One zoologist, Anthony Thulborn, actually belived that Tyrannosaurus and all other extinct non-avian theropods was really birds, since he did not classify birds as theropods which researchers do today, but instead the opposited (see Thulborn 1975). However, the idea died out soon after when John Ostrom came out and said that he could just not accept that large predatory dinosaurs as Tyrannosaurus and Allosaurus could be birds, thought without answer (see Ostrom 1976).

This figure is without question gorgeous, both in sculpt and color scheme, but I wouldn't have minded waiting even another year for better articulation. For a $200+ figure, the limited articulation and poseability is incredibly disappointing, especially in comparison to other large figures in the BOTM collection. As well, I found the paint really delicate, to the point that trying to get the tail on as carefully as possible still caused scuffing. Excellent review, however! I really appreciated the demonstration of what articulation *is* possible, as it can be nerve-wracking figuring out just how much you can bend the figure.

I fully agree with you. This thing is basically just a big statue. And I know some people are into that. But for me, the ceratopsian series has made me fall in love with posable action figures and I can't ever go back. The ability to put your figure in a bunch of cool poses is just, the best. And this T. rex does not meet my requirement for what I want. If it just had a posing rod, this would be a different conversation. I bought a posing rod for my 1/35 rex and I love it so much more with one. Getting to actually use the non standing legs allows for so many more display options. But, the 1/35 rex is also a much cheaper figure. Like, $155 dollars cheaper. So even without a posing rod it is more worth the price. But imma be real, if I didn't purchase a posing rod, I would sell it. I have no need for a $70 dollar statue in my collection. But, the 1/18 rex is so huge good luck even finding a posing rod for it! You're probably gonna have to find some kind of substitute for a posing rod, like a wood or metal rod, if you want something to support this thing. And who knows how well that would even work sense it can't grasp the figure in any way. Anyways, that was a really long rant to say that I don't think this thing is worth the price and I am happy I didn't get it. The sculpt and paint are amazing on this thing, but they also are on the 1/35 rex, which is cheaper and a much more practical size for putting in cool poses (with a posing rod of course). Yes, this thing is huge and that is really cool, but as someone who owns the 1/18 adult trike, I know that gimmick does get old as you get used to it. The size of a figure alone should not be your justification for getting it. So in short, I think the 1/35 rex is a better figure then the 1/18 rex. Thank you for reading my Ted Talk.

Just look up, "clear action figure posing rod" on amazon and you will get a variety of options. Most come in multi packs, and you have to assemble them. But honestly the assembly part is nice because that way you can make them way shorter then advertised.

In my opinion if you really want a predator for hell creek guardians(Triceratops and Torosaurus) get the Rex but if not I would say wait for the fans choice want they’re ultimately announced

@@l6k007 I think so. From what I can tell the two of them have about the same amount of detail. Its just the 1/35 is smaller so all the scales are also smaller, but they still come through really well.

The 1/35th scale is the way to go for this Rex. The smaller size makes it easier to work with articulation wise and you could display it with one solid leg and one articulated leg and it holds much nicer.

I have to concur with your sentiments. I got both KS exclusives, and while I am impressed by the figure, I feel like the Tyrannosaur line pales in comparison with the articulation and posability of the Ceratopsian line. I got into BotM when I bought the Styracosaurus on a lark a few years ago, and now I own probably 75% of that series. I had a wallet-destroying plan to get the Tyrannosaur species that lived in the same formation as my Ceratopsians, but I will probably save space on my shelf for cyberzoic quadrapeds like the Stegosaurus or continue to customize Hammond Collection dinosaurs via 3D printed parts because I like to be able to play around with my figures. I can do that with HC Rexy or my BotM Adult Triceratops, but not with the BotM Rex.

