Because you get more speed (10 A or about 5 times faster) as compared to micro USB (2.1 A at its highest) and yet do not compromise longevity and safety that much. But I do agree it ain't the middle ground, 20 W is about there (middle ground) in my opinion.

Super Fast Charging is more likely part of many smartphone OEMs ploy to force faster battery degradation, eventually leading customers to buy new phones more frequently since batteries are often non-user removable.
@adridell
@adridell 3 жыл бұрын
Batteries can perfectly be removed by users if they prepare it correctly by watching tutorials for their specific model. Also it isn't in any company's interest to sell batteries that last less than 2 years, since the minimum legal warranty in the EU is 2 years and batteries with excessive wear can be considered to be covered in it and have to be replaced for free to the customer. If not, there are plenty of third party repair shops that can replace batteries, and I'm not even taking about the ones where you have to pay. I work for a non profit organization called: repair cafés in Belgium, where people with repair skills and experience can volunteer to repair any electronics device even if it requires micro soldering for people who need that kind of help. You just gotta find the way to replace your batterie, but what you mean is that most people just don't want to waste their time doing so. Buying a new phone is much more satisfying and easy to do.

Even 30W are bad, 25W or less is more than enough.
@chengshengway
@chengshengway 3 жыл бұрын
@@dhanezoldak2908 Actually if you can keep a constant 18W till at least 80% battery (before dropping to 5W), it can charge 80% of 5000mAh (or 4000mAh) in 67 min. as compared to micro USB's 10.5W 115 min. Using a 18 W charger, if the power distribution can be as follows 0-50% 18W, 50-80% 13W, 80-100% 10W, then the time taken will be as follows, 41.6 min, 34.6 min, 30 min correspondingly, summing to a total of 1 hr 46.2 min to charge from 0-100% (5Ah battery). Even if they adopt Apple's technique of 5W for its 80% - 100% stretch, it will add another 22 min (2 hr 8.2 min in total). If charging only 3687 of the 5000 (or 73.74%) it will take (41.6+27.4 = 69 mins) which is about 52.1% faster (34.9% lesser) as 12 Pro Max takes about 1 hr 45 min to charge with 20(but actually 18)W USB-C PD. I know voltage and current from the mains (supply) fluctuate in real life, but the deviation is not that great. Source: iPhone 12/Pro Ultimate 0-100% Charger Test with MagSafe! Especially for a heavy user like me if the battery isn't full in half an hour I'll eventually damage it playing games plugged in. Like i did with my honor with 18w. I keep all fast charging options off on my Galaxy S20+ most of the time. I was using 5W chargers on my iPhone X and even after 3 years, the battery health is at 80%, which is much better than most manufacturers guidelines and even more impressive considering the hot weather I live in. I've been measuring capacity loss over 3 years cycling between a 70-30% SoC using a 15w charger... The original capacity 3 years ago was 3600mah... 3 years later using mid point short cycling the capacity measures 3500mah. The average Charging temperature is about 31°c. (When I first started the experiment I was cycling between 68-32%, which does fall in line with the roughly 3% capacity loss). The phone is an Huawei Mate 20 lite which at the time was one of the best phones for battery life (97h according to GSMARENA). Despite being advertised as having a 3750mah battery mine measured 3600mah out of the box (which is around the minimum spec in the small print). It still keeps up with some newer phones with 4500mah cells.

Very helpful when I got my first charger I got it from AliExpress and it was a Qualcomm charger but I noticed three things. 1. If it feels light it is a no no! They actually feel the same but the JBL I now use handles heat better and is slightly heavier. I even had to request the JBL because they were going to give me some random head. Quality in chargers is determined by weight because that means there's better insulation for heat dispersion. 2. 3.0 charges fast but the battery drain is significantly fast sometimes. The charger is black Typically I can last through most of the day watching KZbin videos checking emails and stuff so about 10pm I charge. If I stop charging overnight then I'll see if it helps make the battery last longer

