Question: Is the cargo hold of a passenger aircraft pressurized?
Think about it! What else travels in the cargo hold and needs air to breathe and a regulated temperature to survive a long flight? Your pet! Most pets that are larger than the allowable cabin size get transported in the cargo hold. Also, passengers can have pressure-sensitive items, like shampoo bootles etc., in their luggage which could pop open causing some real trouble for the airlines. So yes, it's pressurized!
Now you know! Like and follow for more aviation facts every day.

I have a friend who has flown in the cargo hold a few times, because when horses are transported by air, there needs to be a person there to monitor them and make sure they don't get agitated.

Do they have a jump seat for Take off and landing? Also what do they do for food, water and toilet, is there like a ladder or stairs to the main cabin area? Genuinely curious because this is the first time I heard of this.

Horses are not fitting in the cargo hold of a passenger jet, under the floor where passengers sit. The video was misleading as it showed a cargo aircraft. Of course the main deck cargo area of a cargo jet, where horses would travel, is pressurized

Horses are flown on cargo planes in the cabin area. They are loaded onto special stalls which are on pallets. They're raised up to the level of the aircraft doorway and slid into position on special pallet locks.. I used to ship dogs from the UK to New York on these horse charters. There are grooms and a courier on board. They usually play with the puppies to amuse themselves. I have flown to Miami as an "extra groom" to visit my folks rather than take a commercial flight.

It doesnt have to be presurized for the structural strength. The floor structure is made up of large metallic crossbeams. And as per the airworthiness requirements. The manufactures have to demonstrate that in the event of a decompression, the structural strength wont be significantly comprimised. And the shock loads during a rapid decompression will be higher compared to the sustained loads of having half the fuselage pressurized. Actually. Some A/C that dont have a fire extinguishing system, use a controlled decompression to supress fires.

I flew the B737 for many years. When we started passenger service with that airplane, we learned the hard way that, while both cargo holds are pressurized, only the forward hold is heated. That unfortunate dog loaded in the aft hold arrived quite dead. After that, we always loaded live animals in the front, and human remains in the rear. Another incident: While I was doing my walk-around inspection at an enroute stop, one of the rampers said, "Come look at this," pointing at the forward hold. I looked inside to see another ramper on his knees trying to catch a flock of chicks that had escaped their cage.

Additional fact: Many small jets have rear cargo compartments that are neither heated nor pressurized. The Citation CJ1 is one such aircraft. If you have luggage that needs room temperature and/or pressure, you are advised to bring it into the main cabin and stow it in the back. These are very small jets, by the way (eight passengers or less). The larger executive jets (15 passengers or more) generally have pressurized cargo holds.

More to the point, if the cargo hold were not pressurized, the pressurized cabin above it, having a flat floor, would cause the floor to bulge downward into the cargo hold, unless it was really strong, which would make it far too heavy. It is much lighter to have a fully pressurized fuselage, than to have a flat floor to a pressurized cabin with a pressurized cargo hold below it.

The most efficient structure to withstand pressure is a sphere. After that it's a cylinder. This is the real reason a fuselage is pressurised. Structurally a flat cabin floor under pressure would be horrendously inefficient and heavy.

@Mark Evans If a cargo door comes off at altitude, the underfloor zone will be subject to a sudden lower pressure than the cabin. There will be a pressure differential on the floor which probably was never designed for such. Some structures have blow-off panels so that pressures can equalise. In a Japanese 747 the rear pressure bulkhead leaked and cabin pressure inflated the fin and it exploded.

It could also cause unwanted stresses in the structure. It is best to pressurize a cylindrical shape like a soda can or aircraft fuselage opposed to segmenting a chunk out of the cylindrical shape to be unpressurized. I remember working on the old DC-9's and we could only put living animals in the forward cargo hold because the avionics would heat it enough so the animals wouldn't freeze. The exception was if we were loading live chicks we could put them in the aft hold because they produced so much heat they wouldn't freeze.

