I kinda wish they kept Eric being the one plummeting the ship onto Ursula as a redemption. It worked so well in the animated movie, and here's my two reasons as to why: 1. Ariel saved Eric from drowning after the shipwreck, so having Eric save Ariel by doing the whole "sailing a (former) sunken ship onto Ursula's heart" brought it full circle. We observe land and sea protecting each other, showing how love for your kingdom and the other is worth protecting and fighting for; by having the sea (Ariel) saving the land (Eric), so the land in return saved the sea 2. Eric's redemption: Eric finally found his dream girl. After the curse he's put under is broken, he says something amongst the lines of "I already lost her once; I'm not gonna lose her again". He redeems himself by basically wanting to help out Ariel against Ursula, because he loves her, and now he's proving it, by doing whatever he can to stay by her side and fight her battles alongside her. He spent most of the movie wishing he could meet his dream girl with the beautiful voice, but he unknowingly got to fall in love with her all over again. By thinking the girl with the voice is a fantasy and throwing his flute (something Dylan mentioned), he's throwing away the fantasy he's living in on his head, because he has *her*, and she's *there*, and she's his reality, and he fell in love with her personality, willing to accept her "no talking no singing" flaw. He got tricked into pursuing a fantasy, and once the curse is broken, he realizes he fell in love with Ariel *twice*, one he's willing to protect, because she's his reality and his fantasy all-in-one, she's his happily ever after, and he'd do *anything* to protect it Having Ariel save Eric more than twice barely puts effort in the representation of land protecting the sea, which is not only terrible, but it also makes a very forced and unnecessary girlboss moment. Them saving each other shows maturity, protectiveness, and understanding of what a serious relationship is supposed to be: dedication and love to your partner. While this movie's Eric has moments where he shows he likes and has taken an interest to Ariel, we as an audience don't get the sense of him loving her as deeply as she does him because he's not protecting her back, making him seem (to me at least) immature, a bit whiny, and WAAAYYYYY too sheltered by being unable to take risks and own it

I love this reasoning. It also makes her line to King Triton about Eric helping her make a bit more sense.

they did make a contract! but it was one done in blood instead of writing. the director wanted to get rid of the possibility of writing under the sea bc if ariel could write then she could just write “i’m ariel i’m the one who saved you a sea witch took my voice” so that’s why she plucks a scale from her tail for a drop of blood
@rachel5399 Жыл бұрын
IMO, that made it so much more intense. Like damn, she's really risking it all. The "contract," thing seemed too formal and not magical at all, so I don't know why the same people who're complaining about the movie "not being magical enough," find this change a problem? The signing thing, seems like she's buying a car, not making a life altering decision regarding her autonomy lmfao. I stand 100% behind that decision and am glad they changed it.
@TruongNhat-cr6ob Жыл бұрын

@clairelin0216 Жыл бұрын
But the blood contract should make it impossible for Ariel to agree to it, I can see why she agreed to it when it's paper contract as she doesn't need to risk the possibility of bleeding out both before and after her transformation, making it easier for you to believe that Ariel would trust Ursula with no bleeding involved on her part. I would also assume that the only thing Ursula suggests Ariel to use would be her only way to communicate as a mute human girl, considering her nature as a villain, she wouldn't leave the writing option for Ariel, and it makes sense that she would only provide one way to go around the condition of her deal instead of more than one way to do it.

@@ChiIIi... A lot of the things they try to fix are not problems to begin with, in the animated version, it was like as Ursula was singing and everything was happening at that moment was going completely out of Ariel's control, it's like even the fish bone pen that appeared out of nowhere combined with Ursula's smug expression was Ursula saying "You have no way out of this deal once you grab the pen." I don't know how I was able to understand that as a child and went along with the story and move on while years later I see a bunch of adults saying there are a lot of problems with this masterpiece movie and want to change it, but they changed it into something I don't even recognize as the same masterpiece anymore.

