This is really sad. If Korean media is desperate to get news out of BTS then they should show what BTS achieving rather than creating a scandal out of nothing. I don't understand, BTS is doing so much then why Korean media is waiting for their down fall... I don't quite agree... if the companies were to use bts' succes they'd do it earlier, and starting from internal changes. From what i can see that's not happening and many fans are sad bcs of the awful managements of their groups. The only thing that's in the way of properly promoting their groups is their own issues within the companies. Bts isn't getting excused for enlistment and a billboard #1 doesn't mean they'll get it either.

one thing I've realized is that initially korean media has often downplayed or just outright ignored bts's achievement over the years. only when they got their bbma social award did media start paying attention. and now bts is all that's talked about. and so many journalists and media outlets are grasping at straws waiting for a scandal to witness the 'downfall' of bts. this is esp seen with that reporter who works w yg asking about 'plagiarism' during persona's press conference. and right now with the unnecessary attention of jungkook's car accident (to which the articles say that jk and the taxi driver have come to a mutual agreement yet this minor fender bender is being pushed to court) & also jtbc trespassing and lying on behalf of bts and bighit. it's so tiring.

I miss when there was credibility when it came to news, but to me it seems like after President Bush the news fell apart. I am only in my late 20s and i was very young during Bill Clinton so i do not know, but i have seen some old news clips that had fake stuff even back then. I feel like there's a difference between media abuse and media clout. Obviously what JTBC is doing to BTS is abuse. Not only did they illegally break into Big Hit and reported false news intended on turning ARMY's against the company, but after the official statement was released, they did not issue an apology for their unprofessional journalism but instead released another article about a minor car accident JK was involved in that was settled a while ago. Instead of being professional and admitting they were in the wrong, they are trying to bury their mistake by bringing up old BTS news that everyone knows was resolved. That in my opinion is media abusing BTS. Media clout is a completely different thing. While it is tiring to see BTS in headlines, titles, or thumbnails that are for videos are articles that only mention BTS for 2 seconds, it doesn't hurt the group or the fandom. It's just lazy journalism. For issues such as the military exemption for Idols, I believe that the media was doing both. The media knew that BTS is loved all over the world, and if the fans had a choice, they would not want to see them go to the military and by including their name the issue would gain traction. So they included BTS' name throughout the entire debate. However, BTS and Big Hit had never voiced a desire to be a part of this issue. In fact, when questioned by a political figure, they said they were hurt that the media kept on including them because it made them seem like they wanted an exemption when they never desired one in the first place. They have always planned on going to the military and they made it clear that even if they were exempted they would still enlist. The media, in this case, not only used BTS' name to make this topic more prominent but hurt BTS as well as in their desperation to have an issue gain importance.

This JTBC thing is a comedy of errors. I see questionable use of BTSs fame all the time in America. I expect it here because our media is crap and riddled with issues. But It’s unfortunate that the Korean media is behaving in this manner. I hate it for BTS and the general public who loses faith in sensible reporting. Has no one ever heard of the “Jordan effect?” Basically it’s when you hit a level of greatness so they use you to compare to other great things. It’s not a direct comparison. For example, “the Jordan of chess” meaning the best player of chess. Get used to it. BTS is at such a super high level that it’s gonna happen forever. If you get uptight every time it happens you will NEVER be happy.

i agree with you that bts is going to/already has the jordan effect when it comes to global impact, but i think the reason david is so mad about the comparison is because they are _directly_ comparing the two's level of success, when, like david said, it's not close at all. (pengsu currently has 1.7 m subscribers.... bts has 24 m, thats not the same level at all) if the articles had said something like "pengsoo is the bts of korean youtube right now", that's a bit weirder of a thing to say because bts's jordan effect hasn't fully set in yet, but it would make much more sense and i don't nearly as many people would be mad about it.

I kind of think this media issue has two points. 1) whoever gets a scandal on BTS, gets the honors of saying they’re the ones able to do it. 2) we all know at least one BTS member will have to enlist next year, so they may be trying to bring the group low in order for another to climb into the spotlight. 🤷🏻‍♀️ No facts, just theory. Sure, I’d love for them all to stop their abusing, using, & clout seeking of BTS, but we know it won’t happen... & honestly, it doesn’t truly impact me. I love these guys music, & will continue to, regardless. Unpopular opinion, I’d kind of like them to drop their album, do their thing throughout the first half of the year, pre-record a bunch of content to be release at a later time, & all of them just enlist at the same time around Oct. Don’t announce it before hand, skip all year end awards, & just make it a big statement that no one gets to dictate what they do, when they do it, or decide what’s important about them.

I agree and low-key am waiting for this to happen. It's not a stretch especially when Big Bang releases videos that are months old. The International fans are used to getting these old videos. I think it would be almost seamless and they had a great Korean award season in 2019 it wouldn't take much to skip 2020 as a group. I think I’m more concerned that adults are fascinated by this penguin. I was creeped out looking at it as you guys talked 😆 But I do get both sides. On the one hand who cares. Using what is popular to get attention isn’t new. I don’t think people should be so upset about it. But I do understand that it can be frustrating in certain situations. In this particular situation, however, I don’t think it’s a big deal. When people get so upset over every little thing concerning BTS it makes me think that they are a bit too possessive over the guys. I don’t ever want the guys to be abused but the penguin story situation isn’t abuse!

Sonal Shirke I understand that. However, if there are news that comes out that isn’t true, the truth eventually comes out. So if anything, those hating on BTS have to eat their words. That’s why I say who cares what anyone has to say. I just see that people on either side are too reactionary. But, again, I do understand your frustration. I don’t like like it either. I just think that sometimes we have to take a step back before we go in the attack. By the way, I do think that the BigHit situation is more serious. But I believe that the concern should be what that media outlet did. I personally don’t think that what they did was right. I don’t know what the laws are like in Korea but that definitely should be illegal to break in and spread false information about the company. So if anything the focus should be in that, not what those who hate BTS think about BigHit. ☺️

I don't think comparing Paengsu and BTS is that bad. I think Danny had the same reaction I had at first. As a fan, You don't want BTS and what they stand for and their powerful messages being compared to a parody penguin. Paengsu and BTS are both popular in Korea, and the Chinese article made Paengsu seem international so the Korean journalist decided to compare them thinking that they're both international Korean icons. But David is also right, the journalist of course did it for clicks and traffic. I also agree Paengsu wouldn't translate well in the west. I'm in the US and I do think Paengsu is funny, but that's because all I consume is Korean media: tv, music, history documentaries, movies, everything. So I'm aware of Korean social nuances that many westerners wouldn't understand. Informal and formal speech being one of them. Since English doesn't exactly have that

Whenever I see BTS in the news title, I clicked. But then it is like only 1% of the content is BTS related. Journalist are deceiving readers for views. Armies and Koreans definitely know that BTS is bigger than Pengsu but when you compare the two in the title, those who are not so familiar with BTS will think the two is comparable. The image and value of BTS will be affected!!
