Is the 2019 Nissan Rogue Still Worth a Look With Upgraded CX-5, Forester, and RAV4?

For 2019 the Nissan Rogue is still one of the best selling vehicles in America although it's facing the stiffest competition in years. With an updated 2019 Mazda CX-5, redesigned 2019 Toyota Rav4, and always competitive 2019 Honda CR-V. The 2019 Rogue is a good value with how many features it offers, the amount of space available, and the overall comfort. I enjoyed my time in the Rogue and find it extremely practical, however the driving experience was disappointing. The power is lacking compared to competitors and the CVT transmission was unrefined, somewhat jerky at times, and had the ever so annoying rubberband effect. I'm not against CVTs but this one was not my favorite. If you can get past the driving dynamics, you'll love the practicality and space the Rogue offers. This model shown is the 2019 Rogue SL with some additional features for a luxurious option.

They will have possibly RAV4's NISSAN Rogue's and MAZDA CX-5 , and also maybe a Ford Escape (which I would think i would want to avoid like the plague, correct?) @@Ghost-jy9hk I had a 2014 Dodge Dart. I put 184 thousand miles on it in 5 years. I used it for Uber and Lyft, also was delivering pizzas in that thing. Thing pretty much was on its last leg, I drove it to a Hyundai dealership, bought a Elantra, left my dodge there and donated it to charity. Unfortunately my Elantra was recently totaled in a car accident. So now I’m car shopping, I saw a rouge at the Chicago auto show and liked it. Might look at a Versa too.

I bought a 2019 Rogue - with 23,000 miles. I would have preferred the CX-5, or the Rav 4, or the Honda CR-V. The Rogue was $4,000 less than those preferred comparables. Since I paid cash - the 2019 Rogue and $4,000 in my pocket was the better option for me. Someday when money doesn't make a difference - perhaps I'll splurge - but for now the Rogue won the day for me.

glad you like your rogue. i have driven (rented) a CX-5 which was fairly loaded (pretty loaded just stock) and really liked it (a ton) and loved the stereo / entertainment knobs on the console and the sheer power. But I'm guessing the Rogue is pretty peppy.

I honestly enjoy this car a lot. as someone with a growing family i prefer cars with just enough power and nothing too jumpy. used mostly as my daily commuter and a lot of stop and go traffic. would recommend for those with a limited pocket and need the size

I have the sharp 2019 Rogue SL/AWD in "Monarch Orange". Love the SUV and thanks to viewing KZbin, watched another guy with his Rogue. He got me started with some Upgrades 1. Shocks for the Hood 2. Rear Pilar Leds 3.Head Light + Fog Led's 4. Sequential Mirror Turn Signals 5. Strobe Brake Led's 6. Sequential Lt/Rt under Hood Led Turn Signals. 7.Hitch with Step 8. Some interior items. Really enjoyed the many 'accessory' add-on ideas with help from the Nissan X-Trail Items. Some items not offered if you search under Rogue. Thanks to EBay & Amazon for all my fun improvements. Long time Toyota and Honda guy. Wanted to buy a new SUV. Test drove RAV-4, CR-V, HR-V and Rouge. Rogue SV was the smoothest comfortable car packed with tons of standard features. RAV4 was bad in every department. CR-V was the best ride but lacked features. HR-V was a real disaster. HR-V was severely underpowered. Shame on Honda for making HR-V this bad. Finally bought Rogue. For $4K less you get tons of standard features and a very quiet and smooth ride.

That Nissan 2.5L engine may not set the barn on fire, but it is bullet-proof and proven. Or, you could get into a fuel-dilution issue with the turbo-charged and direct-injected CR-V which is hurting Honda's reputation.

Great review Nolan, really enjoyed it. It is a sharp looking vehicle. Interior has some nice options. Rear seating area seems kinda weird with the theatre style seats and low headroom. Powertrain is gutless with that small naturally aspirated engine and cvt. No matter how the vehicle looks or how it’s appointed, it has to have good power imo.

