The Nissan Leaf was the first mass market EV, quickly becoming the best selling electric car of all time until 2019 when it was surpassed by the Tesla Model 3. With over a half a million Leafs built, clearly Nissan knows a thing or two about electric cars. But a lot has changed in the decade since Nissan introduced that first generation Leaf, and this second gen has been around for a few years itself. With all the new EVs being introduced by other manufacturers, is the Leaf still a good choice? Today let’s find out!

Made the step from a PHEV to a full EV almost a year ago. Kia E-Niro. If you want an EV that feels like a "normal car", that's definitely the one... or any of its cousins that share the same drivetrain.

I totally agree with everything said in this video. The Leaf is one of the best value for money deals. It's not the prettiest, nor the fastest, doesn't have the longest range, the interior is pretty regular but it kinda hits the sweet spot of averageness where it has the most bang for the buck spent if you're ok with being relatively unpretentious.

take away the tax credit, does it still apply? the bolt is giving almost 10k off because it cannot compete with the base model 3 which is near its price.
@Limemill
@Limemill 2 жыл бұрын
@@danielroden9424 In Canada, it does apply in full. In QC, by combining the Federal and provincial rebates you get about CAD 13K off (it's not a tax credit here, it's actual money given towards the car, but obviously it's the same thing essentially; money is money). Plus recently Nissan Canada had a 0% lease promo (basically, buying a car without a downpayment in instalments spread out over 4 / 5 years without interest and with an option to sell the car back after 4 years). I ended up paying monthly about $80 less for a 2020 SL Plus with a 360-km range and a bunch of frills than for my previous 2018 SV (240 km, no frills).

@@danielroden9424 Well, I'm comparing based on what's there today. And today, at least in Canada, the 220-mile Leaf is a lot cheaper than the Model 3. My Wife & I got the 2021 Leaf SV Plus. We absolutely love the Leaf. We live near a solar plant so all of our charging is done during the day to ensure clean charges every time. Garage kept & we never want to go back to ICE vehicles. I am actually looking at conversion kits for my 86 Sierra Long bed truck to make it electric as well. Man, EVs are so much fun & cleaner. The only thing is that the LEAF drains water from the Windshield directly into the front struts. I ordered some strut caps from amazon so that will solve my problems. I love the Intelligent Cruise Control & Traction control plus instant torque for passing is SO ENJOYABLE. I drive in ECO mode, with E-padal on & B-Mode is very handy as well. It seems like kind of a weird time right now to buy an EV. Would love your take on older (used) EVs or PHEVs. We got a 2014 Ford C-Max Energi for like $9k and are really happy with it. The EV range sucks in the cold weather (and the trunk is laughably silly), but it drives great and the 18-20 miles is plenty of range most of the time. There's lots of good deals to be had on 1st gen Nissan Leafs (and Chevy Bolts). They have low miles and require little maintenance so they've held up really well-- battery degradation hasn't been much of an issue. Even an early 2010s EV/PHEV winds up being a great deal for a used car. In even 1-2 years from now with more competition, better govt incentives, and advances in technology, newer EVs will be way cheaper-- maybe even cheaper than gas counterparts. I vote grab yourself either a cheapo used EV or a new PHEV like a Rav4 Prime or even go weird like a Pacifica PHEV.

In the US market the Tesla is probably a better choice (if you're willing to pay for it), but in Tokyo where I live, the subcompact dimensions of the Leaf that doesn't give up storage is perfect to navigate the narrow streets with. Also, most people don't commute by car (no parking space at work), so it gets sort of hard to justify a Tesla for non-hardcore fans. Cars are mostly used for pickups and dropoffs because parking is so dang expensive. Thanks for the review!

Hah, Chademo is a blessing, watching all those CSS cars searching for a charger that's not occupied. Chademo will stick around for a long time still. Most chargers have a dual system with both possibilities. The worst charging problem is cars that have to park in an awkward way for the charging cable to reach the charging port, blocking for the second car using the same charger. AS long there is money in it, Chademo chargers will be available.
@LordElpme
@LordElpme 2 жыл бұрын
however, as chargers get replaced due to wear, tear and impact damage Chademo will start to get scarce and with a token inclusion if at all. Buying a new Chademo based car in 2021 is risky, especially if you are planning to use it in a way that you are at the mercy of 3rd party charging. The Leaf is a good EV, i really like my 2014 model but there are better options now in the same price bracket that isn't at the mercy of legacy fast charger support

I just watch this, obviously a couple years late. LOL. I bought a used 2019 LEAF SL Plus about a year ago. The car only had 6,798 miles on it so basically a "New car" to me. The protective shipping film still on the alloy wheels. I got the dealer to include a 54 month bumper to bumper Nissan warranty since it was a "Certified Used Car" and paid just under $28,000 for the car. Love it! It has exceeded all my expectations as a local runabout replacement for a 2008 Nissan Versa I had been driving. My wife loves it too so it is basically our first choice for daily local driving. The only disappointment has been the recent word about CHAdeMO expecting to fade away in North America and the fact that the LEAF doesn't have an active cooling system for the battery. I would love to make it my long trip vehicle too but with those two issues I guess it will have to remain my local daily driver for the foreseeable future.😀 not really a big deal since we also have a 2020 Corolla and a 2019 Chevy Silverado that we can drive when taking the LEAF isn't as convenient.

