That's what a HARLEY sounds like. The new ones sound like a fkn Virago.

The worst enemy of any Ironhead Sportster are the owners after the first owner. Restore it. Put it back the way HD-Milwaukie made it in 1985.

With your experience, I wanted to ask for your opinion. Locally to me, I typically find sportsters running used on FB marketplace for the same price but in most cases a little more than full-size Harley evo’s and even within the early twin cam years. So my question is with the price comparison I mentioned, what would you suggest for a late 40’s man looking for a 1st Harley? I’m able and fairly knowledgeable with general mechanics and even small engines but new to motorcycles as I haven’t owned nor ridden in over 20 years and wanting to get into it.

Awesome fix for small money ! I have drag pipes on my 83 ironhead but havent gotten around to riding it enough to notice the sag. Still needs some TLC before that.. (brakes, indicators, air filter that was never installed, missing engine bolts). Definitely will keep this in mind thanks for the tip!

Those pre rubber mount Sportsters were solid. They had the trapdoor transmissions that made working on them way easier and you can change the belts waaaaay faster than the big twins.

A well looked after Ironhead is absolutely capable of having only one but constant problem left and that is loose vibrated screws.

I bought a '79 XLCH new, and didn't really have to work on it. Valve adjustment was rare and easy. I rarely did it, but it was easy to do. I changed oils, brake pads, and tires. I didn't really have to work on it and put several tens of thousands of miles on it. I put chains and sprockets on too, I imagine. I don't even remember. What I do remember is the thing never leaked except for some dribble of gas from the carb once in a while. Nothing ever shook loose. It was just a good bike.

2001 old school HD? Uh. okay. I had an 88 that I bought new. First year for CV and no accel. pump. Cal. model ta boot. Ditched for an S&S. Old school to me would be a Flattie or Pan. Semantics!(but I am 68) Cool vid nonetheless. Good job!

Wow, what a great video! Can't believe the guy didn't want to pay a bit more to have you fix the intake leak. Oh well, thanks for the video. Also a Q, would a single carb fart from a Mikuni HSR carb upon startup indicate a intake leak, or something else?

I'm 61 years old and bought a Barn Find 81 AMF Sportster. I'm also a 40 year Master Technician. AMF Harleys dont worry me at all. I think they're kind of nostalgic now. I'll ride my bike with the AMF logo blazing on my tank with pride!

I will definitely try and do better on the next live broadcast! I do look forward to some of your future things you want to do on your vlogs. Photo's of subscriber rides, is always a fun thing. I like when Red Rider does those. Wrench, ride, and stay safe!

Sorry I missed the live show. So I get to watch the rerun!:) What can I say, I go to bed when the sun goes down and I'm up before the rooster crows. I've been stuck in that pattern for years and it works fine for me lol. My mom's side of the family is from your neck of the woods. My grandparents had a place out from the Leslie area and that was country for sure. So I know what you're talking about on living in the sticks. Keep wrenching on those old irons and shovels and stay safe!

Nice breakdown! Thanks for sharing. I just picked up my winter project. A 1995 883 sportster that I'm going to hardtail. Breakdown has been really simple and I like that it's not rubber mounted which is a great point. Picked it up the the Pacific Northwest last month for $2,200 and was babied. So many ideas for it but it helps me fall asleep quickly dreaming about it hehe.

So I was an anti-bagger guy for pretty much the same reason you stated earlier. But, I picked up a 98 FLHCUI a couple months ago and it’s a nice bike to ride. Now to provide some context, I also ride a 78 FXS that is a rigid with an open primary and foot clutch, +6 front end, a 81 ironhead in a paughco frame with a +6 front at 35 rake, and a 07 FXSTC with a foot clutch setup. It’s a stock 98 and it’s kinda fun to jump on that stock Harley and just take a ride.
