The main thing that doesn’t really make sense to me about debuting SuperM in the US right away, is that Korea knows this group is special & international kpop fans know this group is special, but to the general public in America they will be “just another kpop boy group.” One of their key strengths (recognition/respect/reputation) is kind of wasted in the states. (& then a side note would be, aren’t baekhyun, Taemin & Kai all pretty close to military service?)

wow this is so true! A 'super' group in kpop is just another kpop group in the us. i would compare this situation to snsd's tiffany having to redebut and start from nothing after being a part of the most successful kpop girl group. nct 127 will have some previous fans but you are so right when you say that they are wasting their reputation in the industry on a market that doesn't care; even if they are talented (and boy are they talented...)
@seemebeme10205 жыл бұрын
Ruby Suho oh okay thank you for the info :), yeah unless they’re literally just trying to use his specific face & name, it doesn’t make sense to redebut him and then lose the groups main vocal like a year later (not that the others can’t sing, or that baekhyun isn’t super talented in other areas as well, cuz he is, but he’s the only one who’s MAIN position is vocals, while the others MAIN positions are dance, rap, or visual, So hows that gona work when he has to leave?)

Americans who are into Kpop know who Baekhyun and Kai and Taemin are believe me! It wont be just an unrespected group here. I am slayed by the line up and will fully support them and share their work with everyone I know. I will be promoting them from my little corner of the world. I think it is sad that so called 'fans' would boycott their idol's projects, all that does is make the artist look bad and make all their hard work go to waste....people need to get over themselves and support the work of the ones the love to watch!

On one hand, I see so many western reactors asking why the English speaking music makers and entertainers can't be as good as many of the Kpop groups, so there might be an opening in the market there. On the other hand, as much as I like BTS's music, I think for many people in the US, their story is what got them so popular. The music may have caught people's eye but when they look into the group further is when they fall into the rabbit hole. Americans absolutely love an underdog and BTS are the epitome of fighting from the ground up under fire. It would be very difficult, and frankly cruel, for their story to be purposely replicated by another group.

On the topic of Super M: First of all, why is no one talking about how Super M abbreviated is SM? Seems like that's the reason behind the name. Ok, so I am all for experimentation and the idea seems fun, but there does seem to be something off about the whole thing. I don't stan any SM groups, so I'm not an expert, but I think I am familiar enough to put these thoughts out there. To me, making a combined group gives me the impression that SM artists are interchangeable/replaceable, or at least the company considers the artists to be interchangeable. It also makes it seem as though the group divisions are somewhat arbitrary, and no thought about who works well together or who complements each other went into the process of debut-ing groups. To add on to that, Shinee, Exo, and NCT make very very different music. I would say especially NCT, who make some stuff that is really not like most kpop. So when SM decides to mix and match artists that make very different music, it makes it seem as though the artists have little ownership over the music they make. It seems like they only do a particular style of music because they happened to be thrown into a group doing that music. I guess we will just have to wait and see! Even with these concerns, I will definitely give Super M the benefit of the doubt and give their music a try.

Kiwi Tealc I dont know what the heck SM is doing honestly. like the sound and style of music that i associate with NCT, EXO and Taemin are completely different and theyre going to be pandering to an American audience so i wonder if their debut song is going to be; a style that none of the artists have done before, a song that characteristically sound like any kpop song, a weird combination of what the artists have done before, or something that sound like a any american pop song. Also hearing that they're gonna be debuting a new group when they cant even get their stuff together for the existing group they have make me worried. Like you said experimenting is fun and all that but this convoluted collaboration between the groups doesn't seem like it had been properly well prepared for.
@w.iroses5 жыл бұрын
Kiwi Tealc I also think they all have such difference stage presence and music styles that will outshine one another. Being in a group means you should not outshine each other individual but be one whole. I think having such powerful people together will definitely outshine one another.

