I’ve had a 5.3 AT4 for a little over a year and hands down the best truck I’ve ever owned. The interiors are more different than Tommy noted. The GMC has nicer finishing on the dash, accent stitching and inlays, and “AT4” stitched into the head rest. It also comes with heated (but not cooled) rear seats. My best friend has a Silverado RST that he put a Trailboss lift on and, although it’s definitely a nice truck, the finish on the AT4 is definitely noticeable. Also, as goofy as it seems at first, the multipro tailgate really comes in handy! Just make sure you don’t open the inner tailgate (the smaller upper portion) with a trailer hitch in (crunch!). A comparably equipped AT4 will only run you about $1500 to 2500 more, but is definitely worth it! I’D GO AT4 ALL DAY!

When I was looking at the AT4 and Trail Boss LT, both as equally equipped as possible including the 6.2, the GMC was about $6,000 more. I couldn't justify that much difference in expense for the same truck, so I went with the Chevy. For about $1,000 I was able to utilize GM parts and get what the Chevy was missing that I really wanted. Factory navigation was $650 through MVi and $200-$250 for wireless cell phone charging. As for the different color stitching, seats, and headrest embroidery; is just a pig with lipstick. The only thing I'm not doing that would've been nice is the carbon pro package, but that's only available in white and I wanted blue, and the multipro tailgate.

@@domin8ss Part of the price difference here is the Carbon Pro, Multi function tailgate with the Kicker Sound, all fairly pricey. Now consider that it comes standard with rear inner wheel well liners, an unlock button on each door, and some other little details, it isn't apples to apples comparison. I bought an Elevation with the X31 to get a low range in the Tcase. I don't want a Carbon Pro or Swiss Army tailgate. It was tough to find what I was wanting. I wanted a 10 way seat on the passenger side, puddle lights, 6.2. Had to go to the AT4 for the seat. I'm fine with it, but I may trade when it turns 2.

Diesel are fun and so much power is just a game changer and mpg is much better. Def fluid is a joke when people talk about cost. You toss in a 3 gallon container every 5 to 7k miles. For 15 bucks not that big of a factor. My hd dursmsx I can get 27 mpg and 750 miles a tank. Can't do that in a gasser.
@fewworddotrick
@fewworddotrick 3 жыл бұрын
@@dtlusk24 yep everyone talks about the cost of def. It amounts to less than a penny per mile cost. I spend $26 for 6k miles of driving. There are tons of discount programs with diesel fuel because of the trucking industry, so I can get diesel for the same price and sometimes cheaper than 87. Combine that with the mileage savings and return on investment of a diesel at trade in, and you save several thousands of dollars all while having more power and better driveability. The only time it is not worth it is to own a diesel plagued with constant problems. But I wouldn't own one non deleted past the warranty date. Too much liability.

Your not wrong with the maintenance but I'm a mechanic and def is not to bad. I've owned two diesels. The first was a vw and now I own a ram 1500. The main reason I bought them was fuel economy. With the ram and how I drive it I can get around 950ish constantly on a full tank. The highest I got was was 980 something and that was with the best diesel fuel I can find.

When you spec these out similarly (no carbon pro bed) you quickly realize they are the same price, even more the sierra comes standard with many features that when optioned in the trailboss actually make the trailboss more expensive. I just bought a 2021 AT4 for 64k canadian, the closest trailboss was missing learher, had no multipro tailgate, no spray bed liner, no cooled seats and was 2k less. Ide say you are getting a better deal with the AT4, oh, also I managed to get the 3.0L duramax in it, so this is an obvious choice…go get the AT4 if you can find it….in my humble opinion.

This one isn't equipped with it, but you can get better looking carbon pro wheel for the vehicle. Love these videos, but he missed many of options that differentiate the pick-ups. I had a base GMC Sierra WT. And take it from me, you should always get a truck with the steering wheel controls. Reaching through the spokes of the steering wheel to turn a micro-button to reset/change your gauges is a major pain. As for the red tow hooks, I liked that option so much that I had the hooks on my Silverado LTZ powder-coated red for $70. If you decide to do the same, you'll find that it's nearly impossible to remove the bolt on the driver's side without taking off your front end. I simply cut the bolt and bought a new one and reversed it. The cost for a new bolt from GM was $15.00. It was worth every penny.

I've owned and driven diesels for over 40 years. That said, unless one is towing or doing a lot of highway driving, today's DPF/DEF-equipped diesels are not a good choice for short trips or urban commutes--in that duty, they will have problems over time. The 3.0 Duramax would be a good engine were it not for the belt-driven oil pump--that's a "cheap-out" design that will cost the owner a chunk when it has to be replaced at 150K miles. So, for most people, the Chevy Trail Boss will be the better buy. It's likely that GM doesn't offer the 3.0 diesel in the Chevy Trail Boss because it would pirate sales away from the GMC AT4. GM has to walk a tightrope to protect its GMC dealers because a number of them are not Chevy/GMC combination franchises. That, as much anything, is why there even are two GM divisions still building trucks. One note about the GM full-size half-tons--avoid the 8-speed auto trans--it's junk. Oh, and on the subject of GM diesels, the Colorado/Canyon diesel is nothing more than a rebadged VM Motori 2.8L diesel--the same basic engine sold in the U.S. in the 2005-6 Jeep Liberty CRD--and the damn thing has a timing belt that has to be replaced at 150K miles. It actually is a good engine, except for that.

My biggest problem with Chevrolet pick ups is that you cannot get wheel arch mouldings. Stones chip the paint in the openings and then of course rust. EVERY 5 year old Chev I see has the wheel wells rotted out here where salt is used. GMC not so much. Can’t even buy asan accessory. Come on Chevrolet. Make them available at least!

Great comparison video, Tommy, great job. I would like to add additional information you left out in the video: Silverado Trailboss: Custom also has the 4.3L V6 as standard. Can get extended and crew cab, standard and short bed length on Custom, crew cab only with either standard or short bed on LT. Sierra AT4 Crew cab only with either standard or short bed length. If anyone wants a Silverado diesel to take off road, find one with the diesel, I suggest the RST model for its closest resemblance to the LT Trailbloss + its a cool model, have the Z71 off-road package, put on the factory lift kit, TRAILBOSS decal, and BOOM, Trailbloss Diesel. Just buy a Silverado w/o the TB package in a Z71 with the off road tires and you could get the diesel. I actually think the 5.3 gas is the better option for a long term owner. The 4 popper is too buzzy, the 6.2 L needs premium gas and that diesel has the DFP tech that is destined to fail.

Personally the biggest thing I’m not a fan of is on the Sierra, that carbon/plastic bed. No thanks. I don’t really see that holding up for 20-25 years. Maybe it will, who knows, but that seems like an ideal bed for someone who isn’t using their truck for much. I’ll take the steel bed and a bedliner.

I will take the AT4, in fact I did exactly that earlier this month. Mine is identical to that one shown. With this months GM promo's/rebates etc. It cost 55K out the door. They have rebates and employee pricing for everyone this month. Almost year around $8K-10K off sticker is really pretty common. You can get a AT4 spec more closely to the Trail boss shown here, and the price gets to be really close as well. That AT4 shown has a spec near same as Denali, so it is priced like a Denali.