This is actually a pretty good but a generic one for fast charging tech. For the people watching, hear me out, in this case of Xiaomi "120W": 1. The phone actually heats up but on a significantly shorter time than for example 18W which heats-up the phone on a much longer time in fast charging mode. 2. Charging has stages. The phone only heats-up for example 0 to 60% which is safe for batteries designed to fast charge. 3. Charging alone, fast charging is pretty safe. The main problem is external loads given such as users giving additional load such as gaming during charging which is not recommended. 4. Heavy gaming incurs more battery degradation compared to fast charging as it can subject the phone on high temps on a much longer time. 5. Never generalize charging tech based on this video. There are technologies that has different charging techniques such as using low voltage-high-current chargers that can charge a phone on a much lower temps than what is shown from Xiaomi/Qualcomm/USB PD. Heat is still the main issue of these tech but it's only half of the equation because you should also consider the State of Charge. For example: You can pretty much subject the battery to 45°C until 60% charge but you should never do so when it's on 100% when it is most sensitive to higher temps. Characteristics differ especially when a battery designed to fast-charge is being used so a generic advice that only considers one side of the equation might only apply on old phones or phones not designed to fast-charge but has standard batteries. Also providing a fast charger OOTB is a pretty good deal especially when there are phones with fast charging capability but chose not to provide fast charger or even no charger at all. An in depth approach could be a pretty good follow-up video, also include BBK's tech and also temperature reading during charging is also pretty good especially when laid out in a graph.

You are missing the key reason that heat degrades a batteries life. Battery life is affected by dendrite formation. Dendrite formation occurs faster at higher temperatures. The higher the batteries temperature while charging the sooner dendrites will form and compromise the battery life. I assume other things are also going on, but I am no expert. Rather than trying to figure out a compromise charger power it is better to decide when you actually need your phone charged. Many of us charge our phone overnight. So a low power charger is absolutely fine. Less heat, longer battery life. The same applies if you are sitting at your desk etc not using your phone. If it has a long time to charge then use a low power charger. Just use a fast charger when you are in a rush. I have followed this philosophy for my S10+. I have had it since March 2019 and the battery is still excellent. Usually about 80% when I get home at night and about 50% by the time I go to bed. That's with heavy usage in the evening.

Tesla uses the same logic of charging in parallel. you're not gonna notice a major hit in battery life if the temperature is within the recommended battery ratings. The best you can do is let the battery stay between 20 to 80 percent battery capacity so that it lasts long like Asus does using software limiting the charge up to that percent. (The only degradation increase is that two batteries in parallel are degrading over time)

controlling the heat is wild card in this equation. My experience from Xiaomi phones is that the phone will throttle charge rate if 35°C is reached from my observation from 18w and 30w designs down from 3000mah and 5000mah to 2000-2,500mah range and further reduces the rate to 1500 if 40°C is reached. 20-55% super fast charging is most efficient, charging rate and speed maxes out in this range 70% the xiaomi charge control chip will reduce charge rate to 2000mah to minimize stress on the battery 90% further reduce to 1000-1500mah to protect the battery. 100% the control chip cuts the charging if it detects the phone is idle. Xiaomi and Qualcomm are on the bleeding edge of fast charging R&D

Chargers? What on earth are you talking about? I haven't seen a phone charger in decades. Every phone (except Apple's old ones with proprietary connectors) uses USB to deliver power to the phone. There _hopefully_ is a battery charger _inside_ the phone. USB power itself has absolutely nothing to do with battery charging, it's just a way to convey DC power from Point A to Point B. Yes, overheating your battery cells (or just cells because there's only one in most phones, so not a battery) is bad. Remember battery bloat? Those of us who were adults 5 years ago, and had to deal with the problem did it by dumping the flawed QuickCharge 2.0 system and charging our replacement (or repaired) phones at lower power rates. We wouldn't have had to do that if replaceable cells were still a feature, but the sad fact is that phones are getting worse as consumers become idiot zombies conditioned to salivate over arbitrary and frankly silly traits that almost always make them more expensive and easier to fail or break. Some years ago I coined the word "bignumberitis" to describe the mindless consumer obsession over ever-increasing (and sometimes decreasing) numbers used to market consumer products. One example of bignumberitis is the marketing and knee-jerk buying of cameras with more "megapixels" when there's no practical need for them, and when in some cases like the infamous "108 MP" camera that was really just a 12 MP camera, with photosites being renamed "pixels" as a marketeering ploy. With phones getting ever-smaller and more fragile (and why?) the idea of dumping power into them at a _faster_ rate should be abhorrent, so why is it done? To give mindless consumers yet another metric to lust over. Caveat emptor.
