I've had an MT-07 (2020) for 3 years now, and I cannot fault it. It's great fun to ride, reliable, quick, nimble, and looks fantastic. I rode a Hornet over the weekend, and tomorrow I'll put a deposit down on one. It had everything the Yam had (apart from the looks), and then some. The clutch and gearchanges were incredibly smooth, it was quicker, the optional quickshifter is fantastic, the bluetooth integration for satnav etc is great, and somehow there's even less wind buffeting at higher speeds. I've not been riding long, and I've only ever owned Yamaha bikes. I'll be genuinely sad to see the back of my beloved MT-07, but the Hornet impressed so much on that one test ride that I'm not sure how Yamaha will sell many more MT-07's this year.

I would have bought a used MT-09 or XSR900 over any of these bikes. Yes I'm talking used bike, but probably around the same price as a new Hornet/mt-07. I own XSR900 -22 and MT-07 -20 and once you ride the 900cc tripple, the paralell twin feels like quiet, slow tractor. The only thing the MT-07 is good at is the price I think. Its a great commuter bike, if you are a short person. An XSR900/MT-09 probably feels like a Fiat Uno compared to a super sportbike.....but the price (both purchase and insurance) will double or tripple. :)

Fun comparison! Let's hope the Hornet (and maybe the GSX8S) will finally give Yamaha the push they need to thoroughly upgrade the mt-07. I mean the last facelift... A weird looking headlight and funky colours won't make up for poor suspension, axial brakes and a right side up front fork. The MT is showing it's age and dated low end technology ... the bike has barely changed in a decade or so other than re-styling and very minor tweaks. @@MotoGoato True. But I think Yamaha is taking so long because it will be big update to the CP2 engine, which is mounted in multiple bikes . My guess is that it will get a ride by wire system. That will allow them to give all the features that it's currently lacking, especially in the T7 and Tracer 7. At the moment they have reached a limit with the tech on these bikes and I think costumers won't be happy if they go for another round of useless updates like we got until now.

The MT07 is still ideal for a shorter and reasonably light person starting to ride (35 kw version) - then the (low) ride height, suspension (soft), weight (low with 184 kgs wet) and handling (easy, also at low speeds) tend to shine. And as for the tires, if the MT07 has better tires, then I guess I'd be switching to those on the second set for the Honda (or another comparable pair that plays well with the Hornet). I wonder if I could also take the rear-view-mirror stalks from the MT07 as well, then repaint parts of the Hornet... Not sure about the Yamaha's top end being "interesting" .... unless by interesting you mean "a bit lacking". They have great bottom end and mid range grunt but start to run out of breath fairly early ... very sweet in the 30 to 80mph range though. I enjoyed the one I owned for a year and a half or so. No doubt the Honda has it beaten very comprehensively though ... seems like a better bike all around and for less money too, could even spec the quickshifter on to it and it would still be cheaper than the MT, plus the Honda quickshifter is a proper two way job not just the up shifter thats offered as an option on the MT.

Thanx for your work. But, i have to say, comparing BHP/kg doesn't make any sense, if you ignore the weight of the driver. Especially on Motorbikes, the Driver is about the third of the weight. So, if you include the drivers weight (the same weight to each bike), the difference in BHP/kg will be much smaller. My GSX-S750, just 2,5 years old, for about the same amount of money (8000 pounds) has plenty more BHP (114) out of an inline 4 and accelerates in half of the time from 0 to 100km/h (just under 4 seconds), revs much higher (12000RPM) and go much faster (240km/h). So i can not understand your passion about these two bikes. Sorry.

My buddy had a cb500r that was really pathetic on power, handled fine but it wasn't anything to write home about, and the engine characteristic was just bland, no revs, not a good sound. Honda's for the past few years have been in a weird place in the market, usually down on power, and steep on price compared to the competition, but this new Honda fills me with hope. Yamaha's had the corner for power and reliability, and of recently prices have been climbing astronomically. That Honda makes a GREAT noise, has the power numbers to back it up (and not by a small margin), you get reliability as Honda is known for, AND you get into it for less money. LOVE it, that's the competition I want to see, I'm strongly considering Honda for my next bike.