It is pressurized for another reason: you can't have half a cylinder (lenghtwise) pressurized and the other unpressurized without having that floor inbetween bulge, causing structural issues. You have to get those two hemicylinders at the same pressure

i love my dog too and all other animals equally and while i vouch for pets to be put in the cabin, this pilot made me more comfortable about them being there. but, there still comes the issue of emergencies and water landings and harsh flights ESPECIALLY water landings where the pets may not get the equal chance of living like us and surviving like us. that's the problem which i want solved so so bad. that's why while cargo hold can be safe, it can also be deadly. they belong in the cabin. but i have no freaking idea WHEN they will start putting them at a floor in the airplane higher than cargo. no animal with 4 legs or 2 should be put there. it just seems so so backwards we're still doing that even in the year 2024. and after so many pet incidents, you'd think they'd be a little more compassionate but, no. this pilot seems like an amazing person and pilot though and he put me at ease a little but it still happens. i just wish more pilots would speak up about that. like they are just like us, they don't want to die especially in an airplane. away from their OWN family. by that, it can be humans or their biological ones. so, things still need to evolve. blows my mind how even the rescue on the ground never intend to look for any pets. like, wtf is wrong with your hearts and shouldn't you be a little reminded of a pet you have to just be rescuing humans. like some "people" don't even deserve to be in the cabin, let alone be rescued. if you are rescuing humans you should also rescue animals. period. they got enough people to do it too. some FA's focus on the humans while other crew/flight attendants focus on the animals. if they are on there, they should be equally flown. but, still a good video and the pilot seems like he really cares. and i love your pet too haha may you and your pet always travel safe. they a bunny? cat, dog?

It's easier to pressurize the under-deck cargo compartment than to not pressurize it. The aircraft's skin is a cylinder that is designed to hold pressure. The flat floor would be harder to build to withstand pressure, and would be prone to punctures from all the passengers mucking about. (High heels and mercury thermometers, for examples.)

Or a pen in a shirt pocket (you know, you put a pen in the pocket to have it quickly at hand) could leak. My dad had this once. Since then he packed pens in a small extra bag. There is not much liquid in a pen, just enough to ruin a shirt under lower pressure... But not enough to flow out of a plastic bag, maybe you put pens in a bag and roll that bag closely and densely, make sure you also cover the edges. No pen should leak out of that... And you can do similar things with a shampoo of course. There's more liquid, but a zip bag which is really flat and tightly closed should have enough spare room to hold back some leaking shampoo. Well, you don't have spare room in the suitcase, so it could still leak through that tightly compressed zip bag - because it had no spare room, it could not expand in thickness...

I see what you probably meaning. an increased inside pressure during flight has no problem "escaping" since this pressure difference isn't "chocking" off it's own escape path. but after landing, the then higher outside pressure doesn't get "in" anymore, because it also presses the "entrance" shut. that's what I think why you're experiencing what you're describing.

the hold has to be pressurized because of the shape of the plane. a cylinder can contain pressure. a flat floor panel can't. the entire fuselage therefore has to be pressurized, except for areas like the landing gear bays, which have special reinforcement. this is actually why the DC10 became a death trap. the cargo doors had defects that allowed them to be improperly latched, and when they blew open, the cabin floor would collapse from the air rushing out from underneath, and the hydraulic flight controls would be destroyed by the collapsing floor. DC10s are no longer used. afaik, the MD11s that replaced them are now only used by FedEx for cargo.

Short final, gear comes out with landing flaps setting. Otherwise you fight the drag too long.
@EdOeuna
@EdOeuna Жыл бұрын
Usually when having to slow down for landing the flaps are incrementally extended. As the aircraft needs to descend and slow then extra drag is required. By about 2500ft the gear is extended and then final flap extended below 2000ft and the aircraft speed is reduced to the final approach speed. Airlines usually have a stable approach requirement to be fully configured and at approach speed by a certain point, e.g. 1000ft above the ground.

Yes. The entire " cylinder" of the fuselage is pressurized interior walls and floors cannot withstand the pressure there is a pressure " wall" just before the tail. The tail and wings are the only ones not pressurized on the entire craft

The only exceptions are special cargo aircraft such as the Airbus Beluga and Boeing Dreamlifter. Which have an unpressurised hold and pressurised crew compartment. Typically cargo aircraft, including the likes of the C130 and AN124, pressurise the entire fuselage. Just like a passenger aircraft.

I dont know why there is a need to carry shampoo or pets 😅 why take such a risk! I am always shutting off my phone (the battery might still leak but it wont never explode when the phone is switched off). NEVER! I dont want to cause any trouble. You get shampoos in Hotels you can find and go to the grocery store to buy them (this way you will be able to interact with the local and just explore the area (if that gets you by!).

And that's not the cargo hold of a passenger jet. That video is of the interior OF A CARGO JET!

A little disappointed... The images shown are from a cargo airplane not from the cargo area of a passenger plane. Except the very last image with the dogs which is probably the only correct one.

Tell me though in cheap airlines I’ve noticed that my language had freezes on the side let’s say when I flew from Corfu to London with ryan air when I got my language there was a freeze stop on the side it was white and really cold and I’m surprised it was still cold for a while
