@@aim_da_idiot666 The media blows up the idea of a nuclear bomb. When you drop a nuke sides are radicalized, either completely with you or destined to destroy all of what remains of you. People join against you. Nuclear bombs in the 21st century bring more people against you, not repel them. A nuclear bomb is not something you can casually drop. It requires perfect planning, ahead of time foresight to predict consequences, and have defenses stationed at people that can oppose you instead of fighting the battle you are now.

I'm also curious about the thoughts of people living in Taiwan. But I think I can say with confidence that no one wants war, not even the mainland. I feel the desire to unify China is as legitimate as the desires to unify Germany and unify Ireland. Just like those Germans and Irish, the Chinese don't want to see any more bloodshed. m(_ _)m

It's interesting that you did not mention Japan's commitment to the defense of Taiwan and their participation in the Quad. They are usually discounted, but their presence in or near the Yellow Sea would require China to maintain some PLA force in the North, limited what can be devoted to Taiwan. In addition, India's membership in this pretty much assures that the moment China engages Taiwan their oil is cut off, meaning that the attack would have to be lightning fast. It's not just the US that China needs to worry about, in other words, and that is significant.

Generally speaking, there will be no war in Taiwan. Taiwanese people do not really want to break away from China. They prefer to stay between the United States and China and reap benefits from both sides. That's what they've always done, and they're very smart people. The quarrels will be loud, but the risk of war is very small. The United States is escalating tensions across the Taiwan Strait in an attempt to trigger a local war and force international investors, such as BASF, to leave their safe haven in China and return to their destiny, the United States. China, on the other hand, said that it would either not go to war or go to WW3 if it wanted to. This prevents the United States from achieving its strategic goals. So you can see that politicians in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan are acting very aggressively and doing everything they can to annoy China. On the one hand, they can show off in front of their American dad; on the other hand, they know very well that China will not go to war with them.

Taiwan is a lot more prepared than Ukraine for war. Their doctrine is based on the all but guaranteed intervention of the US. Slow any invasion down to a couple of days so the Pacific Fleet can get involved. At that point, short of going nuclear, China will lose the invasion. Nukes have problems of their own though, likely destroying the delicate equipment in the fabs via electromagnetic forces. It would defeat the purpose of invading by destroying Taiwan's semiconductor industry.

Those are all more around Phoenix, I know there's a lot of tech companies in Tuscon, AZ too which is more southern. I think it Wendover was a video talking about how a lot of american car companies test vehicles for heat conditions on private roads in Tucson. Just in case you aren't from the SW USA, the biggest issue most people have is the Colorado River is at historic lows, we get most (if not all) of our water from this river and share its supply with Colorado, Nevada and some others. In Arizona we grow a lot of water intensive commodity crops (like cotton) and we are seeing huge tech fans like intels and things like Googles cloud server data base that will/does use water (I think it's called swamp cooling). Not an expert :) just a resident, and it's been reported on/discussed a lot more now that the river produces less water

@@Ryfael my guess is security and stability and local government incentives. Arizona does not have any natural disasters. No earthquakes, no hurricanes. Just very hot summers. It is inland but close enough to Mexico and California for trade and transport. Regarding water, the AZ governor claims they have the second best water management system in the world, second only to Israel. Israel has a big tech sector and a big Intel plant and that consumes a lot of water too. The AZ Intel fabs recycles 80% of their water usage and it is assumed TSMC will be doing the same.

