@@mikec.2188 My guy Mike C knows what's up! I feel like the Lord revealing to me/leading me to study the connection between fallen angels and the events of Genesis 6 and the gods and demigods of pagan beliefs has been the single biggest blessing on my walk as a believer. It brings joy to my soul to see others out in the wild talking about it! Making connections like you just did between passages like this from the Bible and pagan myths is so eye opening and to me serves as one of the biggest proofs that our God is THE Creator, THE Lord of All. All the other religions are twistings of the truth but contain bits of real information that backs up the Biblical narrative. Of course, God didn't show this to me until I was first willing to set aside my doubts that I held on to for so long even as a believer, and just say "Lord, I have faith in you regardless of any proof". And THEN He showed me the evidence and there's mountains of it, but I couldn't see it until I was willing to fully have FAITH. Also, in reference to the original comment, I do like the way he presents this in a humble way. I get so tired of people trying to teach on things like this that have multiple interpretations, and not even giving any credence to the fact that the other side has good reasons why they interpret it the way they do. This passage being interpreted as about Satan never sat right with me, even tho Dr. Heiser makes a good argument for it and I have learned a lot from him. Who can say for sure who it's talking about? Yes but he never called him Lucifer, which as was said was a translation of a Hebrew word into the Latin, so from the Latin Vulgate onward that word has been translated into Protestant bibles ever since. But the name Lucifer is never used in the New Testament, ever. Satan is called by many names in the NT but never Lucifer. So perhaps Jesus was referring to something else, with no relation the passages in the OT that the early church fathers interpreted as Satan's fall. Also the name Lucifer was never used in the Septuagint or the Jewish translations of the bible, so this interpretation appears to be wrong. I understand how they could have come up with this interpretation, but it's worth at least considering rethinking one's position on this matter.

It seems to be a reflection/prophecy of Rev 12, not Isaiah, especially when you expand the context to Luke 10:17-19. Satan was referred to as Satan, not Lucifer. He was already the Accuser (as we see in Job) at this point. He might have been Lucifer before (and I lean more to this view), but it doesn't seem like he was at the point of Luke 10 and Rev 12
@harryjones76893 жыл бұрын
Read the context of the conversation: "And the seventy returned with joy, saying, Lord, even the demons are subject unto us in thy name. And he said unto them, "I beheld Satan fallen (,) as lightning from heaven. Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall in any wise hurt you. " (Luke 17-19, ASV) Jesus is answering the disciples who are surprised by the outcome of ministry. Jesus knows the events of Revelations and by overcoming death that the victory is already won: "I beheld Satan fallen" he then gives a visual comparison of the intensity of this defeat/fall "like lightning from heaven" (10:18, NIV). The point of Him bringing up Satan at all is to tell them that Satan is defeated in the following verse: "do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven." If Jesus was simply saying "I saw Satan being cast down from heaven" it doesn't make sense in the conversation because Satan still has power to tempt and corrupt on Earth (Job, Matt 4), *Jesus was talking about Satan's defeat.*

The bible actually does state claims where God wants all men to be saved. In doing such, the gospel, which is the central focus of the text would be made for all to understand.

I find Heiser’s interpretation more convincing. Regarding Isa 14:13 when did Adam ever say “I will ascend to heaven, above the stars of God, I will set my throne on high”. When did he ever express this level of pride? Is this just an oracle against an earthly king? When was the king of Babylon ever called the Day Star, son of dawn? Was he fallen “from heaven”? It’s hard for me to not see the parallels to Satan.
@TheBigCdubya5 жыл бұрын
I think Isaiah 14 says ,”you said in your heart” so its not claiming something that was necessarily spoken out loud. Even if it was we know we don’t have the record of everything Adam ever said but figuratively wouldn’t you say that is exactly what Adam said when he decided and acted to eat the fruit of the forbidden tree. Isn’t the sin of autonomy the expression of pride to say we want to sit on the throne of our lives, making the decisions, and determining what is right for us; thereby, Adam and all of humanity attempt to set our own thrones above God’s. With reference to “Day Star” or “Son of Dawn” Dr. Gentry is saying that those titles are from Canaanite religious myths and are being used by the author to make fun of the king of Babylon the way current media makes fun of politicians by comparing them to others. I do appreciate that Dr. Gentry enters the conversation by admitting that it doesn’t impact our doctrine and we should treat those who hold a differing opinion with respect.

