People like to focus on the Elements opposites. But I like what they have in common. 1. Air bending and Fire bending both draw energy from Breathing. 2. Water and Earth both use constructs, for defense or attack. 3. Water and Air both use "Fluid Movement" to avoid enemy attacks. 4. Earth and Fire, Opposite of said "Fluid Movement", both use "Horse Stance" to stay rooted to the ground as a basic form.

As the hippies said in Cave of Two Lovers, this movie suffered from destination sickness. They concentrated on the destination and not the going. They made fire benders require fire to bend. Fire comes from the breath and extends body. And, with dragon fire bending, fire is life. It comes from your life force. Never does it require external existence. I could beat one of these movie fire benders with a common garden hose by putting out their source of fire.

the bending seems off for two reasons - 1st, as you noticed, the bending seems to happen after the motions rather than with them, but also, in the animated series, they used actual martial arts which make sense with the different types of bending - in the movie, the guy playing Aang is a martial artist, but he does Taekwondo which is nothing like the art that Aang does in the series ... and the rest mostly just do random movements. There is no attempt to match the bending with the motions used in the animation at all. Mostly, sets and costumes they did ok with, but they didn't bother getting a lot of the other stuff right.

Exactly. The different elements are supposed to have different forms and styles, not just everyone randomly doing whatever they seem to think looks about right.
@TheFireMonkey11 ай бұрын

Firebending is based in the Chinese concept of chi, which is an internal energy which allows a person to move and live, it's like the soul but in form of vital energy. Firebenders use this energy and somehow externalize it to make contact with other elements like nitrogen and oxygen to create the flame. Also, just like one of the main concepts in Kung fu is breathing in order to use this energy to cause damage, Firebenders use their breathing to create fire

Maybe there's more lore to be had somewhere, but the show kind of hints at why firebenders can create fire from nothing: Iroh says it comes from breathing, and that lightning comes from separating and channeling energy. So it seems like it's the ability to distill energy from other sources, manifesting as fire.
@roryreviewer659811 ай бұрын
Not only that, but it’s a reflection of how each bender learned how to bend. The moon, the badger moles and the sky bison all manipulate the elements around them, so that’s how the benders learned to do it. But dragons make their own fire from within, so that’s how firebenders learned to do it.
@no1guy82511 ай бұрын
Firebending is really more like thermal or heat bending. I hesitate to call it Energybending, one because it's spoken for and two because energy is too broad. Firebenders do minor things like heat their air, heat water and ice without producing an actual spark or flame. That's why the breath and your own chi are so important...you will always be a source of heat until you die. And once you spark the air, and feel the sun, you can build it to incredible levels. Obviously there is something deeper at play with Firebending since it requires drive and motivation...that inner fire that does not refer to literal heat, but a Will within you, but every bending art has its underlying philosophy. Heating the air with varying intensities and levels of focus and direction creates all the pyrotechnics we've seen....blue fire, targeted combustion, jets, napalm, barrier walls, and Iroh's Big Bang Attack.

Firebending in the show is used as an extension of the body, and follows directly with each movement a bender makes (i.e., bending as visible Chi). This is why the show's fights feel so fluid. In the movie, bending is similar to Hand Seals in Naruto or drawing magic circles (i.e., motions instead of words to cast a spell). This makes fights feel very stagnant, as each person is effectively waiting for their turn to do a sequence of moves.

Shyamalan said he made this movie because his daughter was a fan of the show, and they sat down to watch it together as a family. After the movie came out, my first question was, "Why do you hate your daughter so much?" Every ounce of joy the series had in it was bled out. Pronunciations of names were changed (even Sokka, who explicitly SAID in an episode, "Sokka! NOT SOAKA!") Apparently, Shyamalan thought he knew how names *should* be pronounced. The races of characters made no sense or had any coordination to them (from Gran Gran to Katara and Sokka to the rest of the Southern Water Tribe for a first example.) Instead of basing the Fire Nation on Japan, now they're based on India. The meticulous crafting of bending styles based on the philosophies of various specific martial arts styles was completely abandoned in favor of "move around a lot and try and look cool." (Epic fail.) Some shots were lifted wholesale from the animated series. Shyamalan has the gall to claim, "Written, Directed and Produced by M.Night Shyamalan", when at most he can claim "adapted badly and filmed poorly by someone combusting their own career." And giving Aang the Katara speech to inspire the earth benders to revolt? Why was it even necessary? They had dirt ALL AROUND THEM. Katara had it harder in the series because they were on a FLOATING METAL PRISON. And doing Appa dirty like that? OY. And NO, you did not "feel nothing." You felt FEAR. And now that fear has made you, as it has the rest of us, very wary of the Netflix adaptation. It's a hecuva headwind Shyamalan created to persist so strongly for so long after his film came out.
@Shindai11 ай бұрын
Ah, the Last airbender, where Sokka is played by Anakin Skywalker :P The reason the bending doesn't land is it's so slow, and something that bugs me is, in the animated show, you could see the bending was based on different martial arts. In the movie people are just moving. Aang doesn't need to do flips and such. Bagua is a pretty grounded martial art. All those flips is ironically more fire nation Northern Shaolin style. The mispronunciation of things like Sokka and Agni Kai is... irritating. This movie feels like bad fanfic written by someone who saw the show once as a kid but doesn't quite remember