(TLDR at the bottom) One massive item that was missed in this wonderful video (which, in fairness to the creator, only happened a day before releasing the video) is the modernization levels of global militaries allied to the US that would be called to arms in defense of Taiwan; not just at the highest level of military-technical abilities, but what the mean technical level throughout a military is. For example, Russian military forces can field a modern infantryman, equipped with a modern rifle, optic, night vision equipment, modern body armor, and modern communication equipment. However most of the troops seen in Ukraine are seen with only parts of this list, often missing modern communication equipment, night vision equipment, optics, and so on. Thus, while Russia's peak technical ability is on par with a modern military, its mean technical ability is below average. But China has been seen fielding an ever-increasingly modern military at a higher mean technical level than Russian forces (though still below US standards), so how does this affect them? Well, it doesn't; not directly at least. Where it does affect china is in the arsenals of national armories of nations that the US might call upon as allies should they invade Taiwan, much like was seen in operation desert storm. In recent years, criticism was leveled at many nato nations for having poorly equipped and steadily outdating militaries, however with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, many nations have been sending heavy equipment to the aid of Ukraine, with a large focus on their oldest units that are still in operation first. because of this, most European nations now have a gulf in their abilities as many of their own forces are now without equipment, mostly tanks, airplanes, artillery, and logistics. Modern equipment will need to be acquired by these nations, such as Poland, Germany, Romania, and the united kingdom, which will drastically improve their mean technical ability. Many US-allied nations have already started this process or accelerated an ongoing process, with Poland eying American f-16s or Germany green lighting f-35s. The US military aid package of 33 billion dollars (slightly more than Australia, the 10th largest defense spender 2020 yearly defense budget) has a focus on providing the money necessary for any military who was impacted by the invasion to purchase new and modern equipment to replace anything that was sent to Ukraine. what this means for china is that if the US forms an international coalition as they did with Kuwait, the militaries they can provide will be far better equipped than they were a few months ago. TLDR: the Russian invasion of Ukraine has sparked many US allies to modernize their militaries and the US is providing them the money needed to do so, if china invades twain and the US assembles an international coalition as they did in Kuwait, it will be far more potent than it would be currently.

So you need graphene structure... Which.. is large... The smallest "transistor" like structure is larger then what is achievable with silicon using XUV. And there is one extra issue with graphene... You can't work it well with XUV litography. Carbon bonds are broken easily by short wavelengths. Destroying the structure. And frankly unless you start building CPUs atom by atom there is not much tech avaible how to work carbon. In this particular regard silicon is much superior material. Just for ease of manufacturing. It was a decent place. The seafood was delicious, and the views were great. Until now, Matsu islands are totally under Taiwanese government control. People can vote for their own president and have freedom of speech there, just like in Taiwan (unlike the PRC). Btw, I live in Taipei now.

I love your videos and they're always well presented! However, there's a massive flaw in presenting capturing Taiwan and their semiconductor fabrication facilities (fabs) as cutting the West off from the semiconductor fabrication technology and not crippling China itself. Over 98.5% of the chip lithography machines which TSMC uses are designed and produced by companies friendly to the West: ASML (Dutch) - 28% market share Nikon (Japanese) - 11% market share Ushio (Japanese) - 11% market share SUSS MicroTech (German) - 6% market share EVG (Austrian) - 5% market share Only ASML produces Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography (EUV) machines to make 5 nm chipsets and eventually 3 & 2 nm chipsets. ASML produces 50 EUV machines/year and has sold about 125 of these machines. Assuming TSMC had all these machines, it would take ASML about 125 ÷ 50 = 2.25 years to resupply the West with TSMC current capabilities. This ignores that West friendly Samsung (South Korean) also produces 5 nm chipset with ASML machines. Adjusting to account that TSMC and Samsung have 52% and 18% market share resepectively, it would take ASML (52-18)/52 × 2.25 = 1.5 years to resupply the West with TSMC's current capabilities. On top of this, if China captured Taiwan today without somehow loosing TSMC's fabs and engineers, China would be cut off from all Western friendly fabs and new lithography machines from these Western friendly companies. Thus in this most optimistic scenario for China, China would be capped at TSMC's current production levels while the West surpasses them in 1.5 years. Most likely TSMC would cripple their fabs and evacuate their engineers. Instead, China would be capped at their tiny domestic capability, crippling them severely, while the West makes due with Samsung's capability.

Intel would also undoubtedly greatly accelerate their external fabbing plans if TSMC were to fall. TSMC without ASML is basically a sinking ship. Literally no one else has the ability to supply the EUV machines needed for current and coming cutting edge technologies. China has already spent billions trying and failing.
@Quickshot0
@Quickshot0 2 жыл бұрын
Pretty much as said, though of course China would not be able to get various parts to fix any EUV machines that developed a problem either, as complicated machines always do. So at the very best it would be a degrading capability, while the developed democracies would with an interruption of some years start getting back on pushing the technology forward. Of course now considering what the war in Ukraine has shown, China could probably count on being cut off as much from the worlds markets as the other developed nations could bear, which would probably expose them to many vulnerabilities in specialist parts no one else but one or two particular nations made, various raw goods, etc. Which would likely cripple their economy or its ability in future to develop. Over all as such an invasion of Taiwan might as such lead to the downfall of China's chances of developing further. Basically a terrible blunder, as the value of Taiwan in prestige and strategic positioning, will never make up for the costs that much of the developed world would inflict upon an expansionistic imperial power.