I think the abbreviation of SuperM = SM is so obvious that people more focus on the Sp*rM jokes(?) I personally think they could be more creative about the name playing with the abbreviation tho, since there's Super Junior already, idk maybe SM team has some attachment to the word "Super" like they think it would make it cooler if they use it or something??? Or maybe because there IS SuJu as their predecessor, using the same first name will make ppl more familiar??? I'm not sure... Totally agree about your opinion about the music! about the replaceability of idols - honestly that's the first thing I thought about when I heard the news. Like if feels as if the label is just moving their pieces (idols) on their chessboard. What I've learned from the latest years in America's music industry is, America loves self-produced or self-written artists. Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande etc. and non-American like Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber, etc. Notice how the most famous musicians can write and produce their own songs? And I think that's why BTS could get very famous in the US. BTS can wrote the whole album by themselves, and they told people their stories with the song they've written. They dont rely on the company for songs, because they can make it on their own.

as an international fan, i can tell you that the current international fan reactions to SuperM are not good. I dont think they will have the success they're expecting. Whatever BTS produces will overshadow SuperM and swallow the group's debut. I dont think SM thought the idea through very well honestly. NCT & Blackpink tried but the level of hype around them isnt enough to sustain. I predict it will be the same for SuperM. Not because of anything they're lacking. But because the US isnt ready to open its doors completely to kpop. Even BTS aren't taken seriously in american interviews. As much as I want more kpop here. I don't think it can fully transition. @@Valentina-lu7kf Exactly. As an American I can say the musical market is hard to break into. BP won't last through the fiasco that is YGE honestly. I think TXT has a chance but that's only because of their connection with BTS and the quite large size of their fan base. But even they won't have the impact that BTS does in the US. Once BTS fades the market may take another group, but I'm not sure. Marketing towards the US has been the detriment of many kpop groups in the past from big 3 companies. I could be wrong, I want to be wrong because kpop is full of amazing music. But you're right, you can't market kpop to America the way you can market it to Japan or China. Psy only made it cause the video was funny. Not because people understood his music. That's the sad truth of most American listeners. If it's not funny or not in English, many people won't listen. If you think about the boy groupsand girl groups that made it into American pop the ones that would stand out the most to you are the spice Girls, the backstreet Boys, and NSYNC. Each of which has less than seven members.I'm not saying that seven is the specific number just because of the group I'm just saying that larger groups don't catch the eye of Americans because in our opinion that's not a band that's a show. There's so much going on and there's so many parts & people that many Americans don't want to take the time to focus on all the little parts & people and see so much that's going on. I personally enjoy a lot of groups but I can see what's happening with the actual Market in America. And if you think about it BTS may be very very huge but BTS still is not as big as the major names in our own pop industry. For example, many non-kpop American fans know BTS but everybody knows Ariana Grande even if they don't listen to her. I would love more kpop, but the US market won't ignore its own pop artists to make room for foreign ones to take over. We could consider it its own genre, but the language barrier and some people's small mindedness will always be an effect that prohibits growth. Sadly. But I hope the best for superM because I Stan the groups they're from and I know they're going to be amazing. But if they release right when BTS gets out of their Hiatus. I lowkey think that if the debut song doesn't vibe with the general US public their US debut wouldn't be as big as they think 😕 Edit: Kpop doesn't have a specific sound but SM groups do. If they change it simply to try to fit in the western market they risk the chance of not standing out (Regular by NCT 🤐). But if they stick to their original sound but change the format into something more digestible (i.e. the verse to pre-chorus to chorus transitions are the strangest things. That edm edge-lord sound that NCT has pobably needs to go. Emphasis on probably), they could make it. A good example is Superhuman by NCT. That song could be a huge success in the US. If they continue along their newfound path they have a chance.

I'm really hyped and worried for Super M. First of all the name sounds so cringe for a western audience, I can see ppl not taking it seriously just cause it has the word super in the name. I know all the fans of shinee and exo especially are upset but I really hope everyone still tries to support them. American labels can be pretty brutal as well and I don't want them all to get overworked and managed wrong and have cringe concepts but if on top of that all the fandom fans don't support them it'll be so demeaning. I really wish them the best I know they're gonna get a bunch of bts comments and comparisons and the society can be cruel and racist so I really hope fans have their back. I can't wait to see what they have to bring but I also know it might not be so catchy to begin with because sm likes going in odd directions with songs like with NCT and red relvet. If they have a tour im for sure going no matter what. And I hope to see interactions with bts because a lot of them are friends except NCT members I think. Exactly if you’re a fan of EXO & SHINee then support them. EXO are enlisting one by one. By the time they all finish with the military it’s unlikely that they would all ever regroup anyways. You might as well class them as disbanded now. All good things come to an end. Plus I’m sure the members are all excited and happy to move on to the next step in their careers. This is a good opportunity for Baekhyun & Kai to debut & promote in America. Something they didn’t really get a chance of doing in EXO.