One thing I really don't understand about this live action is how everyone, including halle herself, said the original was about ariel only wanting to go to the surface world for a man, and how they were going to change that. But in this movie it makes it seem like that WAY more. In the original, ariel had went to the surface multiple times, regardless of her father's wishes. She was always longing to live up there and she had way more experience up there than the new one. Who doesnt even go to the surface until she sees the ship passover (thats why they made scuttle a different bird. So she can meet her underwater). Actually similarly, the change with "kiss the girl." They said that the original made it seem like Eric was forcing himself onto her, but SHE was the one who kept trying to kiss him, and he even turned away?!? In this movie she doesn't even remember she's supposed to kiss him?? It seems like the majority of the things they tried to change about the original story weren't even in it. And then actually implemented the nonsense they believed into this movie ten fold 💀 what was really corrected about the original?
@boxbo7926 Жыл бұрын
Yes, I think you make a great point about the changes to Ariel’s character. If you look at the lyrics to part of your world, her goals are not things, people, or possessions, she wants to experience and learn things! Which Eric gives to her in their bonding montage. Everyone seems to forget that

The whole vampire “reveal” in the movie is so dramatic and over the top, whereas in the book it’s just a casual conversation in the car, with Edward calmly explaining the situation and Bella totally unfazed by it all. Also, Robert Pattinson yells about what a monster he is, how she could never fight him off etc, where as in the book Edward says it all quietly and calmly, which makes it much more creepy and impactful. Most people I talked to thought he did a great job as a less angry King Triton and that he seemed more realistic as a good father. Which I didn't agree with at all and all I could think about when he came on screen was about how this man didn't care one bit about this role.

Every problem that I had with acting in this film, I personally blame it on the direction. I understand that they didn't want Triton to be scary because he's supposed to be a loving worried father, not a villain, but I feel like all the actors were directed to not frown their faces in any way that showed a single wrinkle, except for Ursula
@Rikrobat Жыл бұрын
I think part of the problem is his voice / line delivery. He can be less scary, but we need more emotion in his face and voice to believe he's worried for his daughter's safety. Even lean into emotional exhaustion with a daughter who doesn't understand the dangers such that he makes the painful decision to risk their relationship to try and destroy her human keepsakes. But, to me, he just sounds tired like the actor partied all night before the shoot.

I think they changed the fork scene to include the female vendor because she is played by Jodi Benson, the original voice actor for Ariel. So by her saying “You’re going to need this,” and handing the current Ariel the fork, it’s like passing the torch. Or the “dinglehopper” in this case. It’s a very cute thought and I’m actually happy they brushed against the fourth wall to include her. I do agree with everything else Dylan said however. So many people missed that cameo and its importance! I really love symbolism in movies, so this really stuck out to me when I saw it in theaters. I felt like overall the movie had more depth compared to the original when it came to the symbolism and some of the added plot points, like the blood-binding contract instead of a signed one, Ariel and Eric's connection with wanting to explore new places and feeling misunderstood, how Ariel cried at the end when there was the quote about how mermaids can't cry in the beginning, etc. Some of the comedy fell flat, but I was actually pleased with a lot of the decisions that were made from a filmmaking standpoint. That insignificant moment to YOU, was to show how defeated and hopeless she felt after the song. To let the audience digest the "I wish" song and go: oh that wasn’t real right? melissa mccarthy really did do such a great job as ursula, it's crazy how often she tends to get overlooked as only a comedic actress. but really her strength in everything i've seen her attempt is she always brings a ton of energy to her performance. which really as Dylan also emphasized is what this film reallyyy needed to be strong, just a ton of energy in performances, extravagant musical numbers, more energized camera work, vibrant displays of color- but the performances of ariel & ursula were def the standouts for me. i also think the creators could have done something really interesting if they played up the contrast more between the human & ocean worlds, by making each vibrant but in very different ways. playing up with more contrast between the fantastical feel of sea life & the grounded imperfection of the human world, which ariel fimds so much fascination and whimsy in, prompting us to see such ordinary things through her fresh curiosity. esp because one thing i liked abt this live action version which the og didnt have is the opportunity to involve real cultural elements of the caribbean. wish theyd done even more of that