Gentry did not claim that Isa 14 was about Adam. He claimed Isaiah 14 was parodying the story about Athtar in the Baal Cycle. Israel, being full of Baal worshippers, they would have all understood the reference.

That's good! But I want to say: there is some value in scholarship, but much more value in direct experience of God. Theism is not a matter of thinking that something is true and adhering to that, as most people assume, which leads them to question the existence of a supreme being... but it is moreso a matter of transformation of oneself toward becoming like what God is described as, and experiencing the communion with him which enables that, which is partly a type of inner joy or peace. To walk through the world with this peace and love toward Love contained within, and to have your life practically change for the better, your character for the better, is worth more than almost anything that exists. I know that the way I wrote this sounds a bit strange, but I felt moved to help someone who seems to be of good character, who seems to be stuck on an intellectual approach toward God (which has led to apparent atheism) rather than one that also involves feeling and experience.

One of the Achilles heel of modern people is that they imagine themselves so much more knowledgeable and beyond their predecessors. Academia is infested with this sort of thought. Now I think he's not altogether wrong, but instead of reading it to be necessarily one way and not realizing there are multiple meanings that are behind these verses. Not either/or but both/and. Chapter 7 in the book of Daniel may also be helpful in it's description of the Ancient of Days and approaching him to receive your kingdom name. Just know that the name God gives you is already within the meaning of the one Jesus obtained through his death, burial and resurrection. Michael Heiser’s scholarly difference on Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28 is far more persuasive and convincing. Moreover Heiser is not “cut off from” historical literature and archeological discovery. Therefore when he suggests that the reason some church fathers interpreted both chapters to refer to the fall of an angelic being is “because they were cut off” from modern scholarship, he is subtly suggesting that modern scholars who disagree with him may be as ignorant as the church fathers. When he does specifically mention Heiser’s views he oddly enough says Hesier tries to interpret both chapters in the light of ANE religious culture, BUT he interprets them in light of the background of the Old Testament. However his explanation on Isaiah 14 relies ENTIRELY on a Canaanite/Ugarit myth-not the Old Testament! Very perplexing to charge Heiser with an overemphasis extra-biblical date that he then picks up wholesale to undercut Heiser’s view on Isaiah 14. He then goes on to say that Heiser doesn’t believe Adam is in view in Ezekiel 28 “because Heiser doesn’t think Adam can be called a cherub” (as in one of the cherubim). And yet shortly after when he describes the nature of a cherub he concedes they are ANGELIC BEINGS! (Yep- and this is exactly why Heiser says Adam can’t be the cherub of Ezekiel 28!)

Some consecrated thinking I have journeyed through... Speaking to the King of Tyre in Ezekiel 28 does describes Satan... Read it: Ezekiel 28:14-19 (NASB) "You were the anointed cherub who covers, And I placed you there. You were on the holy mountain of God; You walked in the midst of the stones of fire. "You were blameless in your ways From the day you were created Until unrighteousness was found in you. "By the abundance of your trade You were internally filled with violence, And you sinned; Therefore I have cast you as profane From the mountain of God. And I have destroyed you, O covering cherub, From the midst of the stones of fire.."Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; You corrupted your wisdom by reason of your splendor. I cast you to the ground; I put you before kings, That they may see you. "By the multitude of your iniquities, In the unrighteousness of your trade You profaned your sanctuaries. Therefore I have brought fire from the midst of you; It has consumed you, And I have turned you to ashes on the earth In the eyes of all who see you. "All who know you among the peoples Are appalled at you; You have become terrified And you will cease to be forever."’" Was a guard “cherob” on the Mount of God magnifying His glory... but it wasn’t good enough for him, he wanted to be like God, he sinned and was cast to the ground, aka earth, he wanted in all ways to be like God but unfortunately that is and proves to impossible for him. Look at the similarities we face, it’s eerily similar as unrepentant sinful non-believers. Earth is satan’s prison, God created a handful of dust to do what God created Satan to and our reward for living for Christ as a repentant believer is the very thing Satan was covered in. Our warning is when we think we can take Satan on he will crush us by the sovereign will of the Father. In the end all our rewards goes through fire... When gold, precious stones and Jewels goes through fire it is purified to magnify brighter. When wood hay and stubble goes through fire it is consumed and no longer exists. If I see you on the streets of glory and all I see is you I haven’t seen much but if you are covered in gold, silver and previous stones... “greater is He that is in me.” I see the Glory of God reflecting off you. My simple Holy Spirit directed consecrated “non-formal” educated mind with interlinear tools. I don’t know about you, if someone replaced me that was made out of the lowest forms of materials under foot, I’d probably be upset to! Jesus is LORD! “His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie...” (1 John 2:27, NASB) I pray this encourages someone!!!

