Excellent video. Taiwan does not need to declare independence. ROC in Taiwan has always been separate and independent from the PRC. This is why majority Taiwanese like me support status quo = de facto independence as ROC. UN & international community just need to recognize this fact.
@planetbell111 ай бұрын
Most Taiwanese I know say the same thing - you are de facto independent so there is no need to push for a change. Hopefully China will get more moderate after Xi and you can work together more easily. Thanks for your comments!
UN & international community does not recognize Taiwan as an independent country because the UN and the world don't do illegal thing most of the time. Taiwan legally belongs to China, say so by 100% of the countries of the world and the UN. AND the PRC is the legal representative of China including Taiwan say so by the UN and the countries of the world that represent 99% of the people of the world!

As a fellow American. I think American should know that Taiwan legally belongs to China. In 1895 China lost a war with Japan and Taiwan was ceded to Japan by China in a Treaty. This legally establish that Taiwan legally belongs to China before 1895 and after 1895 belong to Japan. And in World War II Japan lost and Taiwan was return to China in another treaty, The Sino-Japanese Peace Treaty. Chiang kai shek's ROC government who was consider to be the legal government of China at the time represented China in accepting Taiwan back for China. And then there is of course the 1943 Cairo Declaration, Potsdam Declaration, Japan instrument of Surrender. It is one of the best legal claim a country have over a territory in world history. And currently the legal government and representative of China is the PRC. You can have any type of legal debate any type of legal discussion and you will come to the conclusion that Taiwan legally belongs to China it is that simple. If you anyone have a legit legal counter argument that Taiwan do not legally belongs to China I be happy to hear it. And finally as American we should ask ourselves this if we lost Alaska to the Japanese and it was return to us by treaty as a result of WWII. How hard would we fight to get Alaska back?

This video is well-made. Good job!! I come from Taiwan, whenever we are in discussions with Chinese friends about whether Taiwan is a country, mutual respect is crucial. Even if our opinions differ, we should strive to understand and respect each other's positions and feelings.

Good point. Taiwan and China should be close allies. I think if China wanted to make peace they could be a partner, but until the CCP goes away I'm not sure that can happen. Thanks for your comments and compliments!

Something to clarify the video: The Qing Dynasty did not have an official rule on Taiwan only after it sent Qing soldiers to invade Taiwan in 1880's and officially annex Taiwan as a Qing province for only 8 years 1887-1895 despite controlling only 1/3 of the island on Chinese immigrants land occupation. For centuries, the Qing had no interest in ruling Taiwan directly and even banned the people from migrating to Taiwan for fear of facing Taiwanese indigenous people who bravely defended their ancestral land. Despite the ban, Chinese migration continued for centuries and became settlers in Taiwan. The settlers had been attracted by the job opportunities from the maritime trade of the Taiwan western colonizers who controlled parts of the island. The Chinese migration from Fujian was documented by the Fujian local government which kept the record of Chinese people. So in summary, Taiwan had never been officially part of China only a later period of 8 years before ceding Taiwan in perpetuity to Japan. Taiwan was officially part of Japan 1895-1951. After the 1951 treaty, Taiwan was free and independent for self-determination momentarily under the continued military occupation of ROC once assigned as a proxy occupier of the US military aftermath of WWII. Taiwan is now officially a democratic sovereign country of the Taiwanese-elected RoC government serving the people in Taiwan territories. Therefore China had no right to interfere in other country's affairs and the claim is illegal without basis.

Mainland China and Taiwan Island are countries that are part of a nation called "China". Also, everyone needs to know that PRC doesn't rule Taiwan, and ROC doesn't rule Mainland since 1949, in other words ROC in Taiwan has always been separate and independent from the PRC.

Every time I hear Americans complain about Taiwan, I think of Puerto Rico. Citizens of Puerto Rico are American citizens that pay Federal taxes, and even serve in the U.S. military. But the U.S. refuses to recognize them as a U.S. state, allow them to vote in national elections, or give them much (if any) support in natural disasters. Why do Americans have so much support for Taiwan while at the same time ignore Puerto Rico? Hypocrites...
@planetbell111 ай бұрын
Fair point. The U.S. should make Puerto Rico a state or give it independence. I guess the big difference is we aren't threatening to bomb them. Moreover, Puerto Ricans and U.S. citizens. They can move to the U.S., they get social security, etc.

Planet Bell "Although the United Nations officially declares Taiwan to be part of China and only 14 countries recognize Taiwanese independence " That is wrong! The UN did not declare Taiwan as part of China. UN 2578 was a resolution for the representative government of China only and Taiwan was not part of it. Historical fact according to international law, Taiwan and Japan were united as one country after 1895. Taiwan gained freedom and independence from Japan (not China) after the 1951 SFPT. So from that time, Taiwan has been a sovereign country for more than 70 years. China's claim on Taiwan has been illegal without basis since the 1895 treaty. You should research first and stop adding the communist disinformation propaganda.

I’m personally a big fan of SELF DETERMINATION… I know there lots of actual facts, bs facts, lies, misinfo etc… I just think it’s funny how we all have opinions that we want others to respect, but at the same time many of those opinions are how we feel about other people… in theory allowing those people self determination and respecting their opinions about themselves is most in line with Americans opinions about themselves yet fail to see they’re denying others that right. Cognitive dissonance at its best! That’s becoming our number 1 export… behind bullets and bombs…
