It isn't "inflation", it is hype and greed. I can find any number of superb bottles in the $30-$65 range. Heck, I was sipping on some Early Times BIB this weekend that is available locally for $19 on sale. And it was great! Henry McKenna used to be a solid buy at $35 then it won a medal and now it's $70. Booker's used to be worth the price at $60ish now it is a crap shoot at $100+. And don't get me going on cash grab artists like Kentucky Owl. I'll drink New Riff SB picks, or KC SB, Green River FB, OF 1920, or 1792 BIB, or Rare Breed, etc. all day long without feeling like I've just gotten screwed with my pants on.

I agree, I made the bookers reference as well -- an excellent buy at $60-$70 years ago is now "iffy" at $110-$120. I passed on Peerless DO Rye for $120 and grabbed Sagamore DO Rye for $55 instead... A MUCH BETTER purchase. It's excellent and there's no way Peerless is worth 2x the price for the same good taste.

I think we are not calling it what it really is. It's not inflation. It's price gouging and now that the bourbon buyer has matured there is less desire to drop money on high price tags when you know of staple bottles and picks that you will enjoy for a better price.

Too many poeple 'collecting' bottles as well. I own a liquor store and have several customers with collections of several hundred bottles or more just sitting unopoend collecting dust on their shelves at home. As one of the few stores in our area that sells allocations exclusively at msrp i cringe when collectors come in and grab their 15th bottle of e.h. taylor. Flip side is i love when someone that actually drinks the juice gets lucky and finds something special.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! for doing this video. I'm a relatively new bourbon enthusiast (2 years), and I really enjoy a lot of the whiskey tubers and their opinions. Oftentimes, I see a review, would like to try the product, and just based on msrp I can't justify going out and buying a bottle if it's even available in my area. I do have plenty of disposable income, and my wife is cool with my "hobby" and some of the cost involved. But I also remember when I didn't have $$ and that side of me kicks in when I start considering purchases. I have never paid secondary prices for anything, and I won't. FOMO is not a thing for me. I can tolerate a little markup and realize stores need to make $$, but c'mon. Also, I buy bourbon to drink and share. Having shelves full of open bottles seems silly to me.

Plenty of bourbons that are amazing around $50. Wild Turkey Rare Breed, Heaven Hill BiB, Michters, and 1792 are my go to. Occasionally I’ll get Eagle Rare for $42 or Buffalo Trace for $27.

I’ve tried so many different bourbons in the past 2 years, allocated and standard offerings. My issue is, the allocated stuff has not blown me away that would in anyway make me spend more than $50 a bottle now. I’ve been enjoying super cheap bottles way more than allocated or hyped bottles. Best example, last week I had a pour of George T Stagg in a flight at a restaurant, and I really enjoyed Barrel Foundations over it.

What you have described repeatedly as inflation is NOT inflation! It is profiteering/greed/price gouging and more. Inflation is a red herring! Figuring in inflation for the past 5 years would only account for approximately 23% in increases across the board. Therefore, if inflation was the ONLY factor, a $60 bottle SHOULD cost $73.80. A $75 bottle would go up to $92.25 and a $100 bottle would be $123. Inflation rate for 2019=1.81%; 2020=1.23%; 2021=4.70%; 2022=8.00%; 2023=3.4%; 2024 (est.)=2.57%

Hell, inflation is now at around 3% year over year. It isn't inflation driving bourbon prices. It's consumers falling for the hype. Those $200 bottles you spoke about are insane. If you drink like I do , daily about 4oz, I have found that after the first sip or two pretty much any decent whiskey tastes great. Give me Rebel 100 at $18 or WT101 at $25 and I'm just fine.
@darthsteve31452 ай бұрын
In 2023, the average rate of inflation was 4.1%. In 2022, the average rate of inflation was 8.0%. In 2021, the average rate of inflation was 4.7%. In 2020, the average rate of inflation was 1.2% The rate of increase for bottle prices is nowhere near inflation. Most of this can be attributed to other factors like price gouging, hype from influencers, greed. The price we pay to be fans. It will crash at some point.

I am there now. I have a good amount of whiskey to hold me for several years to come. But, I have personally passed on a Russel’s 15 for the simple point of it being $250 MSRP. I passed on Wild Turkey Triumph for being $300 MSRP. I have said this about any secondary price whiskey, it stays on the shelves till price or the shelf breaks. The state of whiskey prices will not change till the product stops moving. That is when manufacturers, distributors, and store merchants will finally start changing the price back to reasonable again.