China would also be cut off from the most important chip designers as well. People seem to forget just how incredibly difficult it is to design or even copy successful chips. The chips made for x86 machines or even the ARM designs require significant amounts of R&D to squeeze out maximum performance. The video also ignores the extreme importance of analog chip manufacturing which is dominated by companies like Texas Instruments and Analog Devices.

Been so long since this video posted and so much to learn. Cliff notes today are basically if the Mainland declared war on Taiwan, they have like a 40% chance of being successful despite directing all of their military might at that and even if they did they would lose all of their customers, half of their fuel resources and most importantly their best and brightest in a country that already faces a drastic population fall problem to more free and democratic counties. They might take the island but the cozy creepy people in charge of China (one of the most beautiful and wonderful places on Earth btw) could not replicate within themselves what they have achieved and grown from an abundance of youth and an open welcomed attitude towards the rest of the world. Like uncle said, It doesn't matter whether a cat is black or white, as long as it catches mice. In this case the cat would not have any mice to catch.

As a resident of mainland China, I am very grateful for this KZbinr's sharing of knowledge. Many of the points made are very accurate and the videos are impartial and neutral, without bias towards either side. I would like to add some of my own thoughts and share them, and I hope we can have a mild and friendly discussion. If anyone comes here just to call me a "50 cent" or a "CCP dog," please leave the discussion. Thank you. 1, as a resident of mainland China, I find it very difficult to understand the demonization that the Communist Party has encountered in the world. According to the propaganda from the international community, a communist country must represent corruption, dictatorship, evil, poverty, and chaos. However, the economic development over the past forty years since the reform and opening up policy cannot be denied. China has developed from a country with a per capita income of $1,000 to one with a per capita income of $12,000. It is impossible to achieve this solely through corruption, oppression, and coercion. This is a fact that I hope everyone can acknowledge. 2,The kindness towards the people of Taiwan was deeply ingrained in my mind since childhood through the history education I received (which the "international mainstream media" calls brainwashing). From elementary school to high school, the textbooks repeatedly emphasized the friendliness and good behavior of the Taiwanese people. Therefore, when I grew up and saw the deep hostility of the Taiwanese people towards mainland China, I was very shocked. China has always adhered to the policy of peaceful reunification with Taiwan. However, Taiwan has become an important tool for the United States to restrict China globally. In the past decade, the United States has repeatedly played the Taiwan card to create bargaining chips for negotiations with mainland China. However, due to the chaotic partisan struggles within the United States, it has been unable to maintain a stable and continuous political policy and framework (unable to reach stable and executable agreements). This is the reason why mainland China has abandoned negotiations with the United States in recent years, intensified its military preparations, and is taking military action seriously. The fundamental reason for the recent escalation of the Taiwan issue is the United States' lack of self-awareness of its current situation. The United States still believes that it is the only superpower in the world and is ready to take all measures, including military ones, to limit anyone who it thinks is attempting to replace it. That includes China, which the United States thinks is trying to replace it. 3,The actions of the United States in attempting to stifle China appear very contradictory, which is quite interesting. 3.1, Genocide: On the one hand, the United States propagates the so-called "genocide" of the Uyghur population in Xinjiang by the CCP, yet it cannot explain how the Uyghur population has grown by nearly 50% in the past 20 years, far exceeding that of the Han population (China does not implement the one-child policy for ethnic minorities, who can have any number of children they want). The United States also cannot explain why a nation that is supposedly committing genocide against a certain ethnic group would provide significant economic and educational support to that same group. Uyghur students can even receive extra points on China's national college entrance exam and be admitted to universities with lower admission scores. 3.2, Double standards: On the one hand, the United States claims to support free trade in the world, yet on the other hand, it is actively stifling it with the chip bill, which is a clearly discriminatory and non-free law. How can a supposedly free country pass such a law? Does democracy only exist in the West? Does development only exist in the West? It is as if the United States, which loves to advocate for "freedom of navigation," has not even joined the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Or, as the White House spokesperson said the other day, countries that do not use the US dollar are a violation of human rights, which is an extremely ridiculous and double-standard statement. The behavior of the United States, which claims to be a superpower, is becoming increasingly insecure. Finally, I don't quite understand why the United States cannot maintain strategic stability and limited support for Taiwan until 2030, as the video suggests that China will reach its peak of development before gradually declining afterwards. Why not avoid crossing China's red lines and give the mainland no opportunity to slice Taiwan, while increasing military investment in military bases in the Philippines, Japan, and South Korea to maintain military deterrence against China, thus allowing China to recognize its own power gap and no longer pose a "military threat" to Taiwan? Or perhaps the United States understands that the overall trend of history is irreversible and that its decline is inevitable, so it can only try its best to extinguish the rising sun that is coming from the Eurasian continent while the last rays of imperial glory still shine on the world?

