 yards of fabric for your great kilt. So by that logic, you would probably inherit Dad's great kilt, til it was so worn that it was used as other cloth, while you go back to the mill for new fabric in whatever colors you want or can afford.

Many military tartans are in fact clan tartans . I have a kilt in the MacGregor modern ( my mothers family is McGregor ) . A regiment in Ontario ,Canada uses the same tartan . My friends father was in the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa . I have a kilt in the same tartan , the Cameron of Erracht tartan . Black Watch is the Campbell tartan . A lot of regimental pipers wear the Royal Stewart tartan , The " universal tartan discussed in the video . There is next to no restriction for wearing "regimental " tartans
