Fairphone is the leader in modular cellphone technology, something that very few other companies have managed to do successfully, but is it worth buying?

Nice video! But in my view, it would have been important to mention some other modular phone manufacturers. I guess Fairphone is the most well-known and affordable one (because they've gotten pretty big). But others like Shift and Purism deserve some exposition, I think. Some of the disadvantages that make modular phones unattractive to many people are 1. the lack of choice between models and 2. the outdated hardware. The newest ShiftPhones (6m and 6mq) and the Purism Librem 5 seem to have more state-of-the-art hardware. But they're disproportionally more expensive because they produce very little quantities.

@@schmuelinsky Honestly I didn't even know that they existed. I also had to limit the amount that I talked about in the video because I recognize that most people on my channel aren't that interested in tech so I chose to keep it broad... but you're definitely right!

@Gareth Hall de-googled sounds good. I really appreciate simplicity. I think tech giants make smartphones far to complicated, lots of tech talk many don't understand. "Latest" this and that, much never used on my smartphone or netbook but comes already installed. I don't need it. Good luck Fairphone. (An honest company for a change).

@@muzic12freakzz I had a question once about the back cover of my FP2, Customer service helped me quickly and good. There is a community of users also that help eachother (see the website of FP), so almost always someone can help you along. And since repairing can be done by anyone, you probably don't need them very much :-) Don't know why they don't run Vanilla, go check on their site, you can ask and experience for yourself if they can answer your questions. Software updates are regular and go on for a long time, I had a complete update for my FairPhone2 more than two years after I bought it. That update made it a lot quicker again.

I go by what Fairphone themselves have stated (at least a few years back): That if you have a good working phone, then use that instead of buying a new one. If I ever need to upgrade, then the Fairphone is a great option, but until then I'll get as much life out of my current phone as possible.

Last year my phone died and I had to decide between getting a another one secondhand or investing in a Fairphone 3+ (I live in Portugal, for context). And I decided to support this brand that's actually paving the way towards a more sustainable tech industry! I've had it since October 2020 and honestly it's great for my everyday use. I also work in a B Corp and my boss was inspired by me using it, and also decided to get one for herself. Everyone is very curious when they look a my phone because they don't recogniz the brand, and that has been a good turning point to discuss sustainability with my friends and family and raise awareness. Thank you for including them in your channel Levi, and thank you Fairphone for all that you are doing! It truly feels like change is in our hands.

For the time being, buying a second hand phone/refurbished phone is probably the most cost effective, ethical way to get a good quality phone. That being said, supporting the fair phone is necessary to spark future development in the company and market in order to create better products. It's a bit like supporting Tesla to kickstart the development of battery and electric car technology.

@adrnjgr
@adrnjgr 3 жыл бұрын
Having used both iOS and Android, the major difference I could find was the ecosystem. And even that is debatable. You can easily replace FaceTime and iMessage with WhatsApp/FB Messenger/Signal/Google Duo and so on. And, like the video mentioned, I'm sure a lot of people use Google software on their iPhones anyway. Furthermore, even in terms of UI they are more and more closer to eachother, so there's not a steep learning curve. The one thing that you can't change is the 'feeling' of having an iPhone over an Android.
@erikmnelson77
@erikmnelson77 3 жыл бұрын
@@adrnjgr As a tech person professionally, I see it differently- there is a significant advantage in IOS to people that don't WANT google software- for the "not wanting advertising and location tracking" etc angle. Android phones, even just sitting there, do verifiably send a LOT more data "back home" than apple devices do. I am one of those users, there is no google software on my iphone for just this reason. (Yes I am on youtube, yes I see the irony here, no it's not on my phone) Additionally, Apple is quite unique in just how long they update their phones- old android can be unsafe to use, simply because the company stopped making security updates (especially samsung), and in many cases it is impossible to find anyone able or willing to do it for free (the community keeps a lot of older samsung, motorola, etc devices updated, but it takes a technical user to seek that out. Unpopular models can just go completely unsupported) - apple just does it out of standard practice, so a 2016 iphone is much safer to use than the average 2016 android today. However, fairphone will certainly keep security updates coming out a LOT longer for their old versions than other android phone companies! If I could get a fair-phone with NO google (google-free android is a thing, but not very popular, se /e/os, etc) in the US (working with the radio bands needed) I would strongly consider it. Until then, Iphones are probably the best bet, as even though apple doesn't WANT them to be continually repaired, and actively makes it harder, it is still possible due to their security update commitments, and their popularity so parts are available. (My dream is a fairphone with linux, but linux is NOT ready to be a phone os for the general population- yet. See the pinephone)
@adrnjgr
@adrnjgr 3 жыл бұрын
@@erikmnelson77 Ha, Fairphone with Linux, now that would be something. I get the point on 'no Google' although I don't necessarily trust Apple by default, just because it's not Google, they have their share of sketchy things, you've mentioned a few. When it comes to support, yeah, it's hard to beat them, they're really good at that. Fairphone is doing a pretty good job at providing updates, although it's not entirely up to them ( And Fairphone with /e is a great option, although not mainstream ), Samsung is now offering 4 years of security updates, Google Pixel will, hopefully, up their 3+ year support, plus they do have the Titan M chip for security purposes (good luck hacking that). Me, I'm curious to see where Fairphone is going in terms of software (not sure where Project Treble sits here) and hardware - as the video points out, if this isn't good enough, consumer adoption won't be great.