You forgot about ASML. Which makes the machines that actually make the chips. And ASML is Dutch. If you think TSMC dominates fabs with its near monopoly, ASML has a complete 100% monopoly on the machines necessary to make the newest chips, EUV lithography machines. And they provide a lot of support to keep them running. It's not at all certain that China would be able to operate those machines if they captured them without ASMLs support, which they would not have. ASMLs machines are probably the most complicated things on the planet after particle accelerators and fusion reactors.

Granted NL is allied to US and a founding member of NATO, but ASML, NL and EU also need to seek self-interest to some extent... If TSMC were at Beijing's hands, what if helping China, even a little bit through some shady deals, on advanced lithography systems, turns out to be more profitable and stops China's ASML equivalent from ever catching up (still seems unlikely however)? Key facts: 1. Taiwan's DPP government does not intend to 'declare independence'. That would mean declaring independence from themselves, the Republic of China which would make no meaningful difference to the lives of Taiwanese residents. 2. Taiwan's population overwhelmingly opposes becoming a subject of Beijing. That's what happens when Beijing's policy is intimidation, and breaking promises which leads into: 3. Taiwan's population chose the DPP government in a democratic election and by extension, closer ties to the west. Their interest is in maintaining the current status quo as an independent Republic of China without the Communist Party, and the west are the only ones who have an interest in helping them in that cause. Anyone who is against war should also support maintaining that status quo. For one to say they're against war and then side with Beijing which has vowed to change said status quo without renouncing the use of military force to do so is a direct contradiction.

Don't be too impressed. Actually, this video inflated and exaggerated Taiwan's and TSMC's importance in particular. TSMC uses ASML machines to make their most advanced chips. ASML machines are assembled in Europe, the Netherlands (Dutch). The technology and the most critical components of the ASML machines come from California, USA. Even if China were able to invade Taiwan and capture TSMC intact, before Taiwanese sabotage or destroyed by American cruise missiles in the middle of the night, it wouldn't be long (2 or 3 years) before those ASML machines would become obsolete. Capturing TSMC and the current ASML machines would not make China the most technologically advanced country in the world, at least, not for long. That's a bunch of BS. But most likely, TSMC factories would be destroyed, one way or another, before the Chinese communists ever produced a single chip from them.

@@Runner-do1sg That's not a fact. It's a lie. The fact is, Taiwan is an island off the coast of mainland China. The UN does not treat Taiwan as a Chinese province, because China has no control over Taiwan, and cannot speak for Taiwan. Taiwan does not take orders from China. So any country that wants to communicate with Taiwan has to do so directly with the Taiwanese government. The CCP has no authority in Taiwan. The 2 governments are completely separate from each other. Everyone knows that. Sanctions and trade deals with China do not apply to Taiwan. Trade deals with Taiwan are separate and different from what we have with China. The US sells weapons to Taiwan, but not to China. They are both treated as different countries. That's a fact. The Republic of China refers to China from 1912 - 1949, before it was stolen by the CCP. The Republic of China does not recognize the CCP or the People's Republic of China as the legitimate government of China. You could also say that Taiwan is China, but it is a part of China that is not under the rule of, or governed by the CCP or the People's Republic of China. Taiwan China is a different country governed by a democratic government, not communist, called the Republic of China. It is a separate country, not a province of mainland China, ruled by the communists. Taiwan China is not governed by the CCP or PRC. What do you mean the US is "holding Taiwan hostage against China"? I think TSMC is building a 3nm fab in Arizona, currently the most advanced chip. I'd be incredibly surprised if the US government hadn't put some thought into this, not to mention I seriously doubt the fabs in Taiwan would survive an attack by PRC even if TSMC didn't destroy them themselves. I'd very much guess that those American gunships patrolling the waters around Taiwan have long had solutions for the plant coordinates locked in just in case.
@palindrome.
@palindrome. 7 ай бұрын
Absolutely; even if China perfectly executed an invasion, the US itself would bomb every fab on the island until it was nothing but ash and powder. There is a 0% chance that China would meaningfully advance its semiconductor industry by invading. Even if China captured all of Taiwan's best scientists and started work on latest-generation facilities tomorrow, they would *at most* be on-par with other Western fabs by the time they finished, or (due to sanctions on components like mirrors & materials) more likely at least one generation behind.

