When I saw poudre forte listed as an ingredient, I knew this was legit. It’s so cool to finally see a fantasy cookbook that’s actually based on medieval recipes! Bread was commonly used to thicken sauces, and since sugar was considered a spice, it was often used in savoury dishes, so a lot of medieval food has a really interesting bbq/sweet-and-sour contrast
@MisoHungrie2 жыл бұрын
Never heard about it until I did that recipe so I'm glad to be able to learn something new. Good stuff!

I simply adore Medieval times. Their society is rife with underappreciated humor. How on Earth was sugar mistaken as a spice!? 🤣 If by some stretch of suspicion that was the case, it must've been some backwards tasting food lol. I would even suppose underdeveloped communities such as these could achieve the bare minimum by distinguishing what's spicy, sour or sweet depending on taste. I mean you don't require much effort to differentiate a candy bar from a pepper. That's pure comedy.
@SoapCkat2 жыл бұрын
@@RomComs4Ever they used fruits and honey for the sugar and they used it as a seasoning they didn't mistake it as a spice they just used ut with spices and seasonings

That's a lot of meat for a recipe for cheap stew. The channel Tasting History with Max Miller has at least one episode that features poudre forte. Love your new intros, you aced the green screen this time xD As for the recipes, you've got the right move, if you feel something is wrong, then something is definitely wrong, sometimes people stick to the recipe but when recipes never say things like "if your dough is too sticky, add extra flour", yet, I almost always had to do this with success. Hi to "Miso wifey" too by the way xD. Last thing : overbaked bread is not really healthy, I am surprised they came out with this idea, there are a lot of brown and black bread available.

Thank you for the Video :) 2 Questions tho: 1. Would you make a cook book tierlist of 2022 by the end of the year? I think it would be cool seeing them all ranked up :D 2. Do you recomment this book for vegetarians? I've seen many meaty dishes (which makes sense, its game of thrones....not game of carrots). The thing is, this seems like a great gift to my best friend. But his girlfriend and him are both vegetarians. Have a nice day :)
@maskedmonster2 жыл бұрын
cook book tierlist of 2022, def a great idea. Hope Miso will look at it :D
@Patricia-kl8yw2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if I'd recommend it for vegetarians. If they eat eggs and fish then there are a few more recipes that would work. Breakfast on the wall can be done without the meat or just replace it with cheese. But it seems that most recipes that are vegetarian are not really meant as main-courses. As vegetarian "mains" you have: Pea mash (both modern and medieval), Onions in gravy, buttered red and white beets, beets in butter (there are 3 variants of it), soup of leek (modern & medieval), Sister stew (but it has fish), broth of algae and mussles (again: Shellfish this time), Mushroom-soup, Pumpkin-Soup, carrots in butter, Fishpasties (Fish), Cheese-Onion-Pie, Dornish breakfast (a kind of scrambled eggs), Humus, filled vine leaves and beetsoup. Added to this are quite a few recipes of sweets, tartlests, cakes and also breads and hearty cookies. Also there are some salats. In my personal view, unless you go for a soup, its hart to make a full vegetarian meal out from the recipes alone. Because I feel that most "fulll courses" revolve arround some kind of meat-component. There are also not great options to replace the meat with something else. If they're a fan of medieval deserts and cakes, than it might be worth thinking about it, because there are quife a few recipes of bakebles. But I haven't tried those. Edit: I have to say that I own the German version, so some names might differ, based on my skill of retranslation backwards to english.

I've had this book for years now and it's spectacular. I highly recommend trying pretty much any of the savoury pies, but my favorite is the medieval version of the pork pie. Also the honeyfingers ARE tricky to handle. I've found that sticking the dough in the freezer for a few minutes after shaping it into a square but before cutting it helps a lot. And using plenty of extra flour when kneading/shaping it, too.
