Is the Elgato Prompter Really the Best?

The @elgato Prompter has been hailed as a huge success, and called the best teleprompter ever... the teleprompter for everyone... the perfect prompter... and many more overwhelmingly positive things by all of the creators who have reviewed it.

It would have definitely been so much better if they released a 12 inch screen on top of their 9 inch. I am sure the second version will be better, but we'll never know when it will arrive. Those waiting for a StreamDeck+ with more buttons are still waiting. So Im getting this now

Elgatos Promter software feels a bit like Beta software to me really.... certainly lacking a lot of features at the moment!

Another top notch live, Alec - bravo! 👏 Very informative. I use a 16” teleprompter mounted on a tripod with the Sony ZVE10, and I use a reconditioned iPad Pro 12.9” for the monitor (flipped using the Duet app). There were some teething problems to start with, but it now runs perfectly with my M3 Max MBP; so, apart from dusting the iPad occasionally, everything stays exactly where it is! 😬 I agree with your point about a larger screen being important for Zoom calls; an Elgato Prompter XL with improved software would sweep the board…

Thanks Jesse! It's definitely worth the extra effort to setup a larger teleprompter over the Elgato Prompter. Having been used to the 12.5" screen on my teleprompter, the Elgato prompter suddenly felt more toy like!

How are you getting the monitor with zoom to auto reverse so it looks right in teleprompter and not upside down?

I'm using a field monitor in my Teleprompter whcih has biuilt in function to flip the screen vertically and/or horizontally. The Elgato Prompter does the flipping automatically.

@@TakeOneTech Thank you for letting me know. I purchased the Prompter People Pocket Cue V2 thinking I would use an iPad. Didn’t realize that iPad doesn’t flip for Zoom calls etc. I wanted to get a monitor for it but the one they sell is $270.

This is amazing because you are talking about my situation. I have had the Desview T2 then the Desview T3 with the A7 Lilliput for the last 4 years. I recently purchased the larger 10 in Lilliput but I had to get a tablet stand to hold it and position it under the Desview. This for me to to cumbersome and not as clean as using the smaller A7. I have been looking into the Elgato promoter even before it was released. After reading the resolution I thought that I wouldn’t be as clear as the Lilliput. Is the picture on the Elgato just as clear and the Lilliput? Thanks

Technically the screen quality on the lilliputs will be superior to the Elgato prompter.... they are after all intended as precision field monitors and are both 4K, while the Elgato is 1024 x 600. however Even on my 12" Lilliput I set my resolution to 720p because I want the interface elements to be larger on the screen. So in that respect I believe Elgato made the right choice with resolution. I mentioned in the livestream that I did notice some issues with the Elgato when I have anything light coloured on the screen... it seems to give a 'misty' glow in the camera output. I can only think that this is related to the glass they have used in reflector. People have said "just turn down the monitor brightness' but it is not something I have ever experiences with any of my other teleprompters, so it does seem specific to the Elgato Prompter. I ultimately upgraded my 7" lilliput & Desview T3 combo to a lager teleprompter with a 12.5" liilliput. I prefer the larger size as I find it much better on Zoom calls which is my primary use case. Therefore I will not be switching to the Elgato prompter as it feels like a distinct downgrade in screen size. However since you have said that you found the larger screen setup more cumbersome, then you will definitely like the Prompter... it is a significant upgrade on the 7" lilliput in terms of screen real estate without adding much more bulk. In fact, given that it is all in one, it almost feels less bulky than the Desview/Lilliput combo. Hope that helps! :-)

There is not a custom iPhone mount, as such, however you can use any generic iphone mount (such as this: amzn.to/3V1bki5 ) and then use screw that to the same plate I had my ZV1 mounted on in the video. (The plate and screw are provided with the prompter).

With my weekly livestreams I tend to take a deep dive into a particular topic and thats what I did here.... I felt that in order for people to really understand all of the hype around Prompter, there needed to be context given in terms of exactly what a teleprompter is (many people don't know the full use cases for such a a device) and then the other offerings and my experience of using them and thus where the Prompter excelled and where it stumbled. The of course it was a livestream so took audience comments and questions which was the final half hour. With that in mind, it was not intended to be a concise review... I'll be posting a separate shorter (sub 30 min) recorded video with that in the coming days .... I'll also be posting a separate step by step setup tutorial as well.... Fortunately KZbin displays the video length on the thumbnails so folks know what they are getting into before they click through! They also indicate if it was a live stream, as I know some folks prefer pre-recorded/edited content to live streams
