@@powerincarnate6783 Naw. Westerns are intrinsically tied to a specific era and aesthetic, making them much more one dimensional. Superhero movies on the other hand are perfectly malleable for big screen story telling b/c at their core, they’re just stories about good vs evil. I think it's several factors. There's too many superhero movies since the pandemic started that are very mediocre or mixed in their response despite maybe being successful at the box office. I liked Multiverse of Madness, but it along with Black Widow, Thor: Love and Thunder, Eternals, and Quantumania have mixed to negative responses based on the reactions I have heard both in my personal life and read online. The Disney+ shows largely worsen this issue. But also, right now it costs like $17-$20 for ONE movie ticket, I think a lot of people are picking and choosing what they see now. I know for me personally, I did not see Shazam 2 because the trailers for it seemed so generic and lacking what I liked about the original. I think people just want solid films with great characters they can emotionally connect with.
@melancholyentertainment Жыл бұрын
I completely agree, and with the mention of Shazam 2 and trailers I’d like to say marketing isn’t that great lately either. Most people probably didn’t even know Shazam 2 came out unless they’re on Twitter or something even though general audiences loved Shazam and would have likely lined up for a sequel if it were marketed properly. WB has always had a problem with marketing their DC movies ever since the aftermath of Justice League (looking at you Birds of Prey). And I think it’s only gotten worse with all they’ve had going on behind the scenes. Hopefully the new DCU is marketed better at least but we’ll have to wait and see.

I agree. People don't want to consider inflation's a factor, but it most certainly is. And despite internet culture, Hollywood forgets that word of mouth can still make or break your film. You add in the fact that the general public and fans (like myself) are annoyed with the recent drop in quality of the MCU and...is it any wonder why Quantumania tanked. Hopefully, with Iger zeroing in on Marvel now they can get back on track. It's not too late to save the franchise, in my opinion. They just need to pump the brakes on this convoluted Multiverse Saga and let the characters have their own adventures again...then you can start setting up the multiverse stuff in the credit scenes (like they used to).

I do believe in the fatigue because it's not necessarily about people not wanting to see these movies anymore, but is more about people not caring as much as a couple of years before, and it isn't really a matter of quality, I'd say if a movie like Shazam 2 or Ant-Man Quantumania would have come out back in 2008 or 2012, 2014, they would have been huge. But now, it's like "Do I really need to see a Shazam movie or another Ant-Man movie?", "Will I miss anything if I skip the first two weeks?", "Will I be left out of the conversation?", and the answer is no, there is no conversation other than the box office or the bad reviews. No one is talking about the next aventures of Billy and his Shazam family, or how does Ant-Man's new chapter fits into the MCU saga. People don't care about those questions anymore, they just see there's a new superhero movie available and they go to check it out only to find out the movie isn't really good. Now and then there comes a superhero movie that is actually really good, like Joker or The Batman, but that's just a movie that happens to be good. What I'm trying to say is that at the peak of the superhero fever you could afford to have mediocre movies like Shazam and Ant-Man and still do good at the box office or atleast have an exciting conversation about the movie itself, but now they have to be masterpieces only to break even or be talk about for more than a week. That's weird.

I think a fatigue is starting to set in, but not for us, I think this fatigue is setting in at the production level. It really feels like, with each of these new films, the people that made them did not really *want* to make them. How could these movies be so lackluster recently other than the filmmakers and staff no longer having that *drive* that has people willing to pour their heart and soul into their work. If it is true, that these movies are being made by people who either no longer wants to make them, or by people who don't care enough about the material to really try right from the get-go, it 100% makes sense that we, the audience, would feel that lack of care intuitively when watching these movies. Edit: there is the studio control component to consider as well. It might be entirely possible that everyone that makes these movies really do want to try their best and make these movies as good as possible, but are being severely limited by the studio with endless lists of new prerogatives to satisfy their employers (and further to satisfy their investors), like releasing movies way before their actually done and being satisfied by lackluster writing and CGI to make the difference.