As an artist, I really have a problem with the color grading of this movie, I understand they probably wanted to give off the underwater vibe and also hide some bad CGIs in the process by making it darker, but there was practically no contrast in a lot of the underwater scenes to make you see anything that is important to the story. But in the animated version, even if the resolution isn't so well, you can still tell what you're supposed to focus on in the darker scenes because the characters' color grading make them pop. From a plot perspective, I feel like the story of the remake is all over the place without clear focus points, and the story drags on with the extra material because heaven forbid we not make new songs that could get a best original song award, right? It also feel like they just don't want Ariel to get any kind of support from anyone, but getting support from the villain is okay for them simply because the villain happened to be a woman. And how anyone could think that singing Part of Your World with the same intensity as Let it Go is okay while the song is a private monologue is beyond me. I honestly didn't want them to touch the animated version and make this remake at all as I adore the 2D hand drawn animation style and the animated version, but I guess even that is too much to ask from Disney because they've got no creativity now.

@@vincentdarkrosrayneyou literally just explained exactly what the quote is talking about. You can’t see the tears, you can’t see how much pain they are in, therefore they go unheard and suffer more. That’s why at the end she thanks her dad for hearing her and he says he should never of had to given up her voice to be heard. It parallels and relates back to the fact that her dad doesn’t see her suffering and therefore wouldn’t listen to her. He can’t see her tears so he doesn’t realize just how much he is hurting her. Thus by the end of the movie when she is human she is finally living a free life where she is free to not only express her emotions but have her emotions be heard and validated and understood, elevating her suffering.

I watched it the other night and thought pretty much the same as you. Ursula and the crab pretty much carried the film. Things I found really bad were, her father's acting, her acting, the god awful bird, the fact that they made Eric be adopted with no purpose but to add more diversity to the film, the way that they changed the fork scene, they didn't have the fish interacting hardly in Under the sea so it was super weird when he starts singing The newt play the flute, the carp play the harp, the plaice play the bass etc, and there are no fish acting out those scenes like in the animated film. I also found it super weird at the end when all the mermaids come out of the water and most of the land folk had never seen a mermaid and they're just totally expressionless, like they're in a trance or something! They also that she had amnesia and forgot she had to kiss him and I have no idea why because it doesn't bring anything to the film at all. It's a shame because there were some funny moments in the original where she is trying to get Eric to kiss her. Also like you, I found it way too long. It definitely could have been half an hour shorter.
@summersnowT-T Жыл бұрын
I haven't seen the movie but from this commentary all I thought was, could they not have had a plot of Ariel and her sisters being adopted too? Then they could have tied it back with the whole Eric was adopted and segued into why or even if they didn't explain it, it would have made the two characters feel way more connected. And it could have deeper character meaning for Ariel feeling like she was so different and never belonged in her world. Then they could have done a better job of build the relationships and sense of community so the ending would have a bigger impact and Ariel would know that she was truly accepted by her family and friends despite choosing a different path. Idk they literally had such a great opportunity to dive deeper into these characters and give the audience a whole new "lesson" to learn, if they hadn't been so concerned with trying to copy the original but make it more divers.
@theartsyzoologist Жыл бұрын
The film makes a lot more sense if you have read the book (which I totally recommend as it details the sisters, their backgrounds, kingdoms, and how they came to be born as the ethnic backgrounds they are). But to your point, I also had thought about Ariel and her sisters being adopted too, that their mother a human that took all the girls on from ships had befriended Triton in the process of crossing seas or something like that. She had a gradually abusive husband who eventually threatened to kill the girls because they took too much of his wives attention and he grew jealous. He accidentally kills the mother/his wife andenraged goes for the girls who then flee to Triton who then becomes their father and grants them life as mermaids. I don't know it is just my weak but different spin on how things could have gone.