As a comment about the video quality: This was the fairphone 3+ which has a slightly better camera than the 10% cheaper 3. But you can replace the camera module and go from 3 to 3+ as a friend of mine did. I still have the plain 3 and for simple photos that's good enough. But it is possible that at some point in the future they will release another camera module update to buy for people who have higher expectations. And you can replace the camera module by yourself with only the little screwdriver that is provided with the phone.

I upgraded to a Fairphone 3 last year. And here is how I find them: Pros: -modularity, obviously. It's nice to know that if I wanted to upgrade my camera I could, without buying a new phone. -Screen. The screen is actually pretty good, with one issue. -durability. This phone is like a TANK. Mine came with a plastic bumper, and there is nothing that could break it lol. -The fingerprint sensor is pretty good. -2 sim slots! This is kinda rare on western phones, nice to have. -expandable memory -obviously the social concerns. Cons: - I find the buttons too easy to click, so it's easy to accidentally click them. -I have been having charging issues. The charging cable I bought from them kinda stopped working, so I ended up having to buy a new one. It's a shame. (The "Charging Slowly Issue" is a decently common one amongst Fairphone users.) -The OS is a little unstable? There's a weird thing with the power button and camera that can freeze the screen when you open the phone? Weird but not bad. -i have also been having phonecall issues recently where I cannot hear or be heard by someone I am phoning. I've found some fixes, but I don't think this should happen. -My screen used to be really unresponsive? I am using the blue light screen protector. It's not an issue anymore, but it was slightly annoying when it was. That said, literally just the modularity and social concerns are enough for me to reccomend the phone.

There's a bit of an irony here as they're relying on the big players to drive technology forward and make it accessible through mass production to make their phone. So from what I got from the video, their business model would be unfeasible of not for the Apples and Samsungs of the world. That doesn't diminish what they're trying to do, especially as all new fancy stuff is still based on the same basic materials (rare earth metals, Aluminium, glas etc.). So hopefully they'll help the big brands to make the transition more ethically sources materials and more repairable phones once they're pressured to do so, be it by government regulation or public opinion. I'm incredibly annoyed every time Apple talks about how f****ng sustainable their are with their Aluminium and no more charging bricks (while including a cable that does NOT work with the old charging bricks everybody has as it's USB C to Lightning, not USB A 🤦‍♂️) while using a non-standard port on their phones (not so fun fact: they actively prevented EU legislation aimed at standardizing phone ports), having pioneered the non-replaceable battery and the missing headphone jack and being the king of presenting their incremental yearly updates as something everybody needs to get NOW. The hypocrisy just pisses me of. Not that they're the only ones doing that but they do lay it on especially thick when it comes to how sustainable they are. And there's is that "when apple does it, we can get away with it too" effect.

I'm in the UK and I've known about Fairphone for a long time. Both my dad and I had Fairphone 2s. I love the idea and the company and wanted to stick with them BUT... there were so many glitches with the Fariphone 2 software and they both eventually died within months of each other. They did last for 4+ years though and we were able to replace the battery as well as the other medules that malfunctioned. For someone who is tevch savvy, they are great as there is so much you can do yourself. However, my Dad (70+ yrs) struggled to get on with it and I ended up being his 'tech support' and I'm not that great at it! The forums were helpful but I just wanted a simple phone that I could rely on. When it broke, I couldn't bring myself to spend £500 on a phone that was going to frustrate me, even though I really wanted to support the company. Maybe in the 3+ a lot of these early glitches have been ironed out. A wise man (aka my husband) commented that I couldn't really compare the Fairphone and Iphone as Apple has had many more years to refine their product, so where the Fairphone is now is like the Iphone maybe was 10 years ago. I'm investing in a company that is innovating change and can't expect perfection. Just my perspective on having owned one and used it for a few years. Thanks ofr highlighting them - they are changemakers.