I do think there is a hint, a small hint of Superhero fatigue. I still love Superhero movies and I've loved them since the Original Raimi movies, but people just don't talk about Superhero movies like they used to. On the Internet and in real life. Like most people I know who were huge fan when it came to tye MCU like 6-7 years ago say that they haven't seen anything since Endgame. It reminds me of when David Tennant left as the Doctor, I still watched Doctor who and so did many other people, but there was a drop of intrest when it came to a lot of fans and the general public. That's not me saying Matt Smith wasn't popular because he sure as hell was, but people did slowly stop watching. And when it came to Peter Capaldi and Jodie Whittaker, unfortunately the intrest was pretty much gone. I think that will happen with Superhero movies and MCU, I think after the Multiverse Saga has finished the intrest will basically be at it's lowest so far. I think Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars will having everyone talking again, just like people did with Day of the Doctor. But then it will drop after that. And maybe (hopefully) a studio, even if it isn't Marvel, can bring Superhero movies back. But I don't think that will happen until 2038. I think Superheros movies have to take a break for people to miss them. Same thing also happened with Westerns, they were massive back in the day, then died out and now surprisingly more recently that type of genre does have people talking again. Westworld and Deadwood and even Yellowstone has similar vibes and people love/loved those shows.

I agree. the internet really seems to like doing that, saying things are certain ways just because they want them to be and not picking up on nuance and stuff like that. I think part of the "Superhero Fatigue" thing includes the shows. Yes, you were speaking just about the movies, but I think most who say that also include the shows as well. People also forget that the Boys, Invincible, TMNT, and Walking Dead are all Superhero and/or Comic projects (mostly cause they aren't really Marvel or DC), and people don't have fatigue with them. You mention that it isn't Fatigue, but don't really give any other options as to what it could be, here are my thoughts on that. Marvels problem isn't Superhero Fatigue, it's three things unrelated to fatigue, 1) they are hesitant to produce R-rated content even though they should have been doing so since Phase 4, especially with the immense popularity of R-rated Comic/Superhero stuff like the Boys and Invincible and their rival DC has many popular R-rated projects and has said they will be doing more. All this causes them to make their already loyal and built in audience feel left out and abandoned and are leaving and such cause Marvel isn't making content suitable for them and their age group and such. 2) they are interfering too much with creatives, they aren't letting creatives create. Multiverse of Madness definitely had some "Raimiisms" and such in it, but it felt like Raimi wasn't able to do everything he wanted to do with the movie and what may have helped the movie, and I would love to see what Derriksons pure horror take for the movie was going to be, or like Moon Knight, it felt like the creatives wanted to do so much more with the show but were unable to because of interference and such. 3) they don't give their projects enough time. Many of the complaints about the Disney+ shows fall into the category of "if it only had 1 or 2 more episodes this show would be so much better than it is" and many of the complaints about the movies fall into the category of "if the movie only had like 30-40 minutes more of runtime it would be better", and aside from a couple exceptions, that seems to hold true, Multiverse of Madness, Love and Thunder, and Quantumania were all right around 2 hours, when most of Marvel's other stuff is around 2 1/2 hours or 2 hours 40 minutes, and those three aren't as liked as most everything else, and the shorter runtimes seem to hurt the projects. DC has 2 issues. 1) the old regime handcuffed them. the pre-Gunn and Safran regime had no clue what to do, so they pretty much put a ban of "if a character appears in a movie or is planned to appear in a movie they can't show up in the show and vice versa" and for many projects they couldn't figure out how to do the stories and such and didn't continue things when they should have and didn't end things when they should have. Not to mention we still are in their influence until Aquaman 2, so that's why DC is continuing to not be good. 2) the new regime. Don't get me wrong, in Gunn we trust, what I'm saying is that because they came in and such many are not seeing the point in watching the upcoming movies because it's not something the new regime is using or doing or whatever, whether the project be good or not. Sony's Spider-Man stuff really only has 1 issue, they are just making things to be able to hold onto Spider-Man for as long as they can. Sony doesn't really have any other franchises aside from Spider-Man that they can hang their hat on, so they are going all in on it and just doing whatever they can to hold onto the character and such, to varying results. There's probably other things that can be included in those as well, but those are what comes to mind and such.

