Is the Costco Auto Buying Program Worth it?

The Costco Auto Program gets reviewed by Greg Macke - Your Car Angel. Costco and Triple A have similar program but they all work the same. As a follow up to the, should you buy a new or used car? video, Greg explains how your membership at Costco allows you to use the Auto Program. It has advantages and disadvantages. Dealers pay Costco a marketing fee to be a qualified dealer in order to give members a Costco price. Costco advertises the service as hassle free, but once you walk through the dealer doors you are treated just like a retail customer. The only difference is you have the Costco discount. You are still subjected to all the dealer add-ons like extended warranties, financing, gap insurance, wheel and tire protection and door guards,. Questions such as: what if the dealer doesn't have the car I want? and: do all cars qualify for the Costco discount? and: Is the Costco program hassle free? and finally: is the Costco Program worth it? are all addressed.

I just spent three months training at Honda in Arizona. Didn't watch the whole video. Our sales managers all hated hearing Costco from a customer BUT all the staff used it for themselves and their mothers because it was better than the deal management offered friends and family.

Any program that eliminates the experience of going to a dealership for the nightmare of buying a car is a good thing. Several years ago I attempted to use the Costco car buying program. At the time I dealt with a person who seemed to be working out of her home office. I still got hustled at the recommended dealership.

I bought my car through Costco and did not have any problems. It was an easy, simple, clear purchase. I checked on my own with several dealers to see if I would get a better price than what Costco was offering, and Costco offered the lowest. Even one of the dealers told me that was a good deal. I purchased it from one of the dealers Costco sent me. They were ready for me and no hassles. Where I paid a lot of money was in the insurance for life. They have “silver” I think they call it, which is what I bought. Other than that, I highly recommend it. P.S. Costco kept following up with me via email & phone, to see how everything was going during and after the transaction. I’m in CA.

I recently went to trade my vehicle for a different one and wanted to test the Costco discount. I went to two different Toyota dealers. One I didn’t mention Costco (a) and the other dealer is where Costco sent me (b). Dealer (a) was the pressure filled sales deal that literally chased me out of the dealer trying to offer their bottom dollar deal. It was decent but still not where I wanted to be. Dealer (a) continued to call two times that same day to offer a better deal. Dealer (b) with the Costco qualified sales person had a completely hassle free environment. He printed out several truck info sheets that I was interested in. Gave me the Costco no haggle deal price and off I went. When we buy my wife’s next vehicle, the Costco deal is definitely the way to go for us.

I can tell you as a salesman when someone came and that they were buying with a Costco quotel I didn't sit down or do any negotiating because I already knew I was just going to make $100 off the sale so I have to tell you yes it was very well worth it management sales finance everybody get you in and out in 30 minutes or less so the hassle of trying to negotiate with a salesman was gone once again I hated it because I made absolutely nothing off of it but as the buyer you were in and out real fast the only thing you paid extra was if you bought any extras for your car when you saw the finance manager which I would highly highly highly encourage you to never do so because it's all over priced it's just a convenience and remember the Costco price does not include sales tax title and registration which you should find out before you get to dealer so you have an idea tell your dealer you want the Costco price out the door do it at the end of the month you're more than likely to get a yes than at the beginning of the month most of your managers will say no

Went to a Toyota dealer in Reno and road tested a new 2014 four door 4x4 short bed Tacoma that they settled on $36,450 as the price for this pickup after haggling for 1 1/2 hours. We then went to the Carson City Toyota dealer and road tested another Tacoma identical except the color. We showed them our Costco card and they very quickly put the information into the computer giving the price for this Tacoma at $32,100. We said we like the pickup, but we liked the color and interior color of the pickup in Reno. They said they can get that pickup for the same price which we said great! Since they didn't have the Tacoma there, we were leaving saying we will see you tomorrow morning. The deal then said how about $31,600 if you do the deal now, We said if it is that much tomorrow, we will buy it which we did. almost a $5,000 savings on the same pickup through Costco.

Not sure what u r talking about, I have tried both AAA, Costco and even Truecars.com, bought 2 cars through Costco program within the pass 8 years and absolutely love it, not only got about 10% off retail price, also got the dealer throw in accessories free for us, plus 0% interest loan, and we say no to all the extra like gap insurance, security, we had a kid with us plus a pregnant wife, the dealer bend their ass backwards to speed up the process for us to get out of there and make the deal happen, it was around mid March, no major holiday sales, it was the newest car model, wasn't even left over last year model, never get that kind of deal with AAA or truecars. So those had trouble with it either have crappy local costco and dealer relationship or not doing it correctly.

I've bought 6 vehicles in my life and negotiated good prices on all my vehicles. My last purchase was a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu, and I used the Costco Auto Program. Yes, the Costco negotiated price was something I could have done on my own , I may have even done better. Having said that, I didn't have to play the whole cat and mouse game of going back and forth for hours. It was hassle free, and well worth the time I saved. I've had 3 co-workers utilize the program as well, and they all had positive results too. The only negative story I've heard, was when someone tried to buy a motorcycle. The motorcycle dealer, kept trying to talk the customer out of the bike, and have him purchase a different bike. The dealer was trying to tell him the motorcycle was too small for him, and wouldn't show him the Costco negotiated price for that particular model.

