I have a 1994 EVO 1200 Sportster I got for $100 that had not been turned over 14 years. I put a kit in the carb and changed engine and transmission oils and it wouldn't start because it wasn't getting fuel to the cylinders. I put the old float back in and it started right up about the second revolution. I've been riding it all summer. It's a great bike. I still have some cosmetic issues that are my planned winter project. I love Sportsters. I love all the old Harleys but have never been a big fan of baggers. I love to ride and when I go on trips a tent and sleeping bag on the handlebars for when there's no room available is all I need. Oh I have my little throw-over saddlebags. 1986-88 883 had factory close ratio gearbox. This helped to optimize gearing for high performance. 18 -inch rear wheel made them spot on. The 86-87 883 had a factory bathtub head, but very small valves. It wasn't long and Mr Branch and others had extra- long 1200 conversion valves for these shallow 49cc chambers that allowed the same size valves as an OE 1200 (not 1100) XL. The 86-87 1100 had a factory bathtub head with large chamber and 1.840 intake valve. I can't recall exhaust size, but it was same as Big Twin, if my memory serves. These, until the Buell Thunderstorm head hit the street, were the heads we all used for racing. I can't recall if Mr. Branch stated in that tech book that it's he that invented the bathtub, or "Branch #4" chamber, as we called it. I'd have to pull out the copy he was so nice as to autograph for me. After the factory bathtub heads went away, the sportster heads pretty much sucked, but the 883 was the best as you could manipulate the chamber shape, valve sizes, port layout, etc because there was so much metal to be moved. I've run 9.9 on a 1200 in a stock chassis, and I was an also ran against the guys who really knew what's up.

@@ranchodeluxe1 he calls it the "no 4 head" but describes it a lot like a bathtub chamber, which is also a great chamber shape for air-cooled VW (I've been 10.80s in a street legal, 1800lb with driver, 1584cc turbo VW on pump gas and DOT tires with similar style heads). Seems like the hammer guys and others like the 883 heads as as starting point.. Thanks for the input. That's a great book isn't it?!

Beautiful Video and points. I love the sound of the Shovel head but neither the bike nor the mechanics/spares are available in India. Was contemplating between a pre-owned Triump Tiger 800, Ninja 1000 and the likes, especially for touring. The 300cc Chain driven I'm using froze in the middle of the street as the Chain jumped off the sproket. I was servicing it regularly but it happened. 🤷 Decided i didn't want Chain driven any more. Shaft driven TT1200 & GS1250 were too expensive & huge. Belts was the only option and started evaluating Harleys. Initially 883 then 1200. Was tilted towards the FatBob Dyna but the size & weight was high. Today am a very happy and proud owner of a 2500 miles run preowned 😊 2017 Roadster 1200. Came with a Day maker Headlight, Engine Guard, Mini-Sisy bar + backrest. Have done a few 1500 mile rides and am sooo happy i chose this Bike 🔥. Will never sell. I love the Sportsters from 1957-2021. So many cool ones to choose. I prefer the evo sportster myself but the absolutely coolest Sportster of all time is the 1983 XR 1000. In the movie “The Mannequin” with a young Kim Catrall there was a red 1987 xl 883. I thought that was so cool that bike. The profile of it. Sportsters have a really beautiful side profile. The ironheads are problematic but iconic. The 1978 anniversary xlch 1000 in black and gold is super cool. And of course the 1978 xlcr cafe sportster, designed by Willie G. A bike everyone hated and trashed when I was a kid in the 80s, but is a highly desired collectors item now. One time I remember in 1999 there was a guy who had a clean original 1978 xlcr and wanted to trade it in for a Titan chopper at a Easyrider dealership and the owner wouldn’t take it in on trade calling it a piece of junk nobody wanted. I bought the sporster and if it worked out I would buy a bigger Harley later. Before I left the dealership I read the owners manual on how to break it in. At a 1000 miles i took it to the Harley dealership for service, the oil was full and they gave a list of what was done. At 1200 miles it overheated and started to miss. Harley wouldn't stand by the bike.

I lovey that sportster but sold it 8 years later to buy a house. 20 years forward I bought a used 883 hugger with chrome wheels to ride with my girlfriend with her sportster. Now I’m playing with the idea off getting a used evo fatboy that is for sale locally. These evos are super cheap now. Now I’m a little scared to make myself busy wrenching on the evo big twin regularly to keep it going. The sportsters have no base gasket leak issues and it’s easy to change a belt on it. Other than something going completely wrong, the sportster is pretty much fail proof. I can do the mechanical repairs on the big twin my self if needed but afraid off selling my sportster and regretting it later.

The word "Best" is a very subjective concept. It can mean different things to different folks. So, when I think of "Best" motorcycle engines, I think in terms of reliability. Assuming proper maintenance is observed, (that means performing every item on the maintenance list, on schedule), the Evo big twin is the most reliable big twin engine Harley has produced to date. I think it is slightly more reliable than the Evo Sportster. Overall however, the most reliable engine Harley ever made is the WL. Those little darlings are practically bullet proof. You can't kill them. Of course, if you add performance modifications into the equation, that's a whole different ball of wax. My opinion comes from having ridden, raced, and built motorcycles starting in 1963. I also turned wrenches on these things for a living for a good many years.

The Evo big twin is a fine piece of machinery, I just am a little more partial to its little sibling!

Last year, when I was looking for a new bike to replace my 78 Goldwing, someone or I should say many people online and in-person told me to get a sportster because of reliability. I was not a fan of Harley's but after I test road a few I understood. So I bought the creepiest one in my area. Although frustrating at times and having to buy an entire set of standard tools, I love working on it.

Yeah, they need a little love sometimes, but they're pretty great bikes!

People can talk all the crap they want ... the evo sportster is the best platform the MOCO ever made. My wife has a 2009 nightster that's a complete hot rod . I still love my carbuertated night train and my shovelhead but can't discount how well they hit the nail on the head with the sporty. I've worked with some knuckle draggers that think they are girls bikes but they ride gawdy bikes with skulls and mitered apes. Sooooo......

The EVO is absolutely technically better than an iron head. But I ain't going to sell my 82 iron head anytime soon, much prefer the old rattly ironhead lol

Thanks Paul! Great video. I currently have 2 Evo Sportys. I have a 2006 883 and a 2007 1200 that I actually won on a raffle at Shovelheadffej KZbin channel. Love my Sportys!

Liquid cooled abomination. Well put.

I would have preferred a liquid cooled progression of the Evo than the trouble prone Revolution. Plus the water jacket or whatever that thing is over the engine looks like a plastic cover.

I own a big twin evo and a 1200 evo sportster. I can tell you without a doubt the sportster is faster. Both carb bikes, both stock motors, and the sportster is all around faster.