I think most people who want to see superhero/marvel fatigue happen at the box office don’t actually want the whole genre to disappear. I guess the main issue I have right now is the X-Men were always my favorite Marvel franchise, and I really feel like we're twiddling our thumbs until we get them in the MCU.

Totally agree with you about the X-Men. I was in the minority who preferred a good FOX X-Men movie over any generic MCU movie. I don’t care about the characters currently in the MCU with a few exceptions. I don’t feel the need to see them in theatre, especially when the movies are available to stream so soon.

As a formerly loyal supporter of the MCU in theatres, I haven't gone since before the pandemic. I live far enough away that it takes most of a day to go (even more of a risk in the winter time, which is at least November to April here), and the costs of everything (including gas) are so much higher now that I no longer consider my old "trips to the city" a fun option for a Saturday. It used to be that every few months, I'd drive down just before stores open, hit a fast food place, check out some stores for CDs (which I no longer buy since my new vehicle and new laptop don't accept them) and DVDs (I love physical media but I haven't seen as many films of late that I really want to own, especially with Disney+ and other streaming services) or video games (only a few have come out in recent years that really interest me, especially not at $90ish), catch a film or two, then hit another fast food place on the way out. Nowadays, it just seems too expensive and annoying, so no theatres for me (even for the ones I might've wanted to see, like Wakanda Forever)

I think, for my part of the conversation, that Disney and DC will eventually sort of wind down their cinematic universes - we'll keep getting Batman and Spiderman movies - and a taste of an expanded universe here and there ... but it will slowly shrink over time, until we all just look at it an realize it's been reduced.

I think superhero fatigue has happened to an extent but not to any significant extent yet. The new Shazam and Antman movie struggling doesnt mean much as both of them are movies in ultimately middling franchises. Like sure Shazam 1 and Antman 1-2 were Ok movies but that's ultimately it, so them not doing so well now isn't really that surprising and has little to do with superhero fatigue.

Guardians 3 is 100% the litmus test here. The last SIX Dceu films have not been profitable. Marvel is seemingly also on a bit of a downwards trend financially. In the first 3 phases of the MCU, only one film didn't make a profit, The Incredible Hulk. But since Endgame, there have been another 3. If Guardians 3, 6 years after it's predecessor, and loved by critiics and audiences fails or succeeds, THEN we can talk about the genre as a whole

I work with some younger folks, like early 20s, and to me the big think I think is that that demographic specifically doesn't care as much for superhero movies as people in my demo did when they first started making a really big splash 10-15 years ago. Because young people like to find their own stuff, and superhero movies were already established and popular since they were kids. So for them yeah, fatigue is one way to put it. But I still think there is a huge audience outside that demo, both older and younger, and given a good movie I think even those 20 something's can be brought in because comic stories and characters can be quite interesting and fun.

I don’t think that superhero fatigue is happening. What I believe is happening is that the movies we’re viewing aren’t growing and evolving past the generic “every hero is quippy” formula as we, the viewers are growing and evolving. Think about it this way…. if you’ve been eating the same cereal since you were five every morning, eventually that cereal just becomes a routine habit and loses it spark the more you eat it regularly.

"Superhero fatigue" had like a chance to be real around 2008, which is around when the so-called genre bubble was expected to burst after a round of very high profile superhero movies + a glut of fairly mediocre wannabes. Which is effectively how you expect fatigue to set in. I just feel it's important to point that out because 2008 was FIFTEEN YEARS AGO. This is not a genre anymore, this is not a trend. It has outlasted the Western boom, it has outlasted the Disney Renaissance, it has outlasted several huge film distributors, and it has outlasted TWO generational target audiences! It only needs to last for a handful more years and it'll have outlasted the entire Silent Era! This is NOT how genre bubbles work, and people need to give up on hoping that tomorrow it magically will.

Superhero movies are obviously not going to "pop", but I do think they're going to slip over the next few years, and will eventually stop being the dominant type of blockbuster they were in the 2010s. 2020 killed theatrical superhero movies, not one cracked the top 10 highest grossing movies. 2021 had No Way Home, but they'll never be able to do that again. 2022, again had three other blockbusters in front of superheroes. We'll have see how 2023 plays out, but Quantumania will definitely not stay on top. This does not imply death, but to me at least, it does imply slowly diminishing returns that will eventually add up.

