Is the Ferrari F40 the Greatest Ferrari EVER? | REVIEW

Is the Ferrari F40 the best car to ever come out of the gates in Maranello? To find out, I travel to Perego Cars in Switzerland to experience the F40 in full on some wonderful roads. The car is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year since being introduced in 1987 and for the drive I'm joined by Greg from Perego, following our previous outing in the Lamborghini Miura S. This time around, it's all F40, let's find out what it's about!
The Ferrari F40 is hugely iconic in its design and powered by a 500hp 2.9l turbocharged V8. Interaction with the car comes from the 5-speed dog-leg manual gearbox and it's certainly quite something to experience. With values into 7 figures, this 1991 example is driven and used hence now having 26,000km on the clock!
Although I am lucky enough to have driven an F40 before, I've never been able to give it the full attention it deserves and show you all around it in detail. A huge thanks goes to Perego Cars, to Greg and John, for making this opportunity possible. Please give them a follow at: / peregocars

12 cylinder Ferrari, definitely, you got a point engine-wise. But in my opinion, as far as the overall driving experience is concern, nothing is close to the F40. Think about that car coming out in 1987... it's still relevant today, so imagine back then.. it was so fast, so precise, so brutal that Ferrari didn't want the journalists to compare the F50 side by side to the F40 on the circuit because the F40 was faster. How did they come up with such a beast is pure magic. I guess that was the last touch of a genius... Enzo.

This is by far...my favorite Ferrari of ALL time. I absolutely love this car. In my mind this isn’t a “hypercar” or “supercar”.....it’s a straight up “race car”.

When I was a little girl I had the classic poster of an F40 in my bedroom. I grew up around cars, and particularly, Ferrari automobiles from the 80s and 90s, my father eventually owned a California (which he recently sold). I've been in quite a few, but still to me the ultimate is the F40. I still haven't even seen one in person despite a stint as a journalist and motorsport photographer. I quite imagine the experience to be downright religious. So glad that you could share this experience with us. Cheers from the US.

I love the F40! I am plotting to build an F40 myself from scratch in the future. The frame is a fairly simple tubular design. A good frame builder could create it pretty easily. I'd get a wrecked F430 to use its engine and other various systems. Basically swap all of the working bits into the F40 frame. The F430 has a good mix of analog control with some computer tech which would make a perfect combo for the F40 kit. Someone has molds of the body panels and sells them for $60,000. In all it would cost over $150,000 but you would have an amazing car. It would be sort of like a Shelby Cobra kit car. The Cobras are great, but you could easily build a much better driving Cobra from a kit car and wouldn't have to worry about smashing a car that should be in a museum.

It's amazing how different the F40 and Porsche 959 are yet they were designed and built around the same time. Porsche and Ferrari both aimed at the same goal but got there in two completely different ways. The F40 was just raw, stripped down no frills performance and the 959 was a technological wonder.

Ryan Lange the 959 was actually porsches equivelent of the 288 gto . Both were road going homologations for group b . The 959 was faster and more powerful than gto and when group b was banned ferrari turned the gto evoluzione racecar into a road car primarily to beat porsche which it did . Just. When they were going to name there new racecar for the road they decided on f40 as it was there 40th anniversary. I love the f40 but i still prefer the 288 gto and the f50

When F40 came out, it was al I could ever dream of. I made my own collages, school agenda, went to the shows in Essen and Paris. I was 13. Now I am 42 and last month I went to a show just to see the F40 amongst many other great cars. But I still dream of the F40. F40 equals Ferrari.

Caught myself driving along side one on the 405 in Southern California in the early 90s. It was the hottest supercar out at that time. I remember thinking how small it was. It seemed tiny. Simply awesome!

Tim, I'm so glad that you've been able to jump in an astonishing F40! Obviously, it's not every day you get the chance to drive an F40 around beautiful sceneries and pushing it a little bit, instead of getting it around the town at low speed!! The upside of this car, as you said before is that it's not cumbersome and not like many nowadays supercars you can't simply mash the throttle due to the fact that it's a supercar without compromise, If I had the possibility to drive one, even though for a few metres, I'd be terrorized due to the idea that it costs over 1 million pounds!! Good job as always!!

What a magical experience. For me personally I have a real soft spot for the Testarossa. That same squareness like the F40 has got. I really like the comb flutes up the sides of the Testarossa. These cars remind me of the movie Cannonball Run. Thanks for sharing.

F355 Berlinetta Spyder F1, SLR, Lamborghini Diablo, Murcielago, SV. Roadster, LFA. The F40 will always be the super car king of its time when no fancy gadgetry and gizmos doing the talking. Just that pure raw turbo-charged v8 with the 5 speed gated manual transmission doing the talking. Talk of the town during its time. Even have the scale model of it in red and had the chance to see it in person at the ferrari dealer in Boston 3 or 4 years back alongside the 288 gto, f50, f50 spyder and Enzo. Raw driving experience.

Tim, as time is going on - I am starting to appreciate the F50 over the F40. Time has been very kind to the shape of the F50. I was in Beaconsfield 3 weeks ago and was fortunate to get a glimpse of a F50 howling away as it pealed off the road I was driving on from the other direction - needless to say windows went straight down to listen to it fly away! F40 is great too! Interesting how it took Ferrari more time to get Turbos in to series production rather than specials given the success of the F40!

When I was in japan I had the opportunity to go to Light Auto in Nagoya Japan. The show room was set up the same way as this one here. It was beautiful but i felt that with all those amazing rare cars it seem to take away the specialness of each car. Don't get me wrong it was amazing to see all of those cars in one location. It really felt like some overpowered others and took away the special feeling you get when seeing them one at a time.

When you see how small those beautiful old Porsche's, Ferrari's and Mercedes are, you really do realise how over-inflated and chunky the modern equivalents are. Obviously a lot of it is safety features but they don't feel like 'machines' any more, they're too electronic and soft. The F40 is all about as little interference as possible between the driver, the engine and the tarmac... and I love that! You're a lucky chap.

The F40 shows what a supercar should be, it is the king as its not an easy car to live day to day but who wants that. Hope manufacturers focus on that in future, we dont want to drive a civic we want the total experience from low to extreme speeds