Satan is nowhere described in the bible as a cherub. Cherubim have the appearance like either a man, a bull, a lion, or eagle. Some have changing appearances of all four. Satan has reptilian characteristics, whether he is described as a serpent (Hebrew nachach) or as a dragon (Hebrew tanniyn and Greek drakon). No other created being in Scripture has such reptilian features and attributes, with the possible exception of seraphim, as some scholars have noted (see Numbers 21:8-9 and Isaiah 14:29). Seraphs are distinct beings from cherubs.

There are many that intelligent enough to predict the disastrous results of their choices, yet choose the disaster anyway. Satan is depicted as being full of pride. And his hubris will never let him admit his error and ask for forgiveness. He believes God has unjustly deprived him of what he deserves. And like many of the intelligent, he believes his value is increased by his intelligence and he cannot be wrong. Hmm. I just realize that I described a large number of atheists. Anyway, all this does not contradict what Jesus said about his evil. He WAS evil from the beginning; he was created with the character flaw of overweening pride.

All of Satan's names are not revealed until the latter chapters of Revelation. Lucifer in Isa:14 would be Satan as described in Re:20:1-3, a prisoner in chains. The people being punished in Isa:65, after being killed by a sword, are the same people the sword in the last verse of Re:19 kills. The place they are in is like a big bird cage with a locked door. People sent to hell are on the inside, on the other side are the fallen angels that sinned in Ge:6, and Satan, in chains. Satan would be mocked by the other fallen angels, as most men watched on in stunned silence, following him means all of them will end up going to the same fiery lake people are warned about in Re:21 as they begin a life that will see them become as wise about the Kingdom of God as any angel in their perfected heaven.

Too much overthinking can make us sometimes miss the obvious. Some things are not that complicated that it takes so much pagan historical, metaphoric, allegorical, mythical, mythological and figurative Interpretations to see what God is saying in Isaiah 14, Ezekiel 28, Revelation 12 so clearly how Satan fell. Even though the authors are using different kings names and regions, we must take in account the revelation of the Holy Spirit in leading Jerome's Latin translation with identifying Lucifer directly, and also moving upon upon the early church fathers in bringing certain scriptures to light. We have to come to place of better balancing God's word not heavily from the historical, metaphoric, allegorical, mythical, mythological and figurative, but also allowing the Holy Spirit to tell us what it means.

And that we have no Indication of what actually happened to Satan, even though Jesus says He saw Satan fall like lighting from heaven, just as is described here by the prophets that Lucifer (Satan) was cast down to the earth. Elsewhere in Corinthians, Paul says Satan is said to disguise himself still as an angel of light -- IE: same translation as Lucifer that he described. His whole argumentation falls flat.