I may not be a hard BTS Stan even I can see people's hipocracy here, I remember how certain fandoms called bts being westernised but kept quite when their faves started singing in English, and now a group is debuting directly debuting in USA with english songs, Now that's what u call seeking validation. When bts fans say BTS paved the way I believe it, now its like inkigayo lineup for American TV shows and interviews. And all those ppl who accused bts of western validation are keeping quiet. About super M. They might succeed as they have good vocalists but they're singing in English?? Don't mean to be racist but when kpop idols sing in English I barely understand them and it sounds weired plus the choreographys look weired. Then they have military coming up so like they have a year to be sucessful?? If that's so, then that's not going to happen. I can just see super in every TV shows, magazines, literally everywhere in America next year since they're backed up by a US label. Even if they gain popularity, their success won't be organic. Oh and all the groups from sm can say buy to their faves cb as sm is going to focus more on this new group. SM is desperate and I really think they're trying to overthrow BTS, to do that they'd need more than a year, as BTS is somewhat an established group there. We have to remember that Bts were in America L,A in 2014 studying hip hop and R&b ect from Coolio and some others they just didn't pop up in America nor forced their way in. It just flowed that way and Army were the reason they were on American shows. In 2017 is when they got recognized by the American public. So for this new group with not that many fans to come out and expect to even be the slightest of known like bts is than they better have a good song. Another thing is America doesn't care about visuals and manufactured songs nor a childish name like that. Not to mention they're nobodies in America their fancy titles of lead singer, best dancer ect from their other groups is thrown in the garbage they only ones who would be hyped about it is kpop fans and not the American public. I really hope they don't become the laughing stock and ruin it for all the other groups. Not to mention some of the members for SuperM are going to military next year🤐

One thing I know is that no matter how big your company is no matter “how powerfull” you said that group will be is no matter how big they’re fandom will get no one can really reach BTS’s level when it comes to success. Bighit never forced them to debut and explode in America. While this companies always does. SM should at least realize that success is something that cannot be forced. It is not limited to talent as well because if it's only for the talent, damn, there are quite a lot in the kpop industry. But why happened with BTS? It's because of the sincerity that they've shown towards their craft and their fans that transcends throughout the world. That's what they need to learn from the bulletproof boyscouts, mic drop baam. Ps. Not a harmful comment at all. I even stand corrected. Bless you! Ps. Now let me revise. I think being relatable is what makes BTS become who they are now. They are not afraid to show their flaws and accept the fact that they are not perfect. On the topic of Super M: Personally, I have a really strong feeling that the group won't do well in the American markets, and that's not from a place of doubt for their talents or anything like that, but instead of growing up listening to the music and seeing what American labels and shows usually want. I think it was a rushed decision on SM's part; I also think it's unfair to the individual members to be put in another group, handling an entire different country's market on top of everything else they have to do. SM has been on thin ice recently due to the rising tensions with their blatant mistreatment of Chinese members within NCT. This is either a really poor attempt at self-redemption or a desperate grab at foreign markets to see if they can pull themselves out of the mess they have already created. As much as I do agree with my above statements, I also want to mention that I will give Super M's music a try. It's worth giving a shot. If it doesn't work, then so be it, but I just wish that the artists weren't in the crossfire for all of this. There's also the added issue of being called "the Avengers of K-pop" because that implies there's a common enemy that they're meant to defeat. No one likes the sound of that. I have said this before to a few friends just because I legitimately believe in this comparison, but to me, BTS have become the modern Beatles (gasp! I know, it's such a shocking thing but really, is anyone that surprised? They have a legitimate movie coming out in theaters _globally_. That's not a small achievement.) and as much as it pains me to say, no other groups are going to come close. Sure, other groups will also rise to the top, but not in the same way nor the same capacity as BTS has. All of that being said, I hope they enjoy their break and that Super M isn't the dumpsterfire we all fear it to be. Also, howdy! I am a huge lurker of this community but I felt really strongly about this, so I decided to comment. Much love!