I don't know how I didn't know this before, but the story behind Ariel and her sisters' race is because Triton is the king of the 7 seas, and he has 7 daughters. @@mastermangouste5425why was it important for them to fight Ariel's villain together? Because he did in the animated? Wasn't he there in some capacity but was getting his ass handed to him by the water? Truly, he would've drowned if he tried any harder. Ariel can breathe under water and is born of the same magical enviornment of her foe, making sense that she could sense and predict her movements with more ease. & now that she realizes that she was tricked into an unfair fight(of Ursula conveniently not mentioning that Ariel will have amnesia, making her sense of urgency completely nonexistent to a task that requires it), and having a lot more to lose now, wouldn't that make her more apt to want to kick Ursula's ass? With that anger? Eric would've died immediately if he tried to do more. Ursula is Ariel's villain, after all. It's not that bad of a change to have her, the protagonist, take down her own antagonist.

I didn't like the fact that she saved him in the end. She already had her powerful moment of taking back her own voice but Eric was supposed to be a great sailor without fear and he just hangs like a ragdoll on that rope.... felt like a forced girlboss moment that didn't add anything. Plus the iconic dress scene where she stepped out of the water was completely erased... i hated that. But overall I enjoyed it

It also doesnt make sense how she can steer, like steering a ship is no joke. They went out their way to make eric a travel guy but took his moment to shine like what? Also story wise it doesnt make sense why ursula is trying to kill eric like she is supposed to be mad at ariel for killing her eels and dead set on killing ariel not eric.
@rrk426 Жыл бұрын
Yeah great points about how badly they handled Eric in this scene. I also hate that it took away a moment for him to prove his worth and goodness to the king, which is needed for multiple reasons. One, to tie in the plot point that humans can be good as Ariel argued and it would be a piece of him seeing that she is right and leading him to turn her human in the end. Also, what I think is even more important is it develops Eric’s character and an actual relationship between him and the king. It gives Eric the chance to show he is worthy of his daughter, he is brave and resourceful, it reinforces the core part of his character loving and being skilled in ships and travel, and most important for Tritan’s perspective, Eric is risking his life for her so he must genuinely care. It also makes Ariel look disingenuous and silly when she tells her father, it wasn’t just me saving the day, “Eric was there too” bcuz we know he didn’t do anything to change what happened. Saying he was ‘there too’ makes him sound like the guy who just put his name on the group project that he didn’t do any work on. And he really needed something epic to do in the movie, because pretty much throughout it he doesn’t have any huge moments that affects the movie path or shows the extent of his capabilities in real action. Being the one to steer the ship into the giant monster ursula was the extreme situation in which he could’ve. Also like you said Ariel had the big moment of taking back her own voice, and many moments beside that to show her strength and character (like going to Ursula in the first place to get what she wanted). Eric really needed this moment to flesh out his character and establish stronger connections with the king and also Ariel herself, because she would’ve seen the risk and actions he took to save her, his love, and goddamn if that isn’t princely and handsome and romantic! Which after all this is a fairytale and both the prince and princess should be admirable and swoon worthy, and as it stands animated Disney Eric > live action Eric.
@rachel5399 Жыл бұрын
Agree to disagree but I don't think that it was that bad. I agree with the steering thing, and they definitely could've made him help more, but in the animated one, Eric practically saves Ariel. I kind of enjoyed the protagonist taking down their own villain. I didn't get the "girlboss," moment and I think that labeling it as such kind of diminishes Ariel as a lead. Eric already showed her his world. He played out his part. I kind of appreciate the human whose whole life practically, was royalty. Ariel is a mermaid whose existence has to keep hidden, while fighting off sharks and presumably other predators. I think her fighting her villain in her element(sure, he's a sailor so he feels comfortable at sea, but she's literally a fish)shows her courage and gives her her flowers as she is finally able to be seen when fighting Ursula. I just think they could've had ber defeat her in a much more Ariel-esque way, because the lack of that DOES makes you wonder why Eric couldn't have contributed more. But, truly, what was his human ass going to do against a Godzilla sized Ursula? I'm going to assume that Ariel is stronger, and has a keener sense on Ursula's abilities and predictable movements as they are apart of the same enviornment that Eric is not. Not too mention she ability to breathe under water, which helps because..they're fighting in the ocean.