I think your review of the camera was very generous to the Fairphone. I think this phone, from your review of it, would be great for the person who just wants to take photos and just have a basic smart phone. I understand Boss's explanation of switching from iOS to Android, and how it is much better these days, but I don't think it's just Android that is keeping people away, and doesn't seem to be the thing keeping you away. The Google Pixel 4A is a great phone, 50 dollars cheaper than the Fairphone, and is higher quality in the camera dept. When people spend their money, and are looking for a budget phone, they want they best they can get for their money, unfortunately not the best they can get for the environment, for their money. From your review of the phone, I think I would agree with you saying the Fairphone could be the solution for more people... in a couple of years. I switched to Android many years ago (to Samsung Galaxy models) and i don't miss iOS at all. Being able to use SD card is just a thick bonus that makes me stick with non-apple phones. Fairphone seems interesting but i agree with some of other comments that video/image is not there yet. Samsung s10 for instance at some point had better video quality than iphone. Plus all that video stabilisation and wide angle spring etc it's one tool i use for vlogging that delivers pretty good results. So not ready for fair phone yet (i know excuses excuses). But i guess by the time i still be needing a new phone fairphone will improve a lot, so i am excited to look into sustainble phones when i need a new one :-). Thank you for the video, loved it!

Thoughts on Shift Phone (a Fairphone alternative based in Germany)? I'm not sure that Shift has gone to as great lengths as Fairphone to make their supply chain as ethical and sustainable, but they're models are also very modular and repair-oriented.

If you want a better camera wouldn't you upgrade the camera independently of the rest of the phone, year after year, since that is what you can do with a Fairphone. What would the price tag be to own a Fairphone compared to an iPhone in this scenario?

On a similar topic, there is this laptop company that is fully repairable end modular which I am quite interested in. The company is called Framework and deserve some serious visibility. I am not quite sure that this one is as ethically sourced as the fairphone, but it is wayyyy better than most laptops on the market since the other ones are not as easy to repair or upgrade.

I think aesthetics are very important in a phone, and the user experience, that's why the giants sell, fairphone could become very appealing if they pad more attention on the software and the loo of the phone, the regular consumer won't drop their shiny aesthetically pleasing phone that has a lot of added functionality to make their life easier to get the more ethically concious option in my opinion.

I have had a Samsung Galaxy S5 mini for the last 7 years and the only reason I've been reluctant to get rid of it is because it all comes apart like this phone. Have been waiting for this one for a long time! My current phone's screen has just started getting "pixel stains" which I suspect will expand over time so I'm doing some research on which phone to get next. The Fairphone is the first contender and I think I'll get it but, like you, there's a part of me that wish it had stabilised video (and after seeing your footage, just _better_ video altogether! =D) and better image processing software. And maybe a bit of a smaller form factor (though I imagine it's constrained by repairability). But ultimately these don't balance out when I think about the violence and exploitation that go behind the mining of raw minerals as well as the philosophical principle of the "closed" phone which is, in a way, disrespectful. I'm not 100% sure of the choice (and it's not urgent yet) but this is where I'm at.. Thank you for the video!

It will force me to get a new phone and it’s frustrating because the phone works fine . I only mainly use my phone to listen to podcasts ,audio books And make calls. So considering get this phone as a replacement. But worried Android will do the same pull the support for the apps ect and force you to get a new phone ect. Does this happen with fair phone?

“... whereas most iPhones get about a 6.” Likely to become a big fat 0 for the iPhone 12. I have to admit I’d never heard of this brand. Literally just came across them while reading an article in which Greenpeace was, and I kid you not, praising Apple?! Anyway, the article then mentioned this brand and then I found your video. This is a fantastic approach to designing a phone! Why the heck does this device not get more attention? I currently have an iPhone 11 which I detest and regret getting. As other commenters have pointed out, the greenest thing I can none the less do is hold onto it and make it last which is what I’ll be doing. It was either going to be Samsung or Sony next time round but This brand will definitely be on my list now. I see they may even offer camera upgrades too. Thanks for the review. Liked and subscribed.

Some things to consider: - Moving from iOS to android can actually be a big downgrade in terms of apps and that whole ecosystem. Android is a very bloated OS with support for way too many versions and hardware specs, while iOS is carefully managed. That's why iOS tend to have much higher quality apps (and less frustrated developers too). If you use a lot of apps or very specific apps, you should do some research before deciding if you want to switch or not. - If you don't need a new phone at the moment then it's harder to motivate buying a fairphone. It becomes a question of supporting a company that's seemingly doing good for the world but using resources unnecessarily.