SM can provide the global market bop songs or combination of talented idols into one group or a group were majority of the members can speak fluent english but they can't duplicate or level the authenticity of BTS. Well, we'll see. 🤷♀️ I'm very fond of Mark so for sure he'll catch some attention.
@TrinhNguyen-sh4fj5 жыл бұрын
WENA PAJ You honestly do not know that as anything is possible in this world. I like BTS and are proud of their success but it does not mean that there cannot be another group that will not reach their level of success. I am sure there will be at least one if not a couple more groups that will reach their level or maybe even go beyond their level so who knows? Time will tell all.
@rowenapajares36985 жыл бұрын
@@TrinhNguyen-sh4fj I honestly agree that time will come, another group will get the spot light but not this time. Not until BTS is here. If superM will succeed to be huge in the states, that'll be great and I will not be mad about it. They are talented and charismatic. But the authenticity of BTS, how unique they are, how pure their relationship with their fans, that's what made them successful together with talent. That's my point.
@TrinhNguyen-sh4fj5 жыл бұрын
WENA PAJ Once again not doubting BTS, but other groups have a very strong relationship with their fans too so it is not just them. Other groups have the talent and all of the traits that you mentioned as well. However, I think how they are promoted and marketed is very important too. You can be the most talented and sweetest group to your fans but if your management and company does not allow you to shine then it is all in the dark and success will only be a dream. But let’s see as time will tell and anything is possible in this world. Plus, maybe Cpop and groups from other countries will shine as well so it is not just Korean groups. The possibilities are endless.
@whocares58635 жыл бұрын
@@TrinhNguyen-sh4fj well, I think what makes bts unique is the fact that they write and produce their own music, they speak about problems we as society and as individuals go through, with their music but also with their alternative universe. their story and the theories behind it, is very interesting and well made. they touch different topics, many of them are seen as inappropriate to talk about. (the education system, the struggles of students, beauty standards, self love, mental illness, family matters, suicide, the loss of a loved one, youth, low self esteem, individualism) They are also very open to their fans. Many kpop artists won't even dare to speak about these issues, because the korean society will end their careers. They are sincere and genuine. For example, yoongi exposed to the world his mental health issues, his dark thoughts through his mixtape. This made people view him as a normal person with struggles and not a flawless idol with no problems whatsoever. Another strong point is their lyrics. They are so well written and have references of the greek mythology, different books and types of art, paintings, phylosophy etc. That's what fans like the most. Their touching lyrics and how genuine and honest they are. Many non kpop fans view kpop as something fake and plastic. Perfect idols with no say in their work. Bts are true artists and that's what made them so popular in the first place iml

@TrinhNguyen-sh4fj5 жыл бұрын
Cheryl Dailey Good points and honestly BTS gets the question of whether they will make a whole album in English all the time. I think that is kind of a dumb question as RM is the only one who can speak English in the whole group. Plus they are a foreign group so why expect an entire English album from them. It depends on how many members in the group can speak English well and I think some of them do from what I know. However, I think maybe they would only have 1-2 songs entirely in English at most as they are Korean artists so of course most of their songs will still be in Korean. However, in order to appeal to the American market more, I am sure they will have at least a number of songs in English. BTS has not really done that so maybe they will do it in order to impress the American audience and fans more, who knows?

Shawols and Exols, I understand why you would be upset, but you have to think of it this way. Some EXO and Shinee members are in the military. I know it sucks how SM didn't give EXO a world tour before 2 of them went to the military.. I would side with NCTzens though, because NCT aren't missing any members. Double working two of the members will be too much for them, considering they are a whole group right now.. SM really is trying to find another alternative to make money, but putting two NCT members while they're a whole group..I Don't think it was a smart move..NCT is doing good on their own atm..

“Avengers of kpop” ouch cringeee. I think that there’s a reason bts became huge in the west and I feel like it’s because they themselves connect a lot with their fans and to me at least they kinda feel different from your conventional kpop group that’s run by a big company like SM, they seem less “manufactured” to put it in some way. Also bts becoming mainstream in the US that’s great, but I feel like it might be kinda hard for further kpop groups to do the same mostly because of how competitive the US market is. It feels saturated, we now have some kpop that’s popular, but also Latin music is kicking in hard in the US and obviously your typical English songs. It feels like a lot for a group that was just formed, even if it’s formed from SM’s best idols, it’s still a new group you don’t know how they will work together, so I don’t see how they can just make their way in somehow, maybe they can be popular among kpop fans in the US but among the general public? Idk seems too ambitious.

I feel like BTS' success stems from their story, they represent the Hero archetype. We're so attracted to them because the hero archetype in our own psyche recognizes their challenges and their battles and lastly, their victory. It's so much more than the music or the choreography at this point. I'm honestly a little scared to anticipate how SM's plans will go. At first, their integration of a system that allows their artists to be interchangeable seemed so exciting and innovative, but there's a distant foreignness about the groups now. NCT was fine, the EXO subunits were fine. But a group that breaks the boundaries of the existing groups? I understand there may be intentions to pool the fans into one super group. However, this expands the flow of the artists' relationships and chemistry to much broader terms. The innovation seems to have come at the cost of intimacy, and I'm really uncertain about the outcome.