The reason why Eric was adopted was for two reasons, I think. One, since his bio parents died in a shipwreck and he washed up on shore as a baby, it's supposed to explain his whole thing with exploring. He feels like his origins/backstory is out there in the sea somewhere and he wants to go look for it. That's why he's always on a voyage. Two, since he lives on an island, he's the the only outsider. This is supposed to be a parallel to Ariel where they both feel like they don't belong (Ariel liking humans, Eric being adopted), and I think it was supposed to be a bonding point because they both feel like a fish out of water (pun intended). That's just what I think, though, not sure if it's confirmed.

Fun fact: In the Disney story, the only consequence to not receiving true love's kiss is that the Little Mermaid would lose her voice forever, however in the original story by Hans Christian Andersen, the consequence is that the Little Mermaid would desolve into bubbles and die. The ending is very different as well. In the original story, the prince falls in love with someone else and she is forced to choose between his hapiness and her own. She ultimately choses his happiness and safety over her own as a sign of true love and ends up dissolving into bubbles.

I like that they gave Eric a personality and that him and Ariel seemed to have an actual relationship of sorts. The colours should've been brighter, I really do think that. One mother and white dad had this many children who are all different race? I get representation, but that's a bit strange, but whatever. I didn't mind the fish talking, though they did lose some of that magic (love sebastion tho), the bird eating fish and then going underwater is weird to me too tbh. They didn't even have any sort of personalities or played any role in this. Also, I didn't like Ariel's outfit on land. She looked like Alice and that headband threw me off a bit. They could've given her a long pink dress in that same cut with pearls in her hair or something. Also, they just let her stay in the castle? At least in the original they thought she was a princess, but that's some idealistic kingdom right there.Also I feel like her hair could've been brighter. Ursula was great, her essence was just like the original.

I feel like a lot of hype was built up around the fact that each sister was a different ethnicity but then they did absolutely nothing with their characters. There was so much potential. They never did in the original movies either and there might be sequels to this. Also, Ariel spends half of the movie ON LAND, so of course her sisters wouldn't be used during those kinds of scenes.

No, I read that they're all different races cause they represent the 7 seas, which are all located in different continents so that's why they all looked like that. Makes sense actually, but then again, the movie is called The Little Mermaid, not The Little Mermaid and Sisters, lol, so they were never going to be the focus of the film or have a big big role.@@khushim436

originally, the sisters give away their hair to settle with Ursula to save Ariel from dying after she failed to kiss the prince. If that was included here it would've given so much depth to their relationship with Ariel and made sense why Triton's line would bring her to tears.

I can finally rest now that I hear this from a big channel like you, THANK YOU

I agree with you about the last part when Ariel and Eric leave, and then there is that reunion with her dad. It felt empty. And he says "We are all here for you", and it pans out to the sisters and then the whole mermaid kingdom. It just didn't make sense because we didn't get any interaction with the rest of the merpeople. It could've just been the sister and the king, and that's it. Because then it would've felt close. Also, I think Eric's song could've been shot differently because almost all of the singing is done on land, and then ten seconds of it is on a boat, which doesn't make the song that interesting. theres my thoughts.
@monsterhanna6691 Жыл бұрын
They also mentioned how the human world and the mermaid world can't co-exist together, yet Ariel and Eric got married and Triton was just trying to show her that she'll always have a home, hence why she cried for the first time.

I knew that scuttle butt song was coming… and Dylan’s reaction did not disappoint. I felt the same way when I saw this in theatres. I thought Triton and Scuttle were terrible, while Sebastian and Ursula carried every scene they were in. Good commentary, fellow young adult.

I disagree, Sebastian was the worst. Even scuttle which was terribly cringe was better. Apart from that I think it was a good movie.

In my opinion, Triton and Ariel were tied for worst. Javier seemed more like a hostage victim, being forced to do this role…almost like we would see someone just off screen pointing a weapon at him if the camera panned over a little😂! As for Halle, she has a beautiful singing voice, but her acting was atrocious! Why wouldn’t Disney use a tiny bit of the $250+ million budget to help her out a little with acting lessons?! That seems totally bonkers to me!