It’s not super hero fatigue, it’s mediocrity fatigue. I see this situation the same way I do Star Wars: you get all these bad movies and mediocre TV shows that get people super disappointed, so when something like Andor comes along it’s legitimately exciting, which proves that there still life in Star Wars as a property. Same applies to superheroes. The reason that the Batman, the suicide squad, and peacemaker were so well liked was because they broke the mold of being not very good. I have no doubt that guardians three and across the spider verse might stand a chance of doing that for marble. I’m not tired of superheroes at all, I’m tired of these stories not having a clue where they’re going. And sure, we could benefit from more original properties getting a chance, but it’s not like there aren’t plenty of independent films to go around that people could be watching instead of complaining.

Even ignoring the quality issues, the biggest problem is oversaturation. The MCU drew a lot of its success off the myth that you “must watch everything”. When they were releasing 2-3 movies a year, it’s not too much to ask a casual fan to “watch it all”. When, in the same timespan, they’re now releasing 2-3 movies PLUS half a dozen TV shows, that’s just way too much to expect a casual fan to keep up with. In a vacuum, there’s nothing necessarily wrong with this. However, when they’re spending hundreds of millions of dollars on these movies/shows, Disney CANNOT afford for the majority of fans to only watch what interests them.

I LOVED superhero movies, the MCU was my fan-dream come true, and I am burnt out by the quadruple threat of Doctor Strange 2, Thor 4, Black Panther 2, and Ant Man 3 (actually liked a lot of Dr. Strange, but forcing Wanda into it was a reminder of studio edicts ruining otherwise good movies). I literally only care about Guardians 3 and Deadpool. I'll wait for word-of-mouth on The Marvels and The Flash. What I'm trying to is that GotG 3 is sort of its own entity from the rest of the MCU at this point, at least in my brain.

I think if a “superhero fatigue” is happening it’s less people being seriously sick of superhero movies and their prevalence, and more indifference than anything else in the sense that getting all of these superhero movies isn’t as exciting as it used to be. I still wouldn’t call it a bad thing, I love superheroes and comic books and seeing my childhood heroes on the big screen ESPECIALLY in a shared universe like the comics is amazing. HOWEVER, at a certain point it kind of becomes like comics have over the decades where you don’t really feel the need to catch every one as they come out, you just kind of see the ones you’re interested in or pick them up later for cheaper. And I think that’s perfectly fine. If they want them to be big events again they need to slow down tremendously, perhaps after a break even, but them coming out like they are isn’t necessarily bad either. I don’t need to see every superhero movie anymore and I don’t need them all to be big events.

Which is a bummer because there are still characters I still very much can’t wait to see make their silver screen debut. Especially since DC seems to be ramping up. Long story short, now that The Infinity War Saga has concluded and the Arrowverse is soon to be no more, the bubble I think has been burst a bit. Definitely finding myself picking and closing which ones I really want to see in theaters a little more than I used to.

Aside from the one-off of Sam Raimi, Marvel Studios thinks they are big enough to get away with C-list talent and total unknowns. I've been hearing that we've been entering "Superhero fatigue" since Wandavision. People aren't tired of superheroes, they're tired of bad movies that reuse the same formulas over and over again hoping that people will like it because they have a comic character show up. In Quantumania's case, Marvel really thought that Modok and Kang would be enough to keep people happy, but they should know that's not enough now. We need well written stories and actually well developed characters to enjoy.

I kinda really disagree with this argument. I agree that the two most recent superhero films were from series that have underperformed in the past, and I agree that the real evidence might be if Guardians 3 under performs. But I think it’s unfair to say that there’s no trend until a bad action movie does better in the box office than a good super hero movie. That just seems like really specific goal post placement that doesn’t really make sense imo.

I don't feel fatigue at all over it, but I worry about the "bubble bursting" just by the pure size of the MCU in particular. At the beginning, a sequel would come out pretty quickly after the first (Iron Man) and could follow on closely from the same story. Not much time had passed, and the consequences could be felt. Now, just because there are so many projects, it takes so long for a sequel (Doctor Strange is a great example) that the consequences have faded. Setting up Mordo at the end was a great tease, but it just wouldn't work after a 6-year gap, plus a 5-year Blip.