@FirstSip-LastDrop2 ай бұрын
Not holding my breath. If anything I’m enjoying working down a well established collection that wasn’t over priced to get. The way I see it, when Wild Turkey puts out a bourbon like Russel’s 15, good tasting, hyped by KZbinrs, and priced far ahead what is reasonable. They are experimenting with the market. Are people willing to pay $250 to $300 a bottle. The other manufacturers will follow suit if Wild Turkey proves successful. I’m not here to influence others. I won’t buy it for that price and since that is MSRP, so I won’t buy it. I’m not struggling to hold my breathe. I have a Russel’s 10 and a Wild Turkey Rare Breed that I truly enjoy. I would speculate that Russel’s 15 has a flavor profile similar with a touch more age to it. I’m ok with the $250 in my pocket or paying for a me to sit near a fire pit at the beach enjoying my Rare Breed at sunset.

Inflation is not the cause of the rise in the cost of bourbon. Simple analysis can show you the cost of Corn, Wheat and Rye. Currently Corn goes for 4.30 a bushel and Wheat is at 6.4, Rye is primarily imported into the USA from Canada and Germany. The highest price for corn was in 2022 at 6.94 and wheat was at 9.52. so over the past few years the cost has come down, if you look 10 years back the cost was way lower than it is today, Not the full picture of the break down of the actual commodities needed for bourbon. Now I do believe that Distributors are running the price up and this would be considered Price Gouging. Yes companies do not work for free but just raising the price for the heck of it is not fair. Also they hold back bottles and make the small liquor stores buy tons of other stuff to get a few allocated bottles. I do find that all of you tubbers and tick tokers all follow the same suit now. RR 15 is a great example of over hyping a bottle. Great show keep up the good work!!!!

I've started focusing my sites on local distilleries. Sagamore and Old Line are only a 30 minute drive away for me. For with some bottles its inflation. for most it is greed from the distillers or their parent companies. They have seen secondary market pricing and that people were willing to pay big $$ for bottles for a long time in addition to the pandemic. Now they want a piece of the action. I've seen OF Single Barrel store picks go from $71.99 to $89.99 in a year. Bookers is now min $105 when in 2019 it was $78ish at Total Wine. These producers are using supply chain costs and other excuses to charge big $$ for their offerings imo. I'm waiting for them to go on sale.

Most of the pricing for allocated whiskey is not inflation-driven. It’s demand. It’s what the market will bear, and secondary prices are the best indicator of that.

What you’re lamenting is just capitalism at work - high demand inevitably leads to price increases. The market will stabilize once people refuse to pay any more for a product. But I see people doing bourbon hunts and getting good prices on bottles at grocery stores I wish I could get where I live. I would welcome that. I keep seeing videos pop up from early 2024 asking/claiming the bottom is gonna drop from bourbon. Yet new releases are coming out and are higher prices still…and secondary is crazy. Not seeing the bottom for sure. The commodities that make up the core of bourbon-corn, barley, wheat, etc…ain’t cheap-the costs to produce-labor, electricity, storing it-all because of the Biden/HARRIS economy. Their policies have driven the cost of everything up-we all feel it. We all have to decide where to spend our money…feeding our family, paying bills…bourbon should take a back seat. But there will always be those who are willing to pay those astronomical prices for whiskey as well-whether it’s cause they can, or pride-showing off in a sense. It’s like that in every consumer market these days.

I follow various whisky auctions here in the UK and one running at present, with 7 days still to run, has Michters 20 Kentucky Straight Bourbon at £1,500 with reserve not met, I estimate this will need to have a hammer price between £2,000-£2,500

Distributors are thieves and need to be optional, not obligatory.

I do have an issue with the distributors hiking the price up. I don’t believe that is capitalism because in many states they have monopolies and the states allow it. FL is very frustrating

There has been a large increase in production over the last 5 years. We are just now seeing some of that reaching the market. We will know there is a shift when you can go into any liquor store and just grab a Buffalo Trace, and it isn't surprising that it's available.

Definitely priced out of market after it hits $200. Sooo many good bottles out there to drink at “reasonable” prices. Ie…$50-120!

I had rather let the liquor sit till it rots rather than be screwed over by a greedy SOB...and it's 100 percent greed