I own an 2022 MT-07 & never had a thought of regret it is super awesome & raw I enjoy it.👌🏽👍🏽👏🏽💯 Other brands like the Honda & Suzuki are trying to copy and add more for that I would upscale to a MT-09 & be even more happier.👌🏽👍🏽👏🏽💯

I have my money on the Suzuki GSX8-S. What it lacks it top end it makes up for down low. With a tune I guarantee we will see a 100hp 8S. It's a more simple elegant machine, with strong and effective hardware, but not the pile of boring electric nannies. Same reason I went with the GSXR750. No TC or ABS. Just the massive forks, stellar brakes and god level chassis. Suzuki knows how to make machines that don't often NEED the expensive and somewhat hassle-ridden aids.

CONGRATS on using the correct term, "pound foot" instead of the common incorrect "foot-pounds." No one says meter-Newtons, but even torque wrenches are miss labeled. Even Harley marketing says it wrong in their ad copy. Maybe it's a U.S. thing.

I really wanted to see this comparison. love the zero to 100 test. I wish you had included the new Suzuki twin and the Triumph Triton in this video. The Hornet seems like a great bike. except the looks don't do it for me. especially the ones with the red forks.

Initially I liked the red frame and forks, but now I think it looks cheap and nasty, especially as they seem to have two different shades of red. I agree, the yellow and metallic grey models look a lot classier. Great review as always MN.

I honestly think that no 2023 bike is the new king of the parallel twins, i still like the first generation MT07s (2014-2016) the most, the following model looks really good, too, but I personally am really dissapointed that new Naked Bikes dont look as good as their previous models

Didnt like the MT07, had one on loan when my bike was off the road... seat felt too flat, i like my 2011 versys 650 too much... its old, no assists, no abs and its tall... new versys 650 is waaaaaaay to technical to enjoy compared to old ones.

The new Hornet looks like an excellent bike. I was never a big fan of the MT-07 but then I prefer sportbikes. I'm still holding out hope that Honda will release a CBR750R but with the 650R out there (when you can actually find one), I may be holding my breath a while.

I don’t think yamaha is going to take this lightly. The cp2 engine in the mt07 is the most reliable engine I believe in the world! Now we got the same recipe in a HONDA! Yamaha needs to improve the cp2 or redesign the engine cp2.0 perhaps. It’s been a good run Yamaha but now it’s time for a new king. Congrats to the hornet.

Why did Honda make a twin 750? What does it do better than the CB-750 four. What about smoorhness? My CB-350 was smooth (hard to remember) but my larger BSA 650 vibrated a whole lot. Since then only horizontal or v-twin for me.

18:38 It's also a bigger engine, which this review doesn't seem to have taken into account. 66cc may not sound much but, given how much power manufacturers get out of any given capacity these days, that is actually a fairly significant difference in overall performance. If the Honda was also a 689cc engine, the figures would have been much closer. Comparisons like this are largely meaningless, as the major factor influencing the performance of each bike (i.e. the engines) are two different animals. Would you say a 6' 5" boxer is better than a 5' 9" one, because he has a longer reach? You should be comparing him to other boxers of that height (all other things being equal), or the whole exercise is pointless.

13:28 you're tapping out the bass limits on my laptop with that background music. I'd buy the MT, it looks way better and seems more polished. Granted Yamaha has had more time with that bike. Even though the Hornet is a blast from the past, it's a new package. I'm sure future iterations will be better if they keep it going.

@@ellistolchard4400 I had a 2015 MT07, had it for three years, and in that time went through 2 swing arms under warranty for rust, had to replace the water pump coolant pipes due to discolouration and corrosion, and what finally made me sell it was the rust on the third swing arm, headstock, frame and subframe. I take good care of my bikes but this was just something else. They're a budget bike, and some of that budget is achieved by using lower grade materials and very thin paint. Dont get me wrong I love the thing and still miss it, but all the stuff that was needing done to sort it made me fall out of love

Pretty good analysis in my opinion. But, things considered, MT07 is basically a 10 year old bike that stills holding the position in there, but has been overtaken by the new/fresher Honda CB750. Electronics, new engine, dash, etc. The problem with the CB750, is that literally everyone (and myself), was waiting a 4 cylinder 600 (the true Honda Hornet) and we got that. Carries this feeling of "disappointment" I would say, that makes it not shine as it should. And the aesthetics, I would prefer the MT07 over the CB750, but that would be more a matter of personal taste. Very nice video, again!

That’s what I thought until I rode one last week, I’m never buying an inline 4 again! The hornets engines way better, sounds better and has instant low down power you don’t get with an inline 4. Honda made the right decision with the engine.