Personally I find the 1/35th version far more versatile and posable given its smaller size. I'd agree the sculpt itself is still somewhat limited but overall when you really break it in its very well articulated. For example the head is FAR more posable than you give it credit for, but I'd imagine its a lot harder to actually do that on the big boy version compared to the 1/35th. I have 2 of the WWD ones and I honestly find them very posable, especially in the head and neck area. Really my only gripe is the lack of wrist articulation and the fact the tongue on the 1/35th might as well not be articulated. It feels essentially glued in a permanent down position and takes WAYYY to much force to actually move, this isn't an issue on the bigger version from what I've seen. Honestly kinda glad I didn't get the bigger one, its size seems to severely limit its ability as an action figure. The 1/35th one though is perfect, again I don't actually have much issue posing it and since its not gigantic and heavy its not a hastle. Nonetheless though great review! Glad your enjoying the figures as much as I am.

On a more serious note, the lack of a proper stand for this figure is what one might call wacky. The standing legs work great for what they are, but they aren't enough on their own. The articulated legs being relatively useless for actual display makes them feel like more of a gimmick than a feature. And since the solid legs are your only real option for displaying the figure, you end up with incredibly limited options for how you can pose the figure on your shelf. It's the first BotM figure I feel like you just genuinely can't do very much with. And what's more disappointing is that the small rexes aren't THAT much better. They are easier to work with, no doubt, but the same limitations are present, just not as severe. What bums me out the most is that this all could have easily been solved with, you know, a stand. Of any kind. Like, something? An object? Maybe a water bottle? A tree branch? I digress, it just seems like a problem that should have been avoided. I respect David Silva's vision for the standing legs. Using the legs themselves as the stand for the figure is very unique and cool in concept. He even managed to execute the idea very well. It just leaves us with a very specifically designed and limited final product in my opinion. If he hadn't committed so hard to the standing legs, and had instead gave us a more standard display rod or cradle that still allowed us to move the legs freely while displaying the figure, I think that would have been waaaaay more satisfying to me personally.

Anything sculpted by Jake Baardse is worthy of being damn near perfect. I think David did an excellent job with the articulation without compromising on the sculpting and proportions at all. But I definitely agree that it needs a support rod, though. I had to use one of my PNSO rods just to support my 1/35th scale version because the toes kept warping.

I have mine displayed without the bases and they're super stable... with the solid legs. I do feel the articulation is a bit compromised on this one due to the sculpt and the inability to display it permanently with the articulated legs. I haven't even put those legs on to be honest. I understand why the alternate feet don't have peg holes, it's due to the articulation, there's no room for the peg to be deep enough. But I'm still happy I got it! I'm looking forward to the smaller tyrannosaurs, those may actually work with the alternate legs since they're small and lighter.

honestly I dont really care to much if it cant pose that well and lacks a posing rod, and even if you could pose it with the articluated feet I would still be scared to display it like that because of the wear it would put on the jionts after a while because of its wieght. Also I feel like you can make some holes in the articulated feet with the proper drill bit sizes then stick it on the peg and use one artculated and one stagnet leg at the same time. And the set up that im gonna have for mine is a modgeular shelf diorama so not being able to pull extream dynamic poses dosent bother me. If it can look left, right, up and down, and have some decent leg articulation then it dose not bother me, but thats just me. Also its not to late david can re-tool some aspects of it for the cyberzoic line.

I had gotten my 1/18th grey rex a couple months ago and I only just came across this video today. Now I have to open my grey rex box and confirm the instructions for myself. And I was genuinely contemplating getting the 1/18th standard rex too, but now I definitely feel I should wait. I hope David does come across this video and considers sending rex owners an additional base and posing rod for the larger rexes, like he did for the Psittacosaurus, as well as making changes going forward with the larger Wave 3 figures like Daspletosaurus.

I got the Dino Riders one, and it just gorgeous! I’m hoping I can pick up the standard version at some point too! I gave mine a hot bath. And it’s got more flexible, but I would have to agree. It needs some trimming in places to get more movement.