The problem with M. Night's movie is that he forget what was most important about the Last Airbender, hope. 100 yrs the nations have been at war, so many lives lost, so much despair. And when Aang comes back the first he wants to do is play... have fun. Even after he understands the world around him and how much it has changed, he still is a beacon of hope, fun, and love. Something all the tribes, (not just southern water tribes) have not had in generations. This movie was purposefully meant to be so over the top dark, lacking in humor, and a cliff note of the first chapter Water. Too much content to squeeze down into a short movie that is taken up by very long and silly cgi effects. Slowly learning the bending - because of the other nations - is so important and a loving message to bring people together. There was also that weird push for 3D to be added to ... stuff, that did not need 3D. Also everything was shot on a sound stage and you could see it constantly. The actors seemed fine, script was weak and did not cover the many loose ends by the end of the movie, or not even setting up a cliff hanger. I feel M. Night can easily make a great action adventure, and or fantasy, super hero movie, but he lost his way on this one. Glad you cover movie reactions BunnyT, but this movie is a waste of your precious time, when there are soo many better movies out there. But, it will allow you to appreciate good movie, by seeing bad ones. I would try a good French/American fantasy movie called, Dragon Hunters 2008, with Forest Whitaker. It has an interesting take on animated fantasy, kind cool.

It's funny to watch new reactors who've just finished the show watching this. They always start out with an attitude of "It can't really be all that bad!" and trying to see the best in it, and then get slowly (or sometimes rapidly) worn down until they admit that it is horrible. As some of the commenters, particularly those who saw the movie without seeing the show first, have pointed out, it isn't objectively one of the worst movies ever. I mean, you can't get around the fact that it's boring and the fight scenes are horrible, but I've certainly seen worse movies. It just seems like the worst ever when compared to the source material. But added to that are the totally arbitrary and unnecessary changes in name pronunciations, and the changes in lore that are pointless even when they aren't actively destructive to important plot elements in later parts of the original show. For fans of the show, those things seem like a deliberate slap in the face. That would have turned off a lot of show fans even if it had been a genuinely good movie otherwise.
@TankInATree11 ай бұрын
It is objectively a prime example of bad film making. If we ignore the tv-show and ignore that they had great material that they made worse in all instances (even though S1 is clearly the weakest of them), it has a lot of problems. No relationships in this movie is established in any meaningful way. The rules of bending doesn't even make sense within the movie... I mean, this is a world where the person with a bow and arrow would rule the world. It doesn't make sense that earth benders are trapped on the very thing that is supposed to give them power. They don't seem oppressed, only lazy and/or stupid, since even without bending, they could escape with a bucket of water. The world seems barren and lifeless and when there are people, it is so condensed that it looks like a small set. Characters and their acting is bad and uninteresting. Worst of all: BIG chunks of the story is just told to us. We are told how interesting the characters are, but never shown. We are told how the relationships develop, but never shown. We are told about the world, but almost do not see it. I mean, I am not a film maker and only have the very basic of knowledge... but even I know that this is film making 101: "Show, don't tell". Now there might be worse movies out there, but considering the budget and the director, it doesn't have the same excuse as many other bad movies and that makes it an even worse movie.

I think the fact that most reviewers ive seen dont realize that the fire bending is different in this movie shows that this movie is really bad at even a fundamental level of explaining of how the bending works. If I never watched the animated series I guarantee that this movie would've still been atrocious in my eyes. From the acting, monologuing, pacing, bad martial arts/bending, and casting. Hell even Appa is terrifying. Going back and answering the first question, the bending requires nearby fire in the movie where as in the show they did not.

It wasn't even the worst movie in the theaters at that time. As a non fan who had never seen the show it was overly simplistic, the actors really were trying, but they didn't have much to work with. The fans I went with said it was ten hours of story stripped down to an hour and ten minutes. Are you really going to say Marmaduke was a better movie?

@gallendugall891311 ай бұрын
@@bunnytailsREACTS Marmaduke is a newspaper comic strip that ran in papers from the 60s through the 90s. It was awful and unfunny big clumsy dog tropes. Someone got the film rights and made a bad CGI + Live Action movie which came out at the same time as The Last Airbender.

in the series, they specifically state that fire is different - in this movie I guess they didn't like that so they made it more like the other elements. Firebenders create the fire - but not in the movie. There was no respect given to anything in the movie. I mean, how hard is it to get the names right? If you can't even bother that - well .... but that's my opinion. To me it felt like "Oh look - this has a big following so I don't have to do any work at all - just grab bits of plot someone else create and make random changes so I can call it mine." The new series was made by people who are actual fans who loved the show. Shyamalan only watched a part of the series because his daughter liked it but he never even bothered to watch the first half of the series before doing the movie - so, this movie was done by someone who didn't care of respect the original material, the netflix series is done by people who loved the original - I think the series will be good and I hope it will be great.