@@glorygloryholeallelujah I disagree she and Melisa McCarty were the best thing about this movie. Pretty much everyone else was terrible. Eric, Triton, Sebastian and Scuttle were really bad. I don't know how you mess up Under the sea but they did.

@@cobrakaier238 eh. We will agree to disagree on Halle. ❤️ However I agree with the rest of your “horrible” list! Sebastian especially! How do you make *•under the sea•* sound bland and lifeless?? @@glorygloryholeallelujah everyone else had a different accents, having someone with a French accent wouldn't have hurt but it's an exxagerated scene I get why they didn't include it. I agree that for me as an adult, scuttle especially was one of the more annoying parts of the movie. But, I also did go see it in theaters when it released, and all of the part that scuttle was on the screen were the parts that kids loved the most. Like some kids actually got up and started dancing during scuttles song in my theater. I think that one of the best parts about disneys animated movies is that they do a great job of blending humor for adults and humor for kids with things like jokes that you dont get until you’re older. In contrast this movie felt more like they just included both jokes for kids and jokes for adults separately. Also, in the part where Eric is singing they mention that his parents died in a ship wreck which is why he was adopted. I dont really feel like they needed to touch on that more, and I feel like it lowkey helps to normalize non-traditional families by feeling like they dont have to explain why they exist.
@jenniferlewis8514 Жыл бұрын
idk tho but if you're thinking about it from a movie standpoint, it's just lazy writing and even lazier production on Disney's part. If the intention was just to normalise something then all they're doing is virtue-signaling. Dylan was right you can't just change something like that and not explain why
@mastermangouste5425 Жыл бұрын
Except when watching the movie I didn't feel like it was meant for kids like at all... Kids love bright colors and unrealistic characters and environment so why make the sea world so freaking blend and boring when you could literally invent glowing and crazy colorful plants and animals to make it more lively? To me Disney lost their sense of demographic which is sad.. This movie isn't for adults and it's not for kids either wtf are they doing?
@rachel5399 Жыл бұрын
@@mastermangouste5425I think the movie just wasn't for you. I'm 22 and I was singing along(in my head of course lol) at the theater, moving my head, tapping my foot, remembering the songs that I sang as a kid. I felt butterflies looking at Ariel & Eric fall in love. I thought that the coloring could have been better but there were a lot of colorful shots. The entirety of Under The Sea is super colorful. Also, you're mostly in Ariel's perspective, which is one that is tired of the ocean, so she doesn't see it as vibrant as you perhaps would. I heard a lot of kids laughing and having fun whenever Scuttle was onscreen, and Sebastian.
@mastermangouste5425 Жыл бұрын
@rachel5399 Nah I'm actually a sucker for more realistic or adult-oriented adaptation of kid's stories (Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, watching the live action One Piece rn and so on) I was so glad that they set up interesting and more political aspect with Eric's mother being scared of the sea so much that she doesn't support trades between islands, the problem of humans soiling the sea and so on. But they never resolved those plot point? When they could've added a small scene between Triton and Eric's adoptive mother finally shaking hands and making a deal where the mermaid people help the ships navigating the coast so that shipwrecks stop polluting the ocean, so a win-win peaceful situation, they did nothing at all with those interesting aspects! The final scene were the mermaid folks get out the water to say goodbye just feels weird then... Humans are not even paying attention to them when it's probably the first time they see them from up close like no emotion at all during that scene when it's the meeting of two people who used to hate each other as it has been stated... As an adult it leaves a lot to desire bc the interesting plot lines are never addressed again and as a child it's just a lesser and boring-looking version of the original to me
@lolarose8973 Жыл бұрын
@@jenniferlewis8514 I think the reason why is explained pretty subtly, it's to give Eric and Ariel another connection. It explains why Eric has this pull to the sea and exploration, he lost his parents in it, therefore he knows the danger but is intrigued.
