GX460 is the best automobile I have ever owned. I've owned LS400, LS430 and LS460 which I love but I have settled with this GX tank. The only takeaway is that it's thirsty... very thirsty.

The GX is a somewhat overlooked amazing 4x4 platform, I have an 04 GX470 and it has basically the exact same drivetrain. I bought it in March for $5k, did the timing belt service added a 2.5" lift (air suspension delete) and put used all terrains on it from craigslist. My wife and I did an 4000 mile overland trip out west this summer and it performed flawlessly. Did parts of the Alpine loop etc. it never missed a beat, barely spun a tire, even in rain and hail storms while on the trail. I easily kept up with rigs 10x the price. Oh and this truck currently has 262,000 miles on it. If I had the money, I would just buy another GX, they are so good, and so comfortable...

I've got a completely stock GX470 and I am really impressed with what it can do with zero mods aside from AT3W tires. My 2011 is stock except for 285/70 KO2's and i did endup folding a running board on my last forest service road. It was partially my fault, but driving it in stock form does require that you pick a decent line to keep it from hitting. My skids have taken a bunch of hits and I whacked my spare tire/hitch pretty good one time. The ground clearance even with the 285/70's is quite a bit less than my stock suspension F150.

I hope folks do their research on the air suspension for the Lexus GX470/460. It is only on the rear suspension and only raise/lower the rear not the the entire vehicle. It is more suited for load leveling when towing. There are other vehicles that have full air/hydraulic suspensions that raise/lower the entire vehicle as well as provide load leveling. Examples include the new Land Rover Defender, Range Rover, LR3/LR4, Lexus LX470/570, etc...

The bargain on these is when they're about 3 years old (i.e. just coming off lease for the wife) and have 20-30K miles. You can get them for ~$20-25K off new if you search far and wide enough. CarGurus has ~104 of them under $40K / 40K miles. @3:25 Yes it is true that GX has almost same ground clearance as a Highlander (8.1in) but with its KDSS system is has limitations on lifting. Accutune has a nice Tech article only to lift 1in rear for KDSS else you get in to problems like panhard bar hitting KDSS ram. When KDSS leaks its a dealer only fix which is concerning too. Also KDSS seem to have less articulation in rear. At the time I look at GX for my wife it doesn't have standard fuel tank skid either. Having small fuel tank for the v8 was a concern too. End up with a 4Runner Limited with 3rd row for my wife. With trouble free lift (right now having Ironman FCP) and 285/70R17 tires on stock 4Runner wheels look OEM look yet fun to play. If I were to get sliders no need to cut anything, bolts right up.

Ive watched this video a couple of times and it really is very good at describing the capabilities of this truck AND this model, the Black Line Edition. I'm fairly outdoorsy but I don't think I will ever take it out in those situations, 1 because I'm nowhere near terrain like that and 2 not really my thing. However, I do head out to snow country in the winter and for that reason I have a set of dedicated snow tires. As far as value I got mine in Sept of 2021 and it's the 22 Blackline Edition, green. Right now there are a few that you can find, that is 2022's and most of them with miles on them (15,000 to 30,000) are going for 5,000 or MORE ABOVE MSRP! So much for used car prices going down. Having paid MSRP for mine brand new I guess I should consider myself lucky! As far as all the extra goodies honestly I would have paid for them if they had offered those packages in the Nori Green color, but that color is exclusive to the Black line edition. I also would havee prefered the captains seats in the second row, since I still consider this truck to be a 4 passenger vehicle. The 3rd row is useless or extremely limited and you would't want to use it for more than a short drive to take a couple of kids to the movies, but I would NOT put anyone back there for a long drive. For me it's the perfect size truck. If you have more than 2 kids I think you will find yourself wanting more usable space when traveling, but you could resolve some of that by using a cartop carrier. I added a rear compartment shelf made by Victory 4 X $ and absolutely love it to stash a few goodies tools etc I like to have on hand.

GX is the platform I'm looking to move to. I love my modified XJ for the trails in Colorado and camping but now that I have a kid, it's time for something a little more comfortable, safe and roomy. I would say reliable as well but the i6 in the Jeep has been bulletproof for me.

XJ's are really great, I had one. The GX is so much more comfortable and nice to drive. The Jeep 4.0 is really good, but the 4.7 toyota is so good (minus mpg). The room in the GX is better and overall platform is better. Basically a 2-2.5" lift with good tires and the GX is a beast off road, and great on the road

You won't regret it. I got an '08 470 in 2017 in anticipation of my first kid. Now I have a '19 460 with two kids. Both GXs have been outstanding. Both are capable stock, but removing the running boards and trimming the bumpers makes a world of difference. I drove a '99 XJ in college and had a TJ for about 6 years after. Those were mountain goats completely stock.

@@arailtb Yeah I'd likely be ripping the runner boards off and going up to a 32.5 tire which I believe is the largest you can go before needing to lift. Maybe a little armor on the underside and new front bumper for winch and better clearance and that's about all i will do. I'll be keeping my 99' manual XJ as a toy so no need to go crazy with the GX build.

From Australia here. I've been lucky enough to have owned a GXL 150 (standard pack, only DAC) and currently own a Kakadu 150 (crawl control, kdss, air bags, mts, etc.). I'm definitely not calling the traction control offerings in the Kakadu a gimmick (far from it, that's why I wanted one). The traction control in the Toyota (I think the US commonly calls it ATRAC) which all models have, is absolutely brilliant, and will take you 98% of the places crawl control/mts will take you.

You're absolutely correct. The MTS system is a marketing gimmick with very little, if any gain, over the 4LO ATRAC capability of this vehicle. There are places a well equipped Wrangler will get that a GX/LC/4R can't get to, but you're usually getting into more niche rock climbing hobbyist stuff at that point. @numbersaviation
@numbersaviation Жыл бұрын
The GX should perform pretty well when you have the right tires; when you say logging roads I'm assuming muddy roads; just slap some mud tires on it and you'll be a-okay. Even if you get the "affordable" 55k MSRP GX (base trim), the brake vectoring system can figure it out. We had a situation (in our base trim GX) where we encountered some mud and slid off into a ditch and killed some bushes, we floored the throttle in 4Low with the center diff locked, the A-trac tried to work but after 3 seconds or so, it automatically disabled TCS or ESP or whatever it is because it knew we were in muddy/slippery conditions. And that pulled us out of that ditch and so we continued on.

Nice vehicle, just wish the front end was better looking and did not require cutting for a high clearance bumper. I have a 2017 4runner TRD OR and until recently a 2008 GX470. I prefered to drive the GX way more than the 4runner just for the engine alone. Once I cut the running boards, removed the rear air suspension, installed a 3" lift and put on a lil B fab bumper it became a beast. Losts of fun. Too bad a lady fell asleep in her car and plowed into the GX when my son was driving it to work. Waiting hear back from insurance as to whether or not it will be totalled. I paid $11K for it with 130k (super clean) miles 2 years ago, it only had 156K miles when it was hit. I don't think I will be able to replace it now for under $15K since the secret is out regarding GXs.

The V8 really makes such a difference. My clapped out 04 makes short work of so many obstacles because of the linear off idle torque in a smaller chassis (compared to the Tundra/Sequoia). I have done more extreme off-roading in other vehicles, but what I have done in the GX is impressive. It never broke a sweat, barely spun a tire even when lifted off the ground... best 5k I ever spent on a vehicle.... The thing is so comfortable too.
