I looked through the comments to see if it was pointed out, but I didn't see it so... Stine doesn't remember writing about a giant mantis kaiju because the book it comes from (A Shocker of Shock Street) wasn't about the mantis. It was about two kids getting lost in an amusement park based around a series of movies called Shocker on Shock Street. The mantis was one of the attractions that tried to kill them by spitting tar at them and was never brought up again after they escaped. Stine doesn't remember the mantis until it spits the tar on the car.

There were actually quite a few books where the covers had nothing to do with the actual story. Two that I can name off the top of my head are “Creep from the Deep” and “Frankenstein’s Dog”. No giant eel ever showed up in CFTD and the dog was never sewn back together in the way that the illustration seemed to suggest. It never made sense to me as a kid why they didn’t show up in the story and assumed that I must have mixed up a chapter or something. For most books, the covers are a highlight of the book itself, but they liked to stray away from that, for some reason, every once in a while. A picture of some creepy ghost pirates would’ve suited CFTD so much better. There’s really no reason for me to be ranting so much about books that I read a decade ago lmaooo

32:40 Not only did they swap names, they swapped the careers they are teaching! Mr. Black (IRL R. L. Stine) is the new drama teacher since Jack Black is most famously known as an actor! And obviously Mr. Stine (Jack Black) is the sub for the English teacher since R. L. Stine is know for his books. I thought that was a cool homage to both of them. Also, would you be interested in talking about R. L. Stine's Zombie Town? It's a pretty similar movie to this Goosebumps movie but I thought it was a fun/easy watch. It's available on Hulu if you are interested.

30:12 Fun fact: the movie's lore for the monsters is generally lifted from this book! In it, a boy finds a magic typewriter that wills what's written into existance, and accidentally (sort of) releases the blob out of spite. Maybe that's why Slappy said he "saved this one especially for Stine" (the first one).
@SpongeyTheEditor
@SpongeyTheEditor 6 ай бұрын
Fun fact the orginal 2012 script, while having the same basic plot, has a bunch of fun differences. Cuddles the Hamster is in it as Slappy's bond villain pet basically, there's more of a moral to it about being brave, a few fun in jokes, some other different monsters and so on. You can find it on the Goosebumps wiki.

20:02 it might be a reference to how in the book the mantis was only mentioned in a few brief sentences and wasn’t actually a real monster just an animatronic at the shock street amusement park but the cover artist really stretched it to make an interesting cover (because the book doesn’t actually have any real villains or monsters) so it became an iconic monster despite not actually being that way in the book itself

I totally agree on the Hannah’s sacrifice bit, and another part of the movie that I think was incredibly underutilized was honestly Stine and Slappy’s relationship. Slappy is obviously incredibly attached to Stine and the movie literally shows us that they’re supposed to be two sides of the same coin! Slappy is supposed to be the epitome of Stine’s inner struggles and demons and yet their relationship is sort of, glossed over in favor of monster cameos and whatever teen romance Zach and Hannah had going on I love Zach and Hannah don’t get me wrong but I feel like you should spend more time fleshing out your villain if you’re going to give them a moment like the funhouse scene in the movie
@roguemystique7
@roguemystique7 6 ай бұрын
Since the Hannah sacrifice was taken back, they could've spent less time with their romance and more time with Slappy & RL. &I do love that Jack Black voiced Slappy. Makes it interesting when they're going back and forth and just the whole inner demons in general, even in a meta way with Jack Black himself.
@redballoon9007

Yeah Stine and Slappy’s relationship was kinda underutilized in the movie. If I had the power I’d swap one or two romance scenes for some Stine/Slappy parallel scenes. I’m actually surprised Slappy never had beef with Hannah either. You’d think Slappy would be just as mad at Hannah for “replacing” him as Stine’s child.

If I were a writer for the Tim Burton one, I'd base my screenplay on "The Haunted Mask." Burton loves to write outsider characters, aand Carly Beth endures teasing and bullying. Her wanting the creepy mask and to scare people back is a nice parallel to Burtons real life and how he loves creepy things, and felt a connection to old school movie monsters. If he made it in the 90s, he'd probably cast Michael Gough or Christopher Lee as the shopkeeper, which would be a delight.

Wheel of Fortune reduces the most common letters in the 1,000 most common English words to R S T L N E. I learned about that and that “I” is also a common letter when getting into cryptograms. Speaking of that sacrifice, on the Blu-ray's deleted scenes, there was an alternate version of the scene where she comes back where she doesn't remember who Zach is and they basically have to start their relationship over. It kind of reminds me of the ending of Dark City but much less impactful (and from my memory, the way Hannah acts and the dialogue makes it feel more comical).

I love this movie. My one issue is that we see at the end that he forgot to write the invisible boy in the book. Why couldn’t he have left Hannah out in the first place? It’s implied that all the monsters get sucked back in just because they are monsters but the invisible boy staying disproves that. Why was it different for Hannah?

I honestly had mixed feelings on this movie when I first saw it, being a longtime fan of Goosebumps since childhood. Its not a bad movie, I'm happy we got Two new Goosebumps movies at all. I wish the main characters were closer to the characters age in the books, I thought everyone was great acting wise. I agree with you it could've been a little scarier than it was. It was pretty damn funny though. I know the second movie gets some flack, but I think it feels more like a Goosebumps story than than this does.

Possible Fun Fact: The magic typewriter might be inspired by the typewriter from The Blob That Ate Everyone which is what brought the Blob Monster to life to begin with. That would be the most accurate depiction of the Blob that Ate Everyone as it was a creation of a story through a magic typewriter.

I wish the new series didn't "copy" the movie. You know, with a series it's alright to dedicate each episode for one story unlike a movie.

Cool to see you do a video on the Goosebumps movie as your 25k celebration video. I actually like the Goosebumps movie here. Love how the story went, the looks of the monster, especially Slappy, the references to the different Goosebumps stories, and the characters here. I like it in my opinion. Fantastic job making a video on this and congrats again on 25K subs! Can't wait to see where else your channel goes in the future.

Growing up with the tv series, I loved the horror concept. And in my opinion this movie should have been more horror based instead of a comedy. I know it was aimed for kids but a lot of people grew up with the books and tv show. Seeing a movie where the horror is amped up and being more violent would have been a great experience for those who are grown up now. They should have made a separate movie aimed for adult fans.

there was a alternate beginning where two movers are moving stuff they drop the night of the living book and the lock breaks slappy appears before the movers and when one of them refers slappy as a ventriloquist dummy he says who you callin dummy dummy the two movers scream in terror as the truck door closes behind them a slighty altered version of the beginning was used in the movie tie in game

Also pretty sure the haunted mask was there. And during the blob scene I always wished they had the Monster Blood instead. Especially since it is one of Stine's favorite monsters. Edit: I was half way through the movie and realize you mentioned the haunted mask

Also, King so ghouls are meant to be an evil spirit or phantom, especially one supposed to rob graves and feed on dead bodies. Zombies are brainless creatures that are the revived version of a human. I’m a huge fan for that kind of stuff (*^ワ^*)

I think a chillogy type goosebumps movie trilogy could have worked, each movie being based/mixing certain books eventually culminating in a combination of all the books (basically this movie)
