This guy is full of it. The CVT system is absolutely unreliable. I’ve been in contact with Ford about this issue for a year. When these start failing, and they will, their answer for broken belts is a complete replacement of the whole unit. Cost estimated at $7000. You’ll never save enough gas to ever recover the cost of this repair.

@@hongshi8251 I would avoid a CVT like the plague. But an e-CVT is not the same as a CVT. The ONLY similarity is the name. Mechanically they are completely different. An e-CVT is probably the most reliable hybrid transmissions available. It is certainly my first choice.

Yep. They’re both continuously-variable gears, hence CVT, but they work entirely differently. These e-CVT’s are far more reliable, not using belts, and they also feel much smoother.

Yes add plug in with 60-70 mile range on battery alone. This will cover 3-4 of my local trips a week. The onboard charger can be scaled back to charge on a 110/20amp or 240/20amp and not need dc charging. Should reduce cost and improve reliability… sensible for most local needs…

I think plug in hybrids are total npc mobiles. Dont make sense. Just regular hybrid man. Gas motor reliant, electric assisted. The bigger yiu make the battery the worse it gets. You want a reasomably sized smaller battery thats a really really good one but it still easy to replace. Thay way when you inevitably have to, its not as expensive. But thisnis a throwaway trucck man. Why out a new battery in a truck with 300k miles and needs other work too. Uts built to be recycled

In theory, you’re right on all points. In practice, there are so many other things that can go wrong with a car even with reliable components (wiring harnesses for example) which is why people become brand loyal to companies like Toyota or Honda. I’ve got a hybrid Maverick coming this month and I’m hoping for the best, but I’m thinking it will be a bumpy start for the first year or two

If the factory is the one in Northern Mexico City (It is on Google Maps) that is the same one that built my Mach E (will have it in days). My 2010 Fusion Hybrid was built in a joint Mazda factory (considering it is a modified Mazda 6) further south in Mexico: 1840K with no engine or CVT issues, One brake job, 2 water pumps (103K and preventative at 174K: thermostat replacement and since they are together they did it too), rear struts, rear control arm and front bearings, the last three between 178-184K.

The ford PTU isnt a problem itself. What makes it a problem is its low fluid capacity and placement (next to hot exhuast components), which makes them a very maintenance sensitive component. They can last a long time without issue if you change the fluid every 25-30k miles. The problem is, ford doesnt even list it as a maintenance item in owners manuals and most people never even know to change the fluid before they fail from lubrication degradation.

Sorry I’m not buying your naive reasoning . Toyota did not partner with Ford on the hybrid system. Next, the CVT system is absolutely unproven. Once your warranty is finished, your Chances of making 100,000 miles is absolutely unknown. This is a snowmobile design. If the belt breaks it will be a catastrophic issue since it may destroy the whole system. Estimated cost is over $8000 . You’ll never save that much on gasoline compared with an eco boost. Now with the high failure rate of the eco boost, the whole powertrain is a question mark. Avoid the Maverick for at least another couple years and let others have the problems before even considering it.

@@aca2983 The dealer locally said he has sold very few Ford CTV's and nearly all had to be replaced. So far he sold 15 Mavericks and has not reported any failures yet. I'd love to have a Maverick with a super simple setup. no Turbo, no extra batteries etc but they just don't make them that way. I guess overall I'm just attracted to the price but.... if they announce a $3000 increase, I probably won't buy it. Thanks for the information. I didn't see any Fords in NYC/ A lot of Toyotas.

Bought ours today, keeping it for decades, likely won't experience issues.

They use planetary gears in locomotives. That setup will last way longer than whatever obsolete pile you're driving.

Driving my second hybrid vehicle. Waiting on my 2022 Maverick, which will be my third. Love them. Not one problem with my former ones.
