Hi Gary. They modeled the Genesis Switch Online controller design after the original version of the Genesis 3-button which had highlighted lettering in the buttons. The OEM Genesis 3-button you have and show off in the video was the second version where they changed the lettering to just black and added the light printing directly above each button for added clarity while moving the trigger word below. Not sure of you're aware of that detail or not but just wanted to point that out. I enjoy your channel and its content btw. Keep up the good work.

Just that they looked similar in the short video and in this one you mention yours is one of the older ones with the grey markings versus the orange with the Switch Online version. It just wasn't said specifically that they took the design of the very first 3-button version. That's all. Just a nerdy little detail that's not important but an interesting thing to note which you said you were already aware of.

Oddly enough, the 3-Button 'Mini/Classic' Genesis controller has a slightly recessed D-pad. It's a little too low unfortunately and feels worse than it could have, but it does feel much nicer to the touch than the original 1989's stiff ridged D-pad, and the 2nd 1991 all-black variant's. Can't speak for the OEM 3rd variant 1993 3-button pad, yet i hear it's d-pad is simular to the 6-button controller? As is, the original red accented 89 Genesis 3 button, IMO, is easily the best most iconic and fun looking genesis controller period. 6-button(Retro-Bit) overall is the best because of it's D-pad and smaller snappier A, B & C buttons, but i can't stand how bland it looks. Meanwhile, the Big6's Start button feels awful to the touch thanks to it's weird concave design, and it's placement is terrible. If they threw it in the middle of the controller, made it convex, along with the D-pad working just as accurately as the 6-buttons, it would of been THE best batarang styled GEN controller no question, since it's boasting the 6-buttons D-pad and smaller snappier A,B&C Buttons. So close, but no cigar. Back to the 6-button! :P

I think, i'm the only person in the world that is so happy, that it is the the 3 button controller and not the 6 button once. 6 buttons feels so wrong for me, original mega drive gen. 1 owner. ^^

Gary, I updated my 8bitDo wireless receiver for Genesis today to see if the Genesis Switch controllers will finally pair up to it, and it did! I am now using the 3 button and 6 button MD controllers on original hardware. Thought you, or anyone else might like to know.

Good to know, I don't use 8BitDo myself due to their terrible communication, but good for others.

@@RoXolid That kind of stuff may have been resolved if you have one, but never updated the firmware. I know it was initially an issue. It was as easy as pressing the pair button on the 8bitdo receiver, and pair on the sega/nintendo controller (that's STILL weird lol). They found each other right away. I was gaming on the Genesis for about an hour or so, and nothing dropped out, and no lag that I can tell.

@@VirajKathwadia yes both Genesis and Megadrive 6 button controller work on actual hardware. You just have to make sure you have the latest firmware on the wireless receiver. Then hold pair on both controller and receiver.

Absolutely love the Genesis and I think the NSO controller is an overpriced Nostalgia grab, considering that it is not a fully functional controller outside of the NSO Genesis games and when we already have awesome 6 button Genesis Retro-bit controllers that work on the Switch. I have been tempted to get this NSO controller a few time; before I remember that I already have great options that I already bought (and the fact that once again; US gets the 3 button variant and not the 6). Also, Retrobit is making a new Sega Controller that combines the big 3 button design with 6 buttons.

Also, will you do a review of the Ultimate 8bido controller for Switch and other devices; coming Oct 28? It is a bluetooth controller and has a 2.4 ghz dongle for no input delay.

@@enriquepinero707 No, I do not review 8bitDo Products unless they are the only option on the market. They have terrible customer service and do not respond to questions and inquiries from Social or email. As such, since they don't support the community I don't support them

I absolutely LOVE the retrobit controllers. I have a wireless 6 button for my Genesis mini that I also use for my Genesis/32x and a wireless Saturn controller. Retro bit did a hell of a job with those controllers.

I'd say no. Just get either the Retro-Bit ones made for the Switch or the 8BitDo M30; the latter you have to use the Change Button Mapping...

Way overpriced. You’re better off buying one of the officially licensed retro bit 2.4 g/Bluetooth sega genesis controllers and using that. Cheaper too.

@Bal Del But the fact is that 8bitdo doesn't care about the community, never responds to messages, emails, questions, or concerns, and are pretty much just out there to make a quick buck. Unless there are no other options I will never use 8bitdo

It’s not even compatible with the Sega Genesis classics collection. Absolute rip off. I just got mine and am regretting the purchase. They didn’t even bother to map it to make it work with Sega games, only in the nso expansion. Trash 🗑️ purchase, would have been better off getting the 2 NES controllers

Is it me or does every gaming historian think Sega is just a big nostalgia grab? What about Nintendo? Didn't they re-release so many remakes of older games recently? Weren't they the ONES WHO PUBLISHED THAT CONTROLLER? AND ALL THE OTHERS? 👀

I'm not saying Sega is a big nostalga grab, but this controller is for what it delivers. Looking at what Retro-bit offers for less money with the same or better performance this is definitely overpriced for what it is. And I agree that the blame lies at Nintendo's feet on this, not Sega.

Personally I think it's way overprice in my opinion plus there's much better alternative plus the six button control is superior and way better than the three controller in and most Sega Genesis games requires it I mean to play Comix Zone you need the six button controllers because on the three button controller requires to press start and the button to activate the items which is kind of a unnatural feeling to me sure you can get used to it but I'd rather use a six button control in my opinion so yeah. To me it's a hard pass and I rather buy the Retrobit the six button control and good it to go. There's no need to buy a three button control at this point other than as a collectible item.

I do love the idea of emulation on the Switch. But who really wants to pay for a monthly pricey subscription over just buying a Sega Genesis Mini or a SNES Mini and call it a day? It's kind of a waste of money if you keep buying the subscription yearly. Casual folks will eat this up though.

For street fighter you hit start and it switches between punch and kick. at least that is how it worked on the genesis. I think all these controllers were just to costly and not worth it.

All licensed controllers are over priced. You can get a cheap universal controller that works just as well for 1/3 of the price. But for the retro Genesis games I can see wanting a controller that has all the right buttons in the right place so you get that authentic genesis feel.

4:26 Say what now?😂🥰 The 6 button controller is so tiny you have to pinch it to crab on to it😇 The 3 button is the greatest controller in my opinion. Just place your palm on the controller and it hugs is all they way and your right thumb aligns perfectly over the B and Start buttons and your left thumb is naturally right over the d-pad. It’s just as snug on the palm as a modern Xbox Series controller. The 3 button controller has the best ergonomics of that generation and it’s the only controller with larger face buttons which makes it really fun to use and really unique because it’s one of a kind, and they are just the right size for a thumb, and they are also the closest thing to arcade buttons on a controller because of the horizontal ABC layout. Name a better looking controller than the MD 3B? For a controller that came out in 1988 it’s shockingly perfect in every way. And like 95% of Genesis games are 3 button games. It’s such a popular opinion that the 6 button one is better because it’s got more buttons. I think the 6 button controller was created as a money saving method because it’s so much less detailed and not as nicely finished as the 3B version and there’s like 2x less material. They didn’t even bother giving the 6B d-pad the same finish as the 3B. From the original models it just needs to be the revised d-pad version that has a 6 button / Saturn style d-pad structure underneath. To me it’s a work of art how beautiful, comfortable, highly detailed, focused and functional it is. I also love the 6 button version but it’s nothing in comparison.
