I looked through the comments to see if it was pointed out, but I didn't see it so... Stine doesn't remember writing about a giant mantis kaiju because the book it comes from (A Shocker of Shock Street) wasn't about the mantis. It was about two kids getting lost in an amusement park based around a series of movies called Shocker on Shock Street. The mantis was one of the attractions that tried to kill them by spitting tar at them and was never brought up again after they escaped. Stine doesn't remember the mantis until it spits the tar on the car.

There were actually quite a few books where the covers had nothing to do with the actual story. Two that I can name off the top of my head are “Creep from the Deep” and “Frankenstein’s Dog”. No giant eel ever showed up in CFTD and the dog was never sewn back together in the way that the illustration seemed to suggest. It never made sense to me as a kid why they didn’t show up in the story and assumed that I must have mixed up a chapter or something. For most books, the covers are a highlight of the book itself, but they liked to stray away from that, for some reason, every once in a while. A picture of some creepy ghost pirates would’ve suited CFTD so much better. There’s really no reason for me to be ranting so much about books that I read a decade ago lmaooo

32:40 Not only did they swap names, they swapped the careers they are teaching! Mr. Black (IRL R. L. Stine) is the new drama teacher since Jack Black is most famously known as an actor! And obviously Mr. Stine (Jack Black) is the sub for the English teacher since R. L. Stine is know for his books. I thought that was a cool homage to both of them. Also, would you be interested in talking about R. L. Stine's Zombie Town? It's a pretty similar movie to this Goosebumps movie but I thought it was a fun/easy watch. 30:12 Fun fact: the movie's lore for the monsters is generally lifted from this book! In it, a boy finds a magic typewriter that wills what's written into existance, and accidentally (sort of) releases the blob out of spite. Maybe that's why Slappy said he "saved this one especially for Stine" (the first one).
@SpongeyTheEditor6 ай бұрын
Fun fact the orginal 2012 script, while having the same basic plot, has a bunch of fun differences. Cuddles the Hamster is in it as Slappy's bond villain pet basically, there's more of a moral to it about being brave, a few fun in jokes, some other different monsters and so on. I totally agree on the Hannah’s sacrifice bit, and another part of the movie that I think was incredibly underutilized was honestly Stine and Slappy’s relationship. Slappy is obviously incredibly attached to Stine and the movie literally shows us that they’re supposed to be two sides of the same coin! Slappy is supposed to be the epitome of Stine’s inner struggles and demons and yet their relationship is sort of, glossed over in favor of monster cameos and whatever teen romance Zach and Hannah had going on I love Zach and Hannah don’t get me wrong but I feel like you should spend more time fleshing out your villain if you’re going to give them a moment like the funhouse scene in the movie
@roguemystique76 ай бұрын
Since the Hannah sacrifice was taken back, they could've spent less time with their romance and more time with Slappy & RL. &I do love that Jack Black voiced Slappy. Makes it interesting when they're going back and forth and just the whole inner demons in general, even in a meta way with Jack Black himself.
@redballoon90076 ай бұрын
Yeah Stine and Slappy’s relationship was kinda underutilized in the movie. If I had the power I’d swap one or two romance scenes for some Stine/Slappy parallel scenes. I’m actually surprised Slappy never had beef with Hannah either. You’d think Slappy would be just as mad at Hannah for “replacing” him as Stine’s child.

If I were a writer for the Tim Burton one, I'd base my screenplay on "The Haunted Mask." Burton loves to write outsider characters, aand Carly Beth endures teasing and bullying. Her wanting the creepy mask and to scare people back is a nice parallel to Burtons real life and how he loves creepy things, and felt a connection to old school movie monsters. If he made it in the 90s, he'd probably cast Michael Gough or Christopher Lee as the shopkeeper, which would be a delight.

there was a alternate beginning where two movers are moving stuff they drop the night of the living book and the lock breaks slappy appears before the movers and when one of them refers slappy as a ventriloquist dummy he says who you callin dummy dummy the two movers scream in terror as the truck door closes behind them a slighty altered version of the beginning was used in the movie tie in game

That would’ve been a cool beginning but idk if it would’ve made sense honestly

I do love that throw. It had so much force and did nothing. Also, the gnome scene was so stupidly funny that I'm embarrassed that I laughed at it more than my kid.

Also pretty sure the haunted mask was there. And during the blob scene I always wished they had the Monster Blood instead. Especially since it is one of Stine's favorite monsters. Edit: I was half way through the movie and realize you mentioned the haunted mask

Just a suggestion, but Kingnusmi, can you do a vid on Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark? The book terrified me as a kid and the movie was pretty decent.

Also, King so ghouls are meant to be an evil spirit or phantom, especially one supposed to rob graves and feed on dead bodies. Zombies are brainless creatures that are the revived version of a human. I’m a huge fan for that kind of stuff (*^ワ^*)

My favoyrite goosebumps story has always been The Ghost next Door and when I watched this movie and saw Hannah, I immediately went "Huh, just like the girl from the story" 😅

I think a chillogy type goosebumps movie trilogy could have worked, each movie being based/mixing certain books eventually culminating in a combination of all the books (basically this movie)
