I think there are good reasons for 7 sacraments not 8 or more. If I'm not wrong, the number 7 stands for perfection in the Bible. Maybe, this is the reason for 7 sacraments in Christ's church. Somebody may correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi, the Anglican communion has a 2+5 system which the two would be called sacraments of Christ and the others sacraments of the church, as an Anglo catholic I can affirm 7 sacraments if I wanted, the 2 sacraments issue would be more of a reformed or Lutheran thing, and they affirm those because they affirm that’s what the Bible institute clearly

Of course, Lumen Gentium and CCC use the older style of sacramentum and refer to the Church herself as a sacrament of the unity of God and the unity of humanity. It’s a beautiful concept and very accurate, but it muddies the waters a little when explaining the seven sacraments.
@vinciblegaming68175 ай бұрын
I absolutely love that the catechism calls the church a sacrament. I was taught that sacraments are gifts from God and I’ve had a very high view of the church since well before converting. There’s no way the church body as a whole is not a gift of Grace to the individual believer.
@vinciblegaming68175 ай бұрын
On maintaining 7 while calling the church a sacrament, in studying TOB, I’m convinced marriage and Holy Orders are two sides the same sacrament. It’s just a matter of who your bride/groom is. The church/Jesus or an individually created human woman/man. Both sacraments demonstrate the relationship between Jesus and the Church.

Orthodox agree to the 7 "mysteries", but also include others such as the great blessing of water, tonsuring of monks, and also veneration of icons, and hold that marriage actually can be divided into 3 separate mysteries including betrothal and crowning. The Paschal procession is a "mystery" where we join Christ in destroying the gates of hell, and so is hearing the Gospel at the liturgy.

So Catholics (Peter Lombard according to historians) changed the definition of "Sacraments". Up until the late middle ages the first definition was used. It is my understanding that the early church fathers considered sacraments as anything that signifies Gods Glory and Grace. It is the things God uses to sanctify His people. Be it rites and rituals like Baptism or something beautiful like a sunset. Here is what I found: ‘SACRAMENT’ Historically, the word ‘sacrament’ developed from the Greek word ‘mysterion’ and the Latin word ‘sacramentum’. ‘Mysterion’ means ‘something hidden or secret’ - our word ‘mystery’. The language surrounding ‘sacraments’ did not develop in the Church for some time. We hear of a ritual of baptism in the Christian community of the Acts of the Apostles, and of the ‘breaking of bread’ - the Eucharist (Acts2:38, 41- 42). These celebrations were called by their name, there was no generic term for these experiences. It was not until the third century that the word ‘mysterion’, a word that the pagans used to describe rites of initiation, began to be used to describe Christian rites. In order to avoid any confusion with pagan thinking the theologian Tertullian began to use the Latin word, ‘sacramentum’ for ‘mysterion’ particularly in explaining baptism. The sacramentum was a sacred oath of allegiance to the emperor taken by a Roman soldier. Tertullian suggested that just as the soldier’s oath was an sign of the beginning of a new life, so too was initiation into the Christian community through baptism and eucharist. ‘Sacramentum’ then became a general term for the rites of Christian initiation. DEVELOPMENT A more detailed reflection on the sacraments came from St Augustine of Hippo in the 5th century. Augustine developed the notion that a sacramentum is a sign that sanctifies - makes holy - because it is efficacious - produces the intended effect. For instance, Christ and the Holy Spirit make effective, through grace, the cleansing that water signifies in baptism. It was Augustine who called a sacrament ‘a visible sign of invisible grace’. He also, in his letters referred to a sacramentum as a sacrum signum ‘sign of a sacred thing’ It is worth mentioning that Augustine did not consider only rituals to be sacraments but listed over 300. The Church gradually reduced this by differentiating between rituals and signs and symbols that assist people in prayer and devotion such as holy water, palms, ashes etc. These latter are called sacramentals. Gradually seven major rituals came to be accepted as sacraments, named in 1215 at the Fourth Lateran Council as the sacraments of the Church, confirmed at the Councils of Lyon II (1247), Florence (1439) and Trent (1547). These seven were, as we have today, baptism, confirmation, eucharist, penance, anointing of the dying (today the anointing of the sick), marriage (matrimony) and the ordination of priests. Saint Augustine listed over 300 Sacraments because what was considered a sacrament was different for Augustine and the early church. The question then, is why did the church change the definition? I agree with the earlier definition that was used by Augustine and the early church. There are hundreds of sacraments, things God uses to bless us, draw us to him, and grow our faith. But there are two sacraments Christ specifically instructed His People to participate in as part of the community of believers. Baptism and the Lord's Supper. That is why many protestants don't use the word sacrament but instead use the word ordinances. They are the two things ordained by Christ for all those who come to faith.

@Maximilian010 I’m just asking brother don’t get all excited. So we are In agreement that salvation comes only comes from Jesus Christ. Like it says in the scriptures. “For they don’t understand God’s way of making people right with himself. Refusing to accept God’s way, they cling to their own way of getting right with God by trying to keep the law. For Christ has already accomplished the purpose for which the law was given. As a result, all who believe in him are made right with God. For Moses writes that the law’s way of making a person right with God requires obedience to all of its commands. But faith’s way of getting right with God says, “Don’t say in your heart, ‘Who will go up to heaven?’ (to bring Christ down to earth). And don’t say, ‘Who will go down to the place of the dead?’ (to bring Christ back to life again).” In fact, it says, “The message is very close at hand; it is on your lips and in your heart.” And that message is the very message about faith that we preach: If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved. As the Scriptures tell us, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.” Jew and Gentile are the same in this respect. They have the same Lord, who gives generously to all who call on him.” Romans 10:3-12

@@henrybayard6574 thanks for the information. So what im getting from this is that in order to be made right with God we have to add sacraments for are salvation? ““For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him. “There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son. And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.”” John 3:16-21