I also don't think there is fatigue of the concept of Superhero stuff. It is just that the diversity of it hasn't been as apparent. I don't like the MCU. I never emotionally resonated with the characters. But, I fell in love with Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey and her own show. I fell in love with Young Justice and Invincible telling more mature stories. I am also the world's sole Venom 1 and Morbious fan. And a variety more tales keeps me on the edge of my seat waiting for more. Super Hero media as a whole just needs to appeal to its niches a bit more.

and this film genre will still "die" like the western due to oversaturation
@andrewryan2400-z3d Жыл бұрын
@@thekittenthatwantschicken8018 There are so many factors as to why Marvel movies aren’t making the money they used to. Lackluster projects, films like Thor 4, Doctor Strange 2 & Ant Man 3 were not beloved by most people, they didn’t receive good word of mouth so of course they didn’t do so well. Like, if these films were the opposite, if they were well received by both audiences & critics they for sure would’ve made more money. Also, the negative reception of the those movies also affect the actual good movies like Wakanda Forever & Guardians 3, those movies did well but they would’ve made way more money if it weren’t for the films that came before. It’s more expensive to go to the theaters nowadays, it’s not how it was 5 years go. So, audience’s are now more picky with the films they want to see. People go to the movies to have a good time, they are not gonna waste their time and money on a bad film. 3. You have these other big blockbusters coming out the same time as each other, the reason mission impossible didn’t make that much money because it came out the same time as Barbie & Oppenheimer. Both those films had massive hype with all the memes online and it overshadowed MI. Even if these films are really good people are not gonna see all of them in the theater.

I do think there is certainly some fatigue somewhat due to over saturation, but mostly due to a lack of quality.. Well it affect the heavy hitters? To some extent as Black Panther did not perform as well as the first. I just think mildly successful franchises like Ant-Man and Shazam will really be the ones to take the hit. I think less will be likely to run out to the theater to see them. In other words it probably go back to the way it was between say 2000 to 2007. Heavy hitters do well. Small ones do okay or poorly

I think that, in order for us to say there's fatigue, we should wait for the box office of the flash and gotg 3,but right now, I think people are more selective. I mean, going to the cinema is expensive, so, if we follow that logic, a normal person probably thinks "Should I go to see this movie? When I already know what superhero movies offer? Or should I save that money for other stuff/movie? Maybe is better for me to wait for that movie to come to streaming (Hbo max/Disney+)"

I think the definitive tell if fatigue is real and/or Marvel/DC is done is if Guardians 3 reviews well but does not make more money than the second one did WITHOUT factoring inflation. If it doesn't exceed $775 million at the box office then it's definitively over. If you think that's too much, then consider GotG2's $775mil in 2017 dollars is equal to $952mil due to inflation.
@BakumanLakuman Жыл бұрын
I think people are confusing fatigue with saturation. There is a lot of saturation, but fatigue feels personal at this point, culturally. Like Nando said, most people claiming fatigue want to be done with superheroes. On a tangential note, there needs to be more films and shows outside of Marvel and DC that tackle superheroes. We need different takes. The reason superheroes as a concept can feel recycled sometimes is because Marvel and DC are the only ones really telling those stories. Where are the filmmaker equivalents of Dark Horse and Image? Brightburn and Hancock are the only superhero-esque things that come to mind outside of the Marvel and DC spheres (I really enjoy Hancock, but never saw Brightburn.) Also, I want to see more risks from Marvel and DC. She-Hulk only barely felt like a legal comedy to me. I would like a show that leans fully into horror and just happens to have superheroes, or is exclusively a tragedy. There are elements of these things, but only elements. They're rarely the core and more like ornaments.