Back in June of 2018 I drove the CRV, RAV4, and the Forester, they all drove very similar. The CRV had 184 hp, the RAV4 176 hp and both the Forster and Rogue 170 hp. Now I came from a sedan with 290 hp so they all were slow when trying to merge especially on Eastern Pennsylvania major highways. I thought the Rogue offered more for the money and it’s front seating and dash layout were much better. At that time neither a Honda or Toyota wanted to offer any incentives so I bought the Rogue, I been happy, but they all have lackluster transmissions. If speed is your need buy a 6 cylinder model.

Hey Nolan, in South Africa it's called an X-Trail and is pretty highly specced. Compares pretty well with the CX-5 but I didn't like the center console that swoops down so low by the cup holders. Still a nice SUV though.

Interesting review for a vehicle that sells well for Nissan but doesn't generate many reviews. I'd disagree somewhat that the Rogue's main competition is the offerings in the mainstream compact crossover class (CR-V, Rav4, CX-5, Forester, etc.). Those vehicles are all about 180" in length while the Rogue (along with the VW Tiguan) is at the shorter end of a growing category of "tweener" or "Goldilocks" size crossovers that range from 185" to about 190", give or take an inch, and slot between "compact" and what North Americans call "midsize" SUV's. The rest of the world considers that latter class as behemoths. In addition to the Rogue and Tiguan (each 185") the "tweener" category includes the Hyundai Santa Fe (188"), the Kia Sorento (189"), the Subaru Outback (189"), the Ford Edge (188"), , and the Honda Passport (190"). If the category is extended a bit it might include the new Chevy blazer (191"), the Jeep Grand Cherokee (191") and the Nissan Murano (192"). There are also several premium, luxury SUV's in this size range but they are really another category, altogether. Further, the Goldilocks class most definitely does not include the gigantic CX-9 (199") mentioned in the review. It's definitely a behemoth, at least in terms of length if not in terms of interior space. Most of these vehicles offer total cargo space of 70-75 cubic feet, significantly more than those in the compact class. (The CRV and the Forester are exceptions in the compact category and the Passport offers slightly more cargo space.) And all but the one are two row five passenger vehicles. The Sorento is a standard 3 row CUV. (Technically the VW Tiguan offers an optional third row but it's suitable only for very small children or a bound and gagged hostage.) Engine choices vary between vehicles that offer only 4 cylinder motors, some turbos (e.g. Santa Fe, Edge) to those that offer V6 mills (Most NA other than the Edge turbo) as standard (Passport) or optional (everyone else). Almost all vehicles offer eight (or more) geared transmissions. The only exceptions are the Rogue and the Outback with CVT's, I believe. All offer AWD options but I believe that's optional on all vehicles. MSRP's for mid to top trims range from the lower $30K (USD) to the mid to high $40K's (USD). Real world prices may be somewhat less, especially in upper trims. Among the various choices in this tweener class, I'd personally put the Rogue mid-pack or below. The size and cargo/passenger room are pretty good, especially considering it's at the lower end of the vehicle size range. Lots of driver comfort and convenience features but they're coupled with an unimpressive naturally aspirated 4 cylinder mill and a rather mediocre CVT. As a KIA Sorento owner I obviously find this entire Goldilocks category appealing but I think there are better choices than the Rogue.

As always, very well said. I find the sizing for the Rogue interesting because they have the Murano as their larger 2 row offering...although it’s marketed differently than the Rogue. I mistakenly said CX-9 lol...like you said that things a monster in size. Even though it’s size compares to the tweener vehicles listed...I think it’s quite inferior to those and still competes the most with smaller compact offerings. The uninspiring Powertrain is lacking behind even the smaller compact vehicles and its fit/finish, high end features still don’t match the compact offerings like ventilated seats, Head up display. @@PrimeAutotainment Thanks, Nolan. Of course there's no universally accepted categorization of mainstream crossovers. Mine is based primarily on the length of the vehicle and the cargo/passenger space. Those were factors in my wife's and my decision when we purchased a so-called "midsize" crossover last year. But that class stretches from the 189" Sorento to the truly humungous Traverse (204"). They're radically different vehicles and I find it difficult to imagine that anyone would cross shop them. The "midsize" category, I think is unnecessarily misleading. It's true that Nissan is pitching the Rogue (and VW's Tiguan) as competitors to compact crossovers. Hyundai is implying something similar with the 188" Santa Fe where it's really a stretch. (No pun intended.) But that strikes me as marketing speak rather than a fact-based comparison. Even the Rogue and Tiguan are closer in size to the so-called "midsize" Sorento than to the bulk of "compact" crossovers. As far as the CX-9 is concerned, it's clearly not in the same class as the Rogue but if you ignore the extra foot of length allocated to the distance from the windshield to the front bumper its interior space is actually that of a "tweener." I'll omit my usual snide remarks about the incredibly inefficient space allocation in the CX-9. The category I discussed isn't perfect, either. Specifically, it's difficult to figure out where to put the Nissan Murano and the Jeep Grand Cherokee. They're a bit longer than the largest of the "tweeners" but they each have a bit less cargo/passenger space than average in that category. And they're significantly shorter than most other "midsize" crossovers that range from about 196" to "204" and have three rows of seats. To me, they're both more like raised wagons than crossovers and that puts them in a category of their own. But then what about the Outback? Isn't it raised wagon, too? Argghhh... And none of this applies very well when "luxury" or "premium" brands are considered. When those vehicles are considered, true "utility" takes a definite backseat to brand, looks, and interior feel. They can't be compared to mainstream vehicles even if their size and interior space is comparable and their base trim prices overlap with top trims of mainstream vehicles.