I have the same one you reviewed here and I was pretty disappointed by the neck and tail articulation. My experience with the other dinosaurs they've made had me thinking I'd be able to make this thing turn its head a lot more, and I wish the whole tail was just a wire to be honest. Another thing is just that the weight of it makes the articulated legs struggle to hold its weight at all, and it's really hard to balance it on its feet. The feet on mine in particular are really loose so I can only get it to stand if I balance it on its heels really carefully. Overall it's not as cool as I thought it'd be, maybe I can fix the loose feet with some nail polish but the severe lack of range of motion for the jaw, neck and tail is a real bummer for me who basically wanted to pose this thing in Jurassic Park poses.

I wonder if any of the 1/6 raptor series display rods would work with this? Like the longer jumping rod, etc. If I recall right, I think the two bases are also used on some of the other figures in the series, but the big T. rex gets both of them together with that clip. I think your criticisms are also what I've been seeing from other reviewers as well (such as the neck piece, the limited articulation, and the lack of posing rod), and I hope David has seen them so he can improve going forward, such as with the Wave 3 Tyrannosaur series figures (Gorgosaurus, Tarbosaurus, etc), or the Cyberzoic figures (Acrocanthosaurus, etc), if not a version 2.0 of this figure. In comparison I think the raptors had more articulation in their necks, and I think I would have preferred something similar on these larger theropods. Still aside from those issues, I would like to get my hands on this eventually. It was so imposing when I got to see the prototype in person a few years back (posted pics on my instagram). Plus it was part of the reason I shelled out as much as I did for the adult Triceratops. I wanted a big T. rex to go with it too. In the meantime I got the 1/35th WWD version to enjoy, and also the upcoming Guanlong and Yutyrannus soon enough.

I wish this had the same range of poseability as the Hammond Collection Rex- which can be posed as walking, squatting, rear up, looking every which way, and then some. Or at least had the neck hood made of softer/rubbery plastic, with a series of ball sockets inside (think Hot Toys Alien figures of yesteryear), and the body having ratcheting hip/knee/ankle joints. The interchangeable feet, could've been solved with feet similar to the MASSIVE Kitzconcept Rathalos dragon (each toe digit base moves, toe joint, INCLUDING each claw itself- its insane- and what THIS figure should have had).

So i recently got my first botm figure (nasutoceratops) and the joints are pretty stiff, and i know you've recommended using a hairdryer before. I've never done this, so i was just wondering how long i should heat it up for. Keep up the great work and have a good week!

Only use the hairdryer for a few minutes max, you don’t want to force too much heat on the plastic joints as that will cause them to soften up and become a little looser than you’d like them to do.

i have it, ya the neck sleeve is rather annoying for possibility, i also wish the jaw opened more, it won't fit around the adult trikes neck or even wide enough to try for a back bite. also mine to has a paint defect the greyish colour for the brow ran on to the scales between the brow and nasal ridges ( looks like they try'ed to wipe it off ) and under the brow and a portion above the eye are not painted it looks like primer is showing through.

You don't have to use the base. You need to use the solid legs for the base only, but if you don't want the base, then you can use the articulated legs

I skipped the 1/18 scale and only got the 1/35 scale. love the sculpt and the paint application, but I'm very disappointed in the articulation. The limitations in the neck and the mouth range really limit how you can pose the figure and make putting it in a true roaring pose difficult. I really feel like the tail should have been broken up into a few more segments, because as it is the chuncks look fairly awkward and don't have a lot of range. The gap when you move the legs is also super noticeable and reminds me a lot of the Neca Godzilla 2014, which is a really inferior design than the way Bandai/SH Monsterarts does their segmented hips. I still love the figure, but it's got me worried about the rest of the line, especially the Tarbosaurus I have on pre-order.

Hello Hope all is well. Let's face it, All therapod figures need extra support. I have drilled holes in the bottom of the feet in some of my dinos and cut my own rods. It's not that hard. But for what we pay for some of these, a nice display base should be included. This T-Rex is a piece of art for sure. Don't be afraid to be clever.

I don't know if it's just mine but its legs are really hard to work with, some parts are too loose, and some are too tight, and was not fun to break in. I felt a smidge of regret spending over 200 bucks on it. Don't get me wrong, I like it, but I don't love it.