I always held this opinion that superhero and marvel fatigue are not real. Because as you said that "Genre" is just too wide, there are too many ideas and possibilities for it to have fatigue. However, I think Marvel (im saying this as a massive MCU fan) and DC have sat on their laurels. I think they got too comfortable, I really liked Phase 4 but I could tell there were some films, shows, or just general choices which felt like "We don't need to go all out right now, we're gonna be around for 100 years so let's spend a whole film setting up something else down the line" basically they were making filler, and I think they KNEW it was filler. this isn't really an insult to it, i liked some of the filler stuff, I ENJOYED Thor 4, MoM, She-Hulk. But some of it didnt feel like "We want to tell a concise story" and instead "We can just kinda do something generally fun and leave the more intense stories for later" which, honestly it makes sense, they just came off the back of Phase 3 and both in and out of universe they needed a break.. to just kinda process what had happened. Phase 4 set up the future and had to finish the past. But I think my point is shown with MoM and Quantumania MoM was fun, I really LIKED MoM, but it didn't feel like a Doctor Strange Movie or a Scarlet Witch movie or an American Chavez movie.. it dealt with Stephens connection to his wife but even that was like a secondary plot point. this film wasn't meant to satisfyingly conclude Wandas story, it wasn't meant to evolve Dr. Strange besides some arbitrary barrier of love. It was a fun movie.. but it didn't go far enough. It didn't come into it with this single vision to complete. If it wanted to focus on Dr. Strange being too attached to the past and his ex? go for it, use the multiverse to tell a story of love that can never work, that would have been an awesome film. want to use this film to finish up Wandas story? Okay go for it, use Wanda and actually explain her reasoning and don't jump ahead. Want this to just be about introducing America? Okay! Do that, specifically focus on America but it was scattered because.. well.. Wanda will show up again, so will Strange, so will America.. so why spend all this time focusing on just one when we can set up multiple things! Same with Quantumania, it didnt focus on Scott and his daughters relationship, it didnt focus on Kang, MODOK, it didnt focus on family, it didnt focus on the quantum realm. yes all those bits and pieces WERE IN the film, but they didn't focus on ONE. "They didn't go far enough" is a pretty good way of explaining this MoM and Quantumania could have been FANTASTIC instead of good and meh, but I think Marvel just kinda.. got used to the popularity, they got used to the power and hype. They stopped trying to make a great movie that sets up things and started making set up which they tried to turn into good movies into varying effects. Wakanda Forever is really good cause it has a goal, it has a reason, a single point to focus on. Riri and stuff was added in to the side but that was just bonus content to the main point of the film. Shang Chi was also good because it did this, it focused on one thing and set up stuff in the background I love the MCU and i think they've realised their problem and will be trying to fix it. So in a few years I think people will realise they're not going anywhere.. but they gotta fix their issues first. the MCU isn't bad, it's just filled with so many mixed bags it doesnt seem like its worth it for the viewers

To lump all superhero movies together is as asinine and nonsensical as lumping all comedies or dramas together. We will never "fatigue" of a genre, each movie can be different. We can desire fresh or experimental takes on superheroes or just solid film writing, but it's not the umbrella that is the problem. You can have teen superheroes or horror superheroes or sci Fi superheroes or detective or Western.... Do you see how stupid it is to say the well has run dry? Guardians of the Galaxy is less a superhero franchise and more a space opera. It sits within the MCU and there was Avengers cross-over but the 2 GotG films so far have been essentially stand-alone affairs. The GotG characters aren't really superheroes either. They demonstrate moral ambiguities and selfish motives that put them more like "reluctant heroes" than "superheroes". Super Hero fatigue isn't happening. A bunch of mediocre movies have been made so they haven't done well. Shazam was not a big hit so Shazam 2 doing poorly isn't a surprise. It's a lesser known character that isn't part of some larger cinematic storyline. If the larger DC universe storyline was actually working, then more people would want to see it. Quantumania had a 100mil opening and if it was a good film it would have done even better due to positive word of mouth. The writing for these movies across the board has gotten worse.

For me the biggest issue is the lack of surprise and the hesitation to drop big reveals when the iron is hot. Imagine if they revealed mutants with Ursa Major in Black Widow or the if stark tower was revealed to be the Baxter building at the end of which ever spider man movie had Spider-Man fly through that atrium. most of the big reveals come outside of the films during the slates now.