I had a thought this morning that I haven’t been fully able to cogitate, but fire is different from all the other elements, isn’t it? Water, earth, and air are all a combination multiple elements from the periodic table. Fire.. you normally need some sort of outside force to create it, right? It doesn’t just naturally exist like oxygen, or water, or clay. Fire needs a catalyst? So it would make sense to me if fire bending is different from the others and that it would need to be created using energy or heat or something like that.
@TheFireMonkey11 ай бұрын
@bunnytailsREACTS I would say that fire is more an energy and the others are substances, so fire comes from within and the others ate about controlling about external substance.

M. Knight Shamalan is great at horror and drama, not so much with humor. My sister calls him Shamalamadingdong. She was 8 when she did that then it just stuck as ding dongs tend to do. Bunny, they decided to base the bending on actual Chinese martial arts, Air and water using soft Wu Shu like Taichi Chuan. The earth & fire on hard systems of Wu Chu like Hung Gar. There is a lot of mysticism in Chinese arts that require you to collect energy from the environment or your very cells in order to use it in attack or defense hence a lot of movement to build up air for a blast.

I see, interesting. I think it just feels off to someone who expects it to look a certain way having seen the animated show
@l.piloto796411 ай бұрын
@@bunnytailsREACTSI agree, when going from animated to live action the source material should be followed to keep the fans of the work engaged. This is why the original Christopher Reeves Superman was so successful, fans have seen the character fly since 1938 and they tried to " make you believe a man could fly".

The movie is somewhat disappointing, but it's far from being as bad as people make it out to be. As a fan of both the series and Wuxia media, I enjoyed the movie. They changed the pronunciations because they wanted them to sound more culturally authentic and less Americanised than in the cartoon. Unfortunately some names like Zhao (趙) and Yue (月) are still pronounced the Americanised way. But for Aang, they actually say it the way the Chinese character used to write his name in the show is pronounced (昂). This movie had a lot of behind-the-scenes problems. Early test screenings got a positive reception, but the studio stepped in and insisted that the movie be converted to 3D in post-production, which ate up a lot of budget that should have gone to effects, and forced the runtime to be shortened, so entire scenes were replaced with linking narration. Supposedly they also insisted the tone be kept more serious and dark. This movie is another example of how much harm executive meddling can do to a film. Still not as bad as what happened to Fant4stic, though. The movie wanted to emphasise the difference between the Fire Nation's misguided Firebending and Iroh's true Firebending learned from the dragons, by having Iroh be the only one able to conjure fire and not just manipulate it. It's a change from the series, but there's a reason for it. The thing that worries me about the upcoming live action series is that they're putting a lot of work into saying "We are not the movie", and doing the opposite of everything the movie did. The problem is, while they're doing the opposite of the things the movie did wrong, I think they will also do the opposite of the things the movie did right.

@@nicholasstockbridge5702 Well the main thing I'm noticing with the live action series is they're working so hard to look EXACTLY like the cartoon that they all look like they're wearing cheap halloween costumes. What's the point of adapting a cartoon to live action if you're going to just make it look like a cartoon? Adaptations aren't supposed to be exactly the same. The movie wasn't afraid to be a movie.

As long as you've already watched the animated source material FIRST, then go ahead and watch what you'd like and make up your mind. Enjoy what you enjoy, imo it's a shitty adaptation of the great Avatar, but as a film I guess it's ok to people who are not familiar

@@paulpolpiboon9535 I am one of those people that saw the movie first. As a movie lover, I can tell you I recognized this was not a good movie. The music and costuming was great and the cgi was not bad for the time, but the script, plot and pacing were just so bad. I had a friend tell me the original source material was worth checking out, so I did and the tv show is one of my favorite animated shows of all time. I watched this movie again years later as a watch-along with a reactor and OMG did I truly realize what a polished piece of garbage this truly is. I think I had blocked most of it from memory. Adaptions that are this bad make me want to check out the original source material more because it can only get better when you are rock bottom.

I definitely think everyone should watch the movie AFTER watching the original series. It will just make you appreciate the original that much more. Also, imprisoning the earthbenders in a CANYON is so dumb especially since the movie firebenders have been handicapped by needing a source to bend...

The bending looks weaker here to make events like the comet or the full moon greatly empower their bending. Fire benders needed a source of fire to control just like water benders. Eroh (because he isn't iroh) is known as the dragon of the west who was given the ability to create fire from nothing. Earth bending was harder to do because they were oppressed to the point of not bending for years.