To answer your question, this is based on international law after World War II. Please do not be brainwashed by media that serves a particular party based on ideology. On December 1st, 1943, the governments of China, the United States and the United Kingdom issued the Cairo Declaration, announcing that their purpose was to return to China all the territories that Japan had stolen from China, such as Manchuria, Taiwan and the Pescadores. On July 26th, 1945, China, the United States and the United Kingdom jointly signed the Potsdam Proclamation, which was later joined by the Soviet Union. The proclamation reaffirmed that "the terms of the Cairo Declaration shall be carried out" and stipulated that "Japanese sovereignty shall be limited to Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, Shikoku and such other minor islands as we determine."

The PRC has one crippling strategic weakness: 50-60% of it's total oil usage is imported via tanker ship through VERY easily interdicted chokepoints. that's probably why China dominates trade in South East Asia and the Middle East to make them dependant on China ,therefore making it impossible for them to side with the US incase their economy falls along with China's. Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states trades more with China than the USA (roughly 20% of all of Saudi Arabia's exports and imports go to China whereas less than 9% go to the USA) It's very childish to assume that everyone will support the US in the US-China war because of the massive influence China has and Saudi Arabia might just back China. Kids in Taiwan were taught “Taiwan” as an independent country, while kids in china were taught “Taiwan” as the largest island in China. What we were taught when we were small imprinted on our brain. Also, we got cultural identity to where we were born. The cultural identity to Taiwan or China causes the enmity between us. I love Taiwan, but for certain reasons I I don’t like both Taiwan and the Chinese government. To my point of view, the Taiwanese government keeps stimulate the Chinese government to start a war. What people want is “peace” between both countries. What does starting a war bring to us? Nothing but a bunch of dead bodies, and obviously, most of them are the citizens, not the politicians. That’s not fair! The politicians starts the war, but why should the citizens pay their lives? The people are like chess on the chessboard, and the government controlling our future. I mean their icon, Mao Zedong, is literally the biggest mass murderer in human history. Their economy progressed by stealing technology and manufacturing methods from other countries. And it's steamed ahead with exploiting it's impoverished citizens. China embraces intellectual property theft in order to get ahead and will invest significant money to steal technology from western countries, and Russian defense companies as well.

Man, your videos have really put into perspective how much of the world governments and human history have been all about a power struggle, resources, strategic conquering of land. It's scary to think in this day and age of nuclear energy, we as a human race can end ourselves instantaneously

Please note: 1. In the world , no country called "Taiwan" 2. Please read PRC and ROC constitutions, they call themselves "CHINA" 3. PRC and ROC are still in civil war from 1945 to 2022. 4. NOBODY can seperate Taiwan from CHINA, !!! 5. Most Chineseness like ROC because it is one part of CHINA HISTORY, but if ROC be indepent from CHINA , sorry, it means civil war again !!!

Not instantly as the cockroaches who push the buttons would probably be sat in bunkers for the rest of their natural lives.

The nuclear technology should be used to power ourself into a kardashev scale 1 civilisation and beyond, or we can use it and go -0.5 on the kardashev scale, which is not good

This issue is very complicated when viewed from different perspectives, it's legally still a civil war, I just wish for peaceful negotiation

The Taiwan issue represents a contest between China and the United States, with Taiwan being of significant strategic importance to China. As such, China is unlikely to allow Taiwan to be controlled by any other country. However, a large-scale war over this issue would be catastrophic, and it is crucial to avoid reaching the point where nuclear weapons are used. The potential consequences of such a conflict would be disastrous for the entire human race.

China would be crushed within hours…an amphibious assault on that scale scrambled by the US navy is sure to be doomed

You’re being dramatic. The ccp would never not use such deadly measure in Taiwan. China is more likely to go to war with the US tbh.

I don’t think Nukes would be used because of how they are trying to preserve Taiwan’s resources. I actually think it’ll be entirely conventional until a clear winner has been decided.

US wants to weaken other nation by divide...Korea, former German, Vietnam were all examples! Such hegemony is bound to fail with Chinese determination in unification and sovereign integrity! Taiwanese are not White people and US cannot expect to own them...no??????