As @Nikronius mentioned, it is immediately preceded by 72 apostles telling Jesus that they're able to conquer even demons in his name. It is refreshing to find the treatment of Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28 explained in prophetical exegesis relating to the time and circumstances of Tyre and Babylon (circa 700 BC) and not used to explain a subject of beginnings spoken of in Genesis. In Genesis the cherubim were described as keeping the way to the Tree of Life but the falsehood introduced in Genesis 3 is not ascribed to an angel or a cherub. The tempter is described as the most crafty of all the beasts of the field that the Lord God had made. I question, therefore, whether the serpent could have been the one that fell, but rather Adam and his wife. They had been created by God in His own image. Of course, Jesus also spoke in similar language of Tyre and Sidon being likened to Chorazin and Bethsaida in his time. "Will you be exalted to Heaven? You will be brought down to Hades." These again were cities but there is no angelic being cited. Where does the idea of a fallen angel come from? If the penalty for sin was "dying you shall die", could a fallen angel be excluded from this divine principle?
@dxpdigital53432 жыл бұрын
When he referred to Ezekiel he skips the part where The Lord directly refers to the subject as a “cherub” and mentions how he walked amongst the “fiery stones” in reference to calling the cherub a type of the Seraphim. But I'll be honest, I've still always had a soft spot for Adam because he was given perfection without having to "learn obedience through suffering unto death" and for me obedience has always been learned the hard way (discipline and chastisement) at least in the beginning!!

Those scriptures may have been originally written in Hebrew but at the end of the day. "All scripture is given by inspiration of God". It is the Holy Spirit that was communicating through Isaiah and I highly doubt that the Holy Spirit would plagiarize stories from an extremely evil belief system as that of the Canaanites to communicate God's message in Isaiah 14. I think your interpretation is mistaken because you have tried to use non-biblical stories to interpret Biblical stories. Let the Scripture interpret itself. If we can't make out what a text is talking about, it's better to just say we don't know rather than speculate.
@ribbbsy5 жыл бұрын
Using existing literature as a polemic is not plagiarizing and for sure happens elsewhere in the Bible. The most obvious examples may be where Paul quotes pagan authors to make a point. Christ does the same thing, but he is very specific when he says, "you've heard it said... but I say..." It certainly happens in the Old Testament.. usage of Egyptian symbology to show God's power over the Egyptians being an fairly obvious example. I think your interpretation is mistaken because you want the Bible to be held to the logical and literary standards of our current time, rather that needing to be concerned with how literature was written in it's original context.
@honkytonkinson97875 жыл бұрын
Those non biblical stories would have been well known by the author and his intended audience. How can you understand the intention of the author if you don't understand the perspective of the audience? Why tell people now not to view the story from a certain perspective? Don't limit yourself this way or you may stumble. If you're afraid of what you, or what someone else, might learn, then pray about it. I tend to agree that Old Testament prophets were writing to Hebrews who had almost abandoned God in favor of the popular paganism, because it was easier for them, so why wouldn't those books cite pagan stories? We do the same now, comparing bible stories to contemporary and secular ideas. Just an opinion. Love ya!

