I just watched this yesterday and think they needed to develop the story much better. What's a shame is that this is Disney's first movie with a main gay character, yet they made a fairly mediocre movie with an under developed character in Ethan as well. A couple more script re writes would've helped alot.

@@kingofnonation5843 it was at least 3 or 4 times they talked about it and the difference is at least they show Anna and Kristoff together and showed them interacting and developing their relationship throughout Frozen, they only showed Ethan and Diazo twice in this entire movie and thought just Ethan talking about his crush would be enough “representation” when they could’ve at least shown him and Diazo together more

I dig your reactions/first time watches. That's a pretty fair assessment of 'Strange World', honestly, even though I dug the movie myself, but it is - to me - very badly paced and has such an odd rhythm to it that doesn't fully immerse me into the film's setting or the characters' own worlds. It's probably an out-there opinion, but I've long felt that some animated movies need to be longer than just an hour and a half because movies like these jam-pack so much into them: An adventure story with multiple locations and stops/plot points, character arcs, themes, worldbuilding, etc. I know people will say "but kids can't sit for that long" (though they sit fine through a 2 1/2hr Marvel or Star Wars movie), but I say try to make something big and epic. Films like these create such cool worlds, but often times rush through them and we can't exist w/ the characters for a bit and breathe in the scenery. That all being said, I love it when Disney Animation tries cool things and I want them to keep trying, especially with the sci-fi action adventure genres. Also, as a queer, I loved the rep. The Ethan/Diazo stuff was very sweet, and it's great how no one living in the world of Avalonea bats an eye at such differences.

I totally agree with you. As a Disney fan, this was very disappointing. I felt like the story isn't smoothed out nicely as I thought it would be. The transition cutscene are bad timing exceptionally when there's a tender moment. The character development between the fathers and the son could've been more peak point of their journey rather than focusing on the hunt for the problem. It lacks the point of family and bonding moments. There wasn't lot of laughable moments but the blob definitely does help. I agree with the idea of have a dog character into this movie was too much. I kept thinking why they would put in an animal if there's another creature in the picture? It just felt like they tried so hard to make everything cute and funny. As for the expedition, it was hard to keep focused because there was no high stakes of feeling like the world depends on them. Lastly, the ending took me out and confusing. It would've been easier to look at it the ending as a "beginning" but the character doesn't know until until the actual ending where they find they're on a bigger creature. I don't know, it's disappointing and the story could have room for improvments and richer experiences.

I feel like for this to be the first movie with a main gay character, is so desponding. As you said yourself, we nearly got any scenes with them together, they had one in the beginning and in the end. They could have done so much better than that. It feels like the representation is there just because "they had to do it". Something like the film Luca would have been amazing gay representation.

regarding the gay character only: I thought it was cute while watching it, but... thinking about it afterwards made it clear to me that they just try out how they can include the rep without getting a backlash from the queer community and still change it up enough to sell it to conservative countries (every scene between them can be seen as 'best friends' if you simply change the dialogue). I'm queer, I'd love some representation, but the series Half bad: the bastard son and the devil himself was way better regarding that, sadly Netflix fucked up advertising and did not renew for a 2nd season :/

Agreed. They've turned something positive into something negative with that ideal. Wanting representation is NOT a bad thing, it's the way it's shown in the media that causes a rift I think and people who don't have the right intentions when putting these messages in their films or shows. I think this movie is sadly an example of writers who are disconnected with the world and did just put these messages in the movie for the sake of it without actually thinking of how to represent it with heart

Honestly I liked the movie. I went in with no knowledge whatsoever, no trailers. I only knew it existed and failed and that's it. I knew about the gay character and I thought it was Searcher but got pleasantly surprised. And as a gay guy myself I have to say it's good. It's obviously not the best representation BUT the best we've gotten so far as it was direct and not like "I don't love that way". Could they have more? Yes. But I feel like they haven't because Disney is still afraid of having a gay character. They could have literally made Ethan or Diazo a girl and nothing would have changed, it'd probably have gotten much better advertisement if they did. But here's hope that Disney does more with Strange World in order to flesh out what they could have improved on

Yeah, I mostly agree honestly. And the word I think that best describes the Diazo thing is gratuitous. He wasn't really 'part' of the story. Just sort of like a token you know. Actually you spoke so well after the movie I don't really have much to say. Ethan Clade was, like you said, checking off a box. I kind of wish that Diazo was an integral PART of the story AND that there was some sort of meaningful story arc. Anyway, you said everything I was thinking so, good job. The movie I would say was alright at best. Its problem is it reeks of being rushed through production. The film is not completely unwatchable but it needed more time to be worked on before being released but again that is a real problem the last few years where so much content gets rammed through to inevitably fill up streaming quotas. What your left with is this, something aggressively mediocre. Which is really not good when you include LGBT characters in it because than you get the online trolls and neckbeard reactionaries try to hijack the narrative with "the woke gay people ruin the movies. See we're right!". Which is complete nonsense as this movie would have been mediocre if they cut them completely or not. In this transitionary period where LGBT themes are being included in major films more they can't just use them as window dressing to make your films seem deeper than .they really are. You just give the right-wing idiots fodder to bash them more. @MKF30 Sorry you had to delete all your nice comments, you keep deleting them before I can reply.