It's also interesting that their Rogue Sport/Qashqai is only 3 inches longer than the new Nissan Kicks. It's true, the Rogue is bigger than the Tucson, CX5 and Sportage by quite a bit, closer to Santa Fe and Sorento in size.

A very impressive and good looking vehicle. In the UK we call it the X-Trail. Most sold here have diesel engines, although a 1.6 DIG-T petrol is available.. Great review as usual Nolan :-)

You bet! We wanted something we could rely on, easy to maintain, and that’s about it lol. Had a 2009 Chevy Malibu before and had never ending issues with it all before 70k miles so I researched and decided to go with Japanese made. Got a base model ‘13 Civic after that...but it was loud inside (I drive in rough country roads to work) and uncomfortable for me so I switched to a Camry. They’ve both been great for us...170k on Highlander and don’t wanna get rid of it!

I"m not sure if you've had a chance to see the LED headlights on the previous gen's Rav4, Nolan but as an owner, I think the LEDs on it are much better than the Rogue's. Overall, I've always thought the redesign of this SUV was a great way to make it stand out. It was even on the list of contenders when I was in the market for one. However, I think with the amount of stiff competition out there, the aesthetics of this Truck fades quickly when you break down the driving dynamics. I think it's most saving grace for a lot of people is the surround view cam and AppleCar play.

It needs more room in the rear. That funky "cargo management" system eats up room. In the mountains of WV, you need to run it in sport mode. Works OK, but cuts down gas mileage.

I really like the direction Nissan went with the design of this SUV, but in terms of power, it's unacceptable; IMO. I been in an under powered vehicle before and it can be a frightening experience, especially in high traffic areas. A few years ago, I wouldn't have given it much thought, but these days people are about getting to there destination as quick as possible and having a "slowpoke" in front of them has the potential to be quite infuriating and highly dangerous!

We sell a lot of these at the dealership, because they’re cheaper but roomier then a CRV, RAV4, CX5, or Forester. I like the look and the color and the interior color is pretty attractive as well, but the overall vehicle is just not up to the competition, hence the big rebates. The biggest downfall as you stated is the engine and transmission. It’s loud, underpowered, and nowhere near as reliable. Nissan’s CVT transmission kills it. It is downright the worst CVT I driven. Nissans also don’t hold their value as well as the Toyota, Subaru, Honda, or Mazda so that’s another hit you’ll take in the long run.

Thank you! The RAV4 has a more modern interior and a bit more practical front seat area. The RAV4 also drives better and has a little bit more get up and go. Back seat room and cargo space is very similar though. 4 Adults should be comfortable (as long as that includes you lol). I wouldn't want 3 adults in the backseat for sure. . Anyone over 6 foot might not have all that much legroom in the back but I'm 5'9'' and sitting behind where I would normally sit up front, I have plenty of space in all of those options. The Cx-5 has the smallest cargo are and feels a little more cramped up front, but overall space is still very similar. The CX-5 drives the best in terms of handling and it's the quietest of the bunch. It also has a minimalistic type of interior which looks and feels nice..but isn't necessarily the most practical. It also uses a rotary dial control knob for the radio/infotainment which can take a bit to get used to (so it might not be ideal for a short term rental) The Ford Escape was redesigned for 2020, and has great backseat legroom..some modern touches inside, but no wow factor by any means. Since i've driven all of them and I've gotten used to how they all handle and operate, I would go with the RAV4. I think it's the most well rounded. For a week rental, they should all be fine for hauling around 4 adults though. Good luck!