JOB 1:6 One day, when the son's of God came to present themselves before the LORD, Satan also came among them. And the Lord said to Satan, "Whence do you come?" Then Satan answered the Lord and said, "From roaming the earth and patrolling it." I Was told, the Devil does not do evil, people do evil. The devil can't make anyone do anything, he can only provide a temptation to do evil. If a person takes the bate, and does evil by one's own will to do so, then the Devil can judge that person accordingly. Punishment comes when the Devil comes for them after death. On that day Every knee will bend Every tongue confess Jesus Christ is Lord The devil is not a practitioner of evil. He is a judge of people who are a practitioner evil. When a person says, "The Devil made me do it!" as an excuse or doing something wrong, they can only be lying. And by that, compounding their sins with that lie. See, the Devil is said to be a servant of God. But he holds the sin of pride. Pride enough to question God's judgement of giving humanity both a soul and free will. Stating that humanity is not worthy of such gifts. God has in turn, given the Devil the task of finding those that may misuse the gifts God has given. And the freedom to punish them after. Nobody likes to be judged for any wrong doings. Humanity is imperfect, and easy to sway via our emotions. So humanity see the Devil as evil, due to being the enemy of those who do bad things. - All, or even none of this could be true. - But if it is true, and calling out the Devil as a scapegoat for the many Evils man makes, we may never truly get to the root of the problem, and in turn, never be able to fix it. Can we keep getting away with blaming the Devil for the many wrongs made by humanity? Will humans never own up to our own potential for doing evil via the free will to do so? Will we continue to learn nothing about the truth of human nature? The good and the bad sides of it? - To me, we are our own worst nightmare. Perhaps, someday, we may wake up and be enlightened to what we are doing to ourselves, and perhaps find a way to grow up as a people, and stop blaming dark shadows for what we do, and instead do better. Is that not what having free will is about? For you love all things that are and loathe nothing that you have made; for what you hated, you would not have fashioned.. and how could a thing remain, unless you willed it; or be preserved, had it not been called forth by you? But you spare all things, because they are yours, O Lord and lover of souls, For your imperishable spirit is in all things! Therefore you rebuke offenders little by little, warn them, and remind them of the sins they are committing, that they may abandon their wickedness and believe in you, O LORD! He tests the good and the bad, He hates those who love violence For He loves the just and just deeds; the upright shall see his face. When God, in the beginning, created man, he made him subject to his own free choice. If you choose you can keep the commandment; it is loyalty to do his will. There is set before you fire and water; to whichever you choose, stretch forth your hand. Before man are life and death, whichever he chooses shall be given him. Immense is the wisdom of the LORD; he is mighty in power and all-seeing. The eyes of God see all he has made; he understands man's every deed. No man does he command to sin, to none does he give strength for lies.. Court not death by your erring way of life, nor draw to yourselves destruction by the works of your hands. Because God did not make death. Nor does he rejoice in the destruction of the living. For he fashioned all things that they might have being: and the creatures of the world are wholesome, And there is not a destructive drug among them nor any domain of the nether world on the earth, For justice is undying. It was the wicked who with hands and words invited death, considered it a friend, and pined for it, and made a covenant with it, Because they deserve to be in its possession, they who said among themselves, thinking not aright: Brief and troublous is our lifetime; neither is there any remedy for man's dying, nor is anyone known to have come back from the neither world. For haphazard were we born, and hereafter we shall be as though we had not been; Because the breath in our nostrils is a smoke and reason is a spark at the beating of our hearts, And when this is quenched, our body will be ashes and our spirit will be poured abroad like unresisting air, Even our name will be forgotten in time, and no one will recall our deeds. So our life will pass away like the traces of a cloud, and will be dispersed like a mist pursued by the sun's rays and overpowered by its heat. For our lifetime is the passing of a shadow: and our dying cannot be deferred because it is fixed with a seal; and no one returns. Come, therefore, let us enjoy the good things that are real, and use the freshness of creation avidly. Let us have our fill of costly wine and perfumes, and let no springtime blossom pass us by; let us crown ourselves with rosebuds ere they wither. Let no meadow be free from our wantonness, everywhere let us leave tokens of our rejoicing, for this our portion is, and this our lot. Let us oppress the needy just man; let us neither spare the widow nor revere the old man for his hair grown white with time. But let our strength be our norm of justice; for weakness proves itself useless. .................. Jesus O Savior I know not if you are real Come Come live in me .. Save me Amen and Amen Revelations 22:17 The Spirit and the bride say. "Come." Let the hearer say, "Come." Let the one who thirsts come forward, and the one who wants receive the gift

Just kind of stumbled across this and really appreciate it. As much and as often as I've read the Ezekiel temple passages, it had never occurred to me that no height is mentioned. That, and the river as you explain here, make much more sense with that in mind, that it's an allegory of future worship. Can you give any links or sources that would help flesh out the rest of the meaning of the temple? Also, I appreciate your humility. I am a big fan of Dr. Heiser and think he has done the body of Christ a great service in trying to get us to think more like the people to which the Bible was written and to reach out beyond whatever "systems" we have grown up in and around. But...none of us is perfect or has all the knowledge of the truth. Perhaps some of the more obscure and challenging passages were placed there to keep us humble. We've all seen cults arise just because some mortal has claimed to have all the answers. Thank you for this message! God bless!