@@user-tb7rn1il3q Nope. 4Runner new and gently used prices are too inflated. Same goes for Subarus and Jeep Wranglers. for 4Runners, Subaru, and Jeep Wrangler the sweet spot is ~5 years old. YourCarAngel did a whole video on the varying sweet spots of different vehicles. Different case for Toyota and Honda as they no longer hold the initial value they once did of years past. Example - my brother just bought a 3 yrs old certified used Camry w/ 31,000 miles for $14,200. In other words, you only need to wait 3 yrs for a Camry to save on the 40% depreciation drop. for 4Runners, Subarus, and Jeep Wranglers it takes way longer (about 5 yrs on avg)

Medic311 Toyota’s in general hold their values better than ever. The previous body style Camry was a flop (for Toyota). They are good cars but not exactly desirable. 2010 4Rs with 200k are selling for $20k, might as well buy new for $35k.

I usually had little difficulty finding better prices than those at Costco for most of the things I've bought over the years. Most recently I was in the market for tires. Showed them the prices for several of the brands that I would consider for my car and the tire salesman there said that he couldn't even match those prices. So I bought from Tire Rack. My installer actually went to one of their warehouses to pick them up thus saving the shipping charges. So that saved me even more. With shipping, they were still cheaper than Costco. Costco must be great for some things. All those shoppers can't be wrong. I used to buy their tennis shoes (really good) but they aren't carried any more. Their apple pies were excellent, but also discontinued, at least for most of the year. Like their cashews, other nuts, etc. but that's about it.

I have purchased a vehicle using the Costco Auto program. It is worth it. This guy is a little misleading. Trust me, you don't want to negotiate.. That means you will lose. The best thing to do is find dealers who have the partnership with Costco. When you find the car you want at the dealer you ask them for the "Costco Price Sheet" for that specific vehicle.. It will come with the Costco logo on it. Don't let them give you a price that doesn't have the Costco logo. You take it or leave it. It is that simple. The finance guy did over me insurance and protection plans, but there was not pressure. I said no to all and walked out getting a great deal on a brand new CRV. The CRV I purchased was the newest model and only had been out for 6 months.

@@rubenrodriguez6979 I've done alot of research and it looks like the 2019 Hybrid RAV4 is the one to get. It gets 39 mpg combined. The 1st gen Prius is rated at 41. The RAV4 Hybrid has 219 HP, which is more powerful than a 2007 V6 Highlander.

sounds like a come on to me. The price has to include the money the dealer pays costo for the lead generator! Not the car you want but close to?? the hell with that. I find that when I go to the dealer also. they want non refundable money down just to get you the actual car you want. If I'm buying the car i get to make those decisions not the dealer. I have found the dealers are all the same they want to sell you the crap they have not the car you want!

With all of the basic information you can find on the internet, dealerships have really lost leverage when it comes to going back & forth. Costco's intentions are in the right place but it all depends on what kind of salesperson you get.

In CT, the participating Costco dealers had agreed to a certain discount below invoice. Typically $1500 below invoice. But then they turn around and mark up the documentation fees by $300 to offset this agreed upon discount. Then they etch the glass with the VIN number and charge $300, something that you can do yourself for $30. And so on. Bottom line is you stead need to negotiate vigorously or you do not save money with the Costco program. I found I could walk into a non participating Costco dealer and use the Costco leverage to negotiate a better price. I like Toyota vehicles, but the Toyota dealers where I live are very shady characters. I think it results from the product being so good, that the dealers can behave badly and get away with it.

Absolutely incorrect. Costco makes the dealer send the customer an exact qoute base off the invoice of the a particular vehicle with that vehicles vin number. It also has to include only rebates that all customer customers qualify for. Then after your purchase cost makes the dealer send them a copy of the purchase order and invoice to make sure it matches the exact amount that Costco has negotiated with the dealer. All in all it's a good program used by volume dealers only because the price is usually under dealer cost. You could get the same deal if you researched and then spent hours going back in forth with a dealer but it saves you and the dealership time. So your not on your own and the price is exact not estimated.

Very true. But since your quote is vin number specific it's more than likely on an in stock until. Costco will not let you send the quote without it. It would seem like a lot for a dealer to search for a vin number to car not on the lot but anything is possible. 🤷‍♂️

Not quite true. I love COSTCO, but the car buying is NOT a good deal. If you live in a major metropolitan area and know what car you want. Google dealers and make a list. Call each dealer and ask for their best price for the car, options and colors you want. Tell them they are in a bidding situation. You will find a BETTER price than COSTCO's price! I've done it twice. You don't care where the car comes from, it's new. I was so disappointed in COSTCO. The only time they've failed me.
