As a diabetic I generally don’t crave sweets and actively try to avoid them, but sometimes there’s this new flavor I have just GOT to try and it all goes down hill. The problem is that sugar is literally in everything we consume. I cannot go to a grocery store and randomly grab something without finding sugar in it. Even the “sugar free” stuff is actually loaded with sugar and is unsafe for diabetics. It’s really sad and makes having a medical problem a lot more complicated than it should be

Yeah it's criminal that you often cannot even choose, there simply is no brand of a product without sugar even though you can totally make it without any of it. My usual peanut butter brand disappeared - it only contained peanuts and a dash of salt. The "best" option now is 90% peanuts then sugar and palm oil. Why!

I know this comment was a year ago. But I wanted to chime in... Don't go down those evil Isles!!! You can always try to make things homemade, that way, you're putting in what you want and don't want. And replacing sugar with pineapple, beetroot, carrot, etc... I know the feeling though, you see a new flavour, or limited edition and you have to try it (FOMO!). Maybe having a food journal could be beneficial?

1st September 2019 I quit sugar by just saying to my mom: “Hey mom, can you avoid buying candy for me this weekend” Mom: “Of course” Next weekend I asked for the same thing, then I did it again, and again, and all of the sudden it was a norm that I didn’t eat candy and all of that unhealthy stuff. I started to look on the back of things like ketchup and realized that there were a looooot of sugar in it. So I stopped eating it, and I did the same for every other thing that had added sugar in it. Of course I didn’t avoid things like apples and grapes because they have sugar in it, because you want that sugar, your body *needs* sugar (The right type of sugar). I’m also kind of allergic to chocolate, if I eat just one single piece I can get a stomachache, throw up and things like that. So me not being able to eat chocolate has made this so much easier. Anyways, quitting sugar was one of the best things I’ve done in my life, it has made such a big difference in my life. If you have acne, quit sugar. I *had* pretty bad acne when I used to eat sugar, but when I quit, it nearly went away. Yes I do carve some sweet things sometimes but if I do that I either resist it or eat like 3 sugar free candies, and thb its not that difficult to not eat sugar, just make sure you don’t have it available. Quit sugar guys. A lot of good benefits will come as an award.

That's interesting! I also wonder if being less sensitive to bitterness has an evolutionary advantage. I know bitterness is supposed to deter you from eating poisonous foods, but is it possible for someone to be too sensitive to it? Personally, I have a hard time eating fruits, especially berries, because they are usually a little bitter. My dad, on the other hand, can eat really bitter foods and not even notice it, so he ends up eating healthier. That makes me think it could be more advantageous to be less sensitive to bitterness in our modern society, so that fruits and vegetables would taste better.

So could sugars that are put into products that don't need it, such as peanut butter, be companies way of controlling our dopamine levels and how much we eat? For instance, eating a spoon full of peanut butter with added dextrose and then eating a spoon full of organic peanut butter without dextrose. The added dextrose interfering with our dopamine levels and wanting to go back for more of the dextrose peanut butter as to oppose the organic peanut butter, where we don't necessarily feel that stronger want to eat more. (Unless I've totally and utterly misunderstood how dopamine works)

I think you've hit the nail on the head. They add sugar because it unconsciously drives us to consume more. @lunacouer
@lunacouer 5 жыл бұрын
@@sarahlund3872 I think it all depends on the sugar. Like with fruit, the fiber and process of breaking it down causes the sugar to release more slowly, so your insulin levels don't spike like they do with M&M's. But, dang they know how to get us. American sugary stuff is so crazy, over-the-top sugary. I tried to eat a Ding-Dong after about a month of healthy eating and had to spit it out, it was so sweet. Like, it made my teeth hurt. So yeah, they know what they're doing, and how folks need increased doses to get their fix, lol. I mean, I went through withdrawals and cravings when I cut refined sugar out. I guess it all comes down to finding a balance. It's just that short-term rewards almost always beat out long-term ones.

I'm just not a huge fan of sweet stuff. Then again, when I did an elimination diet in high school, I was off of cane sugar for about a year, and afterwards, everything sugary tasted bad. Now I use more stuff with stevia as a sweetener, or just fruit sugars, because honestly, I don't know why people add sugar to fruit, if it's ripe, it doesn't need it. Although I do add a little maple to cooked fruit if I'm making a sauce or pie.

Do you realize that the entire country would collapse if we were to do that? First off, deporting all those people would cost millions, possibly billions. It would also cut down our population by a crazy amount, which means not enough taxes being paid and collapse. Second, aside from that, the economic system would also collapse, over 97% of foods sold at an average supermarket contain some form of sugar. If we were to ban all those foods, the culinary market would be destroyed, and food being one of our main imports and exports, so would the country, and possibly the rest of the world.

As with almost anything, excessive consumption can be harmful. But also, the "self reward" mechanisms of the brain, from sex, to music, to laughing, all narrow down to a small number of chemical pathways. So, although comparing sugar to drugs can be a valid point, some of the stuff you see shared on social media is just misinformation (e.g. "scientists say giving sugar to babies it's EXACTLY THE SAME as injecting heroin into their eyeballs in a filthy roadside bathroom" or some nonsense like that...)

However, my lactose intolerance grew as I got older and I had about a 50/50 chance of getting sick when eating pastries that contained milk. So I just made the decision to stop eating sweets. And after awhile, I just stopped craving sugar. All I needed was my raisin bran in the morning and I was good. For example that Raisin Bran you mention has fruit and carbs in it. Raisins are dried fruit and fruit is a large source of NATURAL SUGAR. Also all carbohydrates, such as CEREALS are basically COMPLEX SUGARS which are broken down by the body during digestion into simpler sugars.

Dommy521 Controlling substances isn’t really the way to solve addiction. By controlling substances, supply and demand will come back to bite you. If you imprison addicts, literally nothing will happen other than the fact you will be punishing thousands of people for something that shouldn’t be a crime. To help with addiction, people should be educating children early on about the dangers of addiction and we should be giving genuine therapy to people who are addicted. When it comes to sugar, I don’t think there is much of a clear answer at the moment. You can’t really start diagnosing people with an addiction to a substance that is literally everywhere, and expect them to be able to avoid it.. It may even be a matter of controlling substances or stepping back and acknowledging the fact that the sugar industry is living off myths about health, but it’s an incredibly sticky situation at the moment (I mean, I just mentioned how substance control doesn’t solve problems but now I’m acknowledging it as a a solution? Some say extra virgin olive oil is the exception, but most commercial dressings do not use it. The fat free salad dressings usually have sugar. Sometimes a lot. james hannigan Heart disease is the number one killer and sugar is linked directly to it. We’ve known fat has nothing to do with heart disease for 50 years now. Sugar is much more deadly than alcohol. It just kills slower.

Blessed to be a sweet supertaster. A little goes a long way and yes, I can get tired of sugar if it's not mixed or buried in other flavors. Now a salty starch... (Another one!... And other one!)

Can you imagine the money we would save, the lives we would extend if we outlawed sugar? I mean i think tobacco should probably be outlawed first but it would still he a good idea to eliminate as much access to sugar as possible.

I think you mean unnatural sugar, honey. You can't outlaw sugar without outlawing things like fruits and vegetables.

Not quite everything ending in 'ose' is a sugar. One notable exception is cellulose which is a type of dietary fibre. Cellulose is not digested by the human metabolism and passes through unchanged.Its main purpose in the diet is to prevent constipation. It also slows down the absorption of other nutrients, and so can control hunger.