Great synopsis. One of the most frustrating things about the other side of the argument (proponents of the Lucifer-became-Satan theory) is that it misinterprets Revelation 12 (which chronologically does not align with their own arguments) and thus misses something very important, which is praiseworthy towards God. In Revelation 12, after Christ's ascension, the role of Satan as accuser before the throne of God (as in Job 1) is changed. We are basically liberated by Christ's ascension and through his grace, that Satan's accusations against us for all our sin are meritless. Thus, the role of Satan (as tempter and sower of the antichrist spirit among other things) changes drastically and the church could take it as a pragmatic warning for how to prepare for the new waves of attacks that Satan will use against "the woman". It is tragically unfortunate that what is a beautiful and helpful passage is taken out of context by people repeating rhetoric to defend a theory arrogantly presented as orthodoxy. The "angels that sinned" mentioned in 2 Peter and Jude seem to be referring to Genesis 6 events rather than the "Luciferian rebellion" [theory], which really has no solid foundation for doctrine within the standard Christian canon.

The creation of humans really did not sit well for some angels, as they were made in the image of God, not by spirit but by flesh and blood. Some felt that humans should worship them too. Call it Angel supremacy. Satan saw the opportunity to deceive humans. He wanted to challenge God and start a rebellion as a way to prove that he was right. God let him, to prove that he was wrong, just like how he allowed Satan to torment Job, same situation. So the Atheist out there, you're faith is being tested and God purposely hides himself to examine your faith. Samething as when you have a test, the teacher isn't going to give you answers on the test, you must prove yourselves.

Dr. Gentry, greetings from Western Canada. Well done! You have articulated your thoughts extremely well. You have demonstrated with great humility and passion your understanding of how Holy Scripture can be interpreted with an alternate view point. Most Christians believe that the devil was once a mighty angel who always stood in God's presence until he rebelled, and thus was thrown out of heaven taking a third of the angels with him. But is this a true statement? Jesus said in John 8:44; “For you are the children of your father the Devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning and has always hated the truth. There is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.” Nowhere in the “Word” do we find where the devil ever said that he would be like the Most High. What the devil said, when God let him test Adam was, "You can be like the Most High, if you will eat of this fruit." I believe that the idea Satan tried to be like the Most High came from tradition. He was a created devil, and he knows he could never be like God. Let our discussions continue as we reason one with another! Lamplighter 2020 out.

He was close with referring to it as “parody” and yet so far: the parody is the fall of Satan and the fall of human sovereigns: the interaction between the human sovereign and the spiritual power behind it-such as the prince of Tyrus vs. the king of Tyrus (a distinction that he ignored, by the way) which is not just about different positions of authority since one of these is a Cherub and was in Eden-which he works really hard to dance around. Also, “stones of fire” likely comes from Ezekiel’s description of what/whom? Cherubim, “their appearance was like burning coals of fire….fill thine hand with coals of fire from between the cherubims” (chaps 1 and 10). And, he wrongly claim that as per the NT Satan is an Angel but that is simply not the case rather, he pretends to be/disguises himself as/masquerades as an Angel of light. And that final judgment is reserved for “the Devil and his Angels” does not mean that he is being categorized as an Angel. Correct: Cherubim were posted at the Garden so it was one (fallen) Cherub vs. two (loyal) ones. However, there is no indication that Adam became violent, prideful, was full of his own handsomeness, stated the five I-wills, etc., etc., etc. In my book “What Does the Bible Say About the Devil Satan? A Styled Satanology” I wrote a chapter titled “The Apocalypse of the Hidden Hand” wherein I show that Ezekiel 28, Ezekiel 31, and Isaiah 14 are playing upon the same event and share much terminology in common. www.truefreethinker.com/articles/new-book-%E2%80%9Cwhat-does-bible-say-about-devil-satan-styled-satanology%E2%80%9D

We ourselves are responsible for Satan's exile from the heavens. We subdue the principalities and powers of the air and place them under the feet of Jesus. The earth is His footstool. The places that Lucifer and his rebellious angels occupied in the heavens are our inheritance. We take over what he forfeited though his rebellion. We give the glory to God whereas he wanted it for himself. It's just like when Israel entered Canaan, there were seven nations greater and mightier than them who dwelled in the land.