I'm disappointed that Nissan did away with the 3rd row option. I was considering a Rogue and liked the 'in a pinch' 3rd row for hauling the kids and their friends. I don't want a Pathfinder or similar sized vehicle.

Pasta 1298, you can always buy a 2017 SV version. They have 3rd row option. 2017 models are the last year Rogue offered a 3rd row. I just purchased a used 2017 SL platinum pkg. Basically the Same exact vechicle in this review except it is red and minus the apple car play. I am on my second Rogue and have had no issues with either one. My wife has a rav 4 and her brother a CRV and both of them like my Rogue better. Its just a more comfortable ride overall. When you are looking for a family SUV speed and power should be last. If you want speed and or power look at a sports car or truck. Family crossovers are safe reliable family vehicle's, not 0-60 in 3.2 sec speed demons lol.. I have driven my Rogue on the highway many times and have no problems passing and getting on the highway. Great value at a great price.

The rear part of the seat bottom goes up and down, but the front doesn’t tilt. 2 way lumbar, 2 way recline, 2 way forward/back, then 2 way up and down

Yeah that’s true. Nissans CVT especially has a bad reputation because of the company they get it from. It would make me nervous depending how long you’re gonna keep it

I was wondering why it was priced low for low kms the saleslady says she has a rogue with cvt and never had any issues 🤔 but I heard more bad then good and I want a reliable car I can keep for a long time but it has to be a good price point. You’re welcome! They definitely don’t hold their value as well as some. The thing about the CVT or reliability with any vehicle is there will always be good and bad luck with some, but it seems like I hear too many bad things about those which stinks. Keep me updated on your search 😎

It sucks that for LED headlights you need to get the top trim and still add a package. The rav4 now has them standard. Also I dont like that too trims comes with such big wheels, I'm more of a small wheel more tire.

I’ve heard a lot of bad things about the CVT reliability. Had a coworker with a 2013 that had the CVT and it was having transmission issues..

@@PrimeAutotainment So that one thing on a 2013 is what leads you to pan it? You do know that there are a ton of many years old Nissans with CVT that haven't had any problems, right? These negative reviews and comments about the Nissans are wild, you'd think the streets were't littered with abandoned Rogues that can't move a mile over 60k the way these reviews simultaneously like and pan this car. It's such a disconnect with reality.

You can go through forums and read countless issues from owners and even other Nissan videos where I don’t complain at all about the CVT people have commented reporting their own issues. It’s not necessarily Nissan...it’s JATCO..the company they buy their CVT from just like FCA and Mitsubishi and probably others. Many of the vehicles will go trouble free but a larger percentage will have problems compressed to manufacturers that don’t have that JATCO transmission.

Problems with any vehicle are easy to find online but you don’t often get people going online to praise a vehicle. Yes there are problems with the Jatco cvt but there are still vehicles using the cvt that don’t have any problems. Btw in the UK we have this as the X-Trail and it uses a DCT transmission. I also believe with the CVT it’s best to replace the transmission oil every 30,000 miles ish.

There's a reason why you can find so many 10 year old Rogue's with very low mileage for sale and very few for sale from any year with over 120,000 miles (or 200,000km). I'm guessing that the 2 people that think, just because something happens over and over again and no changes were made doesn't mean it's likely to continue to happen, probably bought a Rogue and maybe even did so after being advised not to.

The Toyota RAV4 beats this car in many ways! Reliability, Quality, just a lot of things that the RAV4 is better at! I have a 2019 Toyota RAV4 Limited! Love it!

The Toyota RAV4 is a far better vehicle. Nissan is cheap and unreliable junk. The Japanese poor mans car. I’ve driven through rich neighborhoods where I live and mostly see Toyota’s/Lexus in the driveways. Not one single Nissan.