What's with calling SPERM...I mean, Super M “Avengers of kpop”? Kpop was never wronged so what is there to "avenge"? SM is desperately trying to follow Big Hit's wave. NCT did okay here, but did not make the big splash that SM was hoping for and that is why they are trying again w/ Super M. They were seeking BTS level numbers because they foolishly thought Americans just wanted Kpop and any Kpop will do. I agree w/ David, this time, that this will likely NOT work. Super M is a horrible name and just comes off as a cheap knock off of Super Junior despite the members being actual seasoned and talented young men in their own respective groups. It's immediately starting the group off on the wrong foot. Just being able to speak English is not what was needed for the group. SM is showing, with pride, their extreme ignorance as to what it was that actually made fans become ARMYs that are so heavily dedicated to BigHit AND BTS. ARMYs got to be with them through their struggles. We got to support them and witness them growing and caring about their craft and content they were sharing with the world. We got to watch them go through their mentoring w/ Warren G and see that even to this very day they are utilizing the methods, tips, and insights he gave them in American Hustle; even in their solo projects like RM's MONO and August D's The Last or Jimin's LIE, etc. We are moved by their sincerity and they don't try to sugarcoat their situations like ALL other Kpop groups have been told/trained to do. They cry, they get angry, they need to be alone sometimes, and have learned to embrace their differences and support each other's differences and always encourage ARMY and the world to do the same; LOVE YOURSELF. They are not afraid to make music addressing societal issues like BAEPSAE or mental health with the entire LOVE YOURSELF saga. They are genuine. SM is NOT. Even if we're fans of the respected OG groups the members of Super M come from we are not puppets nor are we blind. We see what SM's goal is here and what they THINK they can manipulate markets into. It will not work because we are not stupid. They will not get the BTS level views, radio play, TV show invites that they are imagining. We are not "Kpop hungry" here in America. We're starving for genuine artistry and personable, trust worthy role models. THAT's why BTS has been on fire since American Hustle in 2013 and grew so popular so very fast. #Day1ARMY #OT7

BTS intro to the western audiences was more like a mutual thing on both sides, and started with the internet. This whatever SuoerM has a deliberate purposeful feel to it. BTS original target wasn't even the western markets, hence the lyrics are like 90% in korean instead of being in English. Success may not always be replicated if the chemistry isn't genuine and mutual, esp from western audience and westernised societies like Singapore who prefer more individual style that one can relate to instead of manufactured appeal.

As an American I am still shocked that BTS was able to become as popular as they are in U.S. The times and culture are definitely shifting but it still surprises me that they’ve done as well as they have here. This is no diss to BTS’s talent - It’s just still hard to believe that Americans are open to non-English music and people who look different than your standard American act. I always had a feeling that Blackpink would be successful in the U.S. due to their western look and style of music. I almost cried when I walked into a Kohl’s store last week and heard Blackpink playing. In the case of SuperM ... first of all who on earth thought it would be a good name? I’m shocked that Capital records didn’t clock them for having a name that is practically Sperm ... secondly I don’t have high expectations for their success in the U.S. Nobody knows who Exo, NCT, or Shinee are. Unless they plan on singing in all English I don’t think they will be successful but of course wish them all the best.

I've already said this on Twitter but SuperM comes across as a little desperate to me, I'm not an SM stan but I look to SM as the company so big they can try anything and set the trends but given that NCT never became as big as they wanted they're doing this as some cheap attempt at competing with BTS (I also feel like it kind aims to capitalize on Produce101 with the whole 'Avenger team' idea). It's purely a dick measuring contest or at least an attempt at one to prove they can still compete with BTS but it feels like a cop out because of course if 3 established fandoms come together there'll be a degree of success but I feel like the set up is going to lead to it not working out as well as they think and if it 'flops' it'll look really bad. There's no benefit to anyone but the NCT127 boys and even then they're overworked as all hell, the akgaes involved will have a fit, WayV will probably be put on hiatus while the projects ongoing, Baekhyun Taemin and Kai have to spend their year or so before enlistment promoting NCT and the entire idea of conquering America is stupid and they should've aimed to promote NCT in Korea instead.