With a Leaf or a Bolt, I can do something as simple as turn on my windshield wipers, without having to deal with a touchscreen. Also, I can go to my local Nissan or Chevy dealer to buy one. Hi Ethan, Along with your channel I also like savage geese. For his brutal honesty on cars. Which is rare. He had a 97 civic. The same as I got for my new job I started. He was in a side accident and because of this spent time in the hospital. And bought a Volvo. After watching that video a few weeks ago, I also bought a volvo wagon. Why? Because I saw that 2 months ago, Takata airbags had a third recall for scrapnel shooting out on airbag deployment. Now if a company had 2 recalls I could believe there was a real fix. But after 3, everyone knows these airbags are highly likely just not trustworthy. Which leaves 2 manufacturers not using them- Volvo, and Hyundai/Kia. Being that car safety is so important. How would someone trust any brand even with a third recall. What would you do? I agree the Leaf is great. But what about its airbags? How can we trust any of these brands cars now? Seriously? What can one do?

You forget to mention the Elephant in the room (Rapid Gate) AKA No Battery Thermal Management.That's why we bought a 2019 Tesla Model 3 SR+ instead of a Leaf+ We own a 2015 Leaf so we thought a plus model would fit nicely,BUT Nissan didn't solve the problem so the most you can drive in a day is 300-400 miles before the battery gets to hot.

@ 18:19 about easier to find stations than EV charging - You are using the "SXM Fuel Prices" menu. It is not Nissan. SXM will provide a generic option in their broadcast, not specific to a vehicle (Perhaps there could be an EV charging point in SXM's filter menu). The "i" button in the bottom menu bar (on the right side of the CarPlay button) which shows EV charging info, is most likely Nissan provided menu.

Hey Ethan, the leaf is a great car, but Nissan recently quoted a guy $32,000 dollars for a new battery , not kidding. It was in Australia. They can't be serious. They put tiny batteries and slow chargers in their cars, and they have no battery temperature management. I had one for a year and I loved the car. It was great quality, HOWEVER I could only drive it about 30 miles in any direction before turning around to get home without charging. EVEN though I got used to that, the battery HEALTH kept on reducing over time, which is like having a petrol tank that keeps getting smaller. I traded it in on a Toyota Corolla HYBRID. Ok it's only half electric, but I can go 600 miles for about $30 USD.

The problem with the Leaf is the aprox 3% per year battery degradation. This is due to its lack of thermal management for it battery pack. Is the rapidgate still a thing with Leafs, though?
@ritz5606
@ritz5606 3 жыл бұрын
It's a thing with most EV's, hence the decision to use active or passive cooling. The 62 kWh version has for the most eliminated the problem by its battery chemistry, but you will experience it if the temperature is very high and you drive non-stop without pauses. The charging speed will fall to keep the battery safe. The 40 kWh version can have a drop in charging speed earlier than the 62 kWh version. In practice, it's not a problem at all. However, if you drive long hauls and need to charge without taking pauses, I wouldn't buy a Leaf. Passive cooling: What was it Elon Musk said? "The best part, is no part, and the best process is no process, It weighs nothing, costs nothing, can't go wrong".

@@ritz5606 From what I heard, Nissan actually fixed rapidgate with a software update basically removing the enforced limitation at 77 degrees and moving it higher as apparently they thought it was still safe. I'm mostly interested at what point in time the most recent models start throttling their energy intake, after a 2nd or 3rd back-to-back rapid charging?
@ritz5606
@ritz5606 3 жыл бұрын
@@Limemill I don't think there are an exact answer to that due to the dependence on the temperature outside, speed and so on. Looks like most car reviewers are from either California or around areas with auto manufacturing history like Detroit. They view the world only from their perspective: in this video live emission free life. However there are spots in the USA where electricity is genuinely cheap enough where commuting an EV make clearly financial sense: for instance in the Pacific North West USA hydropower allows to cover 1 mile of home charged commute from 2.25 USA cents per mile. Considering weather sparing those air cooled batteries and inherently reliable Nissan as a car the cost for maintenance and repairs is almost negligible. The catch: commute should be in the range of the car and obviously the ability to charge at home overnight. Even better a place to park at home and budget for dedicated road tripper which is not this LEAF makes this LEAF a perfect hustle free option for commuting especially if to buy this car pre owned with decent price but enough life left in it.

It's kind of that, since most charging stations in the US aren't attached to gas stations. It's really bizarre that Nissan chooses to put that at the forefront instead of the background, though.

It uses the same infotainment system found in other Nissans, and they apparently didn't bother to optimize for the Leaf. You can customize the screen to show charging stations which is great-it just seems like Nissan should've made that the default behavior for this car.

Just a little detail you did not mention, the battery management, the NISSAN LEAF is the worst of the worst. I don’t recommend this car, The degradation of the battery is really bad, as example I follow a guy with a Chevy bolt with his car over 1500000 miles with almost 0 battery degradation but the Nissan Leaf after 50000 miles you start to see significan degradation loosing bars.

Personally I would not advocate the use of "KW/100 miles", because the "lower is better" system of thinking is not how the US populace has been trained to think. We're used to "higher is better", which would be the much simpler "Miles/KWHR". No need to confuse people more than they already are. Also... yikes. That SL Plus is not a bargain at all compared to the Kia E-Niro EX Premium, which is about 2 months away from becoming the obsolete, entry-level model with the arrival of the EV6 and Ioniq 5. I can see the basic 40kw Leafs being a decent deal, assuming the prospective owners get all available incentives and use it for short-average commuting only... And that's being generous enough to ignore the fact that even in 2021, the Leaf still doesn't have liquid-cooled batteries that are really critical in hot climates...
